Like so many other businesses in the hospitality sector, Bean Coffee and Cocktails, St Pauls Square in Liverpool, has faced numerous challenges over the past 18 months due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The company has had to adapt and adjust its offering in line with social distancing regulations, whilst also keeping customers happy and ensuring the continuation of its business. One way it has achieved this is through the refurbishment of its outside area, using Ecodek’s composite decking boards to create a beautiful, sustainable space for patrons now and in the future. Leah Roberts, Community Manager at Bean Coffee, explains why Ecodek’s sustainable decking was chosen over its competitors: "With early 2021 lockdown restrictions meaning we could only offer customers outside seating, we realised we needed to give our outside area at Bean Coffee and Cocktails, St Pauls Square an upgrade. We wanted to create a cosy outdoor area that was both aesthetic and durable for all seasons. “We chose Ecodek primarily because sustainability is a very important part of our ethos here at Bean Coffee. We are proud of the steps we have taken over the past few years to ensure we are becoming more conscious about our environmental impact. With Ecodek being relatively local and the products being recycled, recyclable and carbon negative it just really made sense to us to choose them. “We were extremely pleased with all aspects of customer service with Ecodek, it was seamless from the initial enquiry to the delivery. The sales team were very informative and helpful, and the delivery guy couldn’t have been more accommodating onsite!” continues Leah. Bean Coffee selected our Heritage composite decking, in slate grey, for the renovation. Slip resistant, splinter free, and low maintenance, these sustainable decking boards are the perfect product for creating outdoor seating areas in bars, cafes and restaurants, where safety is paramount. However, providing customers with an attractive, comfortable, and relaxing environment is also a priority. The modern, yet timeless, slate grey Heritage decking boards provide this unique balance of safety and beauty, combined with longevity and ease of upkeep – a combination Bean Coffee and Cocktails is extremely happy with, as Leah concludes: “The finished product is amazing; we are very happy with how it has turned out! We added some evergreen and seasonal plants to the planters and put some parasols with heaters in and it really has made the space look incredible! Our customers were pretty blown away with the transformation as well and are enjoying the new space we have created."

Deansgate Locks situated in the heart of Manchester city centre, is known for its trendy bars and clubs which all offer a sun terrace for drinking in the summer. As one of the most popular areas of Manchester city centre for a night out, contractors Contract Services R&R Ltd, were looking for a product that was durable and reliable, when refurbishing the flooring area of the sun terrace. Nick Appleton, Project Manager at Contract Services R&R Ltd, said: “When looking for a decking supplier, we knew that the flooring area that we were refurbishing was going to be heavily trafficked and therefore needed a product that had a long lasting warranty. It made complete sense to go with Ecodek as they provide a 25 year commercial warranty, giving us the piece of mind that we needed. The fact that Ecodek are a British manufacturer and based locally in North Wales was an added bonus, as it meant that we did not experience extensive lead times when we needed the product imminently to start the project.” He continued: “The customer care that we received from Ecodek was fantastic. Throughout the sales process, we had the same point of contact throughout which made the whole journey a lot easier. The customer service that Angela provided was great – nothing was too much trouble! I am extremely happy with the finished product and would definitely recommend Ecodek for any commercial refurbishment projects.”

Central London saw the dated 1980s office building 20 Old Bailey receive a huge modernisation & upgrade. Standing directly opposite the iconic law courts, the project was completed in just under 2 years, & saw the demolition taking place at the same time as construction given the short timeframe. The extensive £59m project has enabled the building to now provide circa 240,000 square feet of high specification Cat A office accommodation. ecodek® was specified for 5 stories of long balconies stretched around each floor & the expansive roof terrace, equating to 1100m2 of material!

Many of the projects we feature in case studies have been high end developments in London where the low maintenance, low potential for slip and bespoke lengths are perfectly suited for balconies on multi-storied buildings. However, those qualities (plus the excellent ‘eco credentials’) also mean that ecodek® is equally desirable for residential projects where a home-owner may be landscaping, redeveloping a site or embarking on a new build project. We were very excited to work with a dedicated home-owner on the redevelopment of their home after it was destroyed by floods.

Shelter Solutions are the manufacturer of high quality canopies and shelters, which differentiate from mass produced steel products that are made to fit, as they provide their clients with bespoke structures which are built to size. Ecodek have been working with Shelter Solutions for a number of projects, providing the shelter manufacturer with numerous profiles for bench seating and other small projects. However, in July last year, Shelter Solutions were awarded a contract to design, manufacture, supply and install several of their ‘Trend’ bus shelters on a newly constructed bus shelter interchange in the centre of Ellesmere Port. One of the items that was included within this specific contract was to manufacture and install bench seating within each of their shelters. Robert Leghorn, Project Manager at Shelter Solutions comments: “Ecodek have supplied us with a number of profiles for bench seating and other small projects in the past, but this was the first time we have requested a highly substantial order.” We used Ecodek’s ‘Super Stiff Support Beams’ on this occasion and the product ticked all of the boxes for our client due to the profile being environmentally friendly, solid, a low need for maintenance and a product that utilises a very long life span.” Ecodek’s range covers a broad range of solutions for construction material applications where a solid cross section of wood polymer composites is required. Ecodek’s production techniques lead the industry with their ground breaking sustainability resulting in carbon negative manufacturing. As part of the design partnership for custom profiles, Ecodek’s technical & engineering team work in tandem with customers in the design of any new component profile. “As expected, due to our previous experiences with Ecodek, our product was delivered efficiently and in perfect condition. We would like to thank Ecodek and their staff for helping us deliver a quality product which has only received positive feedback from our client and the public. Creating an inviting outdoor dining and refreshment scene will likely remain a key priority for bars, cafes, and restaurants as they open for trade once again and look to attract customers now and keep everyone safe in the future. During lockdown, businesses increasingly built upon their out-of-doors dining areas ready for welcoming customers once more and leading Ecodek solid decking boards became a firm choice for restaurants and bars wanting an environmentally sustainable solution to accommodate their customers safely and stylishly. One stunningly located hospitality venture to put the Ecodek product in place has been the Lodge Bistro and Coffee Shop, a sustainably created eatery at the South Cerney Outdoor Centre, positioned on the edge of a 50-acre water sports lake in the Cotswold Water Park. Created by merging two recycled shipping containers to form a waterside reverie, the bistro has been clad in larch wood and includes feature bi-fold doors that open invitingly onto the lake’s vista. The Lodge also includes a cantilever deck dining area over the lake’s edge, which has been designed and installed using the Ecodek system. Having experienced first-hand the maintenance issues and potential slip hazards of installing hardwood decking in the past, South Cerney Outdoor Centre’s Managing Director Matt Pritchard wanted to consider alternative indoor and outdoor flooring options, with a wider vision of being able to create an indoor/outdoor space, with little transition between the two once the bi-fold doors were opened. Considering a composite deck solution to be a more durable and stable option, as well as capable of providing a suitable indoor and outdoor aesthetic and level of practicality, Matt was interested in the advantages of enhancing his project using the Ecodek decking system. He explains: “I was looking for a solution that would enable us to use the same board material internally and externally, whilst also bringing a complementary wood effect feel to the whole dining environment. It was important that any flooring solution chosen would echo with our project’s sustainability brief, and be made using recycled and sustainable materials wherever possible.” In ecological terms, Matt’s decking choice has been on brief, as the Ecodek decking solution is designed to be as green as it is long lasting. Purposely created to be repeatedly recycled, and available in lengths that are ‘cut to order’ in the UK at the fabrication stage, Ecodek production and sustainability credentials not only limit waste but help to reduce installation time and customer costs. Furthermore, as Ecodek is formed using a solid composition, water and moisture can’t penetrate the boards and cause rot from within, making the decking ideal for installation at the South Cerney Centre’s lakeside location. “The environmental advantages of choosing an Ecodek installation chimed well with our brand values,” Matt continues, “however we were also impressed with the product’s strength and its capacity to span greater joist centres more effectively than many alternative solutions; whilst remaining aesthetically attractive. “The grip texture of the decking surface presented us with the safety assurances we were looking for, and the speed of product availability helped us keep on track with project timelines.” The Ecodek system’s structure also offered Matt further product advantages over hardwood alternatives. Resistant to impact damage, its solidity provides greater noise absorption properties, so it’s quieter underfoot – an audible benefit in helping to reduce noise levels in dining environments. Simple to install, and with an impressive level of longevity, Ecodek is a reliable choice for commercial purposes as well as domestic projects, and is fully supported with a 25-year guarantee. “With more hospitality businesses keen to create attractive outdoor eating areas to ensure people’s safety, the increase in commercial decking development has been significant,” says Felicity Hodgkinson, Marketing Manager at Ecodek. “Furthermore, as growing numbers of bars and restaurants look to improve their sustainability credentials; either during the initial development stage or as part of a programme of refurbishment, the preference for decking solutions constructed using environmentally sound methods and materials has also flourished. “By choosing an Ecodek installation, hospitality ventures can achieve this ecological ethos, and select building products that are manufactured to last, whilst creating a beautiful decking area for customers to enjoy and return to, time and again.”

Situated in the heart of Northumberland, The Four Sisters is a unique building development comprising of four property rentals, named after the owners’ four daughters – Poppy, Lucy, Romilly & Lydia. Poppy, the largest of the four cottages, features a truly stunning roof terrace in which the Adek Comfort Grip 295 system has become a perfect addition. The clean lines, sleek appearance and concealed fixings of the Adek system reflects the trends of modern building design, which contrasts beautifully with the idyllic turret of the castle. The extra wide 295mm board meant that installation time was dramatically reduced – an important factor when renovating a holiday home, with the aspiration of letting the property in readiness for Spring/Summer. Roy Dods, owner of The Four Sisters commented: “We have been extremely impressed with the level of service from Adek from start to finish. We decided to go for the aluminium decking rather than composite due to its stylish modern appearance which doesn’t compromise the decks overall durability. It was important to us that we found a decking system that was friendly underfoot, and therefore our guests could fully relax in the outdoor space that we have created. The Adek system certainly achieves that! We have harsh winters here in Northumberland, and peace of mind that the system requires minimal maintenance and provides good grip in the wet, as well as the dry, is an added bonus!”
