IKO Armourplan PVC single ply roof membrane - Arnold Hill Academy Nottingham

SIG Design & Technology

The £14m Arnold Hill Academy is part of the Priority School Building Programme (PSBP) and is being constructed adjacent to the existing school in Nottingham. The new Academy’s 3,570m2 flat roof covers 8,200m2 of replacement teaching space, science labs, an indoor sports hall and a drama studio. The project team at Wates Group had already identified potential roofing products. Due to the unconventional roof specification they asked SIG Design & Technology to recommend a product that would work in tandem to deliver the required performances.

A good example of the before and after effects of laying a sedum roof garden and accompanying deck and paved area onto a small domestic roof terrace. All these products are designed to sit on top of the waterproof membrane (in this case single ply) there was no issue of damage to the roof. The support pads lifted the decking off the roof, eliminating the risk of the timber piercing the membrane, and drainage was maintained through the roof surface since the green roof system has a cavity beneath its own reservoir and drainage layer to allow water run-off.

William Bird of Protan partner roofing contractor, Roofdec Ltd, commented, "Protan's vacuum roof system is quicker to install than conventional fully-adhered or mechanically-fixed systems."

Protan Prefabricated Roof System at Wilmslow Garden Centre, Cheshire

Protan (UK) Ltd

Over 2,300m² of Protan SE 1.2mm PVC single-ply membrane was installed in the Protan Prefabricated roof system at Wilmslow Garden Centre, Cheshire. The main driver behind the installation of this roof system was the time constraint placed upon the roofing contractor for installation of the roof. Using Protan's unique ProPlan CAD software, a bespoke solution was created for the project - prefabricated rolls of membrane measuring 3.96x8.00m were manufactured to span the barrels of the roof. This minimised on-site waste and reduced on-site hot air welding by 1,080 linear metres.

Codebreaking Hut and Building Roof Gets Restored to Match the Original Specification

IKO PLC

Replacing the original traditional bitumen membranes, the flat roofs had to be re-roofed with high performance bitumen membranes to safeguard the integrity of the building fabric for many years to come. The roofs also needed to be insulated, whilst complying with the strict planning restrictions and maintaining the look and feel of the original external appearance. External gutters positions could not be altered and the position/make-up of the original windows in any abutments could not be changed.

Creating a Vibrant and Attractive Office Environment, Including the Roof!

IKO PLC

A detailed visual and physical inspection, together with core and moisture probe analysis carried out by IKO on the roof, patio and walkway areas, indicated that the waterproofing membrane was in a condition commensurate with the age and the type of the traditional membranes installed. They had become fragile and brittle. The decks were saturated due to water ingress, and natural ageing had played a principle part in the deterioration of the waterproofing system. The build-up would not have met the requirements of the current building regulations Part L. IKO worked to refine the specification for the main roof,

Eagle Waterproofing Ltd

ObjectivesThe old felt roof on this building was tired, damaged from traffic over the years and failing. It was leaking in places which was causing damage to the building and had been holding water due to the lack of fall on most sections of the roof. The objective was to renew the roof, extend it’s life and create a fall to prevent the standing water.SolutionsThe existing felt roof was cleaned and all stone chippings present on the original roof were removed. Tapered insulation was then laid on the sections of the roof which had problems with standing water to create a fall towards the outlets. All other sections of the roof were insulated with a standard flat roof insulation.Eagle GR100SA Self-adhesive VCL was laid over the insulation as a carrier membrane to ensure the liquid coating had a suitablesurface to bond to and to ensure all joints in the insulation were sealed, ready for liquid coating.Ultraflex was then laid, fully reinforced using a wet on wet system over the VCL at a rate of 1.5Kg/M2. Once cured a further0.5Kg/M2 Ultraflex was laid over the surface before finishing with Ultratop.BenefitsThis building was transformed without the need to completely replace the existing roof structure, preserving and protecting the building whilst saving cost by leaving the original roof in place. The new roof now has a minimum lifespan of 25 years and a 25year guarantee, backed by Eagle waterproofing.Standing water is no longer a problem on this roof and all outlets are now working correctly, reducing maintenance work required.PROJECT INFORMATION ConstructionSwimming PoolProducts UsedUltraflexTrimVCLVCL PrimerConstructorHurricane RoofingSupplierRinus Roofing, Bradford“The transformation of this building speaks for itself. IKO Permatec Hot Melt was used in the gutters and balconies where a bison slab was used for the deck. On the main roof area was a timber deck and the preferred system for this was a built-up bituminous membrane system. IKO Challenger 180 nailed layer, IKO Systems Torch-on Underlay and IKO Superflex Cap Sheet were installed. Difficult details were overcome by using IKO Polimar EC/UV cold liquid applied system, then a scattering of mineral was applied whilst still wet to provide a matching finish to the bituminous membrane.

A Flame-Free Solution to Reduce the Potential Fire Risk

IKO PLC

The project was to refurbish the roof and improve the drainage and insulation and bring it up to current building control standards. A thermographic survey of the roof was carried out by IKO, which confirmed that it was sound enough to have an overlay of IKO UXPL bituminous membrane rather than stripping it back and rebuilding. IKO UPXL was primarily chosen by the client for the 30 year guarantee. One section of the roof to be repaired was on top of dormers. Flame-free IKO UPXL membranes were used because of the potential fire risk of the abutting pitched tiled roof.
