Metropolitan Works is London’s first Creative Industries Centre, offering digital manufacturing services, IT suites, training and workspace to local creative businesses and designers. Echoing the form-making processes undertaken at the Centre, the building was conceived as a series of interlocking volumes unified with a perforated aluminium cladding. On the ground floor level, a dramatic frieze by local artist Tom Price has been laser cut into the Ash & Lacy anodized aluminium panels to give the facade a sense of movement and life.

Situated in the picturesque village of Tintern in Monmouthshire, the Cistercian abbey is one of the most historic monastic ruins in Wales. In 2013 work started at the abbey to replace the roof of the gift shop, which had exceeded its serviceable life. The brief for this project was to not only repair the failing roof, but to bring the abbey to the forefront of modern-day roofing technology with the installation of a state-of-the-art photovoltaic (PV) system. Given these requirements, BauderSOLAR’s innovative PV solution, SOLfixx Plus, was a natural choice.

An intelligent Advanced Go panel has been installed in The Steading, the home of sculptor and furniture maker, Tim Stead MBE.The Steading is an A-Listed building, located in Blainslie near Lauder in the Scottish Borders, and was both the creative centre and home to the Stead family across several decades. It was purchased by the Tim Stead Trust in 2021 and a programme of restoration work has included the addition of an Advanced Go new-generation, single-loop fire alarm control panel to protect this historic home.The Steading is considered Tim’s masterpiece with an interior that was transformed over many years. The interior is completely clad in sculpted wood: floors, walls, ceilings, stairs, cupboards, beds, a grandfather clock, sink, conservatory, hanging sculptures, desks and so on – all made by Stead himself. This exceptional building now aims to become a hub for practical expertise in everything to do with wood and the environment, hosting a variety of day and residential courses in the unique environment of The Steading.Fire and security service providers, Safe Services, installed the Advanced Go fire alarm panel in The Steading and were involved from the design stage though to installation and commissioning. The Advanced Go panel is integrated with EMS Firecell radio equipment for a complete cable-free fire system – which was an essential requirement to preserve and protect the unique interior of the building.

The roofs of The Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council offices had fallen into a poor condition and a large amount of standing water was threatening to leak into the offices below. With the office roof areas in such a poor state, the council turned to Polyroof to refurbish nearly 1,000 square metres of roof, split into 13 areas, before they fell into a further state of disrepair. DTL Construction, a local Polyroof Approved Contractor, were tasked with installing the Protec System, removing the issue of standing water and giving the roof a long service life, whilst giving the council peace of mind that leaks would not pose an issue in future.The standing water was cleared before the existing roof materials were stripped back in order to install the new system. This allowed a new warm-roof system to be installed, along with new cut-to-falls insulation. Polyroof’s Protec Cut-to-Falls insulation is an innovative two-layer system which doesn’t only improve thermal performance, it also directs standing water away from the roof.Following this, the BBA-approved Protec system was used to seamlessly waterproof the entirety of the office roofs. The system, once inspected by Polyropof’s Technical Services team, was issued with a 20-year guarantee, so the client could now have reassurance their roof would last for decades to come.

Earlier this year we were extremely proud to transform the cycle parking provision for employees and visitors at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London.Guy’s and St Thomas’ is one of the largest NHS trusts in England and they are true pioneers in health research with upwards of 500 studies currently running. The trust is renowned for high-quality teaching and education and manages community services across London.Cyclehoop worked in collaboration with TfL to radically update the parking provision for cyclists at the hospital, with the installation of 36 Jan Kuipers Two Tier Bike Racks. Cyclehoop is the official UK supplier of these Dutch Two Tier Racks. This particular product is ideal for areas tight on space as the tiered system means that less floor space is taken up in comparison to traditional racks. This renders the Two Tier the smart option for maximising cycle parking in confined spaces.The racks and the entire project received positive feedback. Specialist refurbishment and planned works contractor AYM Contracting approached EnviroBuild to supply adjustable decking joist supports for a commercial project near Liverpool Street in the heart of London.The 40 m² rooftop office terrace needed a low-maintenance, durable substructure to safely support Hyperion composite deck boards, so it was decided that MESA Support pedestals would be the best product to achieve this.The SolutionWorking with award-winning international construction services company ISG, EnviroBuild fulfilled the order for over 100 MESA support decking feet. Automatic sliding doors provide patient comfort at outstanding healthcare facilityThomas Audley Ward at Homerton Hospital, London - The trust operates acute services from a single site: Homerton University Hospital, which opened in 1986. Based on an aggregation of ratings across all of the core services provided from the hospital, the hospital has been rated by Care Quality Commission as ‘Outstanding’.Architect – Hunters ArchitectsProduct – SL500 bi-parting doors in slim-eco profiles with fixed side screens of up to 8 panels covering 6.7m on 4 separate bays.The works encompass a full ward refurbishment comprising of layout changes, floor, wall and ceiling finishes, sanitary appliances, mechanical and electrical installations, fixtures and fittings renewal and internal doors.Working alongside the project lead architect, we assisted with the design to create 4 new ward entrance screens, to assist with reducing noise and air pollution, creating a more welcoming and comfortable patient environment. Our slim-eco door profiles were chosen and also provided with our unique TightSeal system, minimising any gaps around the doors. In addition to the door profiles, directional activation units were installed, contributing even further to eliminate unnecessary opening cycles. 

An entrance that needed reviving and improved functionGeorge Eliot Hospital is based in Nuneaton, Warwickshire. It provides a full range of emergency and elective medical services to the local area, including maternity services.Project Year: 2022Product: UniturnProject Background: We were contacted directly from the hospital’s Estates Department to review an existing traditional sliding door entrance, with a view to proposing a solution to upgrade to a high capacity revolving door. An important need was to improve the temperature in the reception area, enabling climate control.The existing entrance lobby was too narrow to accommodate both the revolving door and necessary adjacent pass doors to meet Equal Access requirements and so we had to come up with a different solution.Solution: To overcome the narrow lobby entrance we proposed to locate the revolving door in front of the existing lobby’s footprint, which in turn required the building’s foundation slab to be extended under the revolving door location.This solution required detailed technical and design input from FES to the client’s nominated building contractor and design team to ensure that the build was both structurally sound, aesthetically pleasing and met the relevant building regulations.The Uniturn has improved accessibility in and out of the hospital and has provided energy savings and temperature control, resulting in a successful project.

The Centre’s retail units are supplied via ramps to these service decks, which carry the delivery traffic above the stores, plus the decks are also used for car parking, meaning that in addition to being fully exposed to weathering, they are subject to almost continuous dynamic loading from traffic up to and including heavy articulated HGV’s. Unfortunately, despite past attempts at repair and resealing, there had continued to be water ingress through these joints, both into the structure and into the retail units that are directly below, resulting in disruption, damage and cost for everyone involved. The innovative Emseal SJS system that includes integral cover plates, but with no mechanical fixings required, was selected by the Project Engineers as being ideal to accommodate the necessary movement, seal the joints and withstand the traffic loadings. Additionally, as access was only required from the top deck to install the Emseal SJS System, Cemplas was able to carry out the works quickly and keep disruption to an absolute minimum.

With a steadily expanding workforce of 200+ highly skilled software engineers, space is at a premium at Amazon’s development centre in Edinburgh. Working with architect, Hassell, and contractor, Clark Contracts, Style was specified to deliver a partitioning solution that would enable the open-plan conference and training room to be segregated into smaller rooms, as required.Installing two Dorma Hüppe Variflex moveable walls either side of a central column, the large area can now be quickly split into two individual rooms.With an incredible 59db Acoustic rating, this is almost an entirely sound-proofed solution, which means there is no disturbance from events taking place either side of the wall. The fabric wrapped Kvadrat Lloyd finish is the perfect complement to the contemporary interior décor.“This easy to manoeuvre, manual moveable wall is the ideal solution when you want to quickly sub-divide space and turn one room into two,” said David Louden, Style’s director for Scotland.“The Variflex panels are manufactured separately to the frame, making it cost-effective to replace a single panel lining if damage occurs, or to update all the panels when the room is re-decorated in the future.“Further contributing to a low carbon footprint, the Variflex moveable wall has an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) in accordance with ISO 14025 and EN 15804, making it a highly sustainable system.”Style has also been commissioned to provide the Amazon development centre with a programme of planned servicing and maintenance, helping ensure an extended working life for the moveable walls.“A regular check-up ensures continued smooth operation, compliance with Health and Safety Legislation, and for acoustic moveable walls, it also ensures its acoustic integrity remains intact,” said Louden.“Regular servicing also minimises the chance of any minor issue escalating into a more expensive repair later down the line. Liverpool Street station first opened in 1874 and by 1895 it had the largest number of platforms than any other terminal railway station in London. The Royal Voluntary Service Hertford branch wanted to provide a lunch club to bring older people together to enjoy a hot nutritious meal and socialise with friends at the same time. The room to be used for the club was not fit for purpose. Altro donated floors and walls to transform the room to create a warm and welcoming environment. Harmer Drainage high performance Roof Outlets and SML above ground drainage were recently specified for a new, forward thinking children’s hospital in Liverpool.The Alder Hey Children’s Health Park is a large £250m project developed to improve the paediatric medical facility and enhance the experience of both patients and staff. The aim is to set the hospital as a new benchmark for the delivery of paediatric care in the UK and around the world. It includes six wards, a large critical care unit, 16 theatres and a host of clinical services, together with shops and cafes.

Viking Line is one of the market-leaders in passenger transport on the northern Baltic Sea. The company runs passenger, leisure and freight transport services on its seven vessels. When the passenger ferry ‘Cinderella’ was due for a refit, including the laying down of new floors, Amtico Marine was chosen for the wide range of designs and sizes. Pale Maple was chosen for the crew’s canteen, a light wood design to create a warm atmosphere. Ceramic Frost and Linear Metallic Jewel were combined in different parts of the duty-free shop.

Leeds City College, the third largest further education college in the UK, has opened a new city-centre campus to offer modern-day vocational study programmes. The campus is a £14 million new build extension and refurbishment of a Grade II listed building into a state-of-the-art specialist vocational centre with training kitchens, a commercial training restaurant, hair and beauty teaching facilities and commercial salons as well as a refectory, library and student services. Being a refurbishment project, the build had a number of challenges.

Since 2010 the Hub South East initiative has been a development partner to many different entities in the public sector in Scotland, working on the regeneration of infrastructure and local services across the country to help ‘level up’ many local communities.As part of this long-term strategy the development of Calderwood Primary School in East Calder would add a new state-of-the-art learning facility to the West Lothian village, provide hundreds of school places to young pupils and sit at the heart of the wider residential masterplan for the area.

In Manhattan Loft gardens, they have a dry install system and are going to use the recommended system from Sika, then fit the floor fully bonded with our SW890 adhesive. Installation and site visits are part of our service. With large residential tower developments, there will normally be slabs for each floor. These will take at least two years to dry out completely. This means that unless the slabs have a DPM applied there will always be a chance of moisture affecting whatever is laid on the floor be it a cradle system or dry install underfloor heating system.

Spitbank Fort was originally built in 1878 and was part of a group of forts designed to defend the mouth of the Solent. This project created challenging circumstances for wood flooring because the structure is metal and is over 130 years old. Surrounded by sea creating high, fluctuating humidity and the structure was round so most of the boards had to be re-manufactured to fit. There were height restrictions because there were numerous arches creating low points and all the services had to be laid on the existing substrate thus raising the finished floor level to accommodate them

Verde is situated on the junction of Pitt Street and Wellington Street in Newcastle. Comprising of two buildings forming a V-shape, the facade runs parallel to both streets. These two structures are clad in green glazed terracotta tile laid horizontally across both buildings with a selection of projecting tiles to create a sense of movement and signalling the entrance to the development. For the glazing specification, the building was thermally modelled as part of the Part L Assessment with performance requirements for the windows generated by its outcomes and outlined by the projects building services engineer.

The National Memorial Arboretum (NMA) in Staffordshire is winner of the Large Visitor Attraction category in the Visit England Awards for Excellence 2018. Designed by Glenn Howells Architects (GHA), this stunning building is the UK’s year-round centre of Remembrance - a spiritually uplifting place which honours the fallen, recognises service and sacrifice and fosters pride in the UK. The building engages materially with its environment and harnesses a soft material concept of larch timber and natural stone. Internally this is complemented by the installation of 1000sqm of Troldtekt wood wool acoustic ceiling panels.

Blackhorse Road Railway Station is situated on the corner of Forest Road and Blackhorse Road in Walthamstow serving the area with Victoria Line and Overground services throughout Greater London. The station features four platforms and at peak times, Blackhorse Road sees trains departing every 2 minutes on the Victoria line and 8 trains an hour for the Overground.The main entrance was to be refreshed and recladding this with VitraNamel was the chosen façade panel because of its superior anti-graffiti properties and hard wearing nature of the vitreous enamel coating.

We have been working alongside ModuleCo, the provider of fast-track modular construction of complex, fully-fitted healthcare buildings to the NHS and other healthcare service providers. This has involved us fitting out the facilities in situ at ModuleCo’s manufacturing facility, so they’re ready to deliver to hospitals around the country. The modular buildings we have fitted out include operating theatres, reception areas and consulting rooms, which are assembled offsite at the ModuleCo factory, and then delivered to the hospital location and put straight to use.

The area of Bermondsey Spa in South London was a vast development project in 2017 and 2018, the Bermondsey Square Hotel being a focal point of the area. Millbury Nursing Home is a purpose-built residential nursing home.The Development will consist of a new fully serviced single storey extension which will double the capacity taking it from 66 bedrooms to 132.The works consist of a new extension incorporating 66 single bedrooms with associated nursing accommodation, visitor accommodation, administration and staff areas, dining & living facilities & all associated accommodation to ground floor level with associated alterations to elevations. Being able to deliver this extension quickly and with minimal disruption to the current residents was of the upmost importance.

Ginni Bilham, lead Interior Designer was tasked with updating and transforming the Bedale Centre which provides specialist mental health, substance misuse and learning disability services. Ginni’s main aim was to create a tranquil feeling throughout the facility, which in turn would help users of the centre to feel relaxed and comfortable during their visits. ”The décor was previously very plain. Everyone loves a trip to the seaside and feels refreshed after a day by the sea so I wanted to create that atmosphere within the Centre.” Explains Ginni.

As part of a 200 Streetpod purchase deal with East Midlands Trains (EMT), a single Streetpod was installed amongst standard bike racks at EMT head office to trial the product to their own independent standards. “This is a fantastic product that will be very beneficial to our cyclists. Face fixed panels on constant display on this student accommodation block meant that the original rivet specification was changed to a powder-coated self-drilling fastener, to eliminate the inherent problem of damage often caused by riveters denting or scratching the panels.Fixfast was also able to colour-match the fasteners to a unique NCS colour required, enabling the fasteners to seamlessly blend in with the panels."Good service, quick response, quick advisory on delivery dates. The demand for centrally located, furnished apartments with services similar to the hotel trade is on the rise. The apartment block in Berlin offers 135 apartments with made-to-measure floor plans and designs à la carte.Depending on their needs, tenants choose an apartment ranging from 17 to 54 square metres that combines all the comforts of an exclusive hotel suite with the feeling of being at home. The sliding doors are made of toughened laminated glass with grey mirrored film and – depending on building structure – attached to either the wall or the ceiling with HAWA Junior 80 GP hardware.

For Genesis Middlesbrough FC is the local team of most of the staff and when Cleveland Land Services Ltd were doing work to the stairs leading to the Directors Box at the stadium we were pleased they kept the work local and went with a Genesis Heavy Duty Nosing. The NHD range is designed for use with Carpet, Carpet Tiles or other resilient flooring in heavy use areas and the Double Channel design chosen not only allowed for the team colours to be utilised but also provides a wider area of anti-slip tread for areas of high traffic.

A Howe Green 5000 Series Aluminium Access Cover was supplied to The Fish & Chip Shop in Islington. An unobtrusive access solution was required to cover the kitchen’s essential mains drainage services and provide fast access to them for easy maintenance. The access cover was fitted into quarry-tiled steps leading to the kitchen. It was designed to be virtually invisible to prevent any slips or trips – essential within a busy restaurant environment. The cover is double-sealed which means water or bacteria ingress is preventable ensuring that the highest hygiene standards can be maintained.
