Located on the Eemmeer, a place in the middle of nature, and away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The architect has created a connection with the outdoors in, utilising large fixed skylights from Glazing Vision to bring daylight into the house and frame the surroundings.Bringing in daylight with large minimalist skylights was a key requirement for the architect. The horizontal application of large glass surfaces demands a lot from the design and after many discussions, the architect was confident that Glazing Vision was the rooflight manufacturer that could implement what they had in mind.No framework in sight. Insulated glass with excellent insulation values. Glass that blends seamlessly into the architect’s design. A way to bring the outdoor feeling inside.Three multipart skylights have made this architectural vision become a reality.The back-to-back angles fit in very well with the rest of the modern contemporary interiors. To make it possible to darken the rooms, Glazing Vision has applied custom-made sun protection from Topshade.At the spot where the river Eem flows into the Eemmeer, architect De Kort van Schaik designed the country residence ‘t Raboes. The clients wanted to create a place where they could fully experience nature, but also withdraw from the hustle and bustle of the city.The house consists of three parts, connected by three covered terraces. Concrete walls and floors which blend seamlessly into the environment and large windows that frame the polder landscape.All energy on ‘t Raboes is generated locally. The solar cells on the roof of the marina building supply electricity. A heat pump that uses the surface water of the Eemmeer provides heating for the house and swimming pool.In the living areas, wood stoves have been used, all which use wood from their own grounds, providing readily available extra heating capacity.A beautiful contrast is created by the yellow epoxy bathroom furniture, designed by Sabine Marcelis. A piece of furniture consisting of a bath, wash bath and shower stands as a free-standing sculpture in the concrete bathroom. The skylight forms a completely frameless glass roof, which gives you the feeling of being outside even more.Sabine Marcelis states that she has designed her dream bathroom. The subtle rotation of the furniture gives you a fantastic view of the landscape from the bath.Taken aback by this stunning property, the architectural press has been impressed with all aspects of the design. De Volkskrant gives the Huis op ‘t Raboes five stars. “The Rotterdam architectural firm De Kort Van Schaik designed a house in which you live with the elements and at the same time are protected against them, thanks to a thick concrete coat.”

CHALLENGEAn ambitious project, and one of the first certified PassivHaus homes in the UK - the Denby Dale PassivHaus in West Yorkshire, had to to use 90% less energy for space heating than the average UK dwelling – with a space heating need of only 15 kWh/m2/ year. The Sauna360 health suite was installed within the new Ponteland School and Leisure Centre during 2020. The health suite comprising a Whirlpool spa, Herb sauna, Salt sauna, Salt steam , Feature showers, Relaxation bench and Loungers. Sauna360 created a continuous glass frontage to the thermal rooms. The beautiful Aspen timbers of the Saunas and the large format ceramics of the Steam room draw in the guests. The high ceiling required for access into the Spa enhances the spacious feel of the area.

Requiring a professional yet comfortable breakout area to welcome distinguished guests including civil servants and senior politicians, the Customer Experience Suite at Cassidian needed a bold and contemporary scheme to reflect the company’s principles of encouraging collaboration and innovation. The creative design solution provided by Paramount Interiors transformed the interiors into an open and well-lit environment with sleek features such as glass partitions and a plane tail rogue column nodding to Cassidian’s aeronautical connections and adding to a futuristic feel.

Seveme’s expertise in metal structure works combined with Pyroguard’s multi-functional range of toughened fire safety glass, Pyroguard Protect, enabled the build of the new Algeria Gulf Bank headquarters. Through the informed specification of additional counterpanes, the curtain wall of this futuristic building was able to achieve an EI120 fire rating, as well as effective solar control. Meanwhile in the internal lobby, where safety and style were key, a unique composition that combined both requirements was used.

Inspired by and integrated within the natural landscape around it, the River Building at Grace Farms, which was designed by SANAA, gently slopes, bends and ‘pools’ with its surroundings.For a place in which people gather to experience nature, encounter the arts, pursue justice, foster community and explore faith, the use of glass, steel, concrete and wood is particularly fitting. In the building’s bathrooms, d line sanitary ware was used for its simple lines and the natural rawness of its material.

Querrey Biomedical Research Center will provide critical space for scientists researching cancer, heart disease, neurodegenerative disorders, diabetes, and other critical areas of study. The Perkins+Will design features a curved glass exterior with flexible floor plans for laboratories. The tower profile references and updates the soaring traditional Gothic buildings on Northwestern’s Chicago campus, presenting a striking profile on the city’s skyline and leading the way for future campus development.

Leading insulation manufacturer, URSA, has been selected as the specifier of choice at the redevelopment of historic London building, The Whiteley. The former Whiteley's shopping centre in London's Bayswater is the setting for one of the most impressive property redevelopments in Europe, in a £1 billion project to convert the century-old shopping arcade into a high luxury residential, hotel, restaurant and retail complex covering more than 90,000 square metres. In one of the company’s largest single project specifications to date, contractors Laing O’Rourke and architects, Foster and Partners, have opted for over 5,000 square metres of URSA’s glass wool insulation. Ian Claydon, Technical Manager for URSA UK, commented: “This is undoubtedly one of the largest building projects in Europe and so being part of that is incredibly exciting. “We have worked closely with the scheme architects to ensure that they have the best possible specification for their project and that is undoubtedly URSA’s glass wool insulation, our premium insulation product. “Glass mineral wool is the most efficient and user-friendly thermal and acoustic insulation material, both environmentally and from a cost-effective point of view. It is suitable for use throughout a structure, providing the most efficient insulation solution available on the market today.” Ian added: “We’ll continue to work closely with both the contractor and architect to ensure products are delivered to site in line with the construction team’s needs. This is a long-term project and vast on every scale; we will continue to partner with distributor, Encon Insulation in Maidstone, who have been instrumental in this specification.” The 110-year-old historic shopping center has been closed for two years after a prolonged decline following the opening of the famous giant Westfield London shopping center nearby in 2008. The former shopping arcade, in one of the most influential areas of the City of London, at the northern end of Queensway and about 5 minutes' walk from Kensington Gardens, has become London's most fashionable development with the commencement of the building development behind the retained and refurbished Queensway and Porchester Gardens frontages. The development includes 139 one to five-bedroom luxury flats and townhouses, with a starting price rumored to be in the region of £1.5 million, complete with spa, pool and exclusive communal workspace. 20 luxury shops and restaurants and 110 hotel rooms in the UK landing of the Six Senses luxury hotel/spa chain. The project, which involves construction and engineering firm Laing O'Rourke and famed London contractors Lyons & Annoot, is based on an architectural project designed by Norman Foster's architectural practice, Foster and Partners. Mark Guest, Regional Sales Manager for URSA UK commented: “Talking through the initial enquiry from Lyons & Annoot, the client was impressed by our quick response and ability to provide swift technical reassurance with an open approach. Being able to supply products immediately by working with the Encon network enabled URSA to cut delays associated with Covid, that were previously thought inevitable and costly”. The redevelopment will retain the essence of the building, which at its opening in 1911 was the height of luxury at the time, with a theatre and even a rooftop golf course before being listed in 1970 and converted into a shopping centre in 1989. The works will respect the iconic façade, central courtyard and dome of the old building which will be restored as well as the majestic and historic interior staircase, which will form the centerpiece of the hotel's ground floor. URSA's state-of-the-art insulation materials are being used in the refurbishment work. The contractors have already used URSA CAVITY BATT 32 glass wool slab treated with water-repellent additives and glass mineral wool for first-class thermal and acoustic insulation. With a fit-out contract of around £111 million, the 139 luxury homes will occupy a unique space of almost 28,000 square metres and are expected to be completed in 2023.  

This is the latest cycle hub designed, manufactured, supplied and installed by Falco for Fairfield General Hospital in Bury, Greater Manchester. Installed on behalf of Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation trust, the cycle hub is based on the flagship FalcoLok design and provides staff, visitors and patients to the hospital with secure cycle parking for up to 28 bikes.The FalcoLevel-Premium+ two-tier cycle racks are housed within a 6m x 4m version of the FalcoLok-500 cycle hub, complete with easy access automatic power doors, motion sensor LED lighting, helmet lockers, bespoke branding graphics and powder coating in an NHS blue RAL colour. The cycle hub is clad in toughened safety glass, designed to be sympathetic to the surrounding area.The whole shelter is a bespoke contemporary design of the classic Falco Cycle Hub shelter, which features clean lines through the glass cladding and supported by stainless steel glass clamps. The steelwork is hot dip galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461 and also meets UK structural design laws with EN 1090 accreditation. The ChallengeAs the building has listed status, any expansion would need to be carefully considered, allowing the building to become more suited to modern demands without losing its heritage.As part of this, meeting the necessary safety requirements of today’s building regulations was crucial – something which could be achieved by specifying materials appropriately.The SolutionTo ensure a product that could meet all the fire and loading requirements was specified, Pyroguard provided expert technical guidance to cater for the project’s constraints of working within a listed building, helping with the specialist design of additional fire-rated glazing to be incorporated in existing timber windows and doors.Due to the ambitious nature of the project, more than 300 square metres of Pyroguard toughened glass, including Pyroguard Firesafe T EW30/6, Pyroguard Rapide Plus EI30/EI60 and Pyroguard Protect T-EI60, was chosen for its unrivalled quality and safety features.Protecting against flames, smoke and radiant heat, the selected glazing range has the advantage of providing Marr College with additional radiant heat control and greater fire protection.In tests this glass demonstrates the ability to maintain the amount of radiant heat to below 15 kW/m2 on the unexposed face, protecting critical evacuation routes for occupants.

A comprehensive fire door replacement programme throughout the 5-storey Ladywell Unit which provides mental health services including a psychiatric intensive care unit.Advanced Timber Systems supplied fully PVC encapsulated ‘Vanta-form’ Door-sets and specialist anti-ligature hardware to give a robust, compliant and durable solution in this complex environment.Glazed Side screens were supplied with toughened security glass to enhance the safety for patients and staff without compromising visibility through corridors.

Located in South Yorkshire on the edge of the Peak district the spa enjoys beautiful rural surroundings. The spa is located in a converted farm building with views down the valley to the south and fields to the north. The spa health suite comprises an Aroma steam room, Panoramic sauna, Himalayan sauna, Herbal bath, Rasul, Feature shower and footbaths. A superb choice of thermal experiences within a relatively small space yet through clever use of glass always feeling spacious and relaxing.

Helo was commissioned to create a poolside sauna in keeping with this traditional style pool hall in a country estate in the south west. Space was limited and effort was made to reduce, as far as possible, the impact of the cabin on the surrounding décor. The client wished to enjoy a view of the existing pool area whilst bathing in the sauna. This was achieved with an angled glass door and full height glazed panel. Helo’s sophisticated Fusion heater, with steam generator, was used to allow a multi climate sauna to suit varying tastes.

The health suite is part of an extention to the Salt Ayre Leisure Centre on the outskirts of Lancaster. Helo were given a space in the development to design a health suite comprising four thermal rooms, shower and ice feature. The rooms were finished with large format tiles, decorative mosaic banding and wide glass frontage for a spacious, contemporary style with excellent heat experiences. Delivered within budget and program. The centre piece is the Water Mill Sauna with the water wheel invoking the old industries of the town.

The Grade II Listed Victorian Tamworth Assembly Rooms had secondary glazing installed by Selectaglaze as part of a multi-million-pound project to refurbish and restore the much respected theatre. A solution was required to insulate the single glazed original arched casement windows in the auditorium to provide suitable acoustic and thermal insulation. Selectaglaze’s Series 41 side hung casement secondary glazing was specified with 6.4mm glass to each of the windows, matching the sightlines and providing full access to the originals for cleaning and maintenance.

Helo completed the installation of a new sauna at the Novotel Reading as part of an ongoing improvement program to their wet leisure facilities. The new room is contemporary styled, utilising subtle underbench and underseat lighting. A wide glass door allows easy, inclusive access for all. The sauna features the Rocher heater with a large capacity of stones which provides warm, comfortable radiant heat and is excellent for infusion. The seating has two tier benching which provides the option of different temperature zones within the sauna.

Crow Wood Spa is set within the magnificent Lancashire countryside – famous for its tales of witches, sorcery and black magic in the 17th-century. Working closely with the client, Prospec’s installation of Cabrillant 700 cubicles are the centre piece of the spas changing areas, meeting their exacting high specification. The toughened and laminated glass provides an opulent feel and white opaque finish is clean and crisp. The Spa Manager added ‘how fantastic the showers look’ and that the entire team are ‘really pleased with the finish.

Located on the Isle of Dogs peninsula on the Thames in London’s East End, two residential towers of 31 and 45 floors, respectively, are among the tallest buildings in the British capital and the tallest residential buildings in Europe. The clarity of the external appearance, which transmits both its quadratic shape and the uniform facade design with reflected glass, was replicated on the interior by interior designers. Cubic elements, such as the classic Memento wash basin from Villeroy & Boch, pick up on the predominant architectural language.

The Mediacité shopping center is one of the biggest in Belgium with a surface of more than 160.000 m². The concept of the building opened to the public was realized by the famous architect-designer Ron Arad and by Jaspers-Eyers architects. The shopping mall gallery measure 450 meters long and is characterized by an impressive wave glass roof that formed interlaced steel bands. Barrisol Laqué® "Rouge grenat" revitalizes the movements of this band on all its length, as well as in the center by dressing some rhombuses.

Gareth Tuxworth is the Capital Project Manager at Hopwood Hall College. Gareth was looking for washrooms which would stand the test of time, 'everything we have installed and put together has been done to a good quality and that’s sturdy enough to withstand learners jumping all over it!’ Gareth chose Bushboard’s Aero Glass for changing and shower areas and Quadro cubicles for the redevelopment of washrooms at both campuses. Stepnell Ltd selected Orbis balustrades with glass infill to fulfil the vision of a luxury retirement living community at the £29m Brio Retirement Living project, Beechwood Park.Designed with a wide range of community facilities and communal areas, Delta supplied over 600m of balustrades for the balconies and stairs.The project has since been awarded the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) “Very Good” standard rating and BRE HQM (Home Quality Mark) Level 3.

Designed by Danish architects Schmidt Hammer Lassen and opened in 1999, the Black Diamond is an extension to the Royal Library in Copenhagen that doubles its size. Its exterior of two glossy black cubes slightly tilted over its harbour-front walkway, reflect the sky above and the sea before it.This glass-and-black-marble structure, which changed the face of the city’s harbour, features a stunning eight-story atrium, whose undulating walls and balconies echo the ebb and flow of the harbour’s waterway.

Neaco supplied a bespoke specification combining a railed Juliet balcony design with its contemporary glass balustrade to meet the aesthetic requirements of The Pembroke, a prestigious development of luxury apartments in Sevenoaks, Kent. Designed by BHD Architects, the project formed part of an extensive redevelopment of a site at the junction with London Road and Pembroke Road, and included the construction of a new apartment complex comprising 22 properties with parking at basement level. The scheme was designed to fit into the established pattern of development of the surrounding area, in terms of scale and appearance.

Majunga Tower is a reinvention of an office block. The facades are articulated thanks to 3 bands, over 39 storeys reaching 195 meters high. This singular building has a double-skin envelop. It is made out of glass and aluminum, to allow natural light into the offices while keeping the views and a visual connection to its context. Our motorized BSO with C50 blades are integrated into this facade for complete adaptability of light and shades throughout the day. This efficient system cut lighting and air-conditioning energy consumption.

The project Le Thémis is a display of sustainability . The north façade is made out of glass to attract natural light and create reflections . Thanks to our Premium Plus Roller Shades with Polyscreen ® 550 , thermal and visual comfort is achieved . The fabric guarantees an excellent thermal protection , managing up 94 % of solar heat, while being a highly efficient sunlight filter .The entire building received several recognitions in terms of energetic efficiency such as HQE, Breeam , Effinergie + Biosourcé .

Good acoustics, like high quality thermal insulation, is one of the most important considerations for house builders and architects. This is because of high density living and, in particular, the popularity of sold floors. For example, one of the latest trends are concrete floors. The problem is further exacerbated by the desire for large areas of glass and the absence of soft furnishings, such as curtains and carpets. The result of all this is that absorption of sound is difficult creating an unpleasant environment. One solution is to line the ceilings with cost effective and high performance Troldtekt acoustic panels.

The ChallengeAs part of this strategy, the decision was taken to replace a fully-glazed non-fire-rated internal atrium with a new, high-performance fire-rated solution to ensure the highest levels of fire protection.Spanning five storeys, the atrium would create a functional yet architecturally stunning light-filled centrepiece within the modern office space.Forming part of the broader regeneration of Dublin Landings, bringing this aspect of the project in on time would be critical.As a result, Walls to Workstations were tasked with removing and replacing the five-floor atrium in just six weeks to see the project through to completion.The SolutionWorking closely with W2W, Pyroguard supplied more than 500 square metres of toughened EI30 fire safety glass to the project. As a high end jewellery store, both security and a clean and sleek look, were priorities for the entrance.Solution:FAAC Entrance Solutions installed the SL500 Transparent sliding door four panel system and finished the operator cover in a 50% gloss Light Bronze RAL Finish. The pocket screens were replaced by flush mounted EN16005 compliant safety presence detecting sensors which together with the 10.8mm glass and a dotted manifestation, contributed to an elegant yet safe entrance. A movable acoustic wall with radiation protection for a research and testing environment needing to maximise flexibility while still offering the safety and protection required in a radiology environment.Our Type 100SE semi-electrically operated movable wall was developed and tailor-made for this requirement; with X-Ray protection and specialised seals to ensure the ground-breaking radiation protection and acoustic levels would be achieved. Each wall weighed in the region of circa 6 tons and the top hung system was fitted with our Type “K“ track which allows for remote and varied stacking locations. The walls varied in width and height but were all finished in Rigato Formica laminate with aluminium protective edge trims. The vision panels in the pass doors were fitted with Med-X type single glazed glass between two layers of 4mm thick toughened glass.

ChallengeThe project, at Winston Court in North Walsham, is organised by Benjamin’s Building Company, part of The Benjamin Foundation. Benjamin’s Building Company is a social enterprise that works to create homes, training and employment opportunities for vulnerable people. The ambitious venture will see the development of four, self-contained accommodation units. Seeking help in this task, The Benjamin Foundation turned to CRASH for assistance in locating suppliers and materials.SolutionKnauf Insulation donated 24 rolls of 150mm Loft Roll insulation, 48 rolls of 140mm Rafter Roll 40 and 72 rolls of 110mm FrameTherm® 32 for the project. A movable acoustic wall with radiation protection for a research and testing environment needing to maximise flexibility while still offering the safety and protection required in a radiology environment.Our Type 100SE semi-electrically operated movable wall was developed and tailor-made for this requirement; with X-Ray protection and specialised seals to ensure the ground-breaking radiation protection and acoustic levels would be achieved. Each wall weighed in the region of circa 6 tons and the top hung system was fitted with our Type “K“ track which allows for remote and varied stacking locations. The walls varied in width and height but were all finished in Rigato Formica laminate with aluminium protective edge trims. The vision panels in the pass doors were fitted with Med-X type single glazed glass between two layers of 4mm thick toughened glass.

Neaco has supplied an extensive balustrade specification for a landmark development as part of East Riding College’s new Beverley Campus and Environmental Technologies Centre. Architects Jefferson Sheard worked alongside the College and stakeholders in the development of a concept for a modern facility which acts as the face of the institution and concentrates on the Beverley Minster as an inspirational focal point, sense of place and historic context for students and staff. Neaco’s balustrade with glass infills is featured within an impressive atrium space and multi-functional hub presenting a large, welcoming and open space to visitors.

Invited to design a steam room for a traditional country farmhouse, with clean, modern convenience, Helo joined with specialist local building contractor, Leon Developments, to create a luxurious, practical Turkish bath for all the family to enjoy. Using subtle contours throughout to create a relaxing environment and ensure natural dispersal of condensation, the room was given a very open and airy feeling with the use of an extra wide safety glass door. This provides a view of the beautifully designed country bathroom from the comfort of full width mosaic tiled benches.

In 2015 the health suite at the Pendle Wavelengths Leisure Centre was destroyed by fire leaving just a shell. Helo re-designed the space with the original experiences to comply with the like for like insurance requirements but were also able to make huge improvements in the aesthetics of the rooms and space. We used wide glass fronts to the thermal rooms and showers. This created a spacious feel and expressed the finishes within each room. The open feeling allows bathers to gauge occupancy levels at a glance and therefore feel comfortable in their choice of thermal experience.

The Research and Translation Hub at Imperial College, London forms the centrepiece for the innovation district in White City. The completed design for the central atrium wholly pushed the boundaries of performance glazing. Planet AG worked with PLP Architecture to ensure the project stayed commercially viable whilst maintaining the desired impressive design. Curved glass, which reached up to 3.4 metres tall on floors 2-6 and a staggering 5 metres tall on the ground floor had to be heat soaked toughened and was up to 25.5mm thick to support the weight.

The brief for the Aquatics Centre in Aberdeen, Scotland – a joint venture between the University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen City Council and sportscotland – was extremely demanding. Sustainability was put at the forefront of the design. The specification included the awardwinning Cabrillant shower cubicles, plus the versatile, durable Marathon range of Conform cubicles and Wet lockers. The locker doors are manufactured from toughened and laminated glass, which allowed the architect to incorporate quality normally associated with high-end health clubs without compromising safety of use within this heavy traffic public facility.
