CORK AIRPORT RUNWAY RECONSTRUCTION SPECTRUM CASE STUDY

OVERVIEW

Allied Infrastructure, by Colas Ltd.

End client is DAA – Cork Airport.

Over 40 million was invested in Cork Airport between 2020-2022 to upgrade the critical infrastructure at the Airport of which the main runway reconstruction, a new Electrical Sub-Station and a new Hold Baggage Security screening system, constitute the major parts.

The project to reconstruct the main runway (16/34) was supported by Government funding of 10 million from the Department of Transport, with the balance of the funding coming from Cork Airport’s parent company, DAA plc, to complete the project.

Meon was approached and asked to provide a solution for permanent runway markings.

ViaLine F210 was used along with Echostar 5 SBP Type 1 Glass Beads, and applied using the Graco LineLazers. The Zirocco Dryers were also used to aid with surface preparation.

The main reason for the use of ViaLine F210 was it’s track record with Cork Airport & Allied Infrastructure. Both companies have tried multiple other materials, but have always come back to the ViaLine F210.

The ViaLine F210 has an increased durability, bead retention and whiteness, and is certified to 1,000,000 wheel passes.

The finished project demonstrates how effective the ViaLine F210 was at delivering professional, clean, and consistent lines.

The reconstruction of Cork Airport’s main runway was the fastest large-scale construction project undertaken in the State in recent years - 12 months from funding approval to the completion of the main works – encompassing EU tendering, design, regulatory approvals and construction.

Systems Used:

- ViaLine F210 with Echostar 5 SBP Type 1 Glass Beads

- Graco Line Lazers 200HS and 250DC
