Application

For horizontal, vertical and soffit applications. Suitable for new build or refurbishment projects.

Description

VariAL-TF offers a functional and robust solution for flat panel rainscreen cladding applications, which is simple and cost effective to design, detail and install. Fixed by a colour matched rivet through the face of the panel to allow minimal disruption of aesthetics, designers can achieve the effect of a smooth facade by specifying minimal shadow gaps when compared with cassette systems.

Features and benefits:

  • Cost-effective flat panel cladding.
  • Minimal joint widths.
  • Fully mechanically fixed panels.
  • Versatile panel arrangement.
  • CWCT Tested
  • BBA Certification (in progress)
  • Fire classification to EN13501-1 - A1 and A2,s1-d0 options

Specification data - Drained and back-ventilated rainscreen cladding systems

System performance

Fire performance: Reaction to fire to EN 13501-1, Euroclass A1.

Guidance for specification option:

Aluminium, stainless steel or corten with no coating or anodized coating.

Fire performance: Reaction to fire to EN 13501-1, Euroclass A2-s1, d0.

Guidance for specification option:

2–3 mm Aluminium with PPC coating or with 4 mm Alucobond A2 ACM.

Manufacturer guidance

For fire testing:

• Mineral wool insulation (<340mm thickness) with classification A1 to BS EN 13501-1 was applied on this system.

• The cavity for the system was 25–100 mm.

Thermal insulation

-

Manufacturer guidance

Insulation, if used, should be mineral wool of classification A1, thickness 50–340 mm. Refer to the Warringtonfire classification report for further details.

Breather membrane

-

Material

-

Manufacturer guidance

The system does not include a breather membrane or vapour barrier since these components are not Class A1. If a vapour barrier is required, refer to the guidance in Approved Document B regarding the required fire classification.

Secondary support structure

AX1 AxiAL carrier system.

Guidance for specification option:

Aluminium support system. From 45 mm to 395 mm.

AX2 AxiAL carrier system.

Guidance for specification option:

Aluminium support system. From 45 mm to 425 mm.

AX3 AxiAL carrier system.

Guidance for specification option:

Aluminium support system. From 53 mm to 225 mm.

AX4 AxiAL carrier system.

Guidance for specification option:

AX1R AxiAL carrier system.

Guidance for specification option:

Stainless steel support system. From 52 mm to 335 mm.

AX2R AxiAL carrier system.

Guidance for specification option:

Stainless steel support system. From 52 mm to 333 mm.

AX3R AxiAL carrier system.

Guidance for specification option:

Stainless steel support system. From 50 to 225 mm.

AX4R AxiAL carrier system.

Guidance for specification option:

Stainless steel support system. From 25 mm to 40 mm. System with no adjustment range in the cladding zone.

Manufacturer guidance

The brackets can be also installed on A&L standard top hats which can extend the cladding zone 50 mm further.

Cavity fire barriers

-

Horizontal

-

Manufacturer guidance

Fire cavity barriers are not included within the system and should be specified and designed by a qualified engineer.

Vertical

-

Manufacturer guidance

Fire cavity barriers are not included within the system and should be specified and designed by a qualified engineer.

Cladding panels

3 mm Perforated Aluminium.

Guidance for specification option:

Maximum panel size: 5970 x 1970 mm (H x W).

2 mm Cor-Ten Steel.

Guidance for specification option:

Maximum panel size: 3970 x 1970 mm (H x W).

3 mm Cor-Ten Steel.

Guidance for specification option:

Maximum panel size: 3970 x 1970 mm (H x W).

Panel joints

Vertical closed joint, horizontal open joint.

Guidance for specification option:

A minimum of 50 mm ventilated air cavity is recommended by the manufacturer for an open joint system to prevent water crossing the air gap to the insulation. Passage of water through these joints is reduced by pressure-equalising the cavity behind the joint.

  • Vertical joints are closed by the vertical substructure, this may be matched with the same colour of panel finishing (PPC).
  • Horizontal open joint - the joint is open to the cavity.

Closed joints.

Guidance for specification option:

For closed joint construction, the facade system has to be drained and ventilated and the minimum air gap required is 25 mm.

  • Vertical joints are closed by the vertical substructure, this may be matched with the same colour of panel finishing (PPC).
  • Horizontal closed joint - joint can be closed with flat metal profile, this can be colour matched with panel finishing.

Manufacturer guidance

Joint details are available in varying widths to suit requirements and can be matching or contrasting colours. Minimum joint size will be dependent on panel length allowing for expansion/ contraction.

Joint width: 20 mm (standard), 25 mm (maximum), 10 mm (minimum).

Consult manufacturer and insert requirements.

Panel fixings

Large flange rivet – corrosion resistant, PPC finish.

Guidance for specification option:

For aluminium and ACM cladding. Inset RAL or colour code.

Large flange rivet – corrosion resistant, PPC with anodic effect.

Guidance for specification option:

For aluminium and ACM cladding. Inset RAL or colour code.

Full stainless steel rivet, PPC finish.

Guidance for specification option:

For corten steel cladding.

Full stainless steel rivet, PPC with anodic effect.

Manufacturer guidance

Rivets can be matched with panel finishing so they are hardly noticeable from a distance or they can be in contrast colour to be part of the facade design pattern.
