Television Centre in Shepherds Bush, West London, is the iconic former BBC HQ that was opened in 1960. Architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris and developers Stanhope have now created a multi-media environment that includes apartments, offices, studios, hotels, restaurants and retail, all based around the famous crescents that defined the original complex. DRU Metro 100XT/2 designer gas fires were specified for a selection of the apartments and were installed by DRU dealers Victoria Stone of Tunbridge Wells. They utilise the exclusive DRU PowerVent system, which enables the fires to be installed in apartment complexes and other challenging locations.

This historic landmark required revitalising to enhance its appearance whilst maximising floor space within the existing retained Grade 2 listed facade. This project required a flexible yet robust structural waterproofing design supported by the appropriate warranties. FIS were able to provide a strategy within the budget constraints exceeding the clients requirements whilst ensuring practicability of installation. The waterproof layer beneath the basement slab incorporated a combination of a bentonite membrane and a cementitous coating to the top of the piles caps providing full protection. This deep basement construction required a maintainable cavity drain system applied to the secant piled walls.

Winchmore School has completed a washroom refit specifying Franke’s Uridan waterless urinal pods. The Uridan system is available exclusively through Franke Sissons in the UK and Ireland and is manufactured from glass reinforced plastic which is far more resilient than ceramic and provides reassuring security against vandalism. Adrian Bailey, Facilities Manager at Winchmore School explained, “We wanted a waterless solution to reduce water use and maintenance costs. There are other water-free products available for this type of installation but we wanted assurance it would stand the wear and tear of secondary school pupils and be completely odour free.”

Furnitubes’ designers worked closely with landscape architects LDA Design to develop a system of steel components that included a skeletal sub-frame, solid plate backing panels and contrasting bronze-colour outer screens with a cut-out pattern. Furnitubes undertook the full detailed design, also coordinating with structural engineering consultants in the process, manufactured the entire steelwork structure and also completed all on-site installation of the 15 outer panels and sub-structures. Other improvements at the site include new granite paving and an impressive large scale floral artwork above the new screens, on the façade of the 3-storey car park.

St Matthew’s estate in Brixton was a grey, crime ridden housing development constructed in the late 1960’s when two social landlords were brought on board by Lambeth council to remodel the estate. The redevelopment included 12 new zero energy homes for shared ownership which went on to win the Low Energy Building of the Year Awards in 2006. Bereco manufactured the energy efficient timber tilt and turn windows and patio doors for the new homes and were designed with top specification 24mm glazing systems to give optimal energy performance, without, the zero energy rating would not have been achieved.

The new £34 million super school in Wales, BriggsAmasco installed a complete roof system comprising steel deck, high performance PIR insulation, single ply membrane and mono-pitch rooflights that will help to create an energy self-sufficient school. Built by Willmott Dixon for Ceredigion Council, the 11,200m2 facility merges five schools – Ysgol Dyffryn Teifi, Aberbanc, Coedybryn, Llandysul, and Pontsian – to form the county’s second ‘all-through’ school. Set to accommodate 1,000 primary and secondary pupils, it incorporates many sustainable features including photovoltaic panels, and will use natural light and ventilation to minimise energy use and running costs.

‘Change of use’ for 18th century building - The challenge for ‘change of use’ was to fully comply with Building Regulations, including sound testing between ‘units’ for a property dated circa 1870. Our technical team designed a Part E compliant floating floor system – comprising acoustic membrane over the existing floor with IsoBase for a resilient layer, floated chipboard on top, fire-safe acoustic mineral wool between joists, and layers of acoustic plasterboard on resilient bars on the ceiling below. “All four flats exceeded the minimum and maximum sound insulation requirements for separating floors in conversions using your design…the inspector was impressed!”

Garland were contacted to conduct a full roof survey of the existing roof system at Wheelock Primary School in Cheshire, which over recent years had begun to show its age. Multiple repairs had been made to failing areas including joints and details. This led to internal leakages which started to disrupt the day to day running of the school. The main issues were around roof light kerbs where the felt had failed on the upstand, allowing ingress through the roof light seals and fixings. Three core Axter waterproofing systems were chosen: Wilotekt Plus hot melt, Ecoflex single ply and Starcoat liquid membranes. Throughout, Axter's technical and QA departments and approved Axtershield installer ensured that the highest industry standards were applied and requirements of third party building insurers complied with.

The facility based at Milton Keynes University Hospital, Eaglestone, Buckinghamshire is designed to bring more complex treatments for cancer patients, such as co-locating oncology, clinical haematology and chemotherapy programmes, under one roof. BriggsAmaso’s teams worked to deliver the building’s new roof roofing on behalf of client ADMK Ltd. Briggs deployed two sets of four operatives on site – four specialist operatives working on hotmelt; four specialist operatives working Armourplan single-ply – to ensure work was completed to deadline

A total of nine blocks make up the development, containing 396 residential units, commercial and cultural spaces, a single storey basement area and a 20 storey residential tower block with roof top area. Buzon UK were commissioned by Maylim to supply DPH5 and BC5 adjustable pedestals, which were used across the entire project to support numerous decking areas, fencing, step and riser units and a wide range of bespoke seating. The random shaped pavers required a complex spacer tab layout, achieved effortlessly with the unique BC System.

Rackine after successfully tendering, designed, manufactured and installed a truly bespoke storage solution. The design incorporated nearly 7000 drawers in six different sizes to house everything from dress fabrics to religious robes, handbags to walking sticks, and embroidery to underwear, hanging garment storage, locations for 1280 large rolled textiles up to 6 metres long and twice as many small rolled objects. The solution required a light weight system to be designed which still needed to have the capability to be almost 4 metres tall, up to 1.6 metres deep and accommodate drawers up to 2 metres wide.

Architect Hawkins\Brown specified Howe Green 7500 Series Medium Duty Stainless Steel Floor Access Covers for one of the office spaces within BT Sport located at Here East, the new digital quarter for East London. The covers were required to address the challenge of easily and safely accessing drainage junctions located beneath a raised floor system in the corridors of the building. The 7500 Series were specified with stainless steel Z profiles to provide additional support to the access cover within the raised floor. The access covers were initially covered with plywood and then infilled with a vinyl flooring finish.

24-25 Grosvenor Street in Mayfair offers high-quality office space. Having been completely reconstructed behind its imposing double fronted period façade in the 1980’s, the building underwent a major back-to-frame refurbishment in 2018 to modernise the space. With two entrances to work with, the contractor needed a high-quality entrance matting system that would befit its location, whilst also providing superior performance from a relatively small area of matting. Two bespoke entrance designs were created to complement the aesthetics using INTRAdisc bronze capsules and INTRAform Double Module cut directly into the ceramic flooring.

Over 12,500m2 of Kingspan access flooring is being installed in new civic headquarters and customer service centre for York Council on the site of a grade 2 listed former railway station within the historic city walls. Northern Access Floors Director Steve Robson said: “The flooring in the redeveloped area is installed over listed floorboards, so a low cost, fit-for-purpose flooring system was required, Kingspan’s particleboard panels met those needs perfectly. The new build element of the project will have much more usage and the panels will be installed on concrete, so steel-encapsulated panels were specified.”

Murchison House, received a significant refurbishment, giving the University of Edinburgh a new purpose-designed venue. Reconfigured to provide light-filled, comfortable spaces for students and staff, architects Reiach & Hall specified Knauf AMF Heradesign for a first-class acoustic solution aligning with the university’s contemporary design brief. A suspended raft system in the café and breakout area was created using Heradesign. Cut to create triangular rafts, the floating ceiling solution offered the illusion of height and provides excellent acoustic performance. In the study areas, 100m2 of Heradesign wall absorbers were installed throughout the study zones continuing the geometric theme.

An £8m administrative hub at Bristol Airport has a bespoke Knauf AMF ceiling system fitted throughout. A visually intricate honeycomb effect ceiling required the meticulous installation of suspended hexagonal acoustic rafts with precise spacing. A bespoke Donn grid ensured each Topiq Sonic Raft was positioned equidistant to each other. Stride Treglown Associate Architects commented, “The internal aesthetic is an honest expression of the steel structure and exposed services installation. However, these two factors require careful acoustic consideration. The result is a series of randomly arranged, hexagonal suspended rafts that provide acoustic function, and a strong visual statement.”

The Outdoor Deck Company were specified to install high grade FSC Iroko timber decking to the large roof terrace area creating a stunning relaxation space. All decking and paving was installed on the Buzon pedestal support system and the wooden decking area was fitted with anti-slip strips to create an instant non-slip surface. The curved contrast between the paving and decking creates a soft visual appearance and takes you to different areas around the gardens. The entrance steps and risers made from Iroko premium grade hardwood include non-slip strips along the front edge of the steps.

As a Santander approved supplier, Planet was approached directly to specify internal glass partitions and glass doors for the refurbishment of its UK headquarters. Working with Marks Barfield Architects and main contractor Bluu, the project required a premium finish and high sound attenuation levels. Planet 100DG partitioning with single and double Sonotec doors were installed in all the VIP meeting rooms and tech panels were fitted to accommodate electronic room booking systems. Added privacy was ensured with three-quarter-high switchable glass division panels. FireTec doors on the ground floor help meet the building’s strict fire strategy requirements.

Bespoke Construction asked Planet to undertake the internal partitioning package for Brioche Pasquier.To meet the brief, Planet used its premium and highly flexible M100 modular system. The majority of the corridor partitioning was frameless, but with framed modular glazing to clearly define the offices, meeting rooms and testing facilities opposite. The installation achieved excellent sound attenuation for all office and meeting rooms, with film manifestation added for visual contrast and integrated venetian blinds for extra privacy. Single glazed glass doors with brushed steel handles and joints now feature throughout the building. The project took around eight weeks to complete.

Hawkins Brown approached Planet for help with a Category-B fit-out of the Dean’s office and the design of offices and meeting rooms at the University of Westminster. For the meeting room frontages, Planet used p54 demountable glazing system with a narrow profile that meets the required acoustic performance at 45 dB Rw. Doors also required high acoustic performance – 40 dB Rw – so Planet provided its market-leading SonoTec acoustic glazed doors, incorporating a slim, sealed metal surround with double-glazed panels. Black steel door frameworks ensure a striking and seamless look between the partitioning and doors.

St. Elmo is a newly built private residence located in Epsom, London. The architects contacted Q-railing to inquire about a glass railing that would allow maximum light into the master bedroom and enable uninterrupted views of the garden. Q-railing recommended a fascia mount balustrade on the balcony using its Easy Glass MOD 0747 stand-off railing system and a 40 x 40 mm cap rail. The internal staircase is equipped with Q-railing’s 42.4 mm stainless handrails and MOD 0148 off-set stainless brackets. Outside, the elegant Easy Glass Pro glass balustrade was installed.

Award-winning architect Nick Lacey specified Recticel Insulation's L-Ments pitched roof insulated panel system on his new dwelling in the New Forest. He commented: “The roof’s prefabricated element was key to its specification as I urgently needed to speed-up building works on this project. L-Ments is built for rapid installation as well as containing all the necessary thermal properties to ensure the house meets the near-zero carbon standard.” Resulting from the positive collaboration on the roof design, Mr. Lacey switched the specification for floor, framed wall and cavity wall insulation to Recticel products.

REHAU Polytec 50 uses a conventional transom/mullion construction with box steel stick sections faced internally with PVC profile and externally with aluminium, was specified by Cooley Architects. Alongside the curtain walling, SEH also installed more than 130 windows in the 34 apartments in the Greenlaw Court block fabricated in the flush fitting REHAU TOTAL70R fully reversible window system. These replaced the original steel windows from the 1960s, replicating the overall appearance and opening options but offering the block’s residents improved thermal performance, better acoustics and greater security. SAS810 Tricell was installed in the break-out area contributing to the sleek and intelligent design. Further floors were completed in early 2019 which introduced SAS330 Mesh in 12 meeting rooms. This striking people-centric office space has won the Fit Out of Workplace Award at the BCO Awards.

Working with P&HS Architects and Wildgoose Construction, partitioning experts Style installed two manually operated Dorma Hüppe Variflex ML100 moveable wall systems, allowing the area to be quickly divided into up to three small rooms, as required. This capital investment will deliver a good return in the long run, saving money by accommodating several meetings at one time, avoiding the need to hire external training rooms or to pay for staff to travel to other medical centres.

The Varitrans has been independently impact/pressure tested and works in tandem with externally installed louvred panels to provide free air space to residents of high-rise developments where wind and air pressure are at their strongest.
