Portsmouth City Council - Re clad

OVERVIEW

High-rise safety upgrade reflects growing preference for best practice.

A £22m fire safety programme has been rolled out at various high-rise buildings in Portsmouth, going above and beyond minimum regulatory requirements with the use of the Safe One advanced breather membrane supplied by ITP.

The city council has introduced a range of measures to its residential stock following detailed Fire Risk Assessments which identified areas where improvements could be made to several buildings, including Ladywood House in Somers Town, Nickelby House in Buckland, Handsworth House in Quinton Close and Sarah Robinson House in Queen Street. Buildings have been retrofitted with new sprinklers and fire doors while façade specialist, All Facades UK Ltd, has replaced panelling made from coated glass reinforced plastic, high pressure laminate and PVC composite.

The replacement panels are manufactured from materials which meet a Euroclass A2 fire safety rating in keeping with requirements by law for cladding and other external wall elements. Safe One, which is also Euroclass A2 rated, is being fitted beneath the panels to ensure that the façade upgrade is completed to maximise fire safety.

ITP Account Manager, Jess Harrison, said:

“Post-Grenfell, there has been a lot of discussion about the removal and replacement of cladding made from combustible aluminium composite material, also known as ACM. The changes to external elevations at this programme in Portsmouth demonstrate that there are other façade features and materials which require attention on many of the UK’s existing high-rise buildings. The work carried out by All Facades UK Ltd is a reflection of a growing preference to not only meet but also exceed the fire safety standards set out in current regulations– breather membranes are not required by law to have a Euroclass A2 rating, but Safe One has been chosen as its A2 classification is in keeping with a commitment to best practice which ensures that every part of the building envelope minimises fire risk.”

Safe One offers a combination of high-performance attributes which is unique in the UK market. In addition to a Euroclass A2 rating and a high level of breathability, the system has a W1 rating for waterproofing and an unrivalled water resistance of 7000 mm – an especially valuable advantage for high rise buildings exposed to driving rain. As well as being UK suppliers of Safe One, ITP manufactures a wide range of other protective solutions for buildings, including ground barriers, vapour control layers, roof underlays, UV resistant membranes and house wraps.
