This project, built by Ashe Construction, has been designed to comply with the Passivhaus standard. The main structure is Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) and has been protected from the elements with Pro Clima Solitex Adhero, a weatherproof self-adhesive breather membrane and rain jacket for the building. 

Resopal® High Pressure (HPL) Digital Print Laminate was used to create a stunning impact in a six storey development in Leeds. The panelling to lift surrounds in the office tower atrium was designed by Oblong Furniture and manufactured and installed by Absolute Interiors in Malachite LED 7273-60

Our durable rain-screen system wood panels embrace the refinement and warmth typically of wood into the structure in juxtaposition with other materials such as concrete and metal resembling Japanese architecture, with its pure lines, rhythm, dynamism, and sobriety.To accentuate the rhythm and promote harmony between concrete and wood, we have opted for the vertical placement of the slats that evokes the patterns of the wood framework. Achieving such effect is possible given the aesthetics enhanced by the small piece that attains a harmonious relationship between wood and concrete. With an innovative setup in the architectural sphere composed of a hidden system with no visible screws or rivets, the slatted cladding can be placed vertically even in large buildings, and in an easy way that provides a sense of strength and uniformity to the whole. The PARKLEX PRODEMA panels new setup system allows achieving distinctive finishes with the warmth of the wood, longevity, durability, and limited to no maintenance requirements.

One of the most modern hospitals in Germany has been in operation since the beginning of 2024: the new Helios HSK in Wiesbaden. Around 120,000 outpatients and 45,000 inpatients are treated here every year in 28 specialist clinics and institutes, with more than 2,400 employees working for the hospital.With an investment sum of 268 million euros, a new building complex with a longitudinal axis of 200 m and a depth of 100 m was erected directly next to the existing Helios Dr. Horst Schmidt Clinics, which can accommodate all the functions of a maximum care provider in high-performance medicine. The architecture and comb structure of the new building are aligned with the treatment processes and follow the principle of short distances: the departments are arranged in such a way that synergies are created and interdisciplinary cooperation is facilitated. The foyer, cafeteria, corridors and staircases of the building were designed to be functional and aesthetically pleasing at the same time using selected series of Villeroy & Boch tiles.The vilbostone ABERDEEN porcelain stoneware series create a purist atmosphere with a subtle natural touch in the open foyer, which is flooded with light thanks to large glass surfaces and furnished with light-colored wood, in the corridors and stairwells. Inspired by the silver-grey granite from the former quarries around the harbor town of the same name in north-east Scotland, the design of the tiles adapts the typical inclusions and gloss effects of the grey Aberdeen stones in high-quality ceramics. In the floor design, the 30 x 60 cm and 15 x 60 cm formats in the expressive, matt slate grey color are combined in a bond, creating an interesting, lively look in the surfaces. The floor covering is extremely robust and easy to clean and offers a high level of slip resistance with slip resistance R10/A. The stairwells are designed with special 30 x 120 cm stair tiles, the edges of which have contrasting colored edges and milled grooves for better visibility. In addition, in particularly sensitive areas such as the kitchen, tiles with slip resistance R12-V4 were laid, which, thanks to their special surface structure, enable safe standing and walking even with large amounts of liquids or grease. The ABERDEEN wall tile in light white pearl in 30 x 60 cm format was also laid in various sanitary areas. A lustre print finish creates interesting matt-gloss effects on the glazed stoneware tiles, which subtly imitate the character of granite and can be perceived to varying degrees depending on the incidence of light and point of view.In the cafeteria, whose interior design with the theme of “water” is reminiscent of Wiesbaden’s tradition as a spa town, floor areas with tiles from the historically inspired design concept CENTURY UNLIMITED catch the eye. The high-quality vilbostone porcelain stoneware combines a fine cotto cement look with decorations inspired by the Mettlach tiles from the 19th century. Attractive tile carpets have been created with decorative tiles in a successful contrast to the ABERDEEN surface in a consistent color: As a border, the cotto-colored Diamonds decor with classic diamonds creates a three-dimensional trompe l’œil effect. The main surface of the “carpet” is composed of the Circles decor, which uses ornaments in various coordinated shades of grey and beige as well as the expressive colors cotto and indigo to place the traditional patterns in a highly aesthetic, contemporary context.

ASF worked with artist Bernadette Hughes to develop these spectacular products. Highly decorative laser profiled panels were used to make seats, litter bins and signage. The detailed profiles themselves were manufactured in stainless steel plate and then powder coated, to retain the intricate laser cut details that would be lost is the sheets were galvanised after cutting. The outer shapes were then profiled from heavy duty mild steel sheet that was galvanised, and the two sheets mounted cheek by cheek with invisible fixings. The result isa highly visible design that is decorative, strong and has zero finger traps.

Products from Johnstone’s Trade’s portfolio have created a lasting impression on patients at a state-of-the-art, 24-bed dementia unit in Sunderland. Helping a Gateshead-based decorating contractor win a prestigious Johnstone’s Painter of the Year Award. Thousands of litres of Johnstone’s Covaplus Vinyl Matt, Premium Contract Matt and Acrylic Eggshell were used throughout the unit by the decorators during a tight four-month timescale. The paint was used on corridors, offices, washrooms, stairwells, lounges, dining areas and doors throughout the unit, all of which now boast bold, fresh looks.

Riversfield is a large detached Grade B listed town house. This property had severe contamination of moss and algae. We recommended that the climbing plants and wall shrubs to be moved away from the surfaces prior to the decoration of KEIM. We then advised that any existing fungal growth must be thoroughly removed using wire brushes to remove all growths and then all areas were to be treated with KEIM Algicid. Onto the cement based, roughcast surfaces, a three coat KEIM Royalan system was used to provide a colourfast, longlife, breathable, protective and decorative mineral matt finish.

Recently opened, the lavishly decorated Ivy Asia is a concept restaurant/bar set in the heart of London. Offering flexible dining, Style installed a semi-automatic Dorma Hüppe Variflex moveable wall, allowing an exclusive room for up to 35 guests to be quickly created. With the Variflex system delivering 38dB Rw acoustic integrity, the private guests can enjoy an intimate experience in the sectioned off room, while the rest of the bar and restaurant operates as normal. The panel facings have a simple priming sheet finish, allowing the restaurant to decorate them with their own flamboyantly Asian-themed graphics,

Orac Decor has created an immersive, experiential showroom which includes a nude coloured curved ceiling near the entrance featuring Rockfon Mono Acoustic.

A residential home in Enfield, London, was extended out the back of the property and charred Accoya wood was the chosen material for the cladding. Innovative architects, Studio Hatcham, specified charred Accoya wood to make the extension distinguishable yet sensitive, enhancing the existing grey brickwork, rather than overshadowing it. The Accoya was treated using a charring technique, taking the wood from its originally light colour to a darker, burnt effect. The cladding was charred in three varying shades, creating depth to the extension; light brush “Shizen”, Graphite “Seizo” and Anthracite “Gen no”. For the posts, a deep black effect was chosen to define and accentuate, in particular, the large glass opening of the extension into the back garden. Despite charring the wood, Accoya remains durable and stable with a 50-year warranty against rot. This alongside its great sustainability credentials, made it the perfect choice for this extension.

This property in a picturesque town in Cornwall, was in need of some TLC. The exterior walls are exposed to the seaside climes, making it perfect as the first project in the UK to use KEIM Twinstar, 2in1 masonry exterior paint.Prior to re-decoration, it was recommended that the painted stone gable walls were stripped back to enable the property to breathe, which reduces the paint from blistering and flaking due to moisture being trapped within the substate. Aberdeen Railway Station is the UK’s busiest station north of Edinburgh and Glasgow and is listed is listed as ‘Category A’ by Historic Environment Scotland. The station building has a glazed canopy roof, which needed a full upgrade. Paddington Square is a brand new working, shopping and dining quarter opening in 2023. The impressive transparent, glass building, also known as Paddington Cube, provides up to 50,000sqm of floor space with offices, retail units, a café, a bar and restaurants. The area underneath the building features the Bakerloo Line Underground Entrance and ticket hall.Following their work on a marketing suite at Paddington Square, Lucas Ltd were invited back to provide a full back of house painting and fit-out service across the basement, ground and first floor levels. Helmsman were delighted to assist them with the lockers in the project.The client requested laminate Z Lockers for two sets of changing rooms at Paddington Square. Between the male and female changing rooms we supplied and installed 268 Z Lockers, for 536 people. Z Lockers are a fantastic space optimising locker design, with a small footprint and maximised internal space. As one of the UK’s leading locker manufacturers, we specialise in bespoke locker design. The locker sizes requested were not our standard sizes, so a bespoke Z Locker design was created for the project at 1525 x 325 x 500mm.As the Z Lockers were for a changing room environment, a wet spec was needed. The body was manufactured from aluminium and stainless steel and powder coated in colour Ice, with the doors manufactured from solid grade laminate from Abet Laminati in colour Sand. Our laminate lockers provide a modern, heavy-duty finish, perfect for changing rooms where the lockers are to be used on a regular basis. The lockers were finished with a Lowe and Fletcher Hasp lock and black laminate number plates, an aesthetically pleasing pairing.As always, our installation team worked hard to provide the best finish to the project. CMS DANSKIN ACOUSTICS recommended a bespoke combination of industrial acoustic materials to ensure noise at work compliance at ExxonMobil Oil Refinery. The ChallengeFawley Oil Refinery is the largest oil refinery in the UK. When ExxonMobil found that the noise output from two industrial fans at the refinery exceeded the levels specified by The Control of Noise at Work Regulations, it consulted CMS Danskin Acoustics for advice. To ensure the most cost effective and high performing materials were specified, CMS Danskin Acoustics evaluated the noise reduction required on-site. Evaluation of the acoustic data revealed that noise levels in excess of 118dB at 125Hz were being emitted by the fans. Based on these criteria, the technical team at CMS Danskin Acoustics recommended the use of a combination of specialist materials from its industrial acoustic range. The SolutionTo control the low frequency-biased sound, CMS Danskin Acoustics recommended and supplied the SuperLag Quietslab Laminate with Acoustic Barrier Type WB10 combination for the fan casings and associated ductwork. Creating a multi-layered, high performance system, two layers of SuperLag Quietslab Laminate, totalling 250mm thickness, with a core of 5mm Acoustic Barrier Type WB10, were bonded onto the fan casings and ductwork. A direct coupled lagging system, SuperLag Quietslab Laminate comprises long-stranded mineral fibres thermo-set with resins for the absorption of sound at the surface, as well as a high mass inner acoustic barrier core to reduce the transmission of sound through the material. Manufactured from a weight-enhanced, high-density material, Acoustic Barrier Type WB10 provides a flexible and cost effective treatment for chemical and refinery applications. In total, 1,000m2 of the SuperLag Quietslab Laminate/Acoustic Barrier Type WB10 materials were installed around the fans and ductwork to achieve the high levels of sound reduction required.ResultsThe high performance bespoke system specified by CMS Danskin Acoustics, significantly reduced the noise generated by the fans. This enabled ExxonMobil to comply with The Control of Noise at Work Regulations by bringing noise levels under the 85dB compliance level.

Over the past two years, The Pattern Shop has undergone meticulous restoration to provide stunning and sustainable office space. The structure of the building provides more than 3,000 square metres of adaptable office space with southerly views across the River Tyne.We have been working alongside Workwell Furniture to manufacture and install Heated Z Lockers for users to store personal belongings and allow commuters to dry damp garments.Throughout this project, our team provided and installed 6 heated Z lockers to accommodate 12 users. Z-shaped lockers are an excellent choice if space optimization is key to your design. These lockers have a small footprint but maximised internal space. They can comfortably hold large personal items as well as hanging items just as clothes. The specifications of the Z Lockers were 1775mm high, 350mm wide and 450mm deep with perforation, to allow the air to flow around the lockers.The stunning Z Lockers were manufactured with an aluminium carcass, and stainless steel frame, suitable for environments with high humidity. The laminate was in beautiful ‘Pleated Teak’ from the Helmsman laminate colour chart. Formica® High Pressure Laminate (HPL) was used at Voyage of Discovery, Selfridges, Oxford Street in London. A number of striking bar furniture pieces clad with HPL were custom made and designed by Studio Toogood using Dusty Jade and Deep Marina from the Formica® Colors range.

A rooflight over the Cast Court installed in the Seventies had pretty much ‘given up the ghost’ and several leaks were apparent. There had been a history of glass cracking apparently without reason, which we attributed to thermal stress and poor edge cutting of the laminated glass. It was time for renewal.

The perfect combination of service and product from leading paint manufacturer Johnstone’s Trade has ensured that Housing Leeds’ 2014 cyclical maintenance programme has got off to a flying start. Working closely with Housing Leeds and its partnering contractor Mears and Greens Decorating, PPG Extra undertook extensive pre-project planning to ensure an accurate and appropriate paint specification was made. This resulted in the use of Johnstone’s Flame Retardant Top Coats - in both Durable Matt and Acrylic Eggshell. Johnstone’s Colour Consultants also supplied over 30 different colour schemes for each building decorated during phase one.

Newtown Primary School has been given an exterior makeover to freshen up its student areas using Crown Paints, as part of the local council’s schools’ decoration programme.

Distributed by Vertex in Israel Accoya has been used for a swimming pool decking area and under water deck. Raised grain, splitting and rotting of wood is greatly reduced if not eliminated with Accoya compared to other woods. Accoya was coated in a Blanchon oil with the Accoya underwater left natural to go grey over time.

Here is an email we received after a client installed the conservation cowled cast iron air vents to a London property in September 2022)...We recently did a project on an old coach house in a listed building. They wanted a/c but we couldn’t route water for the h2o unit and couldn’t have two big white plastic vents on the outside of the building.The solution was to combine your products, a pair of CON6 cast iron conservation vents. Pump House supplied a safe access solution around two existing high level condensers. Pump House carried out a site survey and provided full working AutoCAD drawings for approval. The access solution was manufactured in smaller modules which facilitated easier lifting and fitting. Pump House attended site on the day of installation.

Completed in 2020 and located in the British county of Wiltshire, the project maintains the school’s traditional aesthetic, all while incorporating a central garden with apple trees.The library’s faceted ceiling is a central part of the design, which evokes spreading tree branches. All of the wood panels are held up by an iron truss structure connected to large pillars, simulating the vertical nature of trunks. The properties of Parklex Prodema’s false ceiling allow continuity for the wood from the interior to the exterior, making it visible through the clerestory windows.The triangular panels that make up the complex faceted geometry are resistant, long-lasting, sustainable, and maintenance-free. They were custom manufactured for this project, including perforations for acoustic purposes, allowing sound to pass through the panel to be absorbed by the insulation behind it.The natural Okume wood panel selected by the architects provides a warm, welcoming atmosphere, creating a point of inspiration for learning. Combined with the garden landscape around it, the continuous ceiling magnifies the building’s appeal and integrates it into his surroundings.

Avoiding gas reliance when building a new house.Traditional self-build projects have always had heating systems such as gas central heating and solar panels installed. However, with the increasing costs of gas, and the uncertainty of future supplies, a secondary heating source is required.There are options such as ground heating pumps, etc. but a real heating system independent of the grid, plus a stunning focal point has to be a wood burning stove.In fact, wood logs are now the cheapest domestic heating fuel. According to the Stove Industry Alliance, wood now is “costing households 74% less per kWh than electric heating and 21% less than gas heating”. The benefits don’t end there. “Using a modern wood burning stove also costs 29% less to run than an air source heat pump. Wood logs are 87% less carbon intensive than gas, 88% less than electricity and 74% less than an air source heat pump.”Building a traditional steel pipe flue system is always an option, but steel systems are more suitable in retrofit projects where minimum disruption is required. When you are building a house from the ground up, then a more permanent and ultimately lifetime option is the better one.
