Application

Suitable for biodiverse green roof (flat roofs only).

Description

BauderSOLAR G LIGHT integrated solar PV mounting system for Biodiverse Green Roof, for flat roofs only. An integrated mounting solution for photovoltaic renewable energy within a green roof, where the substrate and vegetation provide the ballasted installation mechanism, which removes the need for penetrating the waterproofing to secure the mounting units to the roof.

A key element of the BauderSOLAR G LIGHT system is that the front edge of the PV panel is set at around 300 mm above the level of the substrate, which allows liberal growing space for the biodiverse vegetation without blocking light to the polycrystalline solar cells that would otherwise reduce the efficiency of the panels. This height setting also enables light and moisture to reach beneath the panel to support the plants below.

Features and benefits:

  • Allows entire roof to qualify as a biodiverse green roof.
  • No roof penetrations for the panels as the green roof substrate acts as ballast.
  • Front edge of the panel is set at around 300 mm above the substrate.
  • Green roof can reduce the temperature of the PV panel.
  • System can be retrofitted on many roofs.
  • Installation possible on level decks.
  • Shaded and sheltered areas attract a broad range of beneficial wildlife.
  • Waterproofing guarantee remains uncompromised.
  • Raised modules allow light and moisture to access vegetation.
  • The green roof has a cooling effect on the roof, which can increase panel output by up to 5%.
  • Allows for energy generation in areas where it was not previously possible.

  • Maximum Weight (saturated): ≤1200 kg/m³.
  • Typical supply weight: c. 950 kg/m³.
  • Water storage (by volume): 35%.
  • pH value: 6–8.5.
  • Bulk bag size: 1.25 m³.
  • Small bag size: 25 L.

Applied directly into the profile cups of the Bauder SOLAR Anchor Boards.

Installed above the BauderGREEN FV 125 filter fleece in Bauder DSE40 Drainage and Protection Layer areas.

Substrates are raked out to give an even coverage of the required depth after settlement.

Handle in the driest condition possible. Do not handle or install when wet or frozen.

Start by applying two equal layers, building up to the required maximum depth.

Gently firm each layer before spreading the next. Allowance should be made for any settlement that may occur. It is recommended that ‘measuring stick’ markers of the required depth be used around the roof area to ensure that a minimum acceptable thickness of growing medium is achieved.

Depending on size and access of the project the ‘substrate’ can be supplied by various methods i.e. tipper, Big bags, or sacks. Prior to costing this element of the installation, the ‘Bauder Approved Contractor’ must contact Bauder Ltd so that they may advise on the best solution on any specific contract.

Important note regarding alternative substrates:

Alternative substrates are not recommended for Bauder supplied planting.

Vegetation barrier

Not required.

20/ 40 mm round river washed pebbles.

Guidance for specification option:

Recommended, supplied by others.

A vegetation barrier must be provided to all perimeters, abutments penetrations including protrusions i.e. man-safe posts etc. Recommend 20/ 40 mm rounded river washed pebbles.

Stones/ aggregates with sharp edges must not be used i.e. flint.

In accordance with current GRO guidelines, the specified barrier widths are as follows:

  • Minimum 300 mm but increasing to 500 mm at vertical walls with opening windows or doors or to abutments with opening rooflights.
  • Every 40 m, there is a 30 mm high barrier constructed of non-flammable materials or a one metre wide strip of solid paving, gravel or pebbles.
  • At all open drainage perimeters, drainage trim must be used to contain the vegetation barrier.
  • Vegetation barrier removal or reduction of the recommended width: Pebble vegetation barriers function as a fire break between potentially flammable dry vegetation and abutting construction materials that are also potentially flammable, to prevent fire spreading. These can be seen as an aesthetic issue for smaller green/ blue roof areas and for this reason some clients/ designers choose to reduce this width or otherwise remove the barrier altogether.

The current barrier guidelines are set by the GRO codes of practice that Bauder follows and promotes. These are guidelines and not currently a legal requirement under British Standards or Building Regulations. However, not following these guidelines may affect an insurance claim in the unlikely event of a fire. Consequently, Bauder Ltd cannot accept liability for issues arising from non-compliance with the current GRO guidelines.

  • RHS Perfect for pollinators: 35 plant species.
  • Laval Food: 12 plant species.

NOTE:

All seed mixes are subject to seasonal seed availability.

Installation details:

The Bauder Flora Seed Mixes are specifically designed for sowing at roof level, they contain tackifier and fertilizer with the seed to ensure the seed is stuck to the substrate and not blown or washed off the roof, this ensures the highest germination rates.

The ideal time for seeding is in the spring and autumn. Please note that increased post installation aftercare will be required for installations that take place during the summer and winter months. Please note that the best time to plant seeds is springtime (late March-April.) or early autumn (Sept/ Oct).

Avoid sowing in strong winds. The substrate is to be watered immediately prior to application of the seed mix. Sow approximately 50% of the mix longitudinally down the roof, and then over-sow at 90° with the remainder of the mix. DO NOT RAKE THE SEED MIX INTO THE SUBSTRATE SURFACE.

The seed mix needs light to germinate.

Establishment Watering Requirements:

The substrate will have been watered prior to application of the seed mix. Please note that the seed mix should only then be lightly watered in during the summer or where activation of the adhesive element is required in exposed locations. Please avoid over-watering to prevent seed washout. Once the seeds have germinated, it is essential that the growing medium is kept moist for a further 10 week period until planting is established. It is the responsibility of the roofing contractor to liaise with the main contractor/ building owner to provide water and ensure that the necessary watering programme (as indicated above) is instigated following installation.

An adequate mains water supply of sufficient pressure must be available and operational prior to the plants being delivered and installed. Initial watering must be by surface mounted sprinklers. Refer to the Bauder Watering Guide document for further information on watering. Bauder Ltd accepts no responsibility whatsoever for the condition of installed planting that is not properly watered or irrigated following landscaping works.

BauderGREEN SB Sedum Blanket System & BauderGREEN Flora 3 Seed Mix, BioSOLAR and shade tolerant mix combination.

Guidance for specification option:

BauderGREEN SB Substrate Sedum Blanket System is a mature vegetation blanket, sown with a broad variety of Sedum. It is intended for application directly over levelled Bauder FLL compliant, BauderGREEN SUB-EM UK Extensive Substrate (see Product Data Sheet) as the underlying growing medium. The product is designed to enable rapid rooting to the substrate to speed up establishment times.

The SB Substrate Sedum Blanket is grown in the UK. Typically, it is not supplied until it is at least one year old, this ensures the root structure has developed, enabling it to cope with harvesting, transportation and relaying which can stress young sedum plants. The vegetation within this product is a broad mix of hardy sedum species.

  • Maximum Saturate Weight: ≤24kg/m².
  • Thickness: 30–40 mm.
  • Typical Supply Size: 1 x 2.4 m.
  • Long Roll Sizes (for use with crane attachment): 1 x 5–10 m.
  • pH Value: 6.5–7.
  • Sedum Species: circa 14–17 (The species mix is adjusted from time to time, contact Bauder Technical for further information).

Lay immediately on delivery.

Growing medium condition: Immediately prior to planting, the whole system should be thoroughly watered to ensure that the water storage/ drainage board is filled and the substrate growing medium saturated.

Blankets should be laid diagonally or perpendicular to the slope of the roof. Stagger joints, butt together or slightly overlap to prevent gaps. Blankets are not to be stretched. Thoroughly water using surface sprinklers immediately after installation and substrate dressing, ensuring that the blankets and substrate are fully saturated before moving on to the next area.

BauderGREEN SB Substrate Sedum Blanket System should only be layed by skilled operatives. Care should be taken not to traffic the sedum during or after installation. See Bauder’s Green Roof Installation Guide for full details.

Establishment Watering Requirements:

BauderGREEN SB Substrate Sedum Blanket System requires surface watering for the first 4 weeks following installation (to ensure the substrate remains moist). It is the responsibility of the roofing contractor to liaise with the main contractor/ building owner to provide water and ensure that the planted and fertilized growing medium is thoroughly irrigated immediately after installation.

An adequate mains water supply, of sufficient pressure, must be available and operational prior to the plants being delivered and installed. Initial watering must be by surface mounted sprinklers. See the Bauder Watering Guide document for detailed information on watering requirements. Bauder Ltd accepts no responsibility whatsoever for the condition of installed planting that is not properly watered or irrigated following landscaping works.

BauderGREEN Flora 3 Seed Mix, BioSOLAR and shade tolerant mix to areas underneath the PV panels, please follow guidance notes for Bauder Flora 3 Seed Mix.

Note:

Other vegetation options are not advisable directly under or around the BauderSOLAR G LIGHT system.

Fertilizer

BauderGREEN DU UK organic slow release fertiliser.

Guidance for specification option:

Bauder Sedum Blankets are grown in a shallow growing medium which contains very little nutrient, so the annual application of fertilizer is crucial to ensure that the plants remain healthy. Fertilizer should ideally be applied during March/ April, as it helps the plants to prepare for extreme weather conditions and flowering whilst also allowing the different species to gain sufficient nutrients without competing against each other.

Organic fertilizer can be obtained direct from Bauder in 25 kg bags, which is sufficient for an area of 312.5 m² when applied at the recommended rate of 80 g/m². Areas of up to 30 m² may be applied using either a handheld spreader or strewn by hand from a bucket. Larger roofs should always be done using a trolley applicator, which can be purchased direct from Bauder. Always apply the fertilizer at the given rate written on the bag.

It is recommended that the fertilizer is lightly ‘watered in’ immediately after application, to avoid “burning” of the foliage, which may occur if fertilizer pellets settle on the leaves. Dung-based organic fertilizers should be avoided.

Bauder Maintenance services:

BauderSOLAR G LIGHT system has relatively low maintenance requirements, however they are extremely important to the condition and performance of the system.

Example maintenance requirements below:

  • Bauder extensive substrate has not eroded and correct depth of ballast is in place.
  • All visible fixings are secure and there has been no movement of mounts/modules.
  • No vegetation is growing around/ through mount fixings.

Removing unwanted leaf litter that has fallen onto the roof surface.

  • Any vegetation which has encroached into drainage outlets, Inspection chambers, walkways and the vegetation barriers (pebbles) should be removed.
  • Remove any weed growth that will exceed 30 mm in height, is invasive or undesirable (if necessary, this can be sprayed with a Glyphosate based herbicide). Any vegetation that shades the modules, however thin will have an impact on PV output and must be cropped.
  • Damage to the landscaping should be reported to the building owner.
