The system was chosen as it meets all the design criteria and applicable EN standards.The simple wiring system meant the cables could be installed early in the construction program, allowing the builder to complete the internal finishes.This project is significant as it is the first D+H mechanical smoke ventilation system to be installed in the UK.

The systems ensure means of escape are kept clear of a smoke and allow safe access into the building for fire fighters.

D+H UK supplied and installed a mechanical smoke ventilation solution in a Watkin Jones Homes development. The Wharf, set alongside Droylsden Marina offers a collection of modern 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments.The apartment block has 6 levels connected by a central staircase.EN certified dampers are fitted to each floor along with local smoke detection.The fans are placed within the smoke shaft with an opensky louvre situated above them, providing weather protection. A control panel operates the duty and standby fans.Two AOV smoke dome vents are in place to provide smoke clearance, one located on level 6 and the other on the central staircase.If smoke is detected in the building the system will open the corridor AOV, smoke shaft damper, head of stair vent and opensky louvre. The duty fan will run to extract any smoke located in the corridor. In the event of a power failure the standby fan will engage.D+H UK’s fully automatic system allows safe escape for residents and clear access for firefighters.

Newton House is a brand new Housing 21 Extra Care Living development in Penrith. It promotes independent living for people over the age of 55, with access to on-site care. The development offers 54 one and two bedroom apartments.Newton House provides fully accessible facilities for residents and visitors. These include a restaurant, hair salon, residents’ lounge, activity room and communal gardens.D+H UK provided roof vents, dampers and louvres, and supplied and installed the controls in order to ventilate the communal areas.Three staircases are ventilated by certified smoke vent rooflights, each fitted with a KA 54 chain drive.Each of the three internal corridors are ventilated via smoke shafts with smoke dampers and grilles (with concealed drives) at each corridor level and a rooflight at the head of the shaft.Dual colour aluminium double glazed louvres each fitted with a single LDF louvre drive, ventilate the six corridors.All staircase roof vents and louvres are CE marked and tested to EN 12101-2. The shaft dampers are CE marked and tested to EN 12101-8.D+H UK supplied and installed a multizone smoke ventilation control panel with 72 hour battery back up, with one breakglass reset switch for each zone. The control panel will receive signals from the fire alarm to individually trigger each zone. When a corridor zone is triggered, the vent at the head of the adjacent staircase will open. If a smoke shaft inlet vent is triggered, all remaining vents will be locked in the closed position to prevent spread of heat and smoke between floors.The end of corridor louvres can be used for natural day-to-day ventilation when required. Each has a switch located nearby, when pressed, will open the louvres to 25%, allowing fresh air to enter the corridors.

Local Blackfriars is a gated community in Salford, providing 380 apartments. A unique aspect of the residential scheme is the Grade II listed Black Friar pub merged into the development.D+H UK were asked to supply and install mechanical smoke ventilation systems for the apartment blocks and the underground car parks. D+H UK worked closely with Fire Design Solutions and Domis Construction over the course of the project to provide a successful outcome.When a floor goes into fire, the dampers in both shafts on the affected floor open. The chain drive on the AOV window on the affected floor opens to provide fresh inlet air. The vent at the head of the stairwell will also open. Both sets of fans work to extract the smoke and poisonous gases.On activation of a thermostat on a single floor, both the dampers on the affected floor will open. One set of fans will extract on trickle mode and the other shaft will provide fresh inlet air for the system. The vent at the head of the stair will also partly open.If the rain sensor is activated this will override and close the roof vent.If more than one thermostat operates, the dampers on the affected floors will open and be balanced to provide an equal air flow on each floor.Smoke detection in any zone will override the natural ventilation system and smoke extract will take priority.D+H UK provided an eco-park® mechanical ventilation system. Advanced components and control systems allows for efficient energy usage.

The courtyard garden at the heart of the development is inspired by the traditional designs of Kensington Palace Gardens.D+H UK supplied and installed 21 pairs of ZA rack and pinion drives as part of a natural ventilation system within the apartment development, beneath the spectacular garden. Each pair of drives per vent are synchronized using BSY+ technology.The windows provide natural day-to-day ventilation, and are manually triggered via a local breakglass for the removal of cold smoke after a fire.

D+H UK replaced existing windows, fixed windows and louvres with certified NSHEV windows on all floors of both blocks.Work also included the installation of controls and wiring. Our new D+H ACB-Bus drives and CPS-M control system allows us to significantly reduce wiring costs and containment. We are able to provide a single cable for power and control to multiple zones. Each drive can be programmed accordingly for independent operation.

The School of Engineering building at the University of Birmingham is a brand new state-of-the-art 12,000 sqm facility, spanning across five floors featuring a double-height atrium. The 46.5M development brings together many engineering disciplines from across the University. The building’s contemporary and flexible design enables collaborative working between academics, researchers, students and staff.D+H UK provided natural ventilation within offices and meeting rooms around the facility. D+H UK supplied and installed a total of 98 intelligent CDC chain drives, one per window: 74 of these drives are concealed within the frames of bottom hung open inward windows, with specially manufactured flexible chains to allow the sash to open without clashing with the chain. 24 drives are surface mounted, operating top hung outward opening windows, with a larger opening stroke. Advanced Communication Bus (ACB) allows our drives to communicate with the BMS directly via Modbus without additional control panels, which provides true feedback on their opening and conditions. It significantly reduces wiring, installation effort and costs, and makes it possible to specify direct control of the drives down to the millimetre. Brackets and drives were powder coated to match the window framework, providing a seamless finish.
