Description

Substructure system using MetalPad Ex pedestals that has been designed to adhere to fire safety rules while also creating a high-performance platform for paving and decking projects.


All components have been specifically designed to integrate into the system. The aluminium rails/ joists fit to the fire-rated MetalPad Ex adjustable pedestal via wing nut fixings. The system is highly versatile, and the substructure can be built to as low as 41 mm. Using rail-to-rail headpieces will enable a framework of multiple support beams to be built to very large height thresholds, whilst still maintaining durability and stability.

  • Very large height thresholds achievable, using rail to rail headpiece.
  • Pave up to walls and parapets with the metal edge plate which provides drainage gap between the wall and perimeter tiles/ slabs.
  • Helps deal with difficult to work with subfloors that are undulating or have features such as vents, plinths or drains.

The lengths referred to here are for the aluminium Box Rail and I-Plus Joists/Rails. The pedestals are the Class A rated MetalPad Ex range of adjustable pedestals covering heights from 25mm to 300mm.

The Width of all Wallbarn Aluminium Joists/ Rails are 60mm. These are secured to the pedestal using the Wallbarn Wing Nut Kit which allows you to hand tighten them without the need for specialist tools.

Self-levelling headpiece.

Guidance for specification option:

  • Special Self-Levelling / slope corrector headpieces are available for MetalPad EX range which connects securely onto the headpiece and gives a slope correction up to 5° in all directions.
  • The lugged headpiece holds the tiles / slabs securely in place and finds its own natural position to create a flat upper surface.
  • If the headpiece is inverted the lugs can wrap around a number of the aluminium rails available from Wallbarn.
  • There are no non-metallic elements on this Slope Corrector so it complies with a Class A1 fire rating.

Paving headpiece.

Guidance for specification option:

  • Paving Headpieces fit directly on to the MetalPad Ex Pedestal, our Metal Fixed Height Pads and all Wallbarn aluminium Rails, without the need for mechanical fixing.
  • The lugged headpiece holds the tiles / slabs securely whilst also providing a gap for drainage between each of the tiles or paving slabs.
  • The headpiece is made of galvanised steel and coated in Zintec 200 to prevent corrosion.
  • These Headpieces meet Class A fire rating.
  • They are available with different lug positions that make positioning tiles easier for any layout such as brickwork or stretcher bond.


Crucifix headpiece.

Guidance for specification option:

  • Crucifix Headpieces fit directly on to the MetalPad Ex Pedestal without the need for mechanical fixing.
  • The lugged headpiece holds the tiles / slabs securely whilst also providing a gap for drainage between each of the tiles or paving slabs.
  • The Crucifix is made from High Grade Aluminium 6063 T6 to BS EN 755-9.
  • These Headpieces meet Class A fire rating.
  • Provides a simple and cost effective option when using the MetalPad Ex for paving.

Rail headpiece.

Guidance for specification option:

  • The Rail Headpiece fits on to the MetalPad Ex Pedestal and secured by a central screw.
  • The headpiece holds all Wallbarn aluminium rails/joists to produce a total Class A Substructure.
  • Made from High Grade Aluminium 6063 T6 to BS EN 755-9
  • It is ideal to be used when an existing steel structure is in place. These headpieces can be used to house and fit Wallbarn’s aluminium rails to form a substructure for decking or paving. This is a common circumstance on high rise balcony refurbishments.
  • The Headpiece meets Class A fire rating.

Rail to rail headpiece.

Guidance for specification option:

  • The Rail to Rail Headpiece is designed to allow our aluminium joists to be stacked perpendicularly, creating a robust substructure system.
  • The Headpiece is particularly useful for complex sub-floors with significant variations in finished floor levels.
  • Made from High Grade Aluminium 6063 T6 to BS EN 755-9
  • The headpiece works with all Wallbarn aluminium rails/joists.
  • The Headpiece meet Class A fire rating ensuring compliance with the latest fire regulations.
