Deaconess House, a former hospital, dates back to 1894 and the new development retains the frontage of the original building, with a modern construction to the rear. Given the building’s proximity to Holyrood Park, the planning conditions specified the use of indigenous stone for all paving on the project from within 20 miles of the site. However, when the contractor researched the options it was recognised that this was impractical and that Brett Landscaping's Piatto range would provide an equally effective solution to the project’s needs. The design required the car park to look as natural as possible but to withstand the manoeuvring of large delivery vehicles. ABG offered a re-engineered solution showing that a porous type 3 attenuation stone over the whole car park removed the need for expensive attenuation tanks. The main car park was covered in Sudspave interlocking pavers coloured to match the gravel. Truckcell was used for the turning area and filled with the same gravel for a natural finish.
