IKO Roofs Overseas Students at the University of York

IKO PLC

The University of York has invested in a £27m infrastructure in the Heslington East Campus which is planned as a state-of-the-art learning facility for pre-university overseas students to provide academic preparation programmes prior to their undergraduate and postgraduate studies. The new development – Piazza Building – will provide a 350-seat auditorium, flexible learning spaces including two laboratories, a learning resource centre, a 350-seat lakeside view restaurant, offices spread across 70,000 sq ft. and space for student societies and activities. The new three-storey building was designed as crescent-shaped to wrap around a retained oak tree in the courtyard, located to the south of Langwith College on the University campus. To give the building an aesthetically pleasing and sharp look, aluminium was used on the façade cladding, roof edges and fascia. IKO Polymeric’s Armourplan P PVC roofing membrane in slate grey was specified to complement the dark grey colour of the cladding and roof edges. Chemplas, who managed the roof installation, chose IKO Armourplan P membrane to meet the guarantee requirements of the client and contribute to the BREEAM rating of the building. The crescent shape roof required attention to details and a neat installation which was achieved to a high standard by Chemplas. IKO Armourplan P membrane made the installation easier thanks to its flexibility. Whilst suitable for extended guarantees, this membrane is still only 1.2mm thick, making the complex detailing easier. With high-quality polymer throughout – even on the lower layers – and high-performance reinforcement, IKO Armourplan P membrane offers a robust solution.Due to the campus being exposed to strong winds, a wind uplift calculation was the key to the performance of the single-ply roof. IKO Polymeric’s technical team provided Chemplas with a report advising the right number and type of fixings required in different areas of the roof.Looking over the green fields of Heslington, the roof is now complete and the building will be ready to welcome students from all over the world in the next term.

Tobermore

The Challenge Modern paving was required for the entrance plaza of a shopping destination High Street Mall has been transformed into Portadown’s leading retail and parking hub. The £6m regeneration project required a new shopping centre layout, enhanced parking, greater town centre access and a new pedestrianised central plaza with modern landscaping. Over 2000m2 of modern paving material was required for the entrance to the retail hub. Due to the expansive nature of the area, laying patterns would need to be used to ‘zone’ and break up areas into smaller pockets of space. The plaza needed to be designed in a way that people could use it as a place to gather and socialise. The client wanted the retail project to have a public realm feel to it that the community could enjoy. The Solution Tobermore’s Fusion block paving created a plaza with a striking, modern look.  Fusion block paving in Silver, Mid Grey, Sandstone and Noir was chosen for the 2000m2 plaza which created a striking, modern look. The entrance to the new 25,000ft2 Lidl store features a new pedestrianised square complete with seating and planters. Anchor tenants, Lidl, opted for 600m2 of Fusion paving to be laid outside their premises in keeping with the rest of the retail park. The client fully embraced the complimentary hard landscape proposal which was provided by Tobermore. Unique laying patterns were used to ‘zone’ and break up space in the expansively paved area. The paving design provided by Tobermore featured ‘pockets of space’ where coffee docks and pop-up markets could be situated. Fusion in Sandstone and a small proportion of Mid Grey was used to zone ‘public’ areas like the courtyard. The walkways feature Fusion in Silver and Mid Grey with a low percentage of Sandstone in the blend. These design choices were made to distinguish each area while still giving subtle reference to each other. Bands of Fusion in Noir were used as buffer strips to create a clear distinction of where people can walk into and out of the Lidl store.  The retail project certainly has a public realm feel to it as it is fully pedestrianised. The plaza was designed in a way that the local community could use it as a place to gather and socialise. There are seated areas with soft landscaping that creates a calming atmosphere for people to relax.

CDM Stravitec

One Tower Bridge is the home for a new 900-seat theatre built for the London Theatre Company on the South side of Tower Bridge called the Bridge Theatre. The theatre is one of the largest to be built in London in the past 100 years. To protect the residential accommodation that wraps around the theatre the acoustic consultant specified that the theatre be built on a 200 mm concrete floating slab supported on springs (Stravifloor Deck). The structural engineers specified that the floating slab must spread the loadings of the theatre structure as much as possible to the supporting structure beneath.CDM Stravitec’s in-house structural engineers used finite element analysis to optimise the load spread of the floating slab whilst retaining the acoustic requirements. The optimised design incorporated 4,300 springs with higher concentrations of springs where the imposed loads were greatest.Reinforcement density was also increased in the higher loaded areas to optimise the load spread characteristics of the slab. The floating slab was installed within a very tight timeframe of 3 weeks in order to comply with the project build programme.

Logic Manufactured Bespoke

The University of Central Lancashire has enhanced its state-of-the-art facilities by reclaiming and naturalising rooftop and ground-level spaces utilising Logic’s innovative approach.UCLan Preston Campus is in the heart of the city, and like many inner-city University spaces, it was surrounded by concrete. There is a push to naturalise educational environments with limited access to nature and add it in ways that enhance the usability of the facility. Any design must create more space for students to study, socialise, and generally use the University campus, reclaiming under-utilised areas. The building was created to feel like a student space and provide them with a feeling of ‘ownership’, including design aspects that offered variety, from vibrant social spaces for collaboration to quiet study areas. It was determined that the best use of the outdoor space surrounding this innovative campus was to add planters with raised planter edging and seating on the ground floor and rooftop podium. Using sustainably sourced timber aligns with the eco-friendly ambitions of the campus while creating a natural and warm finish to the heavily urbanised area.

With this in mind, it was crucial that the restoration was completed to the highest standard and preserved as many original features as possible. The high standard is perpetuated throughout the building grounds which include accessible terraces, green spaces, and paths, providing a relaxing and secluded environment for residents to enjoy. It is here that Artform’s Ashbery lighting range ‘shines’ making the exterior accessible in the dark by providing ambient and inviting light. Path lights have been placed around the leafy garden along the winding paths - wall-mounted versions stand out against the red building walls - and tall pole-mounted pedestrian units line the entrance, all working together to complement the environment. The trio of Ashbery lights brings together advanced LED technology and optics, paying homage to traditional lantern-style lighting. The range, manufactured by Landscape Forms, has been developed in collaboration with Robert A.M. Stern Architects, celebrated masters of modern traditional design, and Fisher Marantz Stone, an internationally recognised award-winning lighting design agency. Hendon care home offers 102 spacious apartments with a variety of layouts, aspects and views to suit everyone. There is also a dedicated dementia care complex with 24 apartments. Amenities include a café and restaurant, private dining room, boutique cinema, pub lounge and numerous seating areas for relaxing or socialising. There is also a hair salon and spa for ensuring residents look and feel their best. Othello Hall and Activity Room provides a big flexible space for a range of activities and events, with stage and seating for up to 60 residents and guests. This was a particularly interesting and rewarding project to be involved with that has ensured the best quality of living and comfort is offered to its residents whilst also preserving an important piece of local history.

Heated Z Lockers at BT Bristol

Heated Z Lockers at BT Bristol

Helmsman

As a part of the development of the company, BT are planning to reduce their number of working locations from over 300 to just 30. BT Bristol features flexible workspaces, the latest IT and smart building technology, restaurants and cafes and a rooftop wildflower meadow terrace with panoramic views of Bristol. An important aspect of the development of this new building was its eco credentials. With the whole company seeking to reduce its carbon emissions, choices were made throughout the design and build process to support this aim. As well as the rooftop meadow, the building features a heating system from the low-carbon district heating network and aspects that encourage employees to make greener choices about their travel to and from work. In order to support this, the BT Bristol office building features parking for around 270 bicycles, as well as changing rooms, showers and lockers.Helmsman were excited to be contacted by Honeyfield Property Services to supply and install the lockers at BT Bristol. The client requested Heated Z Lockers, with hasp locks for the user to attach their own padlock.Heated Lockers are a great addition to a cycle storage area, providing a storage solution that can dry damp clothes as well as keep your items safe during the working day.The Z shape is a particularly good choice for heated lockers, as the user can hang their clothing in the taller area of the locker and let the heated locker do the hard work.Air flows through the locker through a perforated base, and perforations at the top of the locker allow the damp air to escape. The tube heaters are positioned within the stands of the locker and can be either plugged into a 3-pin power socket or wired into a fused switch. In keeping with BT Bristol’s aim for carbon efficiency, the laminate used for the project was Graphite by BioCarbon Laminates. This is one of Helmsman’s standard laminate options, and is a carbon neutral material. In addition to the lockers, we also supplied and installed seat stands, with adjustable feet, and ash hardwood seat slats. The stands, back and sides of the lockers were all cladded with matching Graphite laminate, and the lockers were finished with black circle discs with white numbering. It was great to work with Honeyfield Property Services on this project, and wish the BT Bristol office much success in the future. If you have a similar project, or want to find out more about our Heated Lockers, give us a call on 01284 530427 or fill in our contact form here.

Op-Deck to the Curly House

Op-Deck to the Curly House

CDI Innovative Construction Materials Ltd

Initial project meetings first started in early 2008, the clients owned a small cottage on the site which had been extended several times during the 80’s and had permission to make further adaptations. The mixture of building standards meant that their home was extremely drafty and very energy inefficient. The site itself is particularly exposed. The design which achieved planning permission was a crescent form which steps and slides into the slopes on the site. The crescent formation is in direct response to solar orientation. The brief was to design a building which would accommodate the family for many years into the future, the planned occupancy would be for 5 adults. Additionally, the home will be used for large family occasions. A requirement was set for a minimum 16 seated spaces to be available for dining during these family occasions.Op-Deck was added into the scheme very early into the design process as the way of creating the highly insulated structural floor as the house was being designed under Passivhaus standards. The overall U-value of the property is 0.1w/m2K as standard. The system was installed on the lower and ground floors and also the roof.

Junckers solid wood floor for historic music hall

Junckers solid wood floor for historic music hall

Junckers Ltd

The historic Aberdeen Music Hall has been restored and redeveloped by Architects BDP. The Category A listed concert hall has been completely refurbished and now includes a performance studio, creative learning space and a café/bar. Nearly 1,500m2 of Junckers solid Nordic Beech Classic flooring has been fitted as part of the transformation, including in the impressive 1,300 seat auditorium, which now has step-free access to all levels. Nordic Beech with its white pigmented finish offers a light and bright backdrop to the interior and makes the most of the architects’ new architectural lighting by reflecting an abundance of light. By specifying the same floor for much of the building, the various spaces are seamlessly connected by a unifying element. At 140mm wide, Junckers’ signature wide board, long-length floor boards really come into their own in the open spaces and circulation routes, offering a clean and elegant look. Solid beech is amongst the most hard-wearing timbers used for flooring and Junckers’ pre-finished floors are well-known for their durability. The flooring contractor was West End Flooring.

Logic Manufactured Bespoke

The client wanted the outdoor furniture to reflect the industrial heritage of the project and to boast outstanding environmental credentials. Therefore, the client expressed their wish to use huge sections of raw timber. They even enquired about using repurposed wooden piles used in jetty and wharf construction. Unfortunately, these cannot be used as they are very fibrous and can cause splinters.  Typically, tropical hardwood is the go-to timber for this kind of project. However, due to the required girth of the timber this could not be deemed sustainable for two reasons. Firstly, tropical hardwood has a growth period of 150+ years and secondly is transported around 6000 miles from central Africa with an unacceptably large carbon footprint. Therefore, it was decided to use a sustainable UK grown timber, negating both these factors.Pueblo seating was used not only because it complemented the clients design aspirations but also the client needed a product that was highly robust. If a thinner profile timber were used it would quickly decay as the project location is within the tidal section of the River Thames, which means that outdoor furniture is susceptible to saltwater corrosion and decay.
