Birmingham City Hospital - Rada the right medicine for infection control

Rada

Birmingham City Hospital has turned to Rada, to help target improved efficiencies in infection control after detecting higher than expected rates of C. difficile in one of its former Nightingale wards. The ward was deemed a hospital ‘hot spot’ with more occurrences of the infection than other areas. The hospital’s infection control team worked with its capital projects department to put infection control at the top of the agenda for the new ward’s design, which saw 30 of Rada’s Acu non-touch digital thermostatic mixing valves installed. Rada Sense was chosen for the ward’s shower areas.

All camp site showering facilities need to be robust enough to stand up to any use, but Glanllyn Lakeside Caravan and Camping Park’s shower block needs to be tougher than most.Situated on the edge of Lake Bala in the picturesque Snowdonia National Park, the site is popular with sailors and watersports enthusiasts who use the showers as often as three times per day.To cope with such heavy use, Glallyn owners, the Pugh Family, specified a range of Rada products, including Rada Sense digital showers and Rada 215 T3 concealed thermostatic mixing valves, for the park’s four shower blocks. While the products were selected for their robustness, the park’s management turned to Rada as the experts in commercial showering and washroom controls and the manufacturers of the product to oversee the regular maintenance of the systems.Rada’s team visit the site on an annual basis to undertake routine maintenance, ensuring work can be completed in low season to keep disruptions to a minimum, as well as offering repairs and replacement parts when needed. With the site hosting as many as 1,000 guests in the summer, Glanllyn’s owners have taken the step to ensure that the park’s shower blocks are fed in an economical and environmentally friendly way – in keeping with the beautiful surrounding area.Glanllyn now boasts a unique biomass heating system located on site, which burns wood chips to provide year round heat. Rada’s systems, which were first used with the site’s old gas fed system, have made the transition to the modern heat source seamless – with the Service Team playing a key role in the system’s commissioning and ongoing performance.

These are two of the most prominent specialist hospitals in the UK. The Freeman Hospital is renowned for its success in transplant and cancer treatment, while the Royal Victoria Infirmary will become the northern equivalent of Great Ormond Street Hospital in London because of its expertise in paediatrics. The extensive range of products installed include Rada thermostatic mixing valves for hand washing and showering – Rada Sense Washbasin Kit T3, Unatherm, Thermotap and V8/3 – all accredited to NHS Model Engineering Specification D08.The contractor in charge of the project, Laing O’Rourke/Crown House Technologies, chose these products both because they offer value for money and are proven in the demanding hospital environment.Project Engineer Darrin McKenny says: “These are all good and proven products in the healthcare sector and were specified by the Primary Care Trust. They’ve made a bit of a name for themselves.”The Rada Meynell V8/3 L thermostatic mixer is equipped with a long lever control, specifically to assist those people with impaired use of their hands, or who would simply benefit from additional leverage. For those with special needs, the Meynell V8/3 L valve can be fitted with accessories from the Mira special needs range which includes longer (2m) hoses and a 1.5m slide bar.Rada Sense is the UK’s first infra-red, non-touch control panel for both water flow and temperature control designed to help reduce instances of cross infection in healthcare establishments. It also reduces the potential for legionella to breed in pipework ‘dead legs’. The mixing unit is supplied factory-set to comply with TMV3 safe temperature settings for hospitals to prevent scalding where users are vulnerable or where there is a duty of care to the young, infirm or less able.Sense offers a unique combination of safety, hygiene and absolute thermal control using groundbreaking technology, entirely UK designed to the demanding IEC61508 internationally recognised standard for electrical and electronic equipment that is used to provide a safety function. The Unatherm-3 combined thermostatic mixing valve and surgical tap aids surgical basin tap maintenance by being mounted in front of the panel, so that it is fully serviceable from above the basin. This feature aids surgical basin tap maintenance and contributes to improved safety and hygiene on hospital wards and in scrub-up areas. The Rada Thermotap-3 combined basin tap and thermostatic mixing valve is operated via a lever control for ease of use, and there is also an additional longer lever option available.Because mixing occurs within the thermostat assembly in the Thermotap-3, water delivery is both instantaneous and at a safe hand washing temperature. It also offers significant benefits to the installer as it is much easier and quicker to install than a standard pillar tap and separate mixing valve combination.

Birmingham Children's Hospital is a leading UK specialist paediatric centre, offering expert care to 90,000 children from across the country every year. Providing quality treatment and care to patients on this scale required the highest standards of infection control.Hospital water systems can become a source of pathogens and bacteria and a probable source of nosocomial infections. The financial and resource demands this can place on a health service already under considerable pressure are significant. In England alone healthcare-associated infections are estimated to cost the NHS £1 billion a year - with infected patients costing three times more to treat than uninfected patients. Yet, it is the more pressing human cost and the emotional strain on those infected and their families that are incalculable. The estates team has a long standing relationship with Rada, having worked together for over fifteen years. The recent installation of Rada's Sense Washbasin and the Rada Thermotap widely across the hospital has cemented this relationship. The Rada Sense Washbasin Kit T3 is a concealed digital mixing valve for washbasins, offering non-touch flow and temperature control and comes with a wall mounted spout. The Rada Thermotap is a basin mounted thermostatic mixing tap that has a single sequential lever control from cold through to a pre-settable maximum temperature.

Leisure centres are a place for users of all ages to get fit and have fun, particularly busy private facilities like the Castle Country Club in Shrewsbury that boast a large number of members and run activity clubs for children during the school holidays. With washroom facilities in near constant use, any downtime for maintenance and repairs could mean disgruntled guests or a loss of income for Castle Country Club. Much more important, however, are the potentially life saving consequences of washroom system failure – with scalding and infections like Legionnaire’s Disease a real risk.Fortunately, Facilities Manager, Colin Pope knows these risks and takes them extremely seriously, so when it came to ensuring the safety and comfort of their members he turned to Rada to find the solution.Having worked with Rada products throughout a career that has seen him responsible for managing the washroom facilities for more than 120 schools, Mr Pope is well versed in the importance of selecting not only appropriate systems, but ensuring that these systems are properly maintained.Mr Pope brought his experience of working with Rada products and services to the Castle Country Club nearly two decades ago, where a project to design the pool and changing facilities saw him take on a permanent role at the site. His knowledge of the demands based on washroom facilities means that robustness, vandal resistance and user safety are all key concerns – though in a private leisure club it doesn’t hurt to use products that are aesthetically pleasing and offer simple, intuitive operation for users. Nowhere is he more conscious of this than in the sites. The complex’s busy leisure centre boasts 18 Rada Sense digital shower units and Rada 425 thermostatic mixing valves that are in almost constant use across three changing areas. Chartered Engineer Mr Pope felt that while specifying appropriate products designed to withstand this level of use was important, ensuring that the site is safe and can remain operational year-round was vital.Rada’s team of experts visit the site on six monthly intervals to undergo maintenance work, as well as offering an emergency call out service to undertake immediate repairs using parts direct from Rada’s manufacturing facility in Cheltenham.Having such a wealth of experience in facilities management, Rada’s visits allow Mr Pope to undertake additional activities, such as nightly duty flushing and monthly water sampling, to safeguard guests from the spread of bacteria like Legionella. With a 24-hour turnaround for servicing, and a team that have built a strong relationship with Mr Pope and the site’s staff, Rada’s maintenance teams are able to undertake works with minimal disturbance to gym-goers - keeping the club as healthy as its members.

The decision to close and refurbish the ward allowed a total rethink in terms of infection control and prevention, as well as improved ergonomics, patient comfort and privacy. The hospital’s infection control team worked with its capital projects department to put infection control at the top of the agenda for the new ward’s design, which saw 30 of Rada’s Acu non-touch digital thermostatic mixing valves installed, replacing 13 conventional taps. Rada Sense was chosen for the ward’s shower areas. While the remit was to specifically bring effective non-touch controlled hand-washing and showering facilities to the new ward, water management and maintenance was also seen as important. Paul Scott of the capital projects team said:” The estates department wanted a move away from old style elbow taps because of the labour intensive aspect of having to flush each tap manually. With Rada’s T-LogicTM digital intelligence controlling both the Acu and Sense products, it allows them to operate, communicate and exchange information with the mixing valves to ensure that high degrees of safety, hygiene and control are maintained.” Testimony to the effectiveness of the revamped ward has come from the nursing staff, many of whom worked in the original ward, and whose feedback has been very positive. Dr Beryl Oppenheim, a specialist in infection control, said:” From the outset we wanted to put infection control at the very heart of the day to day running of the new ward. From our point of view the ward in its new guise has certainly raised the bar in this respect.”In addition to the Rada Acu and Sense installations, the refurbished 25-bed unit also features floor signs in front of each hand basin with the words ‘Wash your hands’ and hand washing facilities outside the ward door.

Shower cubicles at the 100 pitch Thames side park have recently been completely upgraded and, as Andrew Townsend, a partner in the business explains, Bridge Villa aims to offer visitor’s a high quality caravanning or camping experience.“Caravanner’s invest significant amounts of money in their ‘vans and towing vehicles and we were aware that visitors to our site expect on site facilities to reflect their investment. In our opinion, it is only right that the facilities at the sites they visit should be first rate and the washrooms always make the first impression,” he explains. The owner’s took the decision to completely upgrade the two storey washroom and toilet block at the site and opted to install Rada Sense digitally controlled showers that provide no touch water flow and temperature control while also offering the maintenance team a range of easy to perform service functions. In total there are 12 Rada Sense units in the shower block and as well as producing an aesthetically pleasing look, the user response has been very positive. The showers bring a very modern look to the washrooms with their chrome plated control panels which are supported by a range of high quality fittings. As Roy Minett, Commercial Marketing Manager of Kohler Mira explains, with its T-logic digital intelligence, Rada Sense is smarter, safer and more hygienic than any other tap/shower control on the market and satisfies a range of issues addressed by The Health and Safety Commission’s ‘Approved Code of Practice L8’.“Rada Sense is not an ordinary ‘no-touch’ tap because not only does it allow the user to initiate water flow, it also allows the selection of the water temperature without touching the panel,” he explains. “For safety, precise maximum and minimum water temperatures and flow times can be pre-set using a remote hand held computer and these settings are maintained even if there are water pressure or temperature fluctuations.“The Rada Sense digital mixing valve also incorporates an intelligent ‘duty flush’ feature that monitors the time since the outlet was last used. If it has not been used for a pre-determined time (say 24 hours) the appliance is automatically flushed through at a safe temperature to clear water that may have been stagnant in the pipe work or, more importantly, in any dead legs,” he adds. This feature is particularly relevant to site’s such as Bridge Villa where, in order to maintain best practice in the water supply system, regular flushing of the showers to prevent potential legionella and bacteria problems developing within the hot water system dead legs must be undertaken. This can be both time consuming and labour intensive if undertaken manually.“The Health and Safety Commission’s ‘AcoP L8’ also recommends routine thermal disinfection as a means of preventing or controlling legionella," explains Roy Minett. “With Rada Sense this can be achieved by activating its thermal disinfection mode which – under supervision – allows hot water at a temperature of at least 60°C to be flushed through the electronic mixing valve and all outlet pipe-work. Of course this is simply not possible where conventional TMV’s are fitted,” he adds.Other key features of the Rada Sense T-logic technology include a facility that performs 5 safety checks, 40 times a second, a ‘lock out’ facility that activates if a fault is detected and a second temperature sensor that will close down the system if for any reason the water temperature exceeds a safe level. The mixing unit is also supplied factory-set to comply with TMV3 safe temperature settings for hospitals.“We are delighted with the new look washrooms and have even been recommended by a number of our visitors to put forward the complete installation for the ‘Loo of the year’ award,” concludes Bridge Villa’s Andrew Townsend. “We are sure the Rada Sense showers will give us a head start over many other caravan and camping sites.”The washroom upgrade and Rada Sense installation was undertaken by Warburton Building Services of Farmoor, Oxfordshire.
