Curved seating enhances school extension project

Ibstock Junior School is located in north Leicestershire. In recent years there has been a rise in the number of pupil intakes due to the amount of new housing development in the local area. Leicestershire County Council granted planning permission for an extension of the existing school to increase pupil capacity. The development comprises bright, energy efficient, modern teaching spaces. Furnitubes’ RailRoad Edge family was chosen as the external seating for the scheme, offering the opportunity for straight and curved configurations to suit the confined spaces available and designed to encourage social interaction amongst the pupils.

Modular seating for University of Leicester, Brookfield Campus

Brookfield is a recent acquisition that the University of Leicester is developing to offer supplementary and upgraded teaching facilities and office accommodation for support staff. When selecting seating for the scheme, landscape architects Barry Chinn Associates truly embraced the modular concept of RailRoad, so much so that the setting out of the perimeter planting beds was dictated by the seating sizes. Three separate seats were supplied, each comprising different radii modules that introduce a refreshing informality to the courtyard. The seating is further enhanced by the addition and informal placement of backrests, armrests and tablet surfaces.

Given the current imperative for socially distanced teaching space, it was fortuitous that the University of East Anglia had recently specified Style to install six moveable partitioning systems in various classrooms across the campus. Each Dorma Hüppe wall divides a classroom into two evenly sized areas that can cater for smaller bubbles of students. Boasting an incredible 55dB Rw acoustic integrity, concurrent lessons can run entirely undisturbed and, when a larger space is required for bigger groups of students, the rooms can be quickly and easily opened out.

When a branch of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) moved in to share the existing office of Ashfield District Council, the space needed a refurbishment to facilitate an efficient co-working space. The design was crucial to create zones for each organisation, while still maintaining an open plan layout. The flooring was a key aspect of this and global modular flooring manufacturer, Interface, provided a range of its latest products to create a striking design. New: Southern Salads reducing noise and light pollution with Jacksons Acoustic Barriers

A recent redevelopment of land across the busy A26 from Southern Salads of residential apartment blocks caused a number of complaints on the issue of noise and light pollution. As a proactive and responsible member of the community, the company specified 85m of Jakoustic® Plus acoustic barrier to help minimise the impact of their operations on local residents. The 4.5m high, 85m of Jakoustic® Plus specified for the North Eastern boundaries of the site is supported by base-plated galvanised steel I-beam posts and designed to achieve a 16.4 dB reduction in noise* from the site.

Faversham Linen Services are one of the leading commercial laundry service providers in the South East and recently moved into their 28,000ft2 state of the art factory. The factory is responsible for washing over 14 million garments every year and the company take great care to minimise their impact on the surrounding environment. With the disruption caused by industrial sized machines working long hours and HGV's going to and from the site throughout the day, Faversham Linen Services chose to install 76m of Jakoustic® Reflective Acoustic Barrier to help minimise the impact of their operations on local residents.

Situated at the heart of Hammersmith Town Centre in West London, the recently refurbished late 70’s building Glen House offers approximately 32,000 sq ft of high spec CAT A office space with a few perks like bike parking, showers and roof terrace. The clean lines of RIO Suspended enhance the exposed coffered slabs, adding bold visual feature and texture to the space. The bespoke ceiling lights are side-lit using a double satin diffuser, emitting soft comfortable light. 299 also supplied lighting for corridors and bathrooms.

The iconic Grade II listed building Sion Hall has been recently transformed to a modern 16,813 sq. ft high specification office space to suit a specific tenant. We supported the workplace specialist with product specification, lighting design and calculations. 3D visuals were created to support the client to visualise the complex space. The performance driven office luminaire Rio Suspended was used across the office for general lighting. Slim linear profile Leck was used in the SAS ceilings in the Tech room. The Nile Surface was used around the perimeter of the Oak room.

The 740 Waterside Drive, owned by Legal and General Property, is situated just off the main circuit and one of the lakes. This impressive 51,000 sq ft. building has recently undergone a major remodelling. The aim of this complete refurbishment was to create efficient office space of the very best quality. Our team worked closely with the design team at Hoare Lea and guided them with the linear LED lighting product selection process. Several product options were evaluated and supported with lighting calculations, before Lightnet’s linear LED profile Matric L4 was put forward.

The recent CAT B fitout for the pharmaceutical giant, Sanofi features 71,000 sq ft of high spec office space with fantastic views, cool breakout areas and fully serviced restaurant. The fifth largest drug manufacturer in the world, Sanofi appointed CBRE to find a new office space along the M4 corridor with the aim of merging the Guildford and Maidenhead offices into one.

True to the brand philosophy, the recently refurbished 5 storey 71-73 Carter Lane offers a design led mixture of private suites, self contained floors, shared space, meeting rooms and amenities with a bold personality. The design brief was calling for suspended linear lighting to work with the exposed ceilings and services. The RIO Suspended was used as the main office luminaire throughout the whole scheme. In the circulation and breakout areas on Ground floor the Nile Suspended was used behind the mesh ceilings. The tubular pendant NILE has an industrial feel and works really well in this context.

Premium City CAT A Office Fitout. 80 Cannon Street, London.

Originally built in 1972-76, this distinctive landmark in the city of London has recently undergone a substantial refurbishment, transforming the building into a 50,000 sq ft high-end office space. Our team played a crucial role in delivering this premium city ‘cat a’ fit-out with an industrial feel. Full lighting design and calculations were produced alongside renders of the space to help visualise the effect of the new lighting. The suspended linear profile, Lopen in custom length was used to run alongside the edges of the plaster board to provide sufficient illumination of the workplace.

It moved to its last site in Belvedere in the mid-1960s and has recently moved again to a new £20m campus in Erith. ‘The overall look of the new college was extremely important from the offset, Martin Peat, Vice Principal of Finance and Resources explains,'.The finish quality of the decoration is also important as the College provides a professional facility in keeping with modern environments. Martin chose Bushboard’s Profiles toilet cubicle range, a robust and hardwearing system which features individual head rails for style and durability.

With limited vertical wall space for windows, Denizen Works utilised Glazing Visions’ fixed Flushglaze rooflights to flood the living spaces with light in their recently built housing scheme, Haddo Yard. The project, on the site of a former bungalow, is located in Whitstable, Kent and takes its name from Oliver Haddo, a character in former resident Somerset Maugham’s novel, ‘The Magician’. Haddo Yard forms part of a series of projects initiated by developer Arrant Land, that seek to explore how a town with a distinct visual identity can be enhanced by adventurous but contextual contemporary design.

Architect David Nossiter’s sensitive conversion of a derelict, yet heritage-listed farm barn building on the Suffolk/Essex border into an exceptional family home has recently won ‘Restoration of the Year’ at Sunday Times British Homes Awards 2017, as well as being named as a finalist in the AJ’s Retrofit Awards 2017. A sympathetic synergy of the historical and the contemporary, Church Hill Barn offers spacious living in a beautiful rural setting. We were recently commissioned to carrying out an extensive Resin Bound and Resin Bonded surfacing project as part of an extensive renovation at a fabulous property in the heart of the Staffordshire countryside. In keeping with the mix of modern and traditional style on this renovation, large areas of Resin Bound porous Decra®Set paving were laid by our in-house installation team to the access driveway and property frontage. To add variety and texture, further decorative surfacing was installed to garden and woodland areas by way of our Resin Bonded Decra®Stone surfacing.

We recently completed an installation where a custom version of our ThinkingWall was required to create frameless whole wall magnetic blackboards as part of a larger scheme. The project, for Network Rail, was part of a full office refurbishment where our experienced team of fitters installed 16 ThinkingWall’s throughout the office development including the magnetic blackboards seen here. The scheme included a mix of our usual gloss white panels for use with whiteboard marker pens along with the matte black panels to act as chalkboards. This mix added a nice touch of variety.

Posi-Rafters - the ideal solution

DWB Hull, a licensed MiTek roof truss and Posi-Joist manufacturer, recently supplied specially designed Posi-Rafters to form the roof for a large domestic extension. Bespoke end details were incorporated into the Posi-Rafter design to make installation straightforward and to provide solid bearings on to the steel beams and walls. The build had two steel ridge purlins and a central steel at ceiling level, forming a large vaulted ceiling internally. Posi-Rafters were the ideal choice, with plated end blocks sitting directly on to the steel beams with no need for hangers.

A recent project saw us working alongside main contractors GHI and architects, Michael Laird in Edinburgh. KPMG’s new Edinburgh headquarters concluded after a period of regenerative construction and development, split between 2 phases. The intention to reflect the history and people which make Edinburgh an iconic city. Phase one included creating a space for employees to work as employee wellness was at the forefront of design during this phase. When working on phase two, we installed partitions to the cafés and client suites. KPMG’s objective is to have an environment ‘that encourages interaction, collaboration and communication’.

In the former offices of media giant The Guardian, in a building dubbed The Ray, a newly imagined set of offices is now complete. The Ray is now home to one of the most prevalent business-orientated social media websites in the world, LinkedIn. Walk the surrounding area to find London headquarters of major players such as Tesco, Kurt Geiger and Save the Children UK. In keeping with this, The Ray’s latest update boasts some of the most adventurous bespoke design in recent years.

Bloot Architecture, a concept-driven architectural practice located in the Netherlands, has recently specified P C Henderson’s Husky 100 sliding door system for the renovation of a luxury villa. After falling in love with the beautiful and picturesque surroundings of the National Park Veluwezoom in Holland, the architecture firms client purchased a dilapidated 1950’s villa in order to live in their dream location. What ensued was a sustainable refurbishment and extension project – key features included the creation of open plan living, full of natural light, with the inclusion of a flexible office space built on via an extension.

High design luxury vinyl tile flooring from Polyflor’s Expona Commercial collection was recently chosen as part of a sophisticated and stylish interior design scheme for Handbag Clinic in Islington, London. Handbag Clinic specialises in the care, repair and restoration of designer handbags and leather fashion accessories, as well as selling preowned luxury goods in their handbag boutique. The design scheme for the Islington branch refurbishment was created by Aubury Design, a Newcastle-based interior design service. Expona Commercial luxury vinyl tiles in the Crème Swirl design were selected for the shop floor area.

Heavy commercial Affinity255 PUR luxury vinyl tiles from Polyflor were recently chosen to complete the stylish interior design scheme at The LiquorLab, a new cocktail bar at the Southwater development in Telford, Shropshire. The LiquorLab is Southwater’s first cocktail bar, with a laidback, industrial inspired design scheme created by local commercial kitchen and interior fit out company Catering Centre UK. Affinity255 PUR luxury vinyl tiles in the Huckleberry Oak shade were installed in the lounge, seating and bar areas to create an inviting space for customers to socialise in.

Hardwearing luxury vinyl tiles from Polyflor’s Expona Design range were recently installed at the busy Klein Architects offices in Auckland, New Zealand. The Dark Grey Concrete design was chosen for the new office fit out. The flooring was installed by Comfloor flooring contractors. Ricky Lam, Senior Associate at Klein Architects commented, “This design was chosen, as it has a similar visual texture and colour as polished concrete while retaining its integrity as a unique aesthetic. The tile format means individual modules can be easily replaced if damaged."

Prestigious Bradley Hall Golf Club is located in over 60 acres of picturesque parkland in central Yorkshire. Golf was first played here in 1906 and considerable investment was spent converting the old house into an outstanding club house. Recently the golf club had a major building upgrade but still retained the quality that had been set up all those years ago. As part of this refurbishment the central entrance of the golf club required an impressive eye catching finish to their traditional style Victorian staircase with a unique large curved bottom step.

As part of the Willows and Patricroft projects, Watson Homes selected Richard Burbidge’s Fusion Outdoor Juliette Balconies to provide the perfect balance between practicality and aesthetics. The Willows development comprises of new homes, bungalows and 21 apartments. The second project, Patricroft is located in Salford, comprises 36 new build apartments. Richard Burbidge’s Fusion Outdoor Juliette Balconies have helped to enhance the exterior of the developments, creating a welcoming environment and safe access for residents.

Ingenious Flexible Space Design from Style

Drawing on over 20 years of experience installing operable walls, Style was recently challenged to come up with a solution to divide a large meeting area, despite there being no suitable structure in the ceiling to utilise as a fixing point. After some lateral thinking and close communication with the client, a non-structural timber frame was created for support, with the weight of the folding wall being transferred to the ground via a surface mounted floor track. A Stylefold 120 folding wall system was chosen as the only operable wall that could realistically accommodate the room structure.

Big Portuguese flavours demanded an equally striking floor at the recently opened Soho Nando’s. For this unique space, Nando’s commissioned a bespoke floor that combined rhombi in tones of brown and smoky grey, with accents of copper leaf. The result was a striking floor in an eye catching design. Handmade and hand finished to specification in our Cheshire workshops, our team worked closely with STAC Architecture to design and create the floor to a tight deadline. 20mm and 2-ply thick, the floor was hand finished with naked skin lacquer for a natural yet extremely durable look.
