Britannia Metalwork worked with building contractors Gilbert-Ash and Architects Hawkins/Brown in designing, fabricating, and fitting bespoke decorative floor grilles to replace the damaged originals in the Orangery at the City of London Freeman’s School.It was a project that we were thrilled to be commissioned for and work that we are extremely proud of - the grilles were manufactured, delivered and fitted within the project timeframe, despite pressures of the ongoing global pandemic of 2021.The 168-year-old City of London Freemen's School is set in 57 acres of Ashtead Park in the heart of Surrey. The masterplan scheme included the renovation works to the Grade II listed Main House (including an energy centre), and some new buildings including junior school, dining hall and assembly hall as well as landscaping and car park works. The total cost of the project was £15 and won a place as a Finalist in the 2022 Conservation & Regeneration Constructing Excellence SECBE Awards.Britannia was commissioned to design and make a total of 33 bespoke cast iron grilles, with bare metal finish, to be placed within the marbled floor of the historic and beautiful Orangery. The focus of the work was to complement the heritage of the iconic building while ensuring good ventilation to allow the building to become a flexible and useful large space for school events.Frequently referred to as Cathedral, Ecclesiastical or Victorian decorative floor grilles and as seen here, often placed over channels holding heating pipes, they provide a practical and decorative heating vent. Originally designed for churches they are increasingly popular in private houses, greenhouses, and commercial building developments. This client had an untreated deck that had degraded due to UV exposure and needed it restored and finished. this was achieved by using Net-trol Wood Cleaner & Colour Restorer followed by D1 Pro Saturating Oil.Cleaning and preparing an IPE Deck for FinishingBefore using Net-Trol you need to ensure that your surface is cleared of debris – a good sweep should suffice.The surface then needs to be made wet and Net-Trol should then be scrubbed into the surface. We recommend using a stiff brush, then leave it to stand for approximately 20 minutes.Then it should be rinsed whilst scrubbing ,again with a stiff brush. Try to use the highest pressure water source you can (a pressure washer is ideal but a hose will suffice).Your surface then needs to be left for at least 48 hours to dry completely before applying your finish.Why use Owatrol’s D1 Pro?In this case, the client has chosen to finish their IPE deck with Owatrol’s D1 Pro, a product from our Professional Range which is a saturating wood oil for hardwoods giving a long-lasting natural finish and advanced UV protection.This product is well-suited for use in heavy-traffic areas such as decking and areas exposed to harsh weather. This is because it has a long-lasting finish that will protect in the years to come with minimal maintenance.It’s also perfect for dense, oily or greasy woods which are difficult to impregnate with saturating products. D1 Pro delivers excellent wood penetration and can protect even these more difficult woods from within.As such it was perfect for this project as it is made from IPE Decking which is an extremely hard wood decking (approximately 3 times harder than oak!).Many high street products would not have been able to provide adequate saturation in a wood as hard as this and therefore would not provide the long-lasting protection offered by D1 Pro.Finishing a deck with D1 ProOwatrol’s D1 Pro is a saturating wood oil protection. This means that its place is inside the wood not on top of it.To apply a saturating oil you need to apply ‘wet on wet’ coats. This means that the surface cannot be allowed to dry in between coats. If this was to happen then the D1 Pro that had been absorbed so far would start working and prevent any further moisture from penetrating the wood!This sounds a little scary but it really isn’t.The key is to work on small sections at a time (an area which can be completed in around 15 minutes). You need to apply the first coat and allow it to be absorbed for around 15-20 minutes but do not allow it to become surface dry.You then continue to apply coats until no more oil can be absorbed and the wood is saturated. At this point be sure to brush away any excess D1 Pro sitting on the surface to prevent shiny patches.Be sure to work along the length of your decking boards and always work an entire board at once. Never stop mid-board to prevent uneven coverage.Once this is completed you will have a deck protected for the long-haul with minimal maintenance required.Regular washing with Net-Trol is optional but will help to maintain the look of your deck. The look of the deck will gradually lighten over time; when it returns to a grey colour it is time for a maintenance coat. You apply it in exactly the same way but usually only 1-2 coats is necessary.You can also apply a maintenance coat in just a small localised area if that’s all that is necessary. No sanding or stripping required!The finished resultsAs you can see the results are stunning! The client can be safe in the knowledge that their deck is protected for years to come from damage caused by UV rays and moisture.On top of this, they know that they will need to do minimal maintenance. If the deck begins to look worn in high traffic areas, they’re able to carry out touch-ups easily.

Asta House, part of the 80 Charlotte Street development, comprises 22 apartments which have been designed with rich detail and luxurious materials throughout. The wide-windowed brick and slate building was decorated with KEIM Royalan to give a stylish, sleek finish.

Accoya wood has been used to create cladding, windows, doors, decking and guttering in family home in Sweden. Over 20 m3 of Accoya was ordered for the project and was used to create cladding, windows, external doors, decking and even the guttering. The joinery firm and construction company were very impressed with the performance of Accoya on this project. The build time was faster than expected with other wood species, it was easy to use and work with and it allowed to use wider planks of Accoya for the cladding.

A leading European mail-order company for work wear and protective equipment, wanted to use a building material that was ultra durable and therefore reflected and complemented their brand image. Accoya® wood, used as screening for the building, illustrates to perfection the hard-wearing and practical elements of this work wear brand. Roggemann, Accoya’s German and Polish distributor, supplied 500 m2 of Accoya® for the project. The Accoya wood was additionally coated with a transparent stain to highlight its natural beauty.

ABODO Laminated Timber Cladding coated with ABODO Ebony Oil was chosen on this project. Being Thermally modified the Abodo product was supplied in much wider 180mm boards – the thermal modification process not only offers great stability, but also a great species to coat. The FSC Certified ABODO Cladding range offers a renewable alternative to some of the more traditional Larch or Cedar cladding that the construction market are used to.

They perfectly integrate into the interior, creating a decorative element with an additional acoustic function. So when Davison Fencing approached CLD Fencing Systems back in 2015, regarding the need for a bespoke fencing solution, we worked tirelessly to produce a decorative privacy fencing system that would meet the specific needs of the hospital.The BriefThe architects and the team at the Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre had a number of requirements for their decorative privacy fencing. They wanted to ensure their fencing system complemented the aesthetics of their gardens.The system needed to provide privacy screens for around the treatment areas.It must be a visually pleasing fence line which was a work of art for all to enjoy.

On the Grand Union Canal in Hemel Hempstead, the Nash Mills Wharf housing development features a range of stylish new build 1-4 bedroom houses and luxury apartments offering high quality waterside living in this Hertfordshire town.With a waterproofing system required to protect the concrete podium above the ground floor car park, a selection of hot and cold applied products were provided by Proteus Waterproofing that met the requirements of the client Linden Homes. The licensed roofing contractor worked with Proteus Waterproofing on a dual system specification which included the fast and economical Proteus Hot-Melt waterproofing system, and for the intricate detailing around upstands and to avoid hot works around the plastic soil and vent pipes, the Cold Melt® waterproofing system was the ideal solution.Fast, hassle-free applicationWith the podium deck covering 3000m2, the Proteus Hot Melt® system was the optimum waterproofing solution for a robust, cost effective, seamless and fast application. This solution worked exceptionally well for the Licensed Contractor and is compatible with the fast applied Cold Melt® solution which was used for high detail items including plastic soil and vent pipes and upstands. There was also the added challenge of wet brickwork and an exacting building program to keep to. To overcome this problem, Proteus isolated the wet substrate with Pro-DPM Primer (Damp Proof Primer) which can be applied to green concrete 3 days old and then followed immediately by the Proteus waterproofing system. This enabled the Cold Melt® to be installed on to the vertical elevations will no loss of time.Quality controlProteus Waterproofing worked in close partnership with its Licensed Contractor to successfully deliver the project to a very high standard within the required timeframe.Long term performanceIncorporating recycled rubber-crumb and other organically grown products, Cold Melt® creates an elastomeric, seamless, cold applied membrane and can outlast the lifetime of the substrate on which it is installed.

Our ‘Simplicity’ Corrugated Panelling System has been used in the refurbishment of 40 Spring Gardens, Manchester. Specified by Space Invader Design and installed by JSJ UK, these decorative (and secretly fixed) panelling profiles continue the linear design of the interior break out spaces and booths. 

This new adventure village at a large Haven holiday park in Gwynedd, Wales required a safe decorative surface for visitors. The light buff coloured asphalt complemented both the design of the adventure village and the coastal setting far more than conventional black asphalts or block pavers.

Junckers solid hardwood flooring has been installed at The New Library, Magdalene College, Cambridge, an award- winning new building by Niall McLaughlin Architects. An interior of cross-laminated timber and hardwood create a welcoming and modern study environment with interconnecting rooms and spaces. The New Library at one of University of Cambridge’s oldest colleges provides a wide variety of resources, both print and digital, including books, journals, and reference works. There are more than 90 study spaces across three floors with a mix of individual desks, comfortable seating, and window seats. The long-length Junckers’ 20.5mm Oak Boulevard Harmony plank flooring provides a warm and elegant backdrop, complementing the use of timber throughout the building. A series of brick columns echo the gabled buildings typical of the College’s architecture and carefully considered windows and roof lights provide plenty of natural light making the library a comfortable and inspiring place to study and work. A solid hardwood floor from Junckers has a crevice-free surface which cannot harbour dust or mites. It is easy to keep clean and contributes to a healthy indoor climate, one of the RIBA’s targets in its 2030 Climate Challenge for architects. Junckers floors carry the Danish Indoor Climate label, recognised by BREEAM, and have undergone extensive degassing and odour testing to ensure no harmful gasses are released into the room. Installing timber in an interior helps minimise static from electrical appliances and helps maintain an even temperature, an important consideration for a well-used library. The New Library by Niall McLaughlin has won several awards including the Wood Awards Gold Award 2021, the Civic Trust Award 2022, and a RIBA East Regional Award 2022. The Times newspaper named The New Library one of the coolest new buildings of the year (2021). 

Working with architects, Broe & Co LLP, Style was specified to install a new folding wall system to the ground floor of the Bloomsbury Street Day Nursery in Brighton, creating a flexible environment where children are encouraged to learn, play and explore at their own pace.Allowing nursery staff to separate the room into two, Style recommended a Stylefold acoustic glass folding wall with a 44dB Rw rating, ensuring that activities either side of the wall can take place undisturbed. By choosing a glazed folding wall, staff can maintain a watchful eye on the children and the area continues to enjoy an airy and open feel, even when the wall is in place.This manually operated folding wall is light and simple to open and close, encouraging staff to change the room configuration to suit daily activities. The pass door means the wall can remain in place for longer periods if desired without hindering access between rooms.“For schools, day centres, and community halls the Stylefold folding wall is a really effective solution,” said Michael Porter, Style’s group sales director.“It can be opened and closed in seconds, the acoustics are superb – which means you can enjoy privacy either side, and this modestly priced folding wall solution is ideal for when budgets are tight.“A folding wall can also help cut energy costs by avoiding having to heat and light a large open plan area when the entire space is not actually required – something that is at the top of most people’s priorities at the moment.”As well as the glazed option, the Stylefold folding wall is also available in a variety of finishes, including painted, polished wood veneer or a wide range of standard or high-pressure laminates.It can also be installed with writeable white board panels, which is ideal in a teaching environment.

Accoya® wood has been selected to provide decking for one of just twenty six gardens on display at Europe’s most renowned garden events the Chaumont-sur-Loire International Garden Show. The garden includes stone monoliths which represent the seven deadly sins and seven heavenly virtues connected by wooden decked paths, crafted from Accoya wood. There are also ‘see-saw’ structures of Accoya which connect different sides of the garden and which symbolise the need for balance in life.

Moralt Laminesse FireSmoke door blanks were supplied through James Latham in Thurrock to timber engineering specialists David Smith in St. Ives, Cambridgeshire for a new 474 door school project in Carshalton. Moralt‘s Laminesse laminated timber core door blanks were chosen for the project on account of their lighter weight yet solid timber construction. This product suits the higher-traffic school environment extremely well.

We worked with architects IMA to create an innovative new modular cycle centre for a central London office. The cycle centre includes our Forza solid grade laminate lockers complete with digital code access locks. We also installed our highly engineered Marcato toilet and shower cubicles, fitted with stainless steel locks and coat hooks, and finished the new space with bespoke Corian trough vanities.

Armourcoat Sculptural creates seamless wall surfaces with impactful designs and cast relief. Each design is created from cast GRG (Glass-fibre Reinforced Gypsum) panels, CAD generated to enable a continuous pattern or unique decorative effect.Specified by Pernille Stafford of Resonate Interiors

The Service Department at Helmsman have been hard at work at Felixstowe Leisure Centre. The changing rooms at Felixstowe Leisure Centre were kitted out with Helmsman’s lockers many years ago, and whilst the existing lockers and cubicles had lasted a long time, they were tired and generally needed refreshing.The locker bodies were still great quality, so we manufactured and installed new doors, with new locks and numbering, and supplied wrist straps for the keys. The lockers were a fairly old design, that we don’t often have requested anymore, however as we provide the full package at Helmsman, we can manufacture most bespoke options, including replacements for lockers from other manufacturers. See our Riverside Leisure Centre Case Study for example.Our team manufactured brand new laminate locker doors with matching cubicle doors and facias for this service project. We used BioCarbon’s Carbon Neutral laminate in colour “Graphite” and Abet Laminate in colour “Yellow Pop” to refresh the changing rooms with a splash of colour, completely transforming the area from the white and blue theme that existed before. The locker doors are complete with brand new numbering and Lowe and Fletcher cam locks with wrist straps for the keys. These wrist straps are a great addition for lockers in leisure centres, providing the flexibility for users to wear their key whilst they use the facilities.It was interesting for the team to work with an older design of Helmsman locker, and with the refresh of the lockers and cubicles, the changing rooms at Felixstowe Leisure Centre look brand new again. High quality wooden gates can make a real statement at the entrance to your home, that is as long as they are protected with a high quality finish and looking great! These Iroko gates are making the right kind of statement with some top quality TLC and a beautiful finish provided by D1 Pro and Owatrol Deco.The Iroko gates in this case study had previously been coated with Danish Oil. It was now not making the right kind of statement and definitely needed to be stripped before a new finish could be applied. Roger at R & A Pressure Washing Services Ltd. set to work stripping the gates using Prepdeck.If your gates are remaining in-situ throughout the project then you’ll need to use Aquanett (for wood oils) or Dilunett (for paints and other finishes) as they are gel formulations which won’t run. In this case, the gates were removed so they could be laid flat for the application of Prepdeck.To use Prepdeck simply apply it to the surface with a brush and leave it to work for an appropriate length of time. When the coatings are lifting scrub the surface and rinse with water to remove the residue. You should then immediately neutralise the surface of the wood with Net-Trol. Roger then left it to dry and then lightly sanded the surface with a 60 grit orbital sander for a super smooth finish – this step is not essential though.Using D1 Pro to protect Iroko GatesWhen Roger had completed the preparation of the gates it was time to apply the D1 Pro. D1 Pro’s place is inside the wood, where it saturates it, feeding the wood with oil to replace those lost. It drives out moisture and air, filling the woods pores with oil, and enriches and stabilises it to provide long lasting protection with high UV resistance. D1 Pro enhances the natural beauty of the wood whilst being easy to maintain, requiring no sanding or stripping.D1 Pro is applied ‘wet-on’wet’ which means that you apply coats one after the other without allowing the oil to dry in between and continue until the wood is saturated and will take no more oil. To apply D1 Pro you start by applying a first generous coat. Work in areas that can be coated in 15 minutes. Allow time for it to be absorbed into the surface (15-30 minutes). Apply a second application as soon as the first has been absorbed. Allow to dry.Continue in this way until the wood will not accept any more oil, i.e. it is saturated. Then wipe off any excess to avoid shiny spots, you should be left with a rich matt finish. Work like this in sections to prevent the surface from becoming touch dry in between coats. Roger needed 3 coats of D1 Pro for his iroko gates.Using Owatrol Deco to protect metal work on wooden gatesRoger then used Owatrol Deco, our rust-inhibiting multi-surface primer and finish. This enabled him to have a high gloss black finish which would also provide long-term protection against corrosion and the effects of the weather. The Owatrol Deco is applied in 2 coats, allowing the first coat 24 hours to dry before applying the second.We think you’ll agree, it’s a pretty big transformation and these gates are now making the right kind of statement!

Canal were approached to manufacture and install an exclusive feature staircase for a private residence in Fulham. The staircase structure was installed from the basement to the ground floor and then leading upto the first floor and master bedroom. The staircase was manufactured in mild steel, featured oak box treads with a laminated glass balustrade and stainless steel handrail. The team added a high build deep black finish to each of the treads to blend with the contemporary and elegant staircase design.

SkyGard proved the obvious choice for this low cost canopy for one of the Nation’s biggest clients. Special bracketry was required in accordance with the architects design and strategically spaced access hatches, provide access for cleaning the box gutter. SkyGard Patent Glazing combined with laminated glass provides one of the most economical glass canopy solutions with an expected 30-35 years design life and virtually non-existent design life costs as maintenance is minimal.

This previously draughty corridor was in sore need to refurbishment at this hotel and spa just outside Manchester. Our ThermGard-R rafter glazing bars were ideal for sitting on top of the existing steel rafters and provided a robust glazing method to retain the large double glazed units. Softcoat low-e laminated and toughened glass insulating glass units provide excellent heat retention and being North facing, there was no need for the addition of solar control.

Hurricane Court is a conversion of offices into 84 one and two bedroom contemporary apartments and studios. The name is derived from the Hawker Hurricane aircraft manufactured here in the 1940’s. Within five miles of Heathrow, this development is the first ever courtyard scheme and residential private balcony terraces in Langley. By developing a gated residential space, this project becomes a microcosm, a community within the already idyllic community of Langley.Cellecta’s RUBBERfon Cradles were specified by p-ad due to them being Robust Detail FFT2 compliant and allowing easy integration of an underfloor heating system. RUBBERfon Cradles utilise incremental high impact plastic packers and elevation blocks to level an uneven structural floor quickly and easily. Softwood battens are then used to support the floor decking board.Nacropolis Group was supplied 2,500m² of Cellecta products to develop these apartments in the village of Langley in Berkshire.

The village of Papekop is located in the west of the province of Utrecht, surrounded on three sides by the province of South Holland.Here, in collaboration with Arco Architecten Bna, a stylish barn house is fitted with two louver systems. By Sunshield.The entire facade on the southwest is made of glass, and has a surface area of 34 m2. The ground floor is equipped with a rectangular slat system. On the second floor, the louver system begins as a rectangle, but ends at the top of the ridge triangular.Each system is operated by a motor with remote control, so independently of each other.The residents have opted for the 96-E louver. A blade with a modern, sleek design and a width of 96 mm. When the slats are fully open, the view between the louvers is 90 mm. The residents can then fully enjoy the rural panorama from their residence.The aluminum components are powder coated in RAL 9004, signal black. The plastic parts are black.

First fully inspired Cradle to Cradle development in the Netherlands uses Accoya Cladding. The Bosch Siemens HOME (B/S/H) office, called The Inspiration House, is the first building designed for Park 20|20 (the first Cradle to Cradle-inspired full-service development in the Netherlands). The Inspiration House 20|20 was designed by architect William McDonough with Michael Braungart, the founder of the cradle-to-cradle movement. Accoya wood was chosen for the external cladding and windows because it is the only wood product that has achieved the prestigious Cradle to Cradle Gold Certification.

Accoya was selected for the black coated weatherboards on the front of the house, due to its durability & stability benefits. Because of Accoya’s modification technique it's the ideal wood for cladding. Generally, problems occur with darker coatings on cladding, due to shrink & swell being exasperated by the solar gain. But, Accoya wood’s superior dimensional stability negates this problem & there's very little maintenance. The cladding needed to be aesthetically pleasing as well as highly durable in order to withstand the extreme climates in NZ. Accoya was also chosen due to its rot resistant & insect deterring benefits.

The restaurant at Edinburgh's Botanic Gardens features a Douglas Fir floor finished with Bona Traffic HD. The area was sanded back to bare wood using Bona’s ‘dust free’ system so no need to ‘tent’ the adjacent mezzanine area. Traffic HD was specified to provide the required level of durability in such a busy area. It's a very low VOC formulation which protects wood floors in highly trafficked areas. Its fast development time means busy commercial floors can be put back into full use just 24 hours after application.
