Supermarket car park

OVERVIEW

The Brief:

We were approached to design a concept for waterproof sealed car park bollards that could be used on multi-storey car parks for a very large supermarket chain.

The Problem:

Standard Car Park Bollards Allow Water Ingress

When car park bollards are installed directly into the ground on the top floors of multi-storey car parks, it enables water to penetrate through the floor and causes internal damage to the floor below. This is exacerbated when bollards are then hit by vehicles, as they often are, as the groundwork is further damaged and this increases the problem of water getting in.

The client needed a solution to overcome the issue of bollards not remaining watertight when installed the traditional way, to avoid costly water damage.

The Solution:

We set about designing a car park bollard that would allow zero water penetration, that could withstand multiple car impacts without damaging the fittings, and that still offered the required level of protection.

In collaboration with a liquids technology company, Westwood Liquids and an installation contractor, Mulberry, we came up with the solution. The TS130 was successfully developed.

The TS130 is our base fixed bollard (TB130) with the addition of a specifically designed galvanised base plate that is fixed directly into the concrete base pad, with the four threaded location pins facing up. The location pins protrude up through the special external surface floor seal to allow the bollard to be securely fixed in position. This fixing method coupled with the unique flex technology greatly reduces the potential for damage to the sealing floor on impact from a parking vehicle.

The TS130 is now the specified product design for Tesco multi-storey car parks.
