Brunel House is a listed building being converted into luxury apartments. Replacing the primary windows was not permitted, so our client needed to look at a different solution to gain the thermal performance required.The windows were large sashes, requiring heavy duty frames with tilt facility, providing simple access to the primary windows for cleaning and maintenance. An unusual and bespoke feature of this project was - at the architect’s request - trickle vents installed in the bottom of the secondary glazing track.The end result is that, without any visible sign of works “Replacing the primary windows was not permitted” being done, tenants would experience comfort levels that match modern day double glazing, even though their windows are over 100 years old.

This Edwardian office building in a London west end conservation area has undergone a remarkable transformation, re-emerging as luxury apartments. The project, led by architects De Metz Forbes Knight, redesigned and updated the stone-fronted property on the corner of Great Portland Street and Langham Street, which boasts high windows and fine London. We were appointed to design, supply and install 71 heritage casement windows which would reflect the original styling yet provide modern thermal containment. We created the windows using Slimlite double glazed units with larch frames, and also applied EPDM sealant to further contribute to energy efficiency.

The Progressive Players were founded in 1920. In 1939, founding members Ruth, Sylvia and Hope Dodds generously provided the money to purchase a vacant site facing Saltwell Park, together with adjoining No.3 Saltwell View, and build the Players’ own theatre.The Little Theatre is believed to be the only playhouse built in Britain during World War II and to this day it remains Gatehead’s only theatre. It opened with a performance of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ in October 1943 and since then the site has remained home to the Progressive Players who now produce ten plays a year.Closed during the pandemic, funding was completed on an extension, creating a new rehearsal room above the auditorium known as ‘The Studio’. This facility has exactly the same dimensions as the main auditorium stage meaning the transfer from rehearsals to final production is much smoother than was previously possible.The new space is acoustically isolated from the auditorium and stage allowing rehearsals to proceed even during a performance and was designed to be in keeping with the look and feel of the original theatre. Fitted with modern lighting and sound systems, the rehearsal room has the latest connectivity and networking capabilities. New steel windows were required to replace the originals at the theatre. Clement W20 steel frames were chosen, polyester painted in Jet Black (matt). The two modular bay windows at the front of the building are particularly striking and the choice of glass was important.  SunGuard SuperNeutral 62/34 was chosen for the outer pane, offering very high natural light transmission while ensuring energy savings through solar protection and thermal insulation, krypton gas was used for the centre of the pane and 4mm of toughened Planibel Grey was used for the inner pane. The newly refurbished Little Theatre will not only be used for the Progressive Players' rehearsals, visiting hires and local community groups, but it is also hoped that it will eventually accommodate a youth theatre group.Photography taken and provided by Robbie Carruthers, Chairman, Little Theatre.  

The legacy PVC-U windows, doors and curtain walling at 15 high and low-rise blocks owned by Bristol City Council at Eastville, Easton, Clifton, Redcliffe, Shirehampton and Ashton Gate needed to be replaced to improve thermal efficiency, security and aesthetics. An experienced company was required to carry out the complex, high profile, multi-phase works required. The contract was awarded to longstanding Profile 22 Approved Window Manufacturer Emplas. The Optima 70mm fully reversible window system provides high security locking, child resistant safety catches and achieves a weather performance of 2400pa for wind, 1500pa for water and 600pa for air.

In the renovation of a substantial property in London SE1, in the historic Borough of Southwark, Mumford & Wood, specialists in the design and manufacture of premium quality timber windows and doors, have supplied Conservation™ casement windows and sliding sash windows for a sensitive renovation. This mixed use building was one of the last remaining plots awaiting development by morelondon.

Profile 22’s Optima windows were chosen for the refurbishment of two tower blocks and the construction of a new low rise apartment block to create 224 one- and two-bedroom independent living apartments in Nottingham.

Based in Lincoln this multiple dwelling new build project required sash windows to fit its architecture. The homes were built using local stone which meant standard white windows wouldn’t match its high-end appearance. The developers also needed windows that came with high performing benefits such as thermal efficiency, security, all while remaining maintenance-free. Using our in-house spray shop, Charisma Rose was specified in a solid cream option that complimented the stonework beautifully. The trickle vents were also colour matched to seamlessly blend in with the windows and keep the luxury charm of the buildings. A traditional astragal bar grid was picked to match Georgian architecture as well as run through horns and a 2/3 unequal split for the ground floor. This project ran smoothly providing more than 50 sash windows over seven dwellings. All windows were manufactured and delivered on time and snag-free, meaning there was no impact on the developers schedules.

Based in London, this home’s original black timber windows had rotted due to many years of natural weathering. The homeowners wanted replacement windows that would match their existing sightlines but provide modern thermal performance, save them maintenance costs in the future and enhance security. Because of this, the homeowners explored the timber alternative UPVC option and found our Heritage Rose sash window. Heritage Rose provides ‘A’ rated thermal efficiency and modern security levels as standard but can achieve the slim, authentic sightlines traditional to the original sashes. Using our in-house spray shop, we were able to replicate the home’s original sashes by spraying them black with a woodgrain textured finish. Even with a coloured finish, the homeowners can enjoy maintenance free benefits without the worry of future restoration costs. The windows were finished with a singular vertical astragal bar configuration to match the Victorian period styling of the property and a traditional deep bottom rail. The homeowners would also continue to save money for years to come on heating and maintenance bills.

TRC Windows have recently undertaken a project at Cadogan Terrace in East London (E9) to install 160 new casement windows across several buildings in this iconic, well-loved location.The projectNestled near Hackney Wick overground station and the Regent’s Canal, Cadogan Terrace is an attractive Victorian terrace with stunning views of the beautiful green spaces and delightful boating lakes of Victoria Park.The houses on Cadogan Terrace are full of quintessential British charm and we were proud to be asked to work on this refurbishment project to lovingly give these buildings a new lease of life.To deliver the project, which will span the course of eighteen weeks, TRC are partnering with AD Construction Group Limited, one of the UK’s leading privately owned public sector specialist providers of refurbishment services.

Located in the Welsh countryside of Rhos-Fawr, a family were building their own Victorian style farmhouse and wanted sash windows to complete the traditional look. The homeowners wanted windows that were over two-metres tall, with a genuine traditional appearance and - because of the exposed location - effective weatherproofing. White woodgrained Ultimate Rose windows were ideal for this project. This conservation-grade timberalternative option allowed for the large sizes (1500 x 2350mm) that this home required, while remaining indistinguishable from timber originals. In addition, our Ultimate Rose can be fully Secure by Design accredited providing full peace of mind. To keep with the Victorian style, a single astragal bar configuration was chosen along with a deep bottom rail. Ultimate Rose also includes a 35mm slim and seamless midrail as standard, providing fully authentic sightlines and allowing the maximum amount of natural light into the home. As a result, the home benefits from impressively large sash windows that beautifully match the traditional style of the building, but in a maintenance-free package that includes the thermal and security performance that comes with modern materials and manufacturing techniques.

This Edwardian home was transformed inside and out in 2021. Part of the renovation included changing the original single glazed, draughty timber sash windows. The sashes were previously painted shut to minimise heat loss, but this was proving both inconvenient and ineffective. The homeowners wanted to find replacement windows that were indistinguishable from their original timbers but in a low maintenance form that offered significantly better security and thermal efficiency. Having spent months looking around for the right solution, the homeowners found Roseview and, specifically, Ultimate Rose. Being the most authentic window on the timber-alternative market, they would match their original timber sashes like for like but with this maintenance free alternative. The windows were finished in a chalk white texture with an Edwardian astragal bar design, seamless run-through horns, deep cills, Secure by Design accreditation and shark fin limit stops throughout. Additionally, Ultimate Rose comes with ‘A’ rated energy efficiency as standard. For the homeowners, this means lower heating bills month-to-month and a reduced carbon footprint. This is due to Roseview sash windows being double-glazed and fully weather-sealed, unlike the home’s original timber windows. As a result, the homeowners now have sash windows that never need repainting and will naturally keep their home insulated and secure without sacrificing authenticity.

Profile 22’s award winning optima suite of casement and Tilt and Turn Windows along with matching PVCU doors were specified in the refurbishment of two tower blocks in Walsall, West Midlands. The windows are designed to deliver increased insulation and weather protection, which makes them the perfect choice for high-rise, exposed locations. Increasing energy efficiency was one of the key drivers of the refurbishment. They are capable of achieving WER of A++ and U-values of 0.8 W/m2K. Indicative performance measures are 600Pa for air permeability, 600Pa for water tightness and 2400Pa for wind resistance.

On this office refurbishment the original windows were non-thermally broken aluminium and for that reason not suitable for a residential tenancy.With the windows being on the 12th floor it would have been extremely difficult and expensive to replace them - due to scaffolding etc. Therefore, after a recommendation, the client decided to source Incarnation secondary glazing.As an office refurbishment in a busy built-up area, noise reduction was a key consideration. Using a hidden coupling bar between two units was a key feature, allowing the secondary glazing to match the sightlines of the original windows perfectly. By installing the secondary glazing with an air gap of 150mm between it and the existing window resulted in an impressive decibel reduction.

The VELFAC composite system has been installed in two award-winning student halls built for the University of St Andrews. Designed by HLM Architects, Powell and Whitehorn Halls provide comfortable and stylish accommodation for over 380 undergraduates and postgraduates, with VELFAC windows providing excellent thermal insulation and maximum natural light. VELFAC units are also integral to innovative architectural façade features, including dramatic glazed screens and angled window pods.

Described by architects Proctor and Matthews as a ‘courtyard oasis for later living’, large fixed VELFAC windows combine with smaller units and doors, all with uniform sightlines to create glazed screens fronting all 38 apartments. The internal timber frame also creates a ‘domestic’ interior finish’.

This seven-storey buiding in Soho, West London claims some impressive history: dating from the 1930s, it was the former London headquarters of Paramount Studios. Now in a conservation area, its transition to 15 luxury apartments needed to be handled with sensitivity by TF Architecture, to preserve the building’s external appearance. We were delighted to design, manufacture and install 83 traditional box sash windows for the project, made from Accoya. This high-performance timber is created using a patented chemical process to dramatically increase its strength, stability, durability and insulation, while still maintaining the beauty and character of timber.

In 2014 landmark building No1 Aire Street underwent a dramatic transformation. The Grade II listed, 1930s Art Deco property is in Leeds City Centre Conservation Area. Significant consultation with Leeds City Council planning department and the owner Network Rail’s planners was carried out to ensure the proposals were historically compatible with the existing building. Almost a hundred original steel windows had to be replaced as sympathetically as possible but with a product which would bring improved thermal efficiency. Clement EB24 suite of bespoke steel windows was specified for the project offering high specification along with elegant, robust frame sections.

Arden windows were approached by a Main Contractor that was looking for a manufacturer and installer of high quality sliding sash windows to replace several hundred windows across various properties in on behalf of the Borough. The client’s key considerations were to ensure that their residents were provided with a thermally efficient high-performance window that would provide a better home whilst ensuring planning authorities and local conservation were content with the design and aesthetics of the replacement windows. Arden were invited to be involved with the project at a very early stage and were able to offer assistance with the submission of the planning applications, including discussions with conservation officers for the area. Ultimately Arden surveyed the properties, produced drawings to demonstrate existing and proposed details for the replacement windows and achieved full planning consent. During the process, Arden representatives worked directly with the Conservation officers including providing sample windows and attending a number of meetings in an effort to ensure that the replacement double glazed windows were acceptable to all parties. One of the key issues encountered was the initial reluctance of the Conservation Officer to allow the single glazed windows to be replaced by double glazed units using a bonded spacer bar as opposed to a more traditional solid glazing bar. As the client was keen to ensure costs were kept to a minimum and thermal performance was improved, the preferable choice was to use Arden Window sliding sash window with a bonded bar and a “plant on” timber glazing bar. Once Arden had manufactured a full-size sample window this was shown to the Conservation officer and the benefits explained. Due to the traditional appearance of the Arden window, the planning applications were approved and the project was able to proceed. Early engagement with Arden was key to the successful outcome of the project. This ensured that the design and planning requirements of the client and conservation teams were realised. It also facilitated the planning of manufacture and installation, coordinating with the main contractor at a very early stage thus ensuring the project was delivered and completed on time and within agreed budgets. 

Traditional Windows and Doors for a Historic Pub Renovation and Executive Housing DevelopmentThe Melbourne Arms, a cherished historic pub near Derby, underwent a remarkable transformation into a prestigious executive housing development. To preserve the charm and character of the old English pub, bespoke traditional windows and doors were essential.Restoring the Melbourne ArmsThe Melbourne Arms, a listed building with a rich 228-year history, had fallen into disrepair until Stanton Developments acquired it in 2018. They embarked on a comprehensive restoration of the pub and the creation of five additional houses on the site. Unsuitable extensions were removed, allowing the pub to be transformed into two linked detached four-bedroom family homes. The restoration honoured the original features, including the iconic stacked chimneys and distinctive inglenook fireplace."From the double-height skirting to the reinstated upstairs fireplace, we feel privileged and proud to have renovated this historically significant building," expressed Andy Turner, Stanton Developments.Creating an Enclave of HousesIn addition to the pub restoration, Stanton Developments built five new properties on the site, forming an enclave that harmoniously complemented the landmark pub. Each house was individually designed while respecting the aesthetics of the original structure and blending seamlessly within the local conservation area. The houses were named after former proprietors and notable figures associated with the property's history.Award-winning architect Matthew Montague designed the properties, adding his touch of excellence to Stanton Developments' vision.Gowercroft's ContributionGowercroft, known for their expertise in traditional windows and doors, was selected to provide the windows and doors for the Armsgate Development. The focus was on combining historic styling with modern performance, using the finest materials. Accoya® Windows from the Hardwick Range, featuring flush casement windows, and a selection of Accoya® doors from the Melbourne Range were chosen.To maintain individuality, each house had subtly different front door designs and colours, tailored to the specific property. Elaborate ironmongery and Accoya surrounds distinguished the larger properties, setting them apart.Attention to DetailPreserving the authenticity of the original window design was crucial for the plot that once housed the pub. Gowercroft crafted traditional Georgian bar windows, while also introducing unique triangular-shaped windows that added a touch of originality to the development.The combination of Stanton Developments' commitment to historic restoration and Gowercroft's expertise in traditional windows and doors resulted in a remarkable housing development that seamlessly merged the past with the present.

It was a pleasure for all involved to work on this outstanding project, an original Arts and Crafts home which has been impeccably refurbished.The recent works included extending the house, as well as opening up and changing the layout. The interior has been modernised with a contemporary touch, but cleverly retains and enhances the home’s character. The interior design of the whole home is stunning. The bedrooms and bathrooms have been individually designed and are unique to their user. Mural wallpapers, vibrant pops of colour and striking, high quality fixtures and fittings help achieve this.A combination of leaded EB20 steel windows and W40 steel doors with genuine T bars were chosen to replace the external fenestration. The new windows and doors have slim, elegant frames but bring the benefit of improved thermal efficiency and security. Internally, a bespoke W20 door screen has been used to divide the kitchen and dining area.Both the client and architect are delighted with the outcome. Their communication throughout has been excellent and we have felt looked after every step of the way. Installation was done ahead of schedule and the only issue we’ve had post installation has been dealt with efficiently and they have always had someone available to pick up the phone to us and come to site when needed. With 37 high-rise buildings within its remit, Solihull Community Housing (SCH) is responsible for the upkeep of more than 1% of the UK’s entire high-rise stock. Part of a stock of 11,000 properties that SCH manages and maintains on behalf of Solihull Council. A window replacement programme on this scale – and on high-rise buildings especially – would normally represent an astronomical undertaking, incurring huge installation costs. However, SCH and its supplier and contractor partners have worked together to devise an innovative solution that allows all new windows to be installed from the inside.

The owner of this charming period cottage needed to replace original timber sash windows that had deteriorated, and which were cold, drafty and lacking in security.

A great example of 1930s Art Deco architecture, The Douglas Building sits on Great Titchfield Street in London’s West End. Formerly known as The Media Village, Douglas House was acquired by serviced office providers The Office Group (TOG) from landlords The Langham Estate in 2019. TOG together with Note Design Studio transformed the building with a colourful concept that blends the distinctive 1930s features and gives a sense of fluidity, openness and light throughout.As its former name suggests this area of London is a hub for local media and IT businesses operating out of the West End and the brief for the building was to create a flexible workspace where people can feel stimulated by their environment leading to greater productivity. Wellness was also a central focus and the building includes an oxygen room, a parents’ room and a roof terrace which are all integral to enabling and inspiring everyone who enters.Well ventilated and an abundance of natural light have become buzzwords in the COVID era and the more than 300 new steel windows from the Clement EB24 range which were chosen by office fit out and refurbishment contractors Parkeray perfectly facilitate both. Polyester powder coated in Pure White and furnished with Warren handles in a satin chrome finish the windows lend the building a contemporary look on the outside as well as supporting the 21st century ways of working inside.Peter Clement, Chief Executive of Clement Windows Group, commented:“As with all prestigious window replacement projects of this magnitude Clement took part in a competitive tender process. Whilst this was in play we understand that both Parkeray and the client’s team had the opportunity to compare our EB24 steel window to others being considered. This grand Edwardian property began life as commercial premises, but has recently been given a new lease of life by urban regeneration experts Stockwool Design. The site near the City of London, known as Sterling Mansions, has been transformed into 59 quality apartments for Berkeley Homes. We designed, manufactured and installed 216 traditional timber flush casement windows with feature moldings. Fitted with high acoustic double glazing on the Leman Street elevation, the windows achieved an impressive 45 dB Rw acoustic performance rating (55.4 ACf / 12 / 44.1 Low-E glass).

This Grade II listed building in Thames Ditton dates from 1792. The former manor house, priory and chapel was repurposed as a care home in 1905 by the Nuns of Compassion, yet in recent years the historic buildings have posed challenges to delivering modern standards of care. Oliver & Robb Architects have rationalised the design in a renovation project to created 78 luxury bed spaces. We were appointed to design, supply and install a total of 263 timber tilt and slide sash windows, tilt and turn windows, single doors and French doors to sympathetically upgrade the property.

University Arms Hotel, the oldest hotel in Cambridge, dates from the 1840s when it first opened as a coaching inn. Extensions followed in the 1930s an 1960s; but in 2013 John Simpson Architects began returning cohesion and grandeur to the building. The aim was 190 bedrooms boasting 5-star luxury. We were proud to be awarded the 14-month contract to design, supply and install 300 timber box sash windows, 50 balcony French doors, and 28 curved-on-plan sash windows. We also produced large bespoke entrance screens, and undertook the restoration of leaded light glass.

Eurocell has supplied more than 500 windows to Cheshire Extra Care, a £200m+ PFI housing scheme – one of the largest of its kind in the UK.

In the heart of Bristol’s City Centre lies The Pithay, now known as Programme. This immense building, originally built in the 1960s was tired and required refurbishment. After being acquired by Resolution Property in 2016 a plan was developed by Buckley Gray Yeoman, based on Resolution’s ambitious brief to revitalise the building. Clement Windows Group was chosen as the preferred company to manufacture and install the 510 new steel windows required. Clement were thrilled to win the job, particularly as the current Chief Executive Peter Clement’s father had installed the original windows back in 1966!

78 St James Street, a very special office refurbishment in the heart of London’s Mayfair, has involved a slew of skilled and experienced contractors to make the Grade II* Victorian building a commercial space fit for 21st century working while retaining the building’s magnificent fabric. Halifax Glass has used Hodgson Sealants’ U9 silicone for sealing the building’s impressive timber window units.  The windows, which are the full height of the storeys on the front façade, required a specialist glazing company to meet the demands of the project. Halifax Glass has many years’ experience in creating architectural glazing solutions and was called in to produce and install the windows at St James Street using Hodgson Silfix U9 Silicone Sealant for the job.  Halifax Glass also used quantities of Hodgson’s Flexistrip, the market-leading load-bearing security glazing strip for installing double glazed units, laminated glass and single glass into windows and doors.

The new build development contained 17 dwellings for social rent, consisting of four one-bedroom flats, nine two-bedroom flats and four three-bedroom flats. The new development is located within an urban densely populated area of London. The 97 windows manufactured and supplied were predominately Optima Flush Tilt and Turn Windows from Profile 22 along with a small number of Optima open-out casement windows too. Optima from Profile 22 is the UK’s leading award-winning commercial window system. Profile 22 Optima Windows deliver the high-quality specifications required.

The conversion of a west London former town hall to include residential accommodation features Crittall windows, carefully designed to preserve the building’s original character. The former Acton Town Hall, in Ealing London Borough, has been partly converted to provide a public library and leisure facilities but the Grade II listed structure also now contains a range of apartments. The building, which dates from 1909, was designed in an Italianate palazzo style, executed in locally made red bricks with Portland-stone dressings.  For the refurbishment and conversion the windows within the original building were replaced with Crittall Corporate W20 profiles.

A 19th century Listed Building, St Paul’s Church, has a prominent position at the top of St John’s Hill in Battersea. Current owners, The James Laurence Group, worked alongside the London Borough of Wandsworth Planning Department to agree how best this historical building should be restored and provided with a new lease of life. Clement were chosen to supply all the steel windows and conservation rooflights. The bespoke demands of the project required Clement to use two steel window ranges. Both W20 and EB24 were fitted to create the beautiful shaped windows which include club heads.

Rose Collection sash windows are often used in traditional heritage properties, but – as this stylish post-war Surrey home shows – they work just as well in more modern buildings.
