Outdoor Lockers at Wren Community Hub, Enfield

Outdoor Lockers at Wren Community Hub, Enfield

Helmsman

Helmsman’s latest project was an exciting one for the team. We were contacted by Bowmer & Kirkland who we have worked with many times in the past, to create a bespoke set of outdoor lockers for a project in Enfield.Bowmer & Kirkland are the lead contractor for The Chase Farm Development, which when complete, will be home to two new schools, One Degree Academy and Wren Academy, with a Community Hub and Sports Centre, plus 362 New Homes. With a range of outdoor space, the client had requested lockers to be installed along two external walls of the building. Whilst our Wet Spec Laminate Lockers are great for humid and wet environments such as leisure centre changing rooms, it was important that we considered the different impact that outdoor lockers would need to withstand. We designed, manufactured, and installed 158 bespoke, 4 compartment outdoor lockers at Wren Community Hub. The body was made with Stainless Steel, with doors and end panels in Solid Grade Laminate. A selection of colours were used, with Formica Laminate in Peaceful Blue, Lime and Dusty Jade for the doors, and Polar White for the end panels. The client also requested Sloping Tops for the lockers. These are a great addition to stop clutter and other objects being placed on top of the lockers, particularly helpful for lockers in public spaces as this project is. The sloping tops were made from stainless steel with Solid Grade Laminate over the top in Polar White to match the end panels. For the locks and numbering, the client chose oval laminated number plates with Lowe and Fletcher Camlocks, which make a great pairing. It was great to work on this bespoke locker project and highlights that Helmsman can help with a variety of requests and requirements for locker projects. Top Grades To GEC Anderson In Cookery School Kitchen

Anderson, GEC Ltd

GEC Anderson stainless steel worktops were included in a recent Cornwall kitchen refurbishment, designed and installed by George Robinson Kitchens who produce hand crafted, bespoke kitchens, near Penzance. For homeowners, Mr. & Mrs. Bull, the choice of materials was pivotal to the design of their home kitchen, particularly, as their long-term plan is to use the space as a cookery school. Stainless steel was therefore a key element and was chosen not only for its visual properties and low lifetime cost but also for its ability to withstand heavy usage, to be heat resistant and to remain germ-free. From a visual perspective, the work surfaces make up a significant proportion of the colour and texture in the room. In this Georgian property in Cornwall, the materials and textures chosen make for an eclectic yet functional space. The inherent durability and unsurpassed hygienic properties of the brushed stainless steel elements from GEC Anderson will make it perform extremely well as a professional kitchen. The Tulip wood and Oak wood with its different painted finishes together with the white Silestone quartz top on the central island top provides a striking contrast to the stainless steel in one corner, giving a light and pleasant, contemporary, feel. The L-shaped brushed satin stainless steel worktop and integral sink is made to measure and benefits from being manufactured in one continuous piece thus maximising the use of space in the corner in which it is situated. Furthermore, with no joins at the sink bowl, edges and upstands, the surface remains germ free as well as being free of visual clutter and noise. One side of the L-shape includes a generously sized (500x400mm) single bowl and draining area, whilst the other, provides useful and practical work surface. A 100mm high, integral, back upstand was also specified, providing a neat, practical and watertight junction to walls.Owner Dr Matt Bull says, “My wife and I liked the toughness of the stainless steel and the fact that it can take hot and cold, doesn't stain, reflects light and provides an hygienic surface that is easy to clean. Stainless steel also gains character as it ages, where many surfaces will deteriorate, so that’s a real bonus.” He added, “We struggled to find anyone locally who could manufacture the stainless steel elements of the kitchen to a sufficiently high standard. The neatness of the welding and the configuration of the shape, drainer recess etc. were key to what GEC Anderson could offer.”GEC Anderson stainless steel worktops are supplied fully sound deadened, plastic protected

Helios HSK Hospital

Helios HSK Hospital

Villeroy & Boch - Tiles Division

One of the most modern hospitals in Germany has been in operation since the beginning of 2024: the new Helios HSK in Wiesbaden. Around 120,000 outpatients and 45,000 inpatients are treated here every year in 28 specialist clinics and institutes, with more than 2,400 employees working for the hospital. With an investment sum of 268 million euros, a new building complex with a longitudinal axis of 200 m and a depth of 100 m was erected directly next to the existing Helios Dr. Horst Schmidt Clinics, which can accommodate all the functions of a maximum care provider in high-performance medicine. The architecture and comb structure of the new building are aligned with the treatment processes and follow the principle of short distances: the departments are arranged in such a way that synergies are created and interdisciplinary cooperation is facilitated. The foyer, cafeteria, corridors and staircases of the building were designed to be functional and aesthetically pleasing at the same time using selected series of Villeroy & Boch tiles. The vilbostone ABERDEEN porcelain stoneware series create a purist atmosphere with a subtle natural touch in the open foyer, which is flooded with light thanks to large glass surfaces and furnished with light-colored wood, in the corridors and stairwells. Inspired by the silver-grey granite from the former quarries around the harbor town of the same name in north-east Scotland, the design of the tiles adapts the typical inclusions and gloss effects of the grey Aberdeen stones in high-quality ceramics. In the floor design, the 30 x 60 cm and 15 x 60 cm formats in the expressive, matt slate grey color are combined in a bond, creating an interesting, lively look in the surfaces. The floor covering is extremely robust and easy to clean and offers a high level of slip resistance with slip resistance R10/A. The stairwells are designed with special 30 x 120 cm stair tiles, the edges of which have contrasting colored edges and milled grooves for better visibility. In addition, in particularly sensitive areas such as the kitchen, tiles with slip resistance R12-V4 were laid, which, thanks to their special surface structure, enable safe standing and walking even with large amounts of liquids or grease. The ABERDEEN wall tile in light white pearl in 30 x 60 cm format was also laid in various sanitary areas. A lustre print finish creates interesting matt-gloss effects on the glazed stoneware tiles, which subtly imitate the character of granite and can be perceived to varying degrees depending on the incidence of light and point of view.In the cafeteria, whose interior design with the theme of “water” is reminiscent of Wiesbaden’s tradition as a spa town, floor areas with tiles from the historically inspired design concept CENTURY UNLIMITED catch the eye. The high-quality vilbostone porcelain stoneware combines a fine cotto cement look with decorations inspired by the Mettlach tiles from the 19th century. Attractive tile carpets have been created with decorative tiles in a successful contrast to the ABERDEEN surface in a consistent color: As a border, the cotto-colored Diamonds decor with classic diamonds creates a three-dimensional trompe l’œil effect. The main surface of the “carpet” is composed of the Circles decor, which uses ornaments in various coordinated shades of grey and beige as well as the expressive colors cotto and indigo to place the traditional patterns in a highly aesthetic, contemporary context.

There was a leak to the external staircase and the balcony downspout, which caused staining and what appeared to be salt efflorescence; this area required attention prior to decoration. KEIM Royalan was specified on the sea-facing elevation to protection the property from harsh weather conditions and give a long lasting, colour-fast and decorative matt finish. Our flush lever door handle has been designed to comply with the DDA regulations. Due to the high level of foot traffic within these areas the MG200 system was ideal as each panel edge being protected with a satin anodised aluminum profile. Manufactured panels have a different level of acoustic reduction, but all of them provide the kind of flexibility needed to work perfectly within any office or commercial environment following a professional installation from ModernGlide. Because there is no need for a structural head support, this makes the MG200 series perfect for smaller openings. We then advised that any existing fungal growth must be thoroughly removed using wire brushes to remove all growths and then all areas were to be treated with KEIM Algicid. Onto the cement based, roughcast surfaces, a three coat KEIM Royalan system was used to provide a colourfast, longlife, breathable, protective and decorative mineral matt finish.

Property in Cornwall

Keim Mineral Paints Ltd

This property in a picturesque town in Cornwall, was in need of some TLC. The exterior walls are exposed to the seaside climes, making it perfect as the first project in the UK to use KEIM Twinstar, 2in1 masonry exterior paint.Prior to re-decoration, it was recommended that the painted stone gable walls were stripped back to enable the property to breathe, which reduces the paint from blistering and flaking due to moisture being trapped within the substate. KEIM Twinstar, in colour 9354, was applied by KEIM lover, Ry Spencely of Airborn Painting & Decorating.  KEIM Twinstar is the latest exterior and masonry paint solution, designed to ‘buy you time’ with its 2in1 system where paint is applied wet on wet. There’s no drying time between coats, which reduces waiting, labour and time. It allows a two-coat paint in one work step.Simply mix and apply the paint undiluted, straight from the bucket to ‘saturate’ the surface, then apply more of the same paint working into the existing wet paint layer. The decorator commented, “Another top quality product from KEIM. Application was very nice, it’s a thick chunky product as you’d expect and it covered a dream. The finished look was that signature luxurious KEIM super matt finish, all the while it’s letting the building breathe. Winner!”Ry Spencely of Airborn Painting & DecoratingKEIM Twinstar is the latest product development, designed specifically to speed up application and project time, whilst offering the full suite of sustainability credentials associated with KEIM.

Architects: IDOMLocation: Donostia, SpainPhotography: Iñaki BergeraMaterial: NATURSIDING-WFinish: RustikThe Aldapeta María Ikastetxea School is the interpretation of modernity, sustainability, and innovation poured into architecture. With the original building demolished, which dated back to the 19th Century, the new school building accompanies the view of education into the future, leveraging new technologies.Efficiency has been key to this project through the use of geothermal energy and natural light used as a shaping tool of space. Our durable rain-screen system wood panels embrace the refinement and warmth typically of wood into the structure in juxtaposition with other materials such as concrete and metal resembling Japanese architecture, with its pure lines, rhythm, dynamism, and sobriety. To accentuate the rhythm and promote harmony between concrete and wood, we have opted for the vertical placement of the slats that evokes the patterns of the wood framework. Achieving such effect is possible given the aesthetics enhanced by the small piece that attains a harmonious relationship between wood and concrete. With an innovative setup in the architectural sphere composed of a hidden system with no visible screws or rivets, the slatted cladding can be placed vertically even in large buildings, and in an easy way that provides a sense of strength and uniformity to the whole. The PARKLEX PRODEMA panels new setup system allows achieving distinctive finishes with the warmth of the wood, longevity, durability, and limited to no maintenance requirements.

DENMARK’S OFFICE OF THE YEAR

Troldtekt A/S

Troldtekt’s acoustic wood wool panels have helped interior design company Ambiente to win Nohrcon’s annual Danish ‘Office Building of the Year Award’ with its own office in Skanderborg, Denmark.  Created in collaboration with architect Ardess, the new 11,500sqm headquarters for this well-known interior design and exhibition stand company has unique features set within a raw and rustic environment and behind a minimalistic black steel façade. The centrepiece of the office is a 1,000sqm open external atrium which is overlooked by every department to develop a sense of bonding and equality between the tradespeople in production to the designers and sales team at their desks.  “The goal was to create something unique where high ceilings and spaciousness within a raw concrete frame would be a source of inspiration for both employees and clients,” says Ambiente owner and creative director Michael Skjodt. Consequently, the decor and spaces are designed to release creative ideas and build them up together with the customer.  The result is raw concrete floors and walls with 6.5m high ceilings contrasting against 18 staggered White City cubes, as they are called. These bright white rooms are used to stimulate creativity from meetings, exhibitions, showrooms and offices.  Black painted Troldtekt acoustic ceiling panels which have a natural rugged and uncomplicated appearance are used throughout the open areas and, when combined with long and heavy curtains, give the space an intimate and quiet atmosphere. These are complemented by white painted acoustic panels lining the ceilings and overhangs of the Cubes to maximise their brightness.  Specified throughout the UK and Europe, the benefits of 100% Troldtekt natural wood wool panels include high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability. The decking was laid three years ago and treated with a decking stain (not Owatrol!) but it started to turn grey very quickly. These pictures were taken over the course of a few days. The process was simple to follow and we’re very pleased with the results.Products usedPrepdeckPrepdeck is a water-based, high-grade stripper/cleaner specially designed for the removal of old, solid and semi-transparent stains, unsightly grade stamps and other types of finishes from wood.It is a three-in-one product: Its main purpose, when used undiluted, is an effective way to prepare wooden surfaces for further treatment. When used diluted, Prepdeck can reduce the mill glaze on new wood to prepare the surface to accept a saturating finish.Net-TrolNet-Trol is a powerful wood cleaner and brightener which restores greyed and weathered wood back to its natural colour. It easily removes surface and ground-in dirt to leave the wood looking fresh and new again. All without damaging the wood’s fibres.Net-Trol is fast-acting and can restore the colour of your wood in as little as 15 minutes. All without sanding! It is also is biodegradable and does not contain solvents or bleach, making it safe to use in multiple environments.TextrolTextrol is a highly saturating oil for exterior soft and hardwood. It works by saturating the wood to protect it from within, meaning there’s no film on the surface and so it will not peel or flake.Textrol is available in 7 shades, including clear, and enhances the natural beauty of the wood whilst providing a mildew-resistant finish. This offers exceptional and long-lasting protection from the effects of moisture, weathering and UV rays.Thank you so much for sending us over these pictures of your renovated hardwood decking, Paul!
