Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth – A&E

OVERVIEW

Queen Alexandra Hospital recently unveiled its state-of-the-art £58 million Accident & Emergency (A&E) Department.

Designed to enhance patient care, this new facility incorporates advanced infrastructure and thoughtful design to support staff efficiency. Replacing a facility that had been in use since the 1970s, the new department promises a "better experience" for patients, with improved space and design to handle increasing demand. The hospital required furniture and fittings that matched the department’s innovative architectural vision while ensuring durability and compliance with healthcare standards. Specifically, the reception area needed a design that would be both practical and visually striking.

Working closely with IHP (VINCI Building UK and Sir Robert McAlpine) and A&D Architects, Medspace Solutions provided:

  • Custom Cabinetry: Functional storage solutions integrated seamlessly with advanced medical systems.
  • Reception Desks: Ergonomically designed, including the boat-shaped desk, a nod to Portsmouth’s maritime heritage.
  • Durable Materials: High-quality finishes designed to endure the demands of a busy emergency department.

Collaboration is key to success

The hospital required furniture and fittings that matched the department’s innovative architectural vision while ensuring durability and compliance with healthcare standards. A focus on patient-centric care guided every aspect of the build. From the layout to the materials used, the department was meticulously planned to ensure a seamless experience for patients, their families, and staff. Additionally, the inclusion of dedicated staff spaces fosters a supportive and efficient working environment.

  • Seamless Integration: Collaborative efforts ensured Medspace’s designs perfectly complemented the architectural vision.
  • Enhanced First Impressions: The iconic reception desk became a highlight, creating a welcoming environment.
  • Improved Efficiency: Thoughtful cabinetry design allowed staff to work more effectively.

Medspace Solutions, in conjunction with Gradus who helped clad the desk, delivered the architectural vision. This reception desk is a striking design element that ties into the hospital's maritime location. Inspired by Portsmouth’s nautical heritage the iconic boat-shaped desk based on the Paddle Steamer Waverley, the world’s last seagoing paddle steamer. This unique feature combines functionality with aesthetic appeal.

The desk provides a welcoming and efficient space for staff to manage patient intake while creating a calming first impression for visitors. Its thoughtful design ensures ease of use for staff and promotes a positive atmosphere in the busy and often stressful emergency care environment.

The successful completion of the Radiotherapy Centre at MKUH exemplifies how strategic partnerships, sustainable practices, and community-focused design can come together to create a facility that significantly improves patient outcomes. Medspace Solutions is proud to have been part of this impactful project, delivering bespoke, high-quality cabinetry and fit-out solutions that align with the needs of both healthcare providers and patients. This project not only sets a new standard for regional healthcare facilities but also reaffirms the importance of building with community health at the forefront.
