The extraordinary design hotel Twelve Senses Retreat in Encinitas in southern California offers its guests the ultimate in relaxation for body and soul. Encinitas is located close to San Diego and is regarded as one of the world’s top surfing spots. The atmosphere of the coastal town is imbued with a love of surfing, yoga, health, and getting close to nature.The guests of Anke Bodack can also experience this special ambience. With the Twelve Senses Retreat the designer has realized her life’s dream of a minimalist micro-hotel. Its name refers to the twelve human senses found in the teachings of Rudolf Steiner. The Austrian philosopher divides the senses into physical, environmental, and cognitive senses. At the Twelve Senses Retreat, these are stimulated through a combination of quality accommodation, a sense of well-being, and sustainability.At the Twelve Senses Retreat, luxurious minimalism is not a contradiction in terms: its rooms are warm and inviting despite their understated design. The four rooms are uniquely designed and each reflects one of the four natural elements – “Air”, “Earth”, “Fire”, and “Water”.How to fit a luxurious bathroom into an open room with limited space posed the greatest challenge. Designer Anke Bodack discovered a photo of a Stonetto shower tray in Duravit’s bathroom magazine, and this came to influence the design and the interior decoration. Flush-mounted shower trays create a sense of space in the room. Three of the four rooms were fitted with an open shower. ME by Starck toilets, Luv washbasins, and L-Cube bathroom furniture can also be found in the Twelve Senses Retreat. Additionally, a free-standing Luv bathtub with its Nordic purism blends perfectly into the minimalistic, soothing atmosphere in the “Earth” room.

A recent project of the Berkeley Group, the Kingston Gas Works with 240 apartments called for a special solution due to the maximum construction height available for the shower being only 100mm including tray and drainage. All showers were constructed with XPS integrated shower elements (wedi Fundo Integro), which are only 90mm thick including the integrated DN50 drainage. Despite the low construction height, the specified solution offers no compromise on the flow rate of the drainage. JD Gyms are a reputable company within the leisure industry. When they started to experience serious leakage problems across their estate (especially on mezzanine floors), they quickly realised that their existing shower construction does not live up to the standard of their service – and would need a reliable, guaranteed system solution.In order to allow for a straightforward and safe replacement of existing showers without the need to change the existing pipework, a grid platform constructed of 80mm XPS building boards was proposed . The showers then were fitted with XPS linear shower trays featuring dry-fit drain technology, 12.5mm XPS building boards on the walls and surrounding floor areas were sealed by proprietary sealing and decoupling membrane, all ready to tile after 24 hours. Up till now, 18 different sites have been completed and the shower system solution comes with one manufacturer’s guarantee on the whole installation. 

HLM, the architectural practice had a very high-end, designer lead project at Park Lane London, which required bespoke components mixed together with standard products forming a warrantied bathroom solution for the client. 15 types of different bespoke XPS shower trays were created for this project and used across the 460 rooms spread over 3 phases.240 bespoke XPS niches were installed and in 210 cases substructure sets were used to reach the required 100mm installation height thus allow for a straightforward replacement of old baths with showers without having to modify the existing pipework.In all bathrooms, wedi XPS building boards were used in 12.5mm thickness for walls and 10mm thickness for floors.RESULT: Thanks to the sub-contractor Milk Leisure, an Approved Partner of a leading manufacturer of XPS shower/bathroom systems, the client received a 100% waterproof bathroom with a 15 year manufacturer’s warranty on the whole installation. 

This particular project was a private residential bathroom in the architects own house. The client wanted a linear channel, but the joist layout prevented the use of a traditional single gradient tray with the drainage at one end, so instead we opted for the wedi "Riofino" shower tray with a central channel with a tileable insert as you can see above.The build also includes the use of our pre-formed wedi "niche" and wedi building boards on all the walls and floor coupled with our 360 and 610 adhesives for the complete system solution and warranty.

A residential customer had a storage unit and wanted improve it by adding a green roof. M-Tray®, being modular in shape and easy to install, was the perfect solution. The green roof had to be walked through the house to access the garden. Traditional roll-out green roofs, with their loose substrate bags and loose sedum blankets were too messy to transport indoors. M-Tray® is self-contained within the walls of the plastic tray and comes with fully established, sustainable vegetation. M-Trays® clip together easily, allowing the sedum to blend together, providing a beautiful, seamless finish.

This project involved a high-rise office being refurbished. Being in the Central London and nearing completion meant a busy site. Ultra fast and mess-free installation was essential. M-Tray®’s were delivered to site on pallets and quickly unloaded. The M-Tray®’s stackable design meant it was easy to transport through the (finished) building and elevator. The individual trays were then carried up the final flight of stairs to the rooftop. As the trays simply clip together they are quick and easy to install. In just 4 hours a the roof space was transformed into a green roof.

A three year construction project in Knightsbridge required a temporary green roof on welfare huts. The local residents were concerned about overlooking these steel huts long-term. The solution is M-Tray® – our modular green roof system. The steel huts were wheeled into position on site on skates. They were covered with an EPDM waterproofing membrane. M-Tray® units were installed. They were easily carried up the stairs by hand and installed by hand within minutes. The modular and portable M-Tray® can just be unclicked and lifted away upon completion of the construction process.

This project had incredibly restricted access, where the client wanted a green roof on an existing bitumen rooftop overlooked by hotel rooms. The M-Trays® had to be transported on a trolley through the hotel kitchens. They were winched onto the roof itself using a genie lift and slotted into position in a matter of hours. Trying to construct a roll-out green roof was impossible, given the restricted access. Installation was fast and effective, taking only a day and giving an instant green roof. M-Tray® dramatically improved the view from the rooms and improved the guests’ experience.

Mayfair, London Our modular green roof solution, the M-Tray®, has transformed what was previously a fairly unsightly bitumen rooftop at a Mayfair hotel into a beautiful green space for guests to enjoy. Conversion of the 13sqm space was awarded to Wallbarn after we successfully completed the hotel group’s first green roof project at the Radisson Heathrow. Being so easy to transport our M-Trays®were selected as the fastest and most efficient way of converting the unused space into a lush, green and aesthetically-pleasing space. The installation only took half a day with minimal disturbance to guests.

The new generation of M-Tray® modules were used on this office building in Poklington, Yorkshire. This project was in the heart of the Vale of Yorkshire, within and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and planning sensitivities dictated a green roof was needed on the office building. The clients wanted the existing farm buildings, which had been converted into offices and storage space, to blend into the hillside with the structures having the very lowest impact on the surrounding countryside.The timber framed building meant a low weight solution was required so the 100mm deep pre-grown modules were ideal.

Our client was a major nursery stock grower in British Columbia with a very large sedum green roof project in Vancouver. The architect was concerned about future-proofing the green roof and wanted to ensure that, if ever they had issues with their waterproofing seal or any other aspect of the structure, the green roof could be taken up without too much disruption. It was decided that a modular solution would be the best route. M-Tray® was included in a worldwide competition to find the most suitable modular design and was judged as the best product available.

The forming of a level threshold would be easy if the designer did not have to consider the prevention of damp ingress. The problem is a number of elements converge at a threshold, and when the threshold is required to be practically level, it can be difficult to bring together protective measures in a manner that promote integrated functionality and structural convenience. A different approach to forming level thresholds is offered by Cavity Trays Ltd. It literally and physically covers the problem. The Type LTT Level Threshold Tray is a three-dimensional preformed DPC that envelops opening masonry skins.

A Victorian masterpiece restored. The St Pancras Renaissance London Hotel and Residential Chambers is being hailed as one of the city's most romantic buildings. Majestic shower screens were specified for all 68 luxury apartments and penthouses in the residential chambers and the key elegant bedroom suites at the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel. A wide variety of Frameless models were supplied including Barcelona, Rio and Cadiz shower enclosures. As well as the high performance that you would expect from a premium product, minimal design and accurate installation were essential for this project.

The client contacted us in urgent need of a green roof solution before a project handover. Green roof was part of the planning application. Pre-grown panels with patented design were delivered on pallets and lifted to the roof via forklift. The ingenious connecting system means each module clicks to its neighbour tightly and securely so once installed, the sedum has a seamless appearance. The plants are a mixture of sedum species ideal for the UK climate. They are well rooted into Wallbarn's bespoke substrate and fully mature. 250 sqm of green roof was installed in 1 day.

A systematic approach of arresting and reducing the flow of water within a cavity wall prior to any change in status of that wall helps balance demands on damp protection measures. In the case of a circular window passing through a curved cavity wall, protecting against damp ingress is easily achieved using a preformed Type K cavitray. The preformed Cavitray is curved to match the wall. Conventional flat material or roll material cannot uniformly match the radius of a wall.

IntroductionThe Keyfix Non-Combustible Cavity Tray System has played an important role in futureproofing a major new residential development in Stratford’s Olympic Park by exceeding new building regulations whilst improving build quality and installation efficiency on site.OverviewLocated in the very heart of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Chobham Manor in East London is the first of five new neighbourhoods in the former home of the 2012 Olympics. Comprising 850 new one, two and three-bed homes alongside community facilities, shops, public green spaces and community areas, this stunning new development has sustainability at its core with all homes built to the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4.In a design by JSA Architects and built by Taylor Wimpey, the layered brickwork façade features projected bay windows, balconies and set back terraces. To meet the requirements and a tight build programme, Keyfix worked with subcontractor Chine Brickwork and supplied 4545 metres of Keyfix Non-Combustible Cavity Trays (NCCT) along with Corner Units and Weeps on blocks A, B and C which form Phase Four of the development.ChallengeThe challenges for Keyfix were the unique brickwork build programme which incorporated two runs of cavity trays being supplied per floor to accommodate brickwork corbelling and recessed brickwork.SolutionAs the corbels where built at a different stage on the build programme so the Keyfix Non-combustible Cavity Trays had to project out either side of the pier when initially being installed. Therefore, when the infill corbels where being built the continuous run of tray could link in seamlessly. A task that would have been near impossible had the system relied on tapes or mastics to make the linking joint.The Keyfix stainless steel NCCT was specified due to its self-supporting system which doesn’t need fixing back to the internal concrete frame and clips together for fast and easy installation. It is essentially a ‘Fix & Forget’ solution with no additional fixings, sealants or onsite fabrication required by the brickwork contractor. Therefore, installation of the trays did not impede the speed of bricklaying even when compared to traditional DPC. Installed in the outer leaf with no connection with the inner skin, this innovative cavity tray system does not create a thermal bridge and eliminates all differential movement issues.With a lifespan of 125+ years it is the only non-combustible cavity tray system that does not rely on tapes and mastics to make watertight joints, therefore elimating one of the main reasons for product failure.Commenting Kieran Coyle of Keyfix said: “Holding an A1 Fire Rating, the Keyfix non-combustible cavity tray solution exceeds the minimum standards set out in ADB (Approved Document B), whilst ensuring this new development meets and exceeds the latest regulations. Designed by Broadway Malyan and built by developer EcoWorld, it comprises of 487 new one, two and three-bed homes alongside retail and business spaces, public green spaces and community areas.In order to safeguard the future of the development, Keyfix supplied 765 metres of Keyfix Non-Combustible Cavity Trays (NCCT) along with 2490 Corner Units, 4000 Pier Units and 5000 Weeps on blocks E,F,G and H of the development.ChallengeOne of the key challenges for Keyfix was the brickwork build programme which required early completion at the lower grid line levels of one to six. This was due to the scaffolding needed to be stripped away because it was blocking a walkway at Brentford Stadium and therefore needed to be cleared prior to the start of the new football season.SolutionWorking to a tight schedule, the offsite fabrication and preforming of bespoke non-combustible cavity tray units in line with the brickwork set out drawings saved time for the installation team at brickwork contractor DWG. This one-piece NCCT system allowed for a very simple and very efficient install, enabling the brickwork façade to continue at a fast pace.The Keyfix stainless steel NCCT was specified due to its self-supporting system which doesn’t need fixing back to the internal concrete frame and clips together for fast and easy installation.
