Crown Paints has achieved top marks for a prestigious school in the historic city of York. Bootham School, an independent day and boarding school for 3 to 18 year olds, has harnessed the expertise of Crown Trade to protect their historic building. The windows of Fox House, which is situated on Portland Street in the city centre, were in need of attention and the Crown Paints Specification Team were called in to help. After a site survey by the team, Crown Trade Stronghold Exterior Gloss and Crown Trade Stronghold Exterior Primer Undercoat were specified for the job.

Taking 10 years to build, and costing £23 million, Cambridge Central Mosque is the first purpose-built mosque in the city, being described as ‘the greenest mosque in Europe’. To reduce the noise impact for both local residents and worshippers, our Jakoustic® Reflective acoustic fencing was installed, resulting in a safe, secure, anti-climb perimeter with an aesthetically pleasing noise barrier that blends in with the surrounding area. This is achieved using a flat timber profile along with interlocking ‘V’ boards which reduces the rate at which sound waves can pass through the barrier.

Located on the former Anglia Ruskin University site, in the heart of Chelmsford, City Park West is a newly created vibrant community. The scheme started in 2013 and has already delivered homes and new green space with commercial units. The second phase includes the construction of 426 new homes, 4,900sqm of commercial floor space, new public open spaces and underground parking. RCM were appointed by Conneely Facades to supply fabricated Alucobond A2 cassettes, Y-wall sheathing boards, Aluminium façade support frame and fixings to the construction of phase 2.

A Selectaglaze secondary glazing treatment to a set of patio doors in a suburban home in Cockfosters, North London makes a living room warmer and more comfortable for a couple’s new born baby. A Series 10 2-pane horizontal sliding unit was installed to the patio doors. The opening was 2m x 2m and it was important that the treatment would match the existing sightlines. Timber grounds were fixed into the reveal, which had skirting boards. Installers scribed into the timber frame to create matching grooves and nuances to fit snug in the reveal and over the skirting.

Creating highly adaptable working space, Style has installed four Dorma moveable wall systems to the Berkshire offices of a world leading multinational pharmaceutical and life sciences company. The semi-automatic partitions can be used to quickly divide a laboratory learning facility as well as office space, creating smaller areas or opening up the area as required. For this high-spec project, Style worked with architects, Perkins and Will, and contractor, Tetris Bluu. Finished in a blue fabric combined with magnetic white boards, the semi-automatic operation walls are both functional and practical.

Home House is an award winning private members club, located in Portman Square, London. The Outdoor Deck Company were commissioned to install over 220sqm of new Ecodek composite decking on Buzon support pedestals to create a large decked terrace area within the club’s private garden. Home House were looking for a durable, minimal-maintenance, anti-slip deck with superior safety qualities without compromising on aesthetics for this glamorous outdoor space. The carefully selected Ecodek Heritage composite deck boards delivered all this and more….

One Hyde Park is a major residential and retail complex located in Knightsbridge, London. The development includes three retail units totaling 35,800 m2 and 86 residential properties with prices starting at around £20 million. The Outdoor Deck Company supplied and installed premium grade Ipe timber decking to all roofs across all four buildings. The deck boards were supported by 28,000 DPH Buzon pedestals. The project was a success and the Outdoor Deck Company were proud to be involved in installing their first-class products to one of London’s most prestigious developments.

The owners of Beech Cottage, a private residence located in Maidenhead commissioned us to install a composite deck spanning the back of their newly refurbished family home. The project involved the removal of the old deck and frame. Our in-house team designed a brand new 100sqm deck area including steps and facias to the rear and side. The new Durapine posts and joists were installed to create a solid raised frame to prevent rotting. High quality Composite deck boards were chosen for their durability plus they require minimal maintenance which was important to the client.

There is, rightly, a continuing trend towards sustainability and sustainable design being spearheaded by forward-thinking architects and designers and building product manufacturers all keen to minimise waste in the construction industry.  Initiatives and schemes from PEFC™ and FSC® certification through to Cradle-to-Cradle design, circular economy LEED, BREEAM, and DGNB are all leaders in the fields of sustainability. This is helping drive manufacturers and specifiers to think about how they work and the products they use. One of the manufacturers which has been championing this is Danish wood wool panel manufacturer Troldtekt. Both FSC® and PEFC™ certified, the company has set strict environmental targets for its manufacture and products culminating in a transparent roadmap in its 2013 CSR report. This has led the company to be one of Europe’s most vociferous advocates for sustainable design and one which contributes positively to BREEAM, WELL, LEED and DGNB-certifications. It was recently awarded the prestigious Danish Industry Award for Green Transformation presented by HRH Crown Princess Mary.  The company’s green stance has not gone unnoticed among designers and ethical designers such as Sibley Grove which pioneer strategies that deliver sustainable interior schemes. For example, when they were appointed to re-design The Chamberlain Hotel’s public areas, sustainability was paramount. The studio’s unique approach to design assesses the environmental and social impact of every design decision, from the origin of the materials to where they end up at the end of their lifecycle. As a result, they specified as many sustainable and Cradle-to-Cradle certified materials as possible, including Troldtekt’s panels Cradle to Cradle-certified to silver level. By specifying these, the environmental impact is minimal. Troldtekt is circular and the material can go back to nature as a nutrient in the biological circuit or be included as a raw material in the production of cement in the technical circuit. By adopting a circular approach to design, Sibley Grove removes the traditional linear system of consumption and waste that plagues the design industry. It considers the entire lifecycle of a product, ensuring materials are reused or integrated back into the natural world. This reduces demand on resources, reduces landfill and encourages the production of clean, reusable materials. Troldtekt acoustic panels, manufactured from certified wood, a 100% natural material, and cement extracted from Danish mineral resources, achieve high levels of technical performance and is free of harmful substances so can therefore be returned to nature. They offer projects high sound absorption, high durability and natural breathability with low cost life cycle performance and sustainability. Safeshield XT Reflect A2-s1, d0 fire rated wall membrane was used in the recladding of the Genting Casino, Premier and Holiday Inns.RIVERLIGHTS DERBY, MORELEDGEA complete re-cladding on the exterior of the Genting Casino, Premier Inn, Holiday Inn, part of the Riverlights location in Derby city centre, including Safeshield XT Reflect A2-s1, d0 fire rated construction membrane.Oakleigh Contracts were chosen to undertake this large-scale project, their first re-cladding project of this size, with technical input from Permavent to ensure the correct technical specifications were achieved. Genting Casinos are a large chain of popular gaming destinations with locations across the UK and America. The property owner of the Riverlights location decided to take no risks with their new cladding, in an effort to protect people and the building in the face of the recent issues with fire spreading through and behind exterior cladding. They chose to change the existing boards to non-combustible alternatives and added Safeshield XT Reflect A2-s1, d0 fire rated construction membrane to the walls under the new boards. Safeshield was chosen for it’s high fire rating, adding another layer of protection against fire behind the cladding and inside the cavity, but also for its superior thermal properties. Safeshield XT Reflect’s reflective technology allows for greater energy efficiency in the building as it reflects heat, decreasing the emissivity of the wall cavity and reducing energy loss. Oakleigh Contracts also praised Safeshield for it’s easy and intuitive installation, as well as being extremely robust both during and after installation

The University of Central Lancashire development of a new UCLAN Student Centre 7,304 sqm and University Squares 8,440 sqm.Soundis was approached by BAM Construction to supply the Absorb-R WoodTec Walls Slats and the Absorb-R SofTone Fabric Baffles. These where installed by our installation partner UK Acoustic SystemsThe WoodTec Wall Slats are based on a fibre gypsum board which has excellent properties regarding both fire safety and acoustics. The slats are less sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity which results in 100% straight aligned slats over their full lifetime.

Designed by Trevor Wilson (Architecture 37 o) & constructed by Harbour City Builders, Accoya was chosen for the cladding of this Orewa beachfront home. The Accoya profiles were created using a custom rusticated board with a bandsawn face, before being painted and finished using Resene Ironsand which provided the overall dark matt effect. The bandsawn face shows off the bespoke natural wood grain of the Accoya wood, giving it a warm texture in comparison to the concrete. Because of Accoya’s improved stability, coatings such as this can last up to two times longer in comparison to other hardwoods.

Project: Steiner Academy, Frome Completed on Site: 2014 Timber Cladding: Welsh Larch This project saw untreated Welsh Larch used in 2 of our standard profiles. All the Horizontal Cladding installed on the project was our Double Chamfer/ Rhombus profile, NWCC1. The Vertical Cladding being supplied in the form of our T&G NWC2 board. Both of these profiles are machined from an Ex 25 x 150mm section size, to the grading criteria of Western Larch as specified by the Architect at Aedas/AHR. Over time this timber will weather to the silver/ grey that can be expected of from Larch.

The BriefIn August 2016, we were contacted about a new build and enclosed link walkway project at St John’s School in Enfield. We were invited on board at the point where the local planning department had declined the initial design for a space between two school buildings. We were tasked with providing the shelter required for the space and to use our Kensington Mono Pitch Canopy (which most closely matched the planning requirement) to make it happen. This is significant because the area was one where we would not normally propose using the Kensington system.

Timber Cladding: NORclad Painted ThermowoodCoating: Sansin SDF Paint SystemNORclad supplied over 18,500/LM of Painted product for this project, primarily across 3 different finished widths; 120mm (6500LM), 136mm (6100LM), and 178mm (4800/LM). A couple of additional board sizes were also supplied for reveals and particular detailing areas.Thermowood is the perfect Timber species for coating, being a timber with almost zero moisture movement the chance of coating failures is minimal. Supplied pre-finished with the Sansin SDF system, the material was ready to be installed as soon as it was delivered to site.

Wallbarn was approached by a commercial client. The client, with a rapidly growing workforce, was expanding, but wanted to utilise existing space to avoid moving premises. A disused rooftop was earmarked for conversion into an outdoor eating and leisure area for staff. Wallbarn’s unique iDecking system was chosen to deck the terrace. Our service team scoped the project, proposing 313m2 of ‘Terra’ iDecking boards, the EasyClick aluminium rail system, underpinned by our heavy-duty MegaPad adjustable pedestals. We were on site before, during and after installation to support the installers throughout the project. The terrace is transformed into a beautiful space.

The client was looking to replace an old 67 metre long wooden walkway surrounding a pool. Their contractor recommended the Decking system due to the low profile aluminium substructure and moisture-proof composite boards which require far less ongoing maintenance. The installer removed the old decking to reveal the sub base, then used Wallbarn’s heavy duty MegaPad pedestals to underpin the iDecking rail system. Our proposed laying pattern complemented the architect’s original design, drawing the eye down the length of the walkway. The entire job took two weeks to complete. The client is delighted with the results.

Product: Canadian Western Red Cedar Over 7000/LM of Canadian Western Red Cedar was provided for this job in London, a workspace environment is suited well to the timber cladding façade. An untreated board, machined to our NWCC1 Chamfered Cladding profile. All associated WRC machined trims, high pressure treated imported battens were also supplied for this project. Being a very high quality of timber both visually the minimal knot content, along with the natural durability the species offers, making Canadian Western Red Cedar a favourite amongst architect and clients alike.

Leading stainless steel specialist, GEC Anderson limited, have released details of an exciting new ‘wet zone’ concept. Available now, the new wet zone option enables specifiers to include a pressed recess anywhere within the stainless steel worktop area. Typically, the recess would be formed around sink bowl(s) but it can also be used to create lowered areas for other applications. For example, to locate chopping boards or to act as a general catchment area. The pressed recess detail is 3mm deep and can be formed in any size and position. It has a minimum radius of 10mm.

A Midlands-based housing association turned to Crown Trade Fastflow to deliver a splash of colour, with a low odour application and fast-drying times for the comfort and convenience of residents. Lyng Community Association, a not-for-profit organisation, brought in Crown Paints to specify the pioneering water-based system for the redecoration of corridors in three blocks of flats in West Bromwich. Doors, window sills and skirting boards were decorated with Crown Trade Fastflow Quick Dry Gloss, over Crown Trade Fastflow Quick Dry Primer Undercoat. The work was carried out by Hankinson Painting Contractors from their West Bromwich site.

This project involved the construction of a Data Centre just outside Dublin, with a focus on incorporating a green roof. MOY collaborated with the client, their design team, the main contractor, and the roofing installer to execute the roof installation for an extensive green roof. The green roof utilized MOY's Paraflex FM Global approved Warm Roof System, featuring Paratherm T 120mm insulation board and an anti-root cap sheet. The final touch included the installation of a sedum blanket grown in Ireland, containing native Irish sedum species registered in the national biodiversity database, creating a durable and vibrant living roof.

Exceptional homes in the perfect location St Elphin’s Park retirement village is set within 14 acres of landscaped grounds, located within the Derbyshire Dales. The centrepiece building, St Elphin’s House, started life as a private residence, becoming an exclusive spa in the 19th century, and latterly, a well-known girls’ boarding school, St Elphin’s Girls School. This Victorian schoolhouse has been restored stone by stone. Surrounding the Victorian grandeur of St Elphin's House, and built to echo the appeal of a traditional Derbyshire hamlet, are attractively designed retirement properties including apartments, cottages and mews cottages.

Our client designed and built a spectacular contemporary new home. He decided to include a sauna to complement his level deck central bathtub in the master bathroom. The brief was to create a light modern cabin with clean low iron glazing to the main facia. The space allocated was wide but shallow and the challenge was to achieve a cabin which appeared spacious and comfortable for the two occupants to enjoy together. We chose a free standing, multi- climate heater around which carefully designed bespoke benching was constructed in smooth blond Aspen to match the deep horizontal wall boards.

Our lightweight MaxiBeam System in a warm oak finish adorns the ceiling in a newly renovated 76,000 sq ft, multi tenanted commercial office building in Bristol. The design brief was to create a modern and welcoming reception space as well as an upgrade to lift core areas with the purposes of attracting new tenants to this centrally located office building. The ceiling design featured 40mm x 150mm MaxiBeams finished in a Warm Oak Supalami, FR Class 0, also incorporating a 12mm Black Acoustic Backing Board to provide further acoustic benefits. “The Venesta cubicles offer easy maintenance and cleaning. The product has really improved since the original product twenty years ago and there are some lovely colour schemes to choose from.” - Christina Roper, Boarding Administrator. Having previously installed Venesta cubicles in the late 90s, the school decided it was time for a total refurbishment of the washroom areas, and Vanesta was the natural choice for this new project. Needing something that was easy to clean and maintain, built to last and simple to install, Award cubicles in High Pressure Laminate (HPL) were chosen with matching Solid Grade Laminate vanity units.

Founded in 2002, the Gardens of Peace Muslim cemetery is located in a green belt area in Chigwell, London. Beautifully landscaped and purpose-built, the cemetery is a calm, comforting space for the local Muslim community. Earlier this year the Outdoor Deck Company were commissioned to supply and install high quality composite deck boards to create a large deck area surrounding the new cemetery building. Providing an attractive but future-proof solution, composite decking was specified for its anti-slip, mould-free and low-maintenance attributes providing a safe, less slippery surface for the year-round cemetery visitors.

A new Business Development Centre, providing professional training for local businesses, is also to be a core feature.Architects IBI Taylor Young have created a striking modern design, incorporating a semi-rotunda feature and a three-storey overhanging box structure.The ChallengeThere were two key challenges on this project for sub-contractors Sound Interiors Limited. Firstly, the unusual design called for non-standard panel sizes. This is becoming all too common as contemporary architecture moves increasingly toward the unique and, in some cases, the downright eccentric.Secondly, the five-storey structure is located in a windy area; so windy, in fact, that, less than a mile away, you can find the Port of Liverpool 10MW wind farm, capable of generating electricity for 5,500 homes. Where wind is a factor, the pull-over performance of any building boards used is critical, particularly during construction when wind can penetrate the structure and create areas of negative wind pressure.The SolutionSize is EverythingAs modern British architecture moves away from the conventional, the challenges for construction professionals like Sound Interiors increase. Whilst, in the past, construction has largely been a logistically focused endeavour — the ‘when’ and ‘where’ of it all — increasingly, the question that dominates the pre-construction phase of a project is ‘How?’The skill and experience of Sound Interiors came into play not only in applying their technical knowhow to the challenges of constructing an overhanging box and creating a curving rotunda from flat building boards, it also influenced their choice of materials.Said John Sheeran, Contracts Manager at Sound Interiors Limited, “We opted for Euroform’s Versapanel on this project — and numerous other projects — because it’s easy to work with and reliable. This is a windy area of Liverpool. Work hours had to be agreed with the client to keep disruption to other ongoing work at the site to a minimum and insulation upgrades were necessary to satisfy building regulations. Center Parcs Whinfell is an award-winning village located on the edge of the stunning Lake District National Park in Cumbria. Offering one of the most picturesque destinations for short break holidays, it is a haven for nature-lovers and provides countless activities to keep the whole family happily. New to the village is The Pancake House, an all-time guest favourite restaurant offering sweet and savoury pancakes in traditional Dutch style. Center Parcs needed to replace their well-used decking area outside of the restaurant which forms a main thoroughfare around the the village's eateries, overlooking the water. Gripsure's Classic deck boards were specified for this public walkway to ensure the safety of their guests; with 3 non-slip aggregate inserts, our Classic deck boards achieves the highest non-slip safety rating on the market. Not only that, this profile has a smooth board offering a stylish and contemporary finish, in keeping with Center Parc's modern facilities. In addition to this, Gripsure's Boardwalk Heritage profile was specified to replace a decked bridge connecting the eating quarters to the rest of the village. This innovative profile features 100m wide aggregate insert, offering excellent coverage whilst managing to retain the feel of using a natural product. The finishing touches to the project were applied to the steps connecting the different deck levels. For this, a custom profile was created for stair nosings using bold and contrasting coloured aggregate to alert guests and staff of the height change, whilst maintaining a sophisticated look. The high aggregate coverage ensures optimum safety for little feet running around at speed, big feet which have just been in the water, and friendly paws along for the ride. The 25 luxury safari tents aim to celebrate the simple things in life, offering a place to escape, chillout, connect, sleep and reset.Gripsure recently provided 9,165 linear meters of our Classic boards to be used for boardwalks around the campsite, as well as porch areas outside each tent. It was the second installment of Gripsure decking at The Wave.
