Vertical overlapping active fire curtain barrier suitable for applications requiring BS 8524-compliant fire compartmentation across large or irregular openings, including protected means of escape, atria, lobbies, reception areas, corridor separation, openings in fire-resisting walls, boundary protection, escalators, stairwells, lift shafts and lift lobbies.
Regularly specified within hospitals and healthcare facilities, schools and universities, hotels, high-rise buildings, offices, retail environments, stadia, museums and galleries, as well as transport infrastructure such as train stations and airports. Also appropriate for warehouses, factories, nurseries, shopping centres, restaurants, and defence or custodial environments where large-span fire containment is required.
The Flameshield 8524 Overlapping Fire Curtain is designed for multiple applications such:

The Flameshield 8524 Overlapping Vertical Active Fire Curtain Barrier is an electrically operated, gravity fail-safe fire curtain system designed to provide BS 8524-compliant fire compartmentation across wide openings using overlapping curtain leaves. The system delivers 120 minutes fire integrity and up to 74 minutes radiation performance, supporting occupant tenability and protected means of escape strategies in large or complex layouts.
The barrier assembly comprises a carbon steel barrel and integrated 24 V d.c. electric motor, incorporating a high-performance flexible fire curtain fabric capable of withstanding temperatures in excess of 1000°C. Barrel deflection performance complies with BS 6323-5, ensuring stability and reliable deployment. A two-section bottom rail provides controlled descent, consistent tension and dependable gravity fail-safe operation in the event of power or system failure.
The overlapping configuration allows multiple curtain leaves to deploy in sequence, forming a continuous fire-resisting barrier where single-span solutions are impractical. A two-stage closing operation with optional timed delay supports phased evacuation strategies and safe building management.
Designed to complement architectural intent, the Flameshield 8524 Overlapping curtain can be concealed above ceiling lines, with end plates, guides and head boxes available in specialist RAL finishes, enabling seamless integration with interior design schemes.
A comprehensive suite of ancillary safety devices is available, including egress switches, access switches, obstruction detection, and heat and smoke activation, all fully tested to Annex H of BS 8524-1. Optional audible and visual warning systems, including voice warning devices, can be specified to enhance occupant awareness during deployment.
The system is fully compliance-tested, incorporates low-maintenance components, and is capable of full reset following fire testing without the need for specialist engineer attendance.
Independent testing and approval has been carried out by Warrington Fire Research Centre and Exova, with fire and radiation performance tested to BS EN 1634-1 in accordance with BS 8524-1. Manufacture aligns with Warrington Test WF 366190 and relevant sections of BS EN 16034, ensuring consistent quality and regulatory confidence.
