Formerly known as the Ramada Hatfield, the Comet’s multimillion pound refurbishment which began in 2017 is now complete. The hotel had retained the building’s original crittal sash windows but this did not provide the required level of noise insulation to a number of the guestrooms, restaurant and function spaces for meetings and networking events. St Albans based Selectaglaze installed 104 secondary glazed units, with a cavity between the primary windows and the secondary units to improve noise insulation.

The Star House

The Star House

Cupa Pizarras

The Star House owes its name to its owner’s house guest, who after having the opportunity to experience the architecture, compared its shape to a star. The project made a great impression on him, so much so, he later asked the architects responsible for the Star House to design one especially for him. The association made by the house guest is justified – the house consists of three volumes, placed radially to one another at different angles. It provides an interesting and rare opportunity to see the exterior facade of the house from the inside.

ASF Bespoke Waterfront Railings, Birkenhead

ASF Bespoke Waterfront Railings, Birkenhead

Architectural Street Furnishings part of WB White Foundry

This long run of railings brought with it a number of manufacturing challenges and techniques. They needed to be curved in profile so they form a quayside post, curving and leaning inwards so they do not make a 'natural ladder' beside the water. The panels themselves are manufactured in mild steel, finished galvanised and then painted in satin finished graphite grey. The top rails are of a contrasting polished finished grade 316 stainless steel, finished satin brushed. The run of railings has a combination of straight and curved panels, meaning each individual horizontal infill bar needed to be curved individually.

Modular seating for University of Leicester, Brookfield Campus

Furnitubes International Ltd

Brookfield is a recent acquisition that the University of Leicester is developing to offer supplementary and upgraded teaching facilities and office accommodation for support staff. When selecting seating for the scheme, landscape architects Barry Chinn Associates truly embraced the modular concept of RailRoad, so much so that the setting out of the perimeter planting beds was dictated by the seating sizes. Three separate seats were supplied, each comprising different radii modules that introduce a refreshing informality to the courtyard. The seating is further enhanced by the addition and informal placement of backrests, armrests and tablet surfaces.

There is no separate stair nose piece as the top layer of solid Oak is a good 4mm thick and this allows the fitters to create an accurate mitre join.
