Volksbank Kleverland’s new customer centre is an eye-catching architectural masterpiece. The interior of the bank office consisted of curved and tapering shapes. This required bendable railings and a flexible solution for alignment of the glass infills. A combination of Q-railing’s Easy Glass Slim and Easy Glass Pro glass balustrade systems was the perfect fit. Easy Glass Slim had previously been installed with a bend radius of less than 500 mm, which is unique in the market. In total, more than 130 metres of glass railing was installed on the upper floors and stairways.

Principal Contractor, Mace Group, appointed Newton Specialist Contractor Cast Contracting Ltd (CCL) to design and install the waterproofing to the Marshall Building of the London School of Economics. CCL recommended the Type C Newton CDM System as it is the safest and most reliable form of waterproofing. CCL prepared the extensive two-storey basement with Newton 906 Lime Inhibtor and Newton 103-S before installing over 2,250m2 of Newton 520 eco membrane to the floor and over 570m2 of Newton 508 membrane to create the Newton CDM System.
The Gateway Student Accommodation
Profile 22 Systems
Nearly 600 PVC-U tilt-turn windows in the Profile 22 system were chosen for The Gateway, a £22million student accommodation in Lincoln.
The tilt-turn windows were fabricated by Profile 22’s Approved Window Contractor, Polar Windows, using the fully chamfered system, foiled with smooth finish RAL 7016 Anthracite grey as a special order to colour match the aluminium design scheme.
The work was carried out in line with strict deadlines, and the project was completed in good time ready for the beginning of the academic year.

The office floors were lit with the linear lighting system Lopen, which perfectly lends itself to custom length solutions. For the breakout spaces, the circular suspended fitting Talla was used in combination with the soft square suspended profile Tarras bringing a visual interest into space and creating an area with a different light distribution.

This wonderful grade II listed building on the Strand, London is the former home of the BBC World Service, and now serves as a beautiful conference space for Kings College London.
Audience Systems’ retractable seating system includes high specification Espace 628 chairs, with pocket sprung seats for outstanding comfort, solid oak armrests and high backrests.
The retractable seating includes two “partial opening” positions for added flexibility, special carpet and elegantly trimmed steps with special nosing and LED aisle lighting.
It’s a fitting level of finish for a building with an exceptionally distinguished history.

Audience Systems’ local representative worked closely with Theatre Consultants Collaborative to design this multipurpose space.
The seating is both practical and elegant, toning with the historic interior of the building.

Swindon Station is back on track with Ultrascape's Mortar Paving System

Ultrascape's BS 7533 compliant mortar paving system has been used to deliver a modern and stylish forecourt outside Swindon railway station.
The redevelopment has transformed what was previously a heavy traffic dominated area, into a prestigious pedestrian focused arrival space which features seating, planting, lighting and a millennium clock.
Work was carried out by specialist civil engineering contractor, Britannia Construction and included the installation of 500 tonnes of high quality natural granite and Pennant Sandstone using Ultrascape's Pro-Bed HS fine bedding concrete, Flowpoint rapid setting grout and Pro-Prime slurry primer.

The Attenborough Centre is an busy multipurpose space hosting up to eight events each week. Within its unique circular auditorium, Audience Systems' Airstages have been used to create a height-adjustable floor which can be flat, or can be tiered in a number of different configurations. The labour-saving hydraulic Airstage modules are unlocked and smoothly lowered from the top using removable handles.

Waterproofing an Air Traffic Control Tower, Scotland

Heavy rainfall on the Orkney Islands meant that the basement room of Kirkwall Air Traffic Control Tower suffered from frequent flooding, with water levels reaching 1.2m at their highest point. Newton Waterproofing and Specialist Contractor Wise Basement Systems were called in to remove the existing water and then waterproof the structure to protect it from future flooding, all in just one week.
Combining a Range of IKO Roofing Waterproofing Systems to Refurbish a School Roof

The existing waterproofing had failed due to a previous poor installation, the result of which saturated the insulation below the exterior roofing. New high performance solutions were specified that included a range of IKO roofing waterproofing systems to protect both the flat and pitched roofing areas of the building.
IKOslate, a robust and durable tile was specified for the pitched roof due to vandalism and the fragility of the current system, whereas a tapered scheme was required for the flat roofing - IKO Ultra Prevent alongside a cold applied liquid solution (IKO Polimar) for the more intricate details.

The Enterprise Lab at Imperial College, London, benefits from the installation of a DORMA Variflex moveable wall system, allowing the room to be divided into a breakout area and workspace. Partitioning experts, Style was closely involved during the design stage of this project as the basement room is located at the bottom of a tight staircase, causing access issues. “We recommended Variflex as it is such a flexible and adaptable system,” said Julian Sargent, Style’s group managing director. “Most importantly, the panel faces are manufactured separately from the frames, allowing each element to be manually manoeuvred down the stairs”.

Alongside the building is a multi-use games area for staff to use during their lunch breaks and after work, all set in new landscaped surrounds. Overlooking the pitch is two-tiered gabion linear wall structure that provides an elevated position. Although simple to construct and attractive features in their own right, gabions aren’t particularly comfortable to sit on, but the addition of Furnitubes’ Lapa benches readily converts the wall into useful seating provision. 16 Lapa benches were supplied in total, providing seating capacity for around 50 people.

The property line construction between two existing buildings meant that there was a requirement for waterproofing both new and existing structural elements, including pile caps, underpinning, a new reinforced concrete slab, the existing foundations, and also existing vaulted areas at the front of the building which extend below New Bond Street.

Overheating library is no sweat for Dearnleys

Visitors to Horsforth Library in Leeds were having difficulty using the computers due to too much glare. In addition, in the summer the solar gain through the roof glazing was making the library uncomfortably hot.
Dearnleys proposed the Astralux 6000 louvre blind system which is ideal for sloping glazing as the slats are securely held on rack arms. These arms allow the slats to be tilted to control light and glare. At this site the blinds were operated by a detachable crank handle but motorisation is also available.

The Clifton Campus at Nottingham Trent University has recently undergone a major investment programme to enhance the facilities for the 8,000 students who are based at this site.
Part of this multi-million pound spend was the creation of The Pavilion, a space for students to meet and study with full height glazing flooding the space with light.
To help control light and glare the lower sections of the curtain walling were shaded by Dearnleys using the Astralux 3000 roller system. These blinds were fitted with screen fabric with a 1% openness.
Waterproofing Historic Leaking Vaults at Imperial College, London

As part of their ongoing relationship with the Imperial College London, Newton Specialist Contractor A.P. Gooch was tasked with assessing and waterproofing 11 historic Victorian brick vaults beneath the streets of Kensington, London, after the existing competitor ‘waterproof render’ had failed.
Following a full assessment of the vaults, A.P. Gooch decided that the best option was to install the tried and tested ‘failsafe’ Newton System 500 cavity drainage membrane solution in order to depressurise, capture and safely manage ingressing water away from the building.
Creating a New Community Centre, North London

When a listed commercial basement in Temple Fortune was being transformed into a new community centre, Newton Specialist Contractor Arti Construction undertook the waterproofing. The basement is part of a four-storey Listed building that was built into the hillside, meaning three of the walls were either fully or partially below-ground and suffering from water penetration. Arti recommended the Newton CDM System, as it is the most safe and reliable form of waterproofing that would deliver a completely dry internal space and cause the minimal amount of disruption to the Listed structure.

Newry Town Hall's seating was replaced as part of the second phase of a major refurbishment. The Espace 628 seats offer outstanding comfort as well as a high-specification look. The stalls chairs are deployed on “Matrix” removable floorbars – the whole system is completely removable with no need for floor fixings, and can be stacked on trolleys. Matching tread fixed seats are installed on the balcony.
