With previous roof re-coverings proving problematic, two key requirements were highlighted, building the thermal performance to help save energy, and improving robustness, to mitigate damage caused by vandalism. The architect worked closely with Sarnafil to ensure the chosen roofing products provided the required detail, specification and performance. A Sarnafil HD bonded system was specified guaranteeing a high quality and durable roof. Overcoming the challenges facing the Council was key to the success of the project. These were health and safety, time, cost, and aesthetics. A cold applied system was used to secure the membrane, eliminating the need for naked flames on the roof. Norwich City Council commented, “The Castle Museum houses collections of national importance, not only did we have to consider the safety of staff and the public, but also the historic collections whose home is beneath the rotunda roof. The need to elimate hot works on this project was a huge issue in specifiying the products to be used.”

Spanning an impressive 8,500m2, the three-storey building makes a striking centrepiece on the water’s edge. With its BREEAM requirements, waterfront position, and proximity to the coast, it was essential that the building’s roof be designed and installed to meet sustainability criteria, whilst being watertight and robust to withstand the elements. As the system needed to exceed a lifespan of 20 years in a coastal region, Sarnafil specified its thickest membrane with a 25-year guarantee – a 2mm membrane, Sarnafil HD, to withstand the elements on the main field area which it currently is doing extremely well.
