DCM Surfaces installs synthetic surfacing at Butlins new pool complex in Bognor Regis.The project, which took two years to complete, accommodates almost 1,000 guests and has unique seaside and fairground-themed rides, a wave pool and a special area for toddlers.Kier was the successful bidder for the contract. Following a rigorous selection process based on quality, cost and Health and Safety, selected DCM Surfaces to install synthetic surfacing for three main areas around the complex.DCM Surfaces was in a unique position to deliver all elements of synthetic surfacing, which included the installation of an Artificial Grass safety surface, Resin Bound Gravel pathway, and Rubber Mulch, which was used to fill several tree pits. A core requirement of the installation was that each surface would be permeable, allowing water to drain through and ensure that it could be used all year round.A Rubber Shockpad was installed beneath the Artificial Grass to give children a soft, impact-absorbing layer to run and play with.The installation, completed on March 19, covered an area of over 1000 sqm.

As part of a £50million group investment, the prestigious Colchester club needed 3,500m2 of tiling to cover the swimming pools, changing rooms, walkways and reception areas. Cambridge Terrace is a row of Grade 1 Listed Regency homes, designed in the early 19th century by John Nash, the architect of Buckingham Palace. The developer aims to convert the properties into a “super mansion” complete with a large underground leisure complex comprising of a pool, bar, cinema, jacuzzi and a car lift from street level to the basement car park. When completed, the new development is expected to be worth £200 million.

We installed more than 16,000 square meters of stretch ceilings at Aspire Stadium in Doha, one of the stadiums that was built to host the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Project: Cast GRC concrete bespoke floating steps and concrete tiles for private residence in CobhamMaterials used: GRC concrete with hydrophobic agent and stain proof finishThe Living Concrete team were commissioned to design and create 180 square metres of large format exterior concrete tiles to surround the pool area, patio and paths of an exclusive private residence in Cobham.Working closely with the client, we drew up plans which also involved a cascade of floating steps to create seamless access on what was quite a difficult tiered site. Having assessed all the practical and logistical issues, we worked out a tight schedule of measuring, landscaping, pre-cast and on-site casting and, finally, staged installation of all the elementsas well as laying the pool area and surrounds, we undertook on-site casting of fair-faced concrete garden walls in our Storm-coloured plain Rough finish.This project had many challenges in its design and execution and covered a large external area on different levels incorporating very heavy concrete elements – creating this stunning feature.

This wonderfully designed project by Spaced Out Architecture incorporates the Topakustik 30/2M in American Walnut. Installed by T & M Building Services the Topakustik 30/2M planks (absorption class c, NRC 0.75) were manufactured with a moisture resistant core board and finished with an American Walnut veneer. Due to the environment of projects with spas and swimming pools the core board ensures the integrity of the structure and acoustic performance of the planks.

West Dunbartonshire Council began plans to combine local primary schools and pool resources in a 53,280 sq ft, £16.5 million development. They bought St Kessog’s Primary and Balloch Primary into one place, along with an additional support needs unit and early learning and childcare centre. In April 2010 the Tepid Baths closed for repairs and a major makeover. As part of this renovation project Accoya® wood was chosen for its durability and stability especially for its use in wet and humid environments such as swimming pools. New Zealand distributor, Timspec supplied the Accoya wood which was used for the changing room doors, seats and frames. At nearly 100 years old, the building will remain a great place to swim for the next 50 years.

Orbis OS211 Glass Infill Top FixOrbis OS231 Perforated Infill Top FixOrbis OS200/OS201 Vertical Bar InfillBorn from Havering Council’s vision to improve the sports and fitness facilities available in the borough, the £28 million investment is set to be a catalyst for regeneration in Romford.Named in honour of the Sapphire anniversary of Queen Elizabeth ll’s reign, the centre comprises of an eight-lane competition pool, gymnasium and first floor 56m by 26m ice rink.Appointed by contractors Willmott Dixon, Delta Balustrades were responsible for the supply of 579m’s of balustrading and 246m’s of handrails throughout the entire complex.With two extreme environments coexisting the specifications for the balustrade finishes were of upmost importance.Balustrades and handrails in the warm, chlorine filled air of the swimming pool environment received our Ultra (Marine) finish, providing a bright polished surface to prevent corrosion.First floor ice rink balustrades received our HiBuild powder coating finish, which boasts a ‘warm to touch’ feature that doesn’t allow the transfer a cold environment to bare hands.A visually striking, stainless steel staircase with perforated panels connects the floors within the ceiling void atrium spanning four floors.

Inspired by and integrated within the natural landscape around it, the River Building at Grace Farms, which was designed by SANAA, gently slopes, bends and ‘pools’ with its surroundings.For a place in which people gather to experience nature, encounter the arts, pursue justice, foster community and explore faith, the use of glass, steel, concrete and wood is particularly fitting. In the building’s bathrooms, d line sanitary ware was used for its simple lines and the natural rawness of its material.

A new £13.5million sports and swimming complex in Blackburn town centre has been constructed to replace the ageing Waves Water Fun Centre. The joint project between Blackburn with Darwen Council and Blackburn College will provide for students and residents swimming pools but also a larger fitness suite, a dance/ aerobics studio, sauna and steam room and two sports halls. The scheme, partly-based on Darwen Leisure Centre, will reduce the running costs of the existing Waves complex and reduce the subsidy.

Luxury boutique hotel Sir Joan, located in Ibiza Town, houses 12 hotel rooms and 2 rooftop suites with private pools and stunning views of the port of Ibiza. The black and white façade combines traditional and current Ibizan architecture. The openings in the façade offer privacy to guests and create natural ventilation and lighting. This stunning aesthetic was achieved using Reynaers CF 77 and CP 155(-LS) sliding and folding door systems, and CS 68 aluminium window systems.

The new Abraham Darby Academy was developed as part of Telford’s Building Schools for the Future scheme. It is a state-of-the-art teaching facility, designed for the 21st century, for pupils aged from 4 to 18, with a new primary school and leisure facility on the site. The Academy provides teaching space for 1,100 students, plus a sixth form facility, and the primary school can accommodate 400 pupils. The leisure centre includes a swimming pool, a four-court sports hall, fitness suite and changing facilities.

House Builder, Prestige Homes, built a high spec swimming pool and gym situated within a housing development. Premium hard landscaping was required to complement the contemporary leisure facility.Tobermore provided complimentary design support and product samples which helped client decision making. The developer opted for Tobermore’s landscape proposal of Braemar and Artro paving accompanied by Fusion Kerb. Cool contemporary greys were selected as a colour palette to add to the project’s modern aesthetic.

Wakefield has had a sporting boost with the construction of its new Minsthorpe Leisure Centre which was opened February 2018, after the 14-month project was completed on schedule. Facilities at the centre include a 25m, six-lane swimming pool, a 60-station health and fitness club and a group exercise studio.The project cladding design underwent a value engineering programme and the originally specified product was changed to include our Trimapanel® smooth faced insulated panels for the external building envelope.

Working in partnership with Alliance Leisure, through the UK Leisure Framework, the council will create a vibrant modern hub for residents and workers to enjoy a range of physical activities.The ChallengePropose a system suitable for a wet, high humidity environment including Cubicles, Ducts, Vanities, Lockers & Benches. Ensure the material used and the system proposed is suitable for a high traffic environment. Changing cubicle divisions to have increased height at the rear of the cubicle to prevent users standing on the bench and peering over. Fully framed cubicles to be free standing & self-supporting, positioned in centre of the changing area. Create a locker area suitable for use by wheelchair users. The SolutionSolid Grade Laminate was used throughout the scheme. 12mm core boards, self-supporting, highly durable and impervious to water penetration.Hydroline system installed as a fully framed island constructed cubicle with profiled division panels at 2400mm.

With architecture by renowned architects Squire & Partners, this development comprises an approved scheme of 672 residential apartments with 24-hour concierge and business lounge, 25m pool, spa, gym, cinema room, entrance lobbies and receptions, private gardens. Servicing and parking for 286 vehicles is arranged over two basement levels. Effisus Vapour FR membrane Class A1 was chosen to protect the insulation and building interior.

Blyth Sports Centre in Sunderland has undergone a creative £5m refurbishment redeveloping it as a ‘wellness hub’. Works include a new state-of-the-art gym and spa together with a modernised pool and changing areas. Designed by JDDK Architects with main contractors Brims Construction, Helmsman Lockers and Cubicles designed, supplied and installed a range of lockers and seating in both the spa and dry areas of the centre. Both sets of leisure lockers were 2-compartment using a Teak and Spring White laminate finish and complemented with matching bench seating.

The outer walls were constructed using blockwork and then rendered using KEIM Universal Render, which is an extremely flexible render system, negating the needs for expansion joints which would look unsightly on the impressive building. The render was then painted using KEIM Soldalit which combines durability with breathability, ensuring the system will last for many years. The swimming pools ceilings were also plastered using KEIM Universal Render but the fine version for a smooth finish, and decorated with KEIM Soldalit to give a high performance finish in such a humid environment.

Overlooking the Vale of Evesham in an area of outstanding beauty, the brand-new Wood Norton Care Village is more than just a residential home. Featuring 48 village apartments, a 60-bedroom care home and a whole host of amenities – including restaurants, bars, shops and a cinema, as well as a leisure centre, spa and swimming pool – the Wood Norton Care Village encompasses an entire community. The complete interior and exterior decoration at the new facility required a number of premium quality paints from Johnstone's Trade.

Meca Welding, a small family run Blacksmith company based in Belgium, has recently specified P C Henderson’s Securefold folding door hardware for the renovation of a pool house at a residential property in Shilde, Belgium. The project brief required a system which could be fully opened during the warmer months and securely closed off during the winter – whilst also considering the architectural style and design aesthetics of the building. P C Henderson’s Securefold 100 exterior folding door hardware was identified as the best solution for the project.

The Heartlands world heritage site was the result of the long held ambition to redevelop the site of Robinsons tin mine shaft near Pool in West Cornwall. When choosing materials for this feature the colour choice was obvious. After considering several red options the choice was made to use an specific all red Porphyry. The material is very consistently red and the flame texturing required to make this safe for pedestrians has little effect on the colour. When wet the red stone is further enhanced and becomes a truly red river.

This luxurious residential project incorporated a double level basement with the lower level extending out underneath the garden. In regards to the below ground structure Knowles & Associates Ltd undertook the following works: Excavation and formation of a basement to footprint and under 7 metres below garden level. Two/three stage underpinning. Internal steel staircase frame. Piling. Mass excavation of spoil. Construction of rear extension. Below slab drainage. Cavity drain Waterproofing. Insulation and screed. Swimming pool shell within lower level basement.

In order to protect the façade building from moisture, driving rain and wind the solution Effisus A2 Fire Rated Breather FR System was applied.

Kirkby Stephen Business Park is the brainchild of two local farmers, who pooled their energy, investment and resources to build new, bright, modern units for local businesses. They chose Steeldor for the new office units, balancing the need for security without compromising on looks.The Park, which enjoys wonderful views of the Pennine Hills and surrounding countryside, is close to the centre of the Cumbrian market town. Nestled between the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, those who work and play in Kirkby Stephen are no strangers to the outstanding natural beauty that surrounds them.

The McLaren Technology Centre hosts a variety of diverse environments including; manufacturing facilities, a futuristic wind tunnel, restaurant, pool, gymnasium, museum, visitor centre, and exhibition and conference areas. Surespan was chosen to design and engineer the making of a 70m diameter glazed roof structure that would act as the roof for the visitor's centre. The structure has two fire escape hatches which would be used in the case of an emergency. The team at Surespan were proud to have been selected for such a project because of their superior engineering expertise and unique skills.

Hydrotherapy has always been on the agenda at Vranch House, but this vital treatment has recently been given a new lease of life with a completely refurbished state-of-the-art indoor heated swimming pool, including Altro Whiterock hygienic wall sheet. “The walling choices were integral to this vision. Altro was a key partner on the project because they were sympathetic to the broader picture and what we wanted to achieve for the children. Their level of experience and understanding helped us to find a solution that delivered across the board; on quality, safety, aesthetics and durability.

UltraScape Pro-Bed HS, Pro-Prime and Flowpoint ECO are being used to help make Bradford’s City Park a world class public park. Bradford Council, in conjunction with landscape architect Gillespies and consulting engineer Arup, have specified UltraScape’s Pro-Bed HS Bedding Mortar, Pro-Prime Slurry Primer, EP-R9 Epoxy Bedding Mortar and Flowpoint ECO flowable grout – in Natural and Charcoal – for use by the main contractor Birse Civils, to lay the setts, porphyry and sandstone in and around the Mirror Pool.

LAMILUX designed, supplied and installed eight LAMILUX Glass Roof PR60 mono-pitch rooflights at Oundle School Sports Centre. Seven of the rooflights, were positioned over the 50 metre swimming pool, adding an abundance of natural light, with special sun protective glazing to eliminate overheating. A special coating was applied to the aluminium profiles to protect them from corrosion within the chlorine environment. The eighth rooflight, an 18m x 6m trapeze shape, illuminates the atrium at the flagship of the school’s sports masterplan.

Falco recently manufactured, supplied and installed four bays of FalcoSpan cycle canopy for the new £15m Ellesmere Port Sports Leisure Village in Cheshire!The FalcoSpan cycle canopy was chosen for it’s light and spacious design providing maximum accessibility but great cycle coverage. The shelter was powder coated in RAL 9005 Jet Black to both increase durability and match the colour scheme of the leisure centre. Additionally hard wood cladding was added to the legs to soften the feel of the shelters and maintain a coherent theme of the overall design. For cycle parking, below ground fix Sheffield stands provide secure accommodation for up to 40 bikes.Ellesmere Port Sports Leisure Village is the prestigious leading regeneration project for Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC). CWAC has a forward thinking cycling policy and this installation provides real support towards that strategy. The development has been co-funded by Sport England on the site of the former Stanney High School and is home to a new purpose built sports and leisure facilities including an 8no lane 25m pool, separate teaching pool, 8 court sports hall to National Premier League Basketball standards with 1400 retractable seats, dance and exercise studios, gymnasium, spinning zone, wet and dry changing areas and café. The new state-of-the-art development is part of a £70m investment in leisure facilities across the borough.

An openair swimming pool of a design described as the finest in England is being restored to its former elegance with Crittall windows playing a significant role.Saltdean Lido, some five miles east of Brighton, is a Grade II* listed Art Deco masterpiece built in 1938 utilising an innovative reinforced concrete structure designed by architect Richard Jones. It is one of only three Grade II* listed lidos in the country and has been on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk register for many years.The structure epitomises the essence of the modernist movement with sweeping lines designed to elevate Saltdean’s status as a resort. In its heyday, immediately before the Second World War, holidaymakers and local residents would flock to it paying sixpence to swim and to sunbathe on the adjacent lawns.After the war, during which it was used for Fire Service training, it lay derelict until restored by Brighton Borough Council and stayed in use until the late 1990s when local people banded together to defeat a developer’s plan to demolish the lido and build apartments on the site.A Community Interest Company campaigned successfully to have the pool brought back into use which was achieved in 2017. Now it was the turn of the buildings currently being restored by Buxton Building Contractors of Surrey.Once completed the building will house an Art Deco event space, suitable for weddings, an exercise studio, library, community hub, café and heritage learning zone plus workspace.A key element of the design is the generous area of glazing facing the pool. Here will be installed Crittall Homelight Plus steel windows that replicate the original fenestration and, because of the slender frames, maximise the benefits of natural light on this bright coastal location.The windows are also hot dipped galvanised to prevent corrosion and Duralife coated with marine grade polyester powder which will offer the highest level of protection against the aggressive wind-borne sea salts that caused damage to the original building.Duncan Wilson, Historic England’s Chief Executive, commented: “The handsome Saltdean Lido was inspired by contemporary ocean liner and aircraft design and is architecturally probably the finest in England.”Once completed, thanks to the streamlined white concrete surfaces and the sparkling Crittall windows, the building will once more provide, quite literally, a shining example of its genre.
