The existing factory finish to this metal roof was degraded and failing in multiple places. The roof was cleaned and all existing GRP roof lights were replaced. Cut edge corrosion & spot rust was treated using Liquasil corrosion primer. An initial coat of Metalseal 20 was roller applied to all corrosion treated areas, followed by a single coat of Metalseal 20, spray applied to the entire roof area. The end result looks like a new roof and will easily provide 20 years protective, water resistant finish to this once poor roof.

A friendly and welcoming school based in Blackburn in the North West of England, St Stephens Church of England Primary School is a place where pupils can develop their skills in a school that is proud of its Christian values and high standards of teaching. The school has been praised for its philosophy of continuous improvement by a recent ofsted inspection, providing a nurturing environment for children.Continuing the high level of teaching facilities was paramount for the school, and after discovering that the gutters and parapets of the building were aged and leaking, it was vital that a solution was found before this caused issues.The ChallengeIn coordination with Polyroof Products Ltd a survey was scheduled to take place at the site to determine the exact nature of the issues and formulate a solution. Upon inspection it was discovered that the existing waterproofing consisted of a single-ply membrane which had become aged with various leaks being reported and localised repairs carried out with not much effect. The underlying build-up consisted of a galvanised steel metal deck and had been coated in plasticol. Once the survey was complete it was clear that the gutters and capping’s would benefit from a high-performance waterproofing system installation, this would protect from further leaks occurring.The SolutionThe System of choice for this project was Protec Xtraflex. Protec Xtraflex is a highly flexible version of the Protec system designed for coating gutters. Its fast curing technology and imperviousness to standing water fulfilled the rapid solution needed to offer durable waterproofing performance for this project. Taking into consideration the information obtained from the survey, a bespoke Polyroof specification was created to combat all of the issues discovered. The chosen Polyroof Approved Contractor to carry out the work on this project was the KSD Group, a contractor with a wealth of experience in the roofing and construction sector.Once all these aspects were in place, work could officially begin. Firstly, it was highlighted that falls and drainage were already present, so the Polyroof specification made use of the existing falls, combining this with the chosen waterproofing system. During this project, there was no need to strip back any of the existing waterproofing. It was made good where required, allowing a smooth substrate for the new system to be bonded to. Once this stage was complete, the area was cleaned and prepared for the new system by removing any dirt and debris. The Protec Xtraflex system was now ready for installation. Firstly, all surfaces that required it were primed, including the single ply existing waterproofing, which required a Polyroof SP Primer 202. During this installation, all lap joints and bolt heads were applied with Polyroof Butyl Tape and Polyroof Butyl Lap Tape, reinforcing these points before application. Pre-formed high-quality Polyroof drip trims were installed to the outer edge of the metal capping, and new flashings were also installed to cover the exposed insulation at this detail.The first coat of Polyroof Protec Xtraflex was applied to the substrate. This consisted of Xtraflex resin and Polymat 450 and was allowed to cure. Due to the rapid cure technology of the system, this only took 30 – 60 minutes, allowing for quick installation. Once complete, the second coat of Protec Xtraflex Resin was installed and allowed to cure.CompletionThe project was efficiently managed by both the contractor KSD Group and regular Polyroof Technical Services visits to ensure that each aspect of the project from start to finish was carried out within the client’s specification, time frame and budget. The project was a great success showing the high-quality work from KSD Group. The customer can now be confident that this new Polyroof Protec Xtraflex membrane will last for many decades to come.

The metal roof was first prepared using high powered jet washing equipment, to remove loose and flaking materials. Liquasil corrosion primer was applied to the corroded cut edges and the entire roof was sprayed with a single coat of Metalseal 20. The metal box gutter was heavily corroded. The loose and flaking material was removed and Liquasil’s Corrosion Primer was applied all along the gutter. The joints in the gutter were sealed with Liquasil’s unique Non-Sag Sealer and then the entire gutter was coated with Liquasil One to provide a seamless gutter finish.

Hundreds of homes have been refurbished as part of a multi-million pound revamp of housing association properties.Tristar Homes spent £8m on the scheme at Kennedy Gardens in Billingham where they carried out work on 225 properties across the three housing blocks as well as creating 12 new one and two bedroom homes which have been made available for rent.The development, completed in September 2014, includes the fitting of new windows, new bathrooms and improved living space due to the new balcony extensions.The roof area before its refurbishment had a U-value of 0.4 W/m²K. This existing build-up would not have met the requirements of the current building regulations Part L.The lower roof had been overlaid at least twice since its original construction. In all but one core sample, the existing insulation was wet through and therefore it was apparent that 90% of the existing roof build up needed stripping to the original asphalt. A further inspection was needed when the asphalt was exposed to ascertain the condition and depth of the asphalt. The asphalt was deemed in reasonable condition so the new system could be installed onto the original asphalt.IKO worked with installing contractors BriggsAmasco to refine the roof specification and recommended IKO Mach One single layer bituminous membrane system, installed to the recommendations of wind uplift calculations and performing to a 0.18U value as per requirements.IKO Mach One membranes are a robust, flame-free, single-layer roofing system with added fire-retardancy. IKO Mach One can be mechanically fastened, ballasted or bonded with polyurethane adhesive.A 20-year insurance-backedfire retardancy guarantee was issued to cover all materials, design and workmanship covering contractor insolvency.

Liquasil's BBA Approved Metalseal 20 roof coating and Gutterseal system were specified for use on the Airspace Trampoline Park in Wolverhampton. The whole roof was pressure washed and a historical cut-edge corrosion treatment was removed before application; the cut-edges were treated with our SWT Corrosion Primer, with additional reinforcement to the mid-laps through the installation of Liquasil's optional HP Butyl Tape.The whole roof was then coated with Metalseal 20 in Goosewing Grey at a filmweight of c. 300 microns to provide a protective, aesthetically pleasing finish.The gutters were cleaned out and dried before being primed with our SWT Corrosion Primer. Once touch-dry, the joints could then be sealed using our Non-Sag Sealer and a single coat of Liquasil One was applied to the entire gutter. Liquasil One can be immediately applied over the top of Non-Sag Sealer, meaning no time is wasted waiting for it to cure before the works can continue.The end result was a revitalised metal roof with a protective, water-resistant coating that is guaranteed for 20 years.

This house adds to this oeuvre on a massive scale, reflecting the footprint in two connected pavilion buildings spanning 60 metres, with a swimming pool in place of the reflective pool. With single storey modernist buildings of this type the largest surface is the one that is not seen – the flat roof. In the case of Pavello the roof is a full 600m2 of Armourplan P with a bespoke fabricated edge detail.

IKOslate, a robust and durable tile was specified for the pitched roof due to vandalism and the fragility of the current system, whereas a tapered scheme was required for the flat roofing - IKO Ultra Prevent alongside a cold applied liquid solution (IKO Polimar) for the more intricate details.

Creating Paradise: Alumasc Delivers for the Complete Building Envelope for One Chamberlain Square Paradise Project One Chamberlain Square is the lead project in a wider vision to create Paradise in Birmingham—the most important development the city has seen in a generation. With the help of Alumasc offering solutions for the entire building envelope, One Chamberlain Square is set to be a vibrant mixed use development that will not only be the new home of professional services firm PwC, but will endeavour to maintain a balance between busy urban hub and the natural world. To do this, Alumasc provided a range of products and services encompassing the entire building envelope, specified by Weedon Architects. This included a Blackdown Extensive Brown Roof, applied over Hydrotech Hot Melt Waterproofing, alongside Harmer Roof Outlets and bespoke solutions from Roof-Pro, for building D: an eight-story commercial building over a podium car park. Inside, bespoke blinds by Levolux, also an Alumasc company, were installed. “This is an extremely high-profile development, which demanded trusted, standard setting products,” said Owen Doherty, Director at Weedon Architects and Project Architect for the venture. “All systems decided on were chosen on quality, durability and enhanced design life compared to competition.” ON THE ROOF OF PARADISEBlackdown’s Extensive Brown Roof is a green roof in the making. Covering approximately 4000m2 of roof space for this project, One Chamberlain’s ‘brown’ roof is installed without plant life and will naturally seed from plant material that either blows in from the local environment or that is introduced by birds. In this way, it literally replaces the green space that has been taken up by the construction of the building it lies on, encouraging biodiversity by providing and strengthening habitats for wildlife local to the area, with truly local plant life. Typically, the substrate is mounded to offer habitat variation, therefore the depth of the brown roof can vary be between 92-170mm and have a saturated weight of approximately 113-213kg per square metre, depending on the depths of the substrate. Beneath this, Hydrotech MM6125 roofing, a hot melt rubber bitumen membrane, delivers sound structural waterproofing. The bitumen is heated and combined with a polyester reinforcement and protection sheet to form a weatherproof layer that has a 100% bond to prepared concrete surfaces. With no product failures in over 50 years, Hydrotech Hot Melt roofing is guaranteed for waterproofing integrity for the lifetime of the structure. Working in tandem with each other, the Blackdown Extensive Brown Roof helps to extend and reinforce the life and guarantee of the waterproofing, offering a protective layer of natural insulation. Giving his seal of approval, Owen said: “I only specify Alumasc hot melt at the moment and have done for many years. All products and systems chosen here have had zero product failures and I have never had any issues with technical specifications on previous high-profile buildings.”PROVIDING EFFICIENT DRAINAGEGiven the huge expanse of roof space involved this project, effective flat roof drainage was essential. Harmer AV high capacity aluminium roof outlets were installed for this purpose. Suitable for all regular flat roofing applications with continuous membranes, these outlets are lightweight, durable, non-corrodible and have been proven to drain 40% more roof area than conventional gravity outlets, therefore further ensuring the long life and service of other flat roof systems. Aiding project completion, Roof-Pro support systems were also tailored bespoke to meet the roof structure requirements. Free-standing support and access solutions were devised that would allow work to be carried out safely, efficiently and without causing damage to any of the roofing systems being installed. A WORD FROM THE CONTRACTORChristian Bradley of Briggs Amasco, who installed the roofing, commented: “One Chamberlain Square and the surrounding podium waterproofing form part of the largest construction programme in Birmingham. Occupants’ wellbeing has been carefully considered with a stunningpanoramic rooftop and 150m running track and general outdoor employee wellness facilities.A roofing solution was required to support the lifecycle of the building along with an excellentproduct reputation for this distinguished office space. Given the quality, longevity and environmentalconsiderations required from the roofing design, the insulation properties and warranty performancewere extremely important from the outset.CHALLENGESOur Technical department assisted the architectural and construction teams to resolve numerouscomplex design elements across the varied roof zones including running track, ballast walkways, greenzones, and pedestal zones, to determine the best roofing solution.Installation of the Davit Arm System for a building of this scale was especially important so personnel canbe safely suspended whilst working at height. This presented us with a unique challenge in providing aworkable solution that aligned with the sequence of works, whilst facilitating future routine inspection ofits base plates, and maintaining waterproof integrity without compression.Careful planning and detailing were required around roof penetrations to minimise aesthetical impact,and roof equipment was safely installed above the roof assembly.SOLUTIONThe construction comprises a composite concrete slab receiving our Hot Melt Hydrotech Waterproofing System. Offering a true lifecycle – Hydrotech high performance waterproofing, through its’ unique characteristics and installation process, now forms part of the building fabric. The result offers complete watertightness for the lifetime of the building.The building is also insulated to a high u-value target offering exceptional thermal performance and achieving a high kPa rating. This community engagement project for YMCA in Milton Keynes featured Wallbarn M-Tray on a roof space which acted as a leisure and social area for the students and residents of the YMCA campus in Milton Keynes. It also featured in the training and development of young people with learning difficulties and with challenging upbringings to learn about construction and green roofing, being able to gain NVQ qualification and further certification for installing green roofs.The green roof will be moved in its entirety to a new premises in early 2022 where the benefits of the M-Tray system are fully demonstrated. Rather than have to dig up tonnes of loose aggregate, established sedum and wildflower planting and sheet drainage materials; each module can be simply lifted up and transported via pallets to the its new home the other side of Milton Keynes at the new YMCA building. As this new premises will house many of the young people using YMCA services, this new green roof becomes their green roof to enjoy.

The park includes 37 different rides and attractions and features the world's fastest rollercoaster “Formula Rossa” – reaching 240 km/h in 4.9 seconds. The park has been open since 2010 and has been nominated for numerous awards. Project:Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi needed a unique solution to allow for the maintenance of rollercoaster carts. Due to restricted space, a sliding hatch was proposed to allow easy craning in and out.Products Supplied Surespan manufactured and supplied an SLHE Aluminium, thermally broken, single leaf, electrically operated, sliding roof access hatch. The hatch was a large 5400 x 4000 structural opening sliding hatch.A sliding hatch allowed maximum clear space. Operated by a 230v geared motor. The lid and upstand are filled with 50mm thick CFC and HCFC free Polyisocyanurate insulation which offers a U-Value of 0.43W/m²K.

MOY collaborated with the client, their design team, the main contractor, and the roofing installer to execute the roof installation for an extensive green roof. For such rooftop projects, a new dimension of roof access is offered by the LAMILUX Flat Roof Access Hatch Comfort range, designed to give a generous daylight intake in attic apartments alongside convenient access to the roof terrace creating an air of grace and beauty both internally and externally. The LAMILUX Flat Roof Access Hatch Comfort range now introduces its fourth product into the family, giving more choice and flexibility when creating a luxurious living space with an exclusive ambience. Featuring unrestricted use as a natural ventilation device and convenient access to the roof terrace, the indoor climate also benefits from the high energy efficiency of the range thanks to the thermally broken frame and excellent air tightness values.The existing Solo and Duo Flat Roof Access Hatch products from LAMILUX open laterally by moving one or two panels horizontally to create direct access to step onto the roof terrace, whilst the space-saving hinged opening Swing variant swiftly opens its one meter by 3000 or 3500 mm long aperture to 84 degrees in just 25 seconds. The fourth, and newest addition to the Access Hatch Comfort repertoire the Square, makes it possible, for the first time, to also use spiral and platform staircases underneath. Under the pitched roof, the gable end glazing has been designed to perfectly match the profiles of the SUNFLEX SF75 bifold doors, whilst the inclusion of a single access door allows the extension to angle away to create a larger kitchen/dining area.

Heslington East Campus Student Residences: Sustainable and Efficient Expansion Alongside the preservation of listed buildings, the University of York is investing in a flagship £130m development for students that promotes wellbeing, community, and sustainability. The initial phase sees 16 brand new student accommodation blocks and 2 communal hub buildings providing flexible social spaces. Surrounded by stunning lake views and natural habitats, the buildings are part of a huge initiative to expand the student accommodation offering.GOALSArchitects Sheppard Robson alongside Graham Construction sought to futureproof accommodation by incorporating multi-use buildings, including catering outlets and social hubs. Key to the brief was using the latest in safety, energy efficiency, longevity, and warranty credentials. Graham Construction’s use of modular external sandwich panels, prefabricated steel bathroom pods, and pre-assembled services distribution racks used Modern Methods of Construction with off-site construction techniques.CHALLENGESThe major challenge was to specify a roofing system that could keep up with the pace of the build, given the typical building was constructed from start to finish in circa 14 weeks.The roof deck comprised of precast concrete slabs which facilitated the works programme for speed of construction and consistency in build quality.Alumasc’s challenge was to find not only a waterproofing solution that was able to keep up with such speed of construction but also to meet a truly sustainable life cycle equalling the lifetime of the building.A key consideration in the design was the roofing materials’ thermal properties. To meet the u-value target of 0.15, Alumasc’s XPS Plus insulation was specified, providing a single layer of 175mm, which reduced the height of the overall build-up when compared traditional XPS.SOLUTIONHydrotech 6125 Waterproofing System / Derbigum Hybrid Upstands For over half a century Hydrotech Monolithic Membrane has been successfully used by architects and specifiers, ensuring some of the world’s most prestigious buildings and structures are kept watertight. With no product failures in over 50 years and guaranteed waterproofing integrity for the lifetime of the structure, Hydrotech offers a total life cycle solution for the building.Hydrotech was specified on the main roof areas for this project as it easily meets individual requirements of the buildings. In addition, the system is designed to last the lifetime of the building or structure to which it is applied, giving long-term waterproofing integrity and no future replacement costs.Applied in a hot liquid state to the deck, and including a polyester reinforcement, the bond of Hydrotech MM6125 is 100% absolute. There is no risk of water tracking below the membrane and because it is monolithic, no possibility of lap failure.DERBIGUM WATERPROOFINGDerbigum sustainable roof system was selected for the upstand areas. This hybrid solution was developed to improve the thermal efficiency in all areas to mitigate against cold-bridging with minimal insulant thickness. Derbigum bituminous membranes are high-performance waterproofing systems offering extended warranties and the highest levels of project support. The upstand zones benefited from Derbigum Mineral which is a mineral surfaced composite reinforced membrane.ROOFTOP MANAGEMENT STRATEGYIn addition to the waterproofing solution the buildings benefit from the full Alumasc rooftop management service. This included the design and supply of safety systems, accessories, and over 20 AOV smoke hatches meeting all British and European standards.Specific safe zones were designed by Alumasc Roof-Pro and positioned around all roofs for safe access. Purpose made clips for installing lightning conductor tape without roof penetration were also provided. This case study examines the benefits, challenges, and outcomes of utilising Slate 2000. This case study highlights the successful implementation of Britmet's Slate 2000 roofing system and Britframe structural solution in a social housing project. The client, a new customer of Britmet, discovered the systems at the UK Construction Week (UKCW) exhibition. Impressed by the innovative design and features, the client expressed interest in utilising Britframe for a flat-to-pitch conversion project in their social housing development. The client is a housing association responsible for managing and maintaining a portfolio of social housing properties. They were seeking an effective solution to address various issues with one of their buildings, including an ageing roof with multiple repairs, inadequate insulation, and inefficient rainwater management. The objective was to enhance the building's aesthetics, improve water tightness, increase energy efficiency, and minimize future maintenance requirements. The initial meeting between the client and Britmet took place at the UKCW exhibition, where the client became acquainted with Britframe, a lightweight and versatile structural solution. Intrigued by its potential, the client arranged for an on-site visit to further assess the feasibility of utilising the Britframe and Slate 2000 roofing system for their project.Slate 2000 is a durable and aesthetically pleasing lightweight roofing material that offers long-term performance and weather resistance. It's stylish design and robust properties make it an ideal choice for enhancing the visual appeal and durability of roofs and cladding. During the initial site visit, Britmet's team evaluated the existing roof condition, rainwater management system, and insulation levels. After careful assessment, they provided the client with a budget price estimate for the proposed project. The estimate included the cost of materials, labour, and necessary ancillary items. To streamline the project, the client signed a Project Assist agreement with Britmet. This allowed Britmet to obtain planning drawings and submit the necessary applications on behalf of the client. Additionally, Britmet provided structural calculations, design drawings, and rainwater calculations to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and best practices. The main objective of the project was to convert the existing flat roof to a pitched roof using Britframe and install Britmet's Slate 2000 roofing system. This conversion offered numerous advantages, including improved water tightness, increased insulation, and resolved rainwater management issues. Notably, the internal gutters, which had caused maintenance problems, were relocated externally as part of the new design.Beyond functionality, the new roofing system and structural solution significantly enhanced the building's aesthetic appeal. The modern design of Britframe, combined with the stylish appearance of Slate 2000, seamlessly integrated the property with its surroundings. The improved visual aesthetics added value to the social housing development. One of the key benefits of choosing Britmet's Slate 2000 and Britframe was the assurance of minimal maintenance requirements. Unlike the previous roof covering, which had undergone numerous repairs and reached the end of its life, the new system was designed to be durable and long-lasting. This eliminated the need for ongoing maintenance and reduced future costs for the housing association.Through the adoption of Britmet's Slate 2000 roofing system and Britframe structural solution, the social housing project achieved its objectives of enhanced aesthetics, improved water tightness, increased insulation, and efficient rainwater management. The collaboration between the client and Britmet, from the initial meeting at UKCW to the successful implementation of the project, demonstrated the value of innovative roofing and structural solutions in the social housing sector.
