Utilising several innovative Glazing Vision rooflight products combined with some insightful architectural design detail from Chiles Evans & Care Architects, along with bespoke high specification finishing from Terry Huggett Developments, this retro-modern home is simply stunning, and even featured on Channel 4's Grand Designs.The 1970’s were a revolutionary period of acceptance and moving forward as a society, with many important social movements being founded in this decorated time. Along with this, the 70’s also had a huge influence on the interior and exterior of buildings all over the world. 70’s vogue has also had a heavy effect on modern interior and exterior design. Ranging from complex designs of wallpapers, to simple yet effective patterns on rugs, retro designs are becoming more and more popular in present times.Solidifying this proposal is Ravine House, a retro-contemporary build where Glazing Vision, Chiles Evans & Care Architects (CE & C Architects) and Terry Huggett Developments have collaborated together demonstrating the enduring quality of 70’s design.The original house, built in 1967, adopted a mid-century American exterior; with large windows looking out at the surrounding gardens that were framed by wide eaves and a low-profile roof. Taking inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright, and other famous Architects from the mid-20th century, the house showcases a real ‘wow factor’. As conversations with the homeowner quickly progressed it became apparent how special this home truly was.The project was separated into three parts. Two stock sized Flushglaze Fixed Rooflights were the first port of call for the homeowner and the architect. It was imperative that any changes made to the original exterior of the house did not impact the simplicity of the roof lines, therefore the Fixed Flushglaze Rooflights were selected.The double pitched roof meant that it was not possible to set the rooflight into the roof pane without compromising the water-proof integrity of the roofing. However, the Flushglaze’s simple frame means that although they sit proud of the roof, they remain visually unobtrusive. The standard Flushglaze Fixed Rooflight is a very popular item in our wide range of products, with a minimum span and width of 400mm and ranging to 4200mm subject to area m2 limitations. In this case, the Flushglaze Fixed Rooflights were both 1200mmx 900mm. With a frame colour of RAL 7015 (Slate Grey), they bring a simple yet highly effective essence to the property. Deciding to purchase a stock size Rooflight, rather than a bespoke size can be a much more cost-effective option.The second part involved a singular stock sized Pitchglaze Roof Window. Adopting our pioneering ‘frameless’ design ethos, once installed, this product provides the building occupants sky only views through the aperture, something not usually found with a traditional roof window without requiring an upstand. As a roof window it is UKCA and CE marked and designed to be installed in pitched tiled roof applications flush with the tiling line and to be used at roof pitches between 15° and 60° and comprising of Qualicoat approved polyester powder coated aluminium framework. The Pitchglaze can also be supplied in either landscape or portrait orientations. In this case, the Roof window sat at a 22° angle with “vision area” dimensions 1000mm x 3000mm.The third part of the project consisted of a solitary Triple Glazed Flushglaze Rooflight, with three Wall Abutments. The homeowner opted to go “made to order” for this luxurious item, with a span of 1205mm x 2825mm. The Wall Abutment detail is part of the Flushglaze framework and is secured using suitable fixings, that depend on the structure being used. The Flushglaze range of Rooflights have been independently performance tested and approved by the British Board of Agrément (BBA) and are also classified by The Official Police security initiative, Secured by Design and tested to LPS2081/1 with certification by the Loss Prevention Certification Board. This helps to enhance resistance to opportunist intruders attempting ‘stealth’ attacks to gain entry, which are often carried out in residential areas.‘For me, this project is simply a once in a lifetime opportunity and I enjoyed every minute of it’ Terry Huggett, Terry Huggett Developments.The project brings with it a unique element of family. With the homeowner inheriting the house from his parents – Terry Huggett cites that his love for mid-century American architecture stemmed from family holidays to places like California, and other cities and states in western America. This connection with the project for both Architect and Contractor, along with their personal chemistry is obvious, as is the care and precision of the build exhibited everywhere within the residence! The home also boasts many different structural qualities that distinguish it from other houses up and down the country. From a heated driveway to a Borehole that provides ‘Evian quality’ water from tap, the home showcases many unique and desired aspects.Overall, the project took approximately three years to be completed. Now, Ravine House is gaining publicity up and down the country and has been nominated for various RIBA awards. It is visually clear that the home is something truly special that simply defines quality and displays an incredibly high level of Architectural and Contractual ability.

The University of Northampton campus is split up into several learning blocks.We were tasked with supplying and installing an acoustic lining system into most of these learning blocks. Areas included: – creative hub, learning hub, research & enterprise hub, as well as the engine shed.Included in the Acoustic Lining package were a multitude of acoustic systems and finishes to create a dynamic yet acoustical stable atmosphere within the campus. A new state-of-the-art business incubation building in Dorset has been completed with the use of an integrated package of Sto thermal insulation and external render and paint products. The company’s StoTherm Vario and StoTherm Classic insulation systems were specified for the new Innovation Studio at the Arts University Bournemouth, along with StoSilco exterior render and StoColor Dryonic façade paint.

Skyfold rises vertically within the ceilng offering valuable floor space saving and operation by simply turning a key.

Over 266m2 of framed panels of Terra-34, which is a grating which conforms to anti-climb guidelines, were made to cover the south, east and west elevations. These were fabricated in 16 different sizes up to 2.5m high and 1m wide and fixed to the structural framework with custom welded plates. Access through the east elevation was provided by a very large double-leaf gate to allow for the removal of large sculptures and installations. The gate was made out of six separate panels within each leaf for an overall size of 4.6x5.3m (hxw).

The ChallengeFailing retaining wall needed to be stabilised and strengthened.The failing masonry wall, to the rear of Latches Close Social Housing, was braced with timber struts and remained like this for 10 years. The ‘temporary’ buttress was effective for a short time but then the wall began to move. The brick retaining wall had fractured at the corner which was a sign it was slowly inching forward. For fear of the wall’s collapse, the surrounding area was cordoned off with heras fencing. For health and safety reasons, the rear of the social housing was completely ‘out of bounds’.The wall couldn’t be taken down and replaced because there was a car sales elevated above. The car sales proprietor did not want his land to be affected. Clarion Housing Group contacted Engie to survey the failing wall and propose a solution. The SolutionSecura Grand was installed under the expert advice of Tobermore’s Civil Engineering Consultants.Engie had previously worked with Tobermore on other schemes and had experience using their Secura Grand Retaining Wall system. Following consultations with Tobermore’s Civil Engineering Consultants, Engie proposed Secura Grand as a solution to strengthen and stabilise the existing wall.Rather than replacing the entire wall, the existing wall and its timber buttress was incorporated into the retaining wall designs. This retaining wall project has restored land for the residents and property managers.

Our installers carried out all necessary remedial work to align the Teaching wall electrical access points to the wrongly positioned sockets on the dado trunking.After successful installation of the Teaching Walls, we were informed by Bridglea PRU that children had been climbing up the side of the Teaching Walls by suspending themselves between the Teaching Wall and the classroom wall–in an attempt to get on top of the Teaching Walls and climb inside the cabinets. Boyco supplied & installed bespoke infill boxes to the corner of the necessary Teaching Walls, to prevent pupils being able to gain any access to the roof of the Teaching Walls.

This housing development required a retaining wall solution but presented challenges in terms of limited space and existing services. Two retaining walls were required at the sides of the entrance to Nicholls Lane housing development. While a Geogrid Reinforced Backfill method was appropriate for the Secura Grand retaining wall on the righthand side of the development, the retaining wall on the left was met with the challenges of limited space and existing services. The highway boundary limited the amount of space available to construct the retaining wall on the left- hand side. The existing services present within the retained soil caused further complexities. On this occasion minimising excavation was crucial due to the services within the retained soil. Efficient use of land was vital as the Secura wall didn’t have the room at the back for geogrid or for no-fines concrete backfill. It was desirable that both walls at the sides of the entrance looked the same despite their different conditions.

Ancon TeploTie, the innovative low thermal conductivity Wall Tie, has been used in the UK’s first retrofit to achieve zero-carbon Level 6 of the Code for Sustainable Homes. TeploTie wall ties are ideal for retrofit projects as they can be resin-fixed into existing walls. The project involved the refurbishment of a semi-detached home, built in the 1840s with solid brick walls. The front elevation is internally insulated to preserve the original brickwork. The U-value of the walls is now 0.11W/mK2, 16 times better than before.

Biotecture’s statement living walls are integral to the architectural look and feel at the McArthurGlen Ashford Designer Outlet. They were designed to enrich the retail experience and strengthen the outlet’s position as a flagship shopping destination. Working collaboratively with the design team and the main contractor, Biotecture designed and installed over 2,000 sqm of living wall to create a rich vertical garden. The green walls help establish a sense of place, and reflect Kent’s status as ‘The Garden of England’. The project is one of Europe’s largest living walls and demonstrates how living walls can be delivered at scale to enhance the urban environment.

Green Park Station provides access to the Jubilee, Piccadilly and Victoria Lines. The £60 million refurbishment to achieve step-free access included a copper canopy, a Portland stone entrance and a ramp from the ticket hall into the Park featuring green wall screening. Lang+Fulton designed and supplied 300sqm of panels to clad the raked inner facade of both retaining walls and the tapered wall-heads, which would support the green wall planting. The panels were made to custom sizes from Terra-34 grating and fixed with varying lengths of bracket to accommodate the stepped areas in the walls.

ChallengeThe boundary between adjoining properties has always been assumed to be an area of neutral heat loss. However, research undertaken by Leeds Metropolitan University, MIMA (the Mineral Wool Insulation Manufacturers’ Trade Association), BRE (Building Research Establishment) and Knauf Insulation has revealed that a significant amount of heat is actually lost through uninsulated cavity party walls.It is estimated that there are 7.4million existing party walls that have been built with a cavity across the UK.Although these walls provide fire and acoustic separation to meet the requirements of relevant building regulations, the thermal performance of a party wall had not previously been considered.Knauf Insulation has provided solid evidence that its Supafil® Party Wall glass mineral wool blowing insulation is a reliable way of eliminating party wall bypass and so City West Housing Trust, a Salford based housing association, has installed the product as part of a pilot scheme to a number of its properties.Working alongside Bridgewater Surveyors and others, City West wanted to improve the energy efficiency of their tenants' properties and are continually looking for other ways to reduce energy costs and consumption. Knowing that by insulating the cavity party walls of properties could lower energy bills for their tenants they embarked on the trial project – with the aim of a possible roll out across other areas in the North West.After approaching Knauf Insulation for advice, City West and Bridgewater Surveyors settled on a reliable solution: Knauf Insulation’s Supafil® Party Wall insulation.SolutionSupafil® Party Wall prevents heat loss through party separating cavity walls by fully filling the cavity. The reduction in the heat loss was equivalent to an improvement in the effective U-value of the party wall of at least 0.5 W/m2K. Working with architects, CMI Workplace and main contractor, Overbury, Style was specified to install a fully automatic Dorma Moveo Glazed ComfortDrive moveable wall adjacent to a Skyfold, the fully automatic, vertically rising operable wall, housed in the ceiling cavity. At the push of a button, the walls open and close with ease, offering a phenomenal lab tested 50dB Rw acoustic integrity for the glass system, and 51dB Rw for the Skyfold.

The refurbishment of 30 Panton Street has created an outstanding mixed-use development in London. In the entrance hall, full height dark umber anodised wall panels stand out against the polished stone walls and floors. Guiding visitors to upper floors, the aluminium panels have unique integrated lighting strips adding a warm glow to the foyer. Over the office security gates, pale umber anodised SAS200 leads visitors to the stairs, lifts and upper levels. Both the wall panels and ceiling system have a flush, concealed grid echoing the clean lines of the stone wall and floor panels.

Waterproofing of the retaining wall for the youth hostel, the lifts pits, the basement slab and walls that would be the shop and the suspended roof slabs that are stepped over three levels across the entire building.

Designed throughout for adaptability, space at the new Emily Wilding Davison building, Royal Holloway University, benefits from the installation of numerous moveable wall systems. Partitioning experts Style, worked closely with contractor, Geoffrey Osbourne, and Associated Architects to assist and advise on the design, bringing practical, aesthetic and cost-saving benefits to the project. Linea23 is an architectural residential project designed by Studio Sigurtà in Desenzano del Garda, for which various Atlas Concorde porcelain tiles were chosen for the creation of ventilated walls, outdoor floors and walls.The Trust and Studio ceramic collections are the protagonists of the project and outer facades were covered using ventilated walls in which ceramic tiles create a gap that facilitates the circulation of air. Castell High School in Flintshire supplies co-education to 1300+ students promoting strong levels of well-being.The original school building was established in 1958 and as the student intake grew extensions were built in 1974 and 1992 to accommodate.2021 saw the latest extension, Y Celtec building, completed. In January 2008, the Devon Partnership NHS Foundation Trust approved plans for a major redevelopment of the Langdon Hospital site based in Dawlish. RCM were appointed by the NHS to provide the Renderflex building board – a high performance cellulose fibre cement render carrier board and Y-Wall – a calcium silicate board on the inner leaf of the wall construction. The client specified robust walls in all areas, especially within the patient wards, which made RCM’s boards ideal for the project.

As one of the pioneers of remote working solutions, Citrix recently chose to reconfigure their offices, taking on an additional space at the Cambridge Science Park. Aiming to create an environment that would facilitate engagement, creativity and productivity, moveable wall specialists, Style worked closely with architect, Gensler, and contractor, Area Sq, to offer intensely flexible workspace.Delivering exceptional acoustic ratings of 55dB and 52dB respectively, Style installed two Dorma Hüppe Variflex solid moveable walls and a single Variflex glass moveable wall, allowing Citrix staff to section off a meeting area from the main hall and then further sub-divide the space as required. Contributing to the vibrant new décor, all walls feature black RAL 9005 profiles and dry wipe magnetic boards to encourage brainstorming. Cambridge Science Park has been home to the UK Citrix Research and Development team for over a decade. Having occupied approx. 30,000 sq ft of space on the first floor, Citrix was keen to refurbish their existing workplace as well as expand operations by taking over additional space on the ground floor.Reflecting the Citrix vision and culture, the new layout and design maximises the potential of the space, allowing staff to establish new ways of collaborating.When all three walls are in place, three smaller meeting rooms are created. Alternatively, a combination of one large and one small meeting room can be formed, or just one very large space using just the glass moveable wall. The entire space can also be opened-up into one large open plan area. “This is an excellent example of how a combination of glass and solid moveable walls can create really adaptable office space,” said Steve Williams, sales director for Style Midlands.“Thanks to the inclusion of three pass doors, access is simplified and also allows the glass wall to be left in place for extended periods if desired, creating a more permanent space. “However, due to the semi-automatic operation of these operable walls, they can be opened up extremely quickly so that the entire space can be reconfigured for different vents throughout the day.” 

DG Timber Solutions, specialist designers and manufacturers of timber frame construction were awarded the contract to build the structure’s wall panels in the factory and install on-site, with the objective of achieving an overall wall U-value of 0.20W/m²K.
