Cardiff University……wanted to bring together the School of Computer Science and Informatics and the School of Mathematics into one world-leading facility. The building was designed in collaboration with students and academic staff to create interdisciplinary, flexible, and creative workspaces with innovative teaching areas being key.The SolutionWe were brought in to create two lecture theatres for the new building. The first was to be a space that facilitated group working which was also work as a space that students could use to study and complete work outside of lecture hours. Of course, our award-winning CONNECT seating was the best option for this space. We were able to create a learning space that fully encourages collaboration and interaction that students would enjoy using both in and out of lectures. The space had 121 seat places, 4 of which were tip-up seating that would allow create space for wheelchairs when required. Power and data points were also built in to the desks ensuring students could stay connected while using the space. The main lecture theatre used our Montpellier seating to create a traditional learning environment, that had comfort at it’s core. We worked with the client to create their vision of a pattern using colours that corresponded to the number chain phi (The Golden Ratio – 1.61803 39887 49894 84820 45868 34365 63811 77203 09179) – an interesting and creative nod to the faculty. We also created 8 window seat cushions for various spots throughout the building that would provide comfortable, breakout seating for students to use at their leisure. The OutcomeThe University building opened as a marked return to face-to-face teaching and large-scale lectures after a substantial period of online learning following the Covid-19 pandemic. Students and staff alike have been thrilled to get back in to the building. Jonathan Gillard, deputy head of the school of maths, said “The Abacws building is absolutely fabulous, it has lots of spaces for ad hoc meetings. Students are working, meeting and talking with each other. They are taking full advantage of the building and getting to know each other”. Students have said of the space that they ‘enjoy coming in to the building’, and that it is ‘easier to work together’ in the new space.

University of Leeds……wanted to create lecture theatre spaces that allowed group discussion alongside the use of installed technology for group work, interaction, communication and recording. The inclusion of technology was to contribute to the successful delivery of the University’s Digital Strategy for student education. They wanted to create a space that enriched students learning experiences, while also allowing the teachers to explore new methods of teaching. The SolutionWorking alongside Burwell Deakins Architects and Southerns, Race Furniture proposed the use of our collaborative bench seating, CONNECT, to create strong pedagogies and interactive environments for both student and teacher. Race collaborated with Pure AV to install technology, including tethered laptops, into the benches. The OutcomeThe response to the new learning spaces was fantastic from both students and teachers. There was a significant improvement in user experience amongst the students following the innovative transformation. Students were surveyed before and after the transformation with regards to how satisfied they were with the lecture theatres, how comfortable they found the writing surfaces, how conducive the room was for group study, how satisfied they were with AV and IT provision and how well the lecture theatre lends itself to group work. The results were outstanding! Students loved the new facilities, with overwhelming satisfaction scores above 80% for each of these areas. With each area achieving growth of +20% in satisfaction. The theatres were also awarded Education Project of the Year, in the AV News Awards, which are recognised as the leading awards in the AV sector.Survey statistics from: Lecture theatre transformation success at University of Leeds

Education Seating: University of Leeds – Roger Stevens Building

Race Furniture Ltd

University of Leeds……came back to Race Furniture, after the successful transformation of 3 lecture theatres in 2016, to create a version of the same product in 3 more of their lecture theatres in the iconic Roger Stevens Building. Focussing on the University’s determination to ‘build a fairer future for all’, ergonomics, posture and accessibility were key areas of importance. The university wanted to create a space that was inspiring and collaborative while also being accessible for all. To hit these requirements the client requested a combination of height adjustable tables and standard tables for each of the lecture theatres that also needed to have AV integrated. The full project required 12x seat places at the back of the hall with writing shelf, 9x standard tables and 2x height adjustable tables. The SolutionA height adjustable table was a completely new product for Race Furniture, so a lot of research and development went in to creating the perfect solution. Utilising the connections of our colleagues within the wider group company, we worked with Linak to create smooth moving tables using their electric linear actuator solutions. Two prototypes were developed in the R&D stage, the first as proof of principle and the second with the corrections made. The software was customised to fit the clients requirements, with the table being able to sit between 710-910mm in height. With the AV provisions we also integrated 2 wireless charging spots, speakers, microphones and laptops into the tables, allowing students to remain connected. A row of Montpellier seating was created at the back of the room with a writing shelf that also had integrated, retractable coat hooks. The OutcomeWith the smaller details such as the matching wall infills (also created by Race) and laptop holders upholstered in matching fabrics, the end result was a stunning success. Though, not without it’s challenges, as would be expected for a completely new product creation, the height adjustable table was a great new creation from Race and allowed us to explore new ways of working with computer programming, software development, and technological advancement.Steve Gilley, Director of Estate & Facilities, University of Leeds said: “We listened to feedback from students about recently updated teaching spaces elsewhere in Roger Stevens and in Mechanical Engineering. The new lecture theatres reflect what they have told us they need, from simple additions like coat hooks and more space for bags to the exciting technology that encourages collaborative learning.”*We can’t wait to hear the feedback from all using these new spaces.*Quote taken from: https://estates.leeds.ac.uk/cd-news/roger-stevens-new-teaching-spaces-open/

Theatre Seating: Georgian Theatre Royal, Richmond, North Yorkshire

Race Furniture Ltd

Race were delighted to be appointed as the seating supplier for the recent refurbishment of Britain's most complete Georgian playhouse, the Georgian Theatre Royal in Richmond, North Yorkshire. Our primary aim was to be sympathetic to the original qualities and features of the Georgian three-tier, courtyard-style auditorium while providing a more comfortable and stylish seat. We created bespoke benches and loose seating for the theatre, in a rich green leather with gold embroidered seat numbers. This project was the first to benefit from our brand new partnership with visualisation specialist, Preevue. A 3D model was created of the venue which we then added our 3D seat renders into, allowing the client to see exactly what their new venue and seating would look like, and make instant decisions while working remotely - a huge benefit considering this project was completed during the national lockdown! The CEO of the theatre, Clare Allen, said of her experience working with us: "One of our biggest challenges was to find a partner who could present a solution that would not only be comfortable but also sympathetic to the building’s world-famous heritage... Race Furniture rose admirably to that challenge. From the initial design concepts to the final installation of the benches and chairs, the team have worked hard to produce seating that looks and – very importantly – feels fabulous. The quality of the finished product is also excellent! It is also admirable that the project ran to schedule – crucial when working alongside a busy construction team. We were kept up-to-date with developments and supplied with regular images and descriptions of the various processes. Any unforeseen elements that cropped up as the project unfurled were resolved swiftly and imaginatively. Good communication – evident at all levels of the company – has been greatly appreciated."

The state-of-the-art performance space has the largest audience capacity of any of the London conservatoires – comparable with the Wigmore Hall, and needed its seats to complement it’s stunning wooden finish and meet specific requirements around acoustics and ergonomics. The seats needed to be produced so they did not emit any noise, but so they also absorbed sound too.The SolutionOur Broadway seat was chosen for this project due to is capabilities and customisation options. To provide a seat that absorbed sound we used a perforated underside seat pan, practical and it served the seat with even more style! To meet the ergonomic requirements the seat was created in a variety of styles including high and low backs, and wider seats. The OutcomeAfter rigorous testing to ensure our seat matched the specification we were awarded the project to complete all seating requirements in the new Milton Court building. Riverside Studios……undertook a huge 5-year renovation, with the aim to transform the historic building, that started its life as Riverside Film studio and has seen everyone from world-famous pop icons to the mysterious timelord, Doctor Who, through it’s doors, into a state-of-the-art entertainment destination. As the project neared completion, an outstanding task was to secure seating for its flagship theatre, Studio 2. The Studio was designed to accommodate 500 patrons – making it one of the few midsize theatre spaces in London, but the seating also needed to allow the venue flexibility to arrange seating in a socially-distanced manner also. They wanted to create a space that felt intimate and “up close” while allowing for a capacity that would help to make productions financially viable.Fun fact – the team at Riverside Studios ran, rowed and cycled 32 marathons (840 miles) in order to raise funds for their new seating!!The SolutionCreated in a bespoke width to maximise capacity, our Stanway was an easy solution for this magnificent project. The Stanway is known for its flexibility and is famously chosen by venues that are looking to use their space in a multitude of ways – it would allow Riverside studios to create intimate performance spaces, safely-distanced seating layouts and full-house sell out shows. We also provided removable seat numbers and row letters to allow for maximum flexibility along with bespoke stacking trolleys so that venue hosts could layout the space with ease and store any additional seating effectively. The OutcomeBoasting two theatre spaces, two cinema screens and a multitude of dining options, the venue’s transformation into a full-on entertainment and culinary destination is nothing short of spectacular. The seating has played host to a number of happy audiences and has allowed the venue to use their space in a huge variety of ways.
