Stainless Steel Pedestrian Grating at Chelsea Bridge


Lang+Fulton were approached by the architects to propose the most suitable stainless steel grating for pedestrian use at the new Vista apartments, close to Chelsea Bridge. The gratings were also required to safely secure the structural openings that ventilated the underground car park. A grating with a heel proof mesh of 55x11mm was recommended and was designed with support beams and anchor bolts. The stainless steel was pickled and polished.

60 Fly Screens for a Hotel

In 2016 we were contacted by a large hotel to come up with a cost effective way of screening 60 windows to prevent insects from entering the building. We decided the box screen would be perfect as it offers ventilation and does not restrict the window from opening fully. The fitting took 3 days, the customer was happy and the screens are still as sturdy today as they were 2 years ago!

The redevelopment of a corner site at Old Street / Silicon Roundabout included a tower and low-rise buildings. The end elevations carried large steel ventilation ducts which were to be clad in brickwork to replicate the appearance of the wet laid facades. To ensure safety and retention of the cladding over the building design life, the ducts were clad in the SafeSecure® system using slips cut from the same brick type.

Kings Hill Primary School is an early 19th Century building. The old roof slates were flaking due to frost damage with many slipped / lost slates needing replacing.


IKOslate was chosen by the client (Walsall MBC) as a low weight, cost effective alternative. The products CO2 credentials were also a key factor. During the installation IKO Rubershield Pro and IKO Armourvent were also installed to provide cross flow ventilation, and IKO’s lead substitute IKOflash was installed in the valleys and for flashing the chimneys. The steep pitch of the roof provided the contractor with a challenge particularly with the cold damp Autumn mornings.

4 Building Regulations you need to know about before installing a smoke vent

Trade Access Panels

There are a lot of different official documents about the rules and regulation around fire safety and smoke ventilation, which, in turn, influence the way you should choose and install your AOVs. Building regulations are minimum standards that apply to almost all new residential and commercial buildings, and also alterations to the existing ones. If you are planning to use an Automatic Opening Smoke Vent (AOV) System in your project, you will have to comply with the regulations mentioned.

Underfloor air conditioning was specified by The Brinkfell Partnership for the sixth form common room and study area located on the 2nd floor of the new wing extension, Bridge Studios. The ventilation system was to provide low energy comfort cooling with high levels of fresh air to the communal space. The consultant opted for a flexible system which would satisfy both high and transient occupancy levels which could adapt to future change of use within the space.

Two versions of Kawneer’s AA®100 curtain walling – mullion-drained capped and SSG (Structurally Silicone Glazed) - were used on One Canal Parade in Cardiff city centre. These were complemented by Kawneer’s AA®540 fixed lights, AA®720 bottom-hung, outward-opening vents for smoke ventilation, series 190 heavy-duty commercial entrance doors and aerofoil caps integrated into a Brise Soleil system.

The first homes at Barratt Homes’ new energy efficient Hanham Hall development feature Posi-Joists as the floor system of choice. Each home is constructed using highly insulated materials and is fitted with a Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) system, which is why Posi-Joist was the natural choice for the floor system. Kingspan Potton have been involved throughout the design and delivery of the project, supplying both Structural Insulated Panels and the Posi-Joist floors.

The intricate facade on Garden Halls was inspired by the existing large-scale Victorian and Edwardian buildings that populate Bloomsbury, such as the Russell Square Hotel and Victoria House. The windows employ a very thin profile section, achieved with Reynaers CS 38-SL systems, and have a decorated, perforated aluminium screen to the side. This uses an insulated panel that can be opened from the inside for ventilation. The lower level screens are bronze-coloured anodised aluminium, while the upper screens are powder coated.

When the existing bitumen roof at East Preston Infant School came to the end of its service life, naturally the decision was made to replace the existing roof and upgrade the rooflights. Kingspan Light + Air introduced 23 Kingspan Classic Skylight Domes into the building enabling the school to embrace natural light, ventilation and smoke management performance benefits.

STEREO-KINETIC wall cladding transforms refurbished car park at Festival Square, Basingstoke


Investment in the infrastructure at Festival Place shopping centre in Basingstoke has included the refurbishment and extension of the 3,000 space car park. Lang+Fulton worked with Bell Associates to design a new façade using their STEREO-KINETIC wall cladding. The panels were mounted on to an independent steel frame which was bolted back to the existing structural steelwork. The gradation of the stainless steel tiles was designed to allow for ventilation whilst transforming the appearance of the original car park and linking it to the new extension with one seamless frontage.

Here East - Broadcast Centre

The design of the Here East Broadcast Centre in London promotes visibility between all areas of the building, whilst paying particular attention to the quality and performance of acoustics, ventilation, lighting and thermal performance. Each unitised cladding panel features two panes of heat strengthened laminate glazing, comprising a total eight laminate sheets. The ceramic frit is printed on the external sheet’s inner surface, and a layer of solar coating – to reduce solar gain and improve the performance of the glass – is applied to surface four.

The striking contemporary design featuring large structural slabs that project beyond the facade outline to provide solar shading, large floor plates and a central atrium enhancing the natural ventilation. Consultants BDSP estimate that a 30% reduction in active cooling is achievable by employing the sustainable design.

SonaSpray controls sound reverberation in buildings by absorbing sound energy instead of reflecting it, thereby reducing overall noise levels. It can also assist in condensation & humidity control when accompanied by adequate ventilation by absorbing large amounts of water vapour and then releasing it when humidity levels drop, promoting a balanced atmosphere.

The ventilation system was to provide low energy comfort cooling with high levels of fresh air to the mixed-use space. The client preferred a flexible system which would satisfy both high and transient occupancy levels and adapt to future change of use within the space.

Originally used during Victorian and Edwardian period as sewer vents or "stench flaps", these cast iron vents with 100mm round spigots are making a bit of a come back. We've replaced the flaps (that used to allow air in but not out) with mesh so air flows freely in both directions and they've become quite a hit with specifiers ventilating basements and cellars and new builds. Car Park Two at Chesapeake

HAVER Architectural Woven Wire Mesh

A car park that no longer looks like a typical car park. Façade cladding with the Architectural Woven Wire Mesh LARGO-PLENUS 2022. Although the wire mesh facade disguises the building on the outside, from the inside it still provides a high degree of transparency when looking out. With an open area of only 25%, the stainless steel wire mesh is still open enough to be able to recognize buildings, natural elements and people outside of the garage. At the same time it provides adequate airflow to allow for natural ventilation.

Birmingham Collaborative Teaching Laboratory, Birmingham University

1400 sqm of the unique Sotech Optima Shingle System has been used on the Collaborative Teaching Laboratory, Birmingham University. The shingles were Anodised Regency Gold 2, 2.5 & 3, the finish was selected to create a scaled texture, which can be seen in the project photography. This stunning façade had to be flexible enough to accommodate the practical demands of a modern building. Due to a requirement to ventilate the high level plantroom, the shingles in this area were perforated and fixed to a bespoke support grid, which integrates seamlessly with the surrounding cladding.

Glenpark Early Years Centre

Glenpark provides 100 places for 3-4 year olds and eligible two-year olds around the Greenock area, west of Glasgow. A commitment by the Scottish Government to increase free early learning and childcare hours available in Scotland from 600 to 1,140 per year by 2020 proved to be the catalyst for creating this inspiring development Holmes Miller Architects had to ensure that both children and staff could access the benefits of natural light and ventilation, whilst identifying an easy mechanism to control glare and provide shade.

Rendered rainscreen remedial for timber frame

This timber frame house with badly cracked render was saved from damp and cold with ProWall seamless rendered rainscreen. The lightweight ProWall system replaced the failed render, keeping the traditional rendered look and giving a watertight, breathable facade. The existing render varied from 30mm to 60mm, and was embedded with expanded metal lathing (EML). The repetitve expansion and contraction of the EML had cracked the render around it. After removing the old render ProWall rainscreen was installed. This included new battening, an advanced render carrier board, and ventilation beads under the soffits and at the base.

The Cutty Sark, London

Howe Green

Over 50 Howe Green 7500 Series access covers were made to order for one of London’s popular tourist attractions - The Cutty Sark, as part of an extensive refurbishment project. The aluminium covers were manufactured with bespoke Z-section supports to provide a safe, reliable route to essential ventilation ducting used to keep air circulating in what is effectively a large void under the historic clipper. The covers were fitted into raised flooring within the new museum facility. The 7500 Series are designed to withstand high levels of pedestrian traffic.
