12mm Magply serves as fireproof sarking for new build thatched property

IPP Ltd

Widely specified for its fire resistance and all round stability in the cladding build-up to apartment blocks as well as a render backer and sheathing board, IPP’s highly versatile Magply boards have been employed by a regional developer as a fireproof sarking board beneath taditional thatched roofing for a development in a beautiful Dorset village. The 12mm thick version of the high performance MgO material was selected by Poole based Charlew Developments, to comply with the project architect’s performance specification for the solitary thatched roof building on a nine house scheme in the village of Owermoigne, near Dorchester. Reflecting an aesthetic ethos similar to that adopted for Prince Charles’ landmark Poundbury development on the outskirts of Dorchester, local planners made the inclusion of a thatched property a stipulation of planning permission for the development and the exterior to the four bedroom dwelling also includes panels of flint-work between the bands of handmade brick which form the window surrounds. The thatch was installed by specialist roofing company, RV Miller from Keynes Wareham in Dorset. The overall roof construction saw the 12mm Magply boards being nailed down across the main rafters and covered by a breather membrane before battens were secured in the conventional manner, running across the pitches. The authentic reed thatch was then laid up the pitch and shaped around the eyebrow dormers at the roof edge and verges. “The project architects, Anders Roberts, specified the use of a one hour fire resisting board to be installed beneath the thatch covering. I researched a number of different board types before talking to our merchant, Travis Perkin, which recommended the Magply product. We have found the boards very straightforward to cut and fix before covering them with the breather membrane and battens.” Site agent for Charlew Developments, Jules Peach Backed by BDA Agrement certification, Magply MgO boards present a fire-safe and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional plywood or OSB products. The different thicknesses of panel are also widely used as a substrate board for flooring and flat or pitched roof build-ups as well as render systems.
Bespoke Oak Versailles Parquet Flooring

Bespoke Oak Versailles Parquet Flooring

The Solid Wood Flooring Company

For the beautiful penthouse atop one of the buildings in South Bank Place, located next to the London Eye, the designers wanted a feature floor with a bespoke colour finish. We worked with the designers at Goddard Littlefair and decided on the timeless design of the Versailles parquet pattern. The designers wanted a show-stopping colour for this floor. We created the Belvedere colour finish; using a mixture of fumed, European Oak and pigmented hard wax oils to create a dark colour tone with red and golden highlights. To ensure a uniform and quick installation on site; we creating metre square panels with the Solid Oak Versailles pattern positioned by hand onto Birch plywood backing. Having discussed the fit-out process in detail with the fit-out team from SJ Eastern Joinery, we grooved all four sides of the panel and supplied the tongues loose. This gave the fitters flexibility to lay the boards as they saw fit on site. Once we had assembled the panels, the bespoke colour finish was applied; after completing multiple coats the panels were stored to fully cure and harden.Once the team from SJ Eastern had fitted the flooring on site, they protected it with a soft breathable cover and topped that with hardboard and taped the edges. This allowed the other trades to snag without damaging the floor. Once snagging was complete, the floor protection was removed. As anyone who has been on a building site knows, dust and debris are everywhere and sure enough the flooring needed a final clean and buff with oil to increase the lustre and make it perfect for the wow factor needed in such a stunning project. The expert team lead by Bardhyl Miskiqi of BRB Flooring came in and cleaned the floor thoroughly, removing plaster dust and other debris by vacuum and cleaning the floor down using a solution of Blanchon Natural Soap and hot water. Once the floor was suitably clean, they applied Blanchon Hard Wax Oil Satin on to the floor and buffed a coat into the floor using a buffing machine equipped with a white buffing pad. This fed the Oak another coat of oil which bolsters the protection against every day use and increased the lustre of the wood highlighting all the colours from that bespoke colour that had been applied at the factory.Once the oil was properly buffed in, the penthouse door was closed and the floor left to dry and cure. Once curing had completed the furniture was placed in the room and made ready for viewing by the client and new owner and a lifetime of happy memories. Please call 01666 504015 for more information.
FIRE RESISTANCE AND STABILITY EARN REDCLIFF QUARTER SPECIFICATION FOR MAGPLY UNDER ZINC

FIRE RESISTANCE AND STABILITY EARN REDCLIFF QUARTER SPECIFICATION FOR MAGPLY UNDER ZINC

IPP Ltd

Fire performance, chemical composition and resistance to pull-out loads were all factors considered by one of the leading national contractors in the selection of Magply MOS boards for the cladding build-up on four apartment blocks in Bristol. The development in the historic dock city’s Redcliff Quarter conservation area is being led by Galliford Try for developer, Redcliff Quarter MLP with the designs of Lyons+Sleeman+Hoare Architects combining new build structures and elevations with retained Victorian brick façades. The initial description of the building was for phase 1 (114 apartments + 14 duplex). Redcliff Quarter Phase 2 is the construction of 118 apartments which is a mix of 1 and 2 bedroom apartments with 4no retail units along cross street. The facades are a mix of Recon Stone Panels, Brickwork, composite cladding and El-zinc Cladding. The cladding contractor is responsible for installing all of the El-zinc cladding on the project, utilising VM Zinc clips to attach the very distinctive and lightweight material over a sub-structure of steel framing, the 12mm thick Magply boards and a breather membrane.Due to the El-zinc material only being 1mm thick added support was required to prevent the capping from bending out of shape. Traditionally this would be ply, however due to the requirement for all materials to be A2 fire rated in buildings over 18mm ply was not a suitable product. Magply was used in its place due to its property’s.The Externals Manager for Galliford Try, Martin Sykes, commented: “The main area of use for the Magply boards on this project is within the build-up for the ‘picture frame’ type feature around the main entrance, where we have secondary steelwork and Metsec frame to build out from the main structure. However, because the chosen cladding material is VM Zinc you have to be very careful about the chemical composition of what it is in contact with, to avoid degradation. We considered a number of different board types to meet the required fire-rating, but Magply’s PH level proved to be more compatible with the zinc, while the manufacturer was also able to supply satisfactory data on pull-out tests, to ensure the stability for the cladding brackets. The boards, covered by the breather membrane, are also being used beneath all the capping on the building, mounted between the galvanised supports, enabling the contractor to complete all their installation work.”Backed by BDA Agrement certification, Magply MOS boards present a fire-safe and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional plywood or OSB products. Additionally, the unique production process keeps the chloride content to just 0.01%, enhancing both stability and long-term durability. The different thicknesses of panel are also widely used as a substrate board for the direct application of proprietary render systems, as well as for flooring and flat or pitched roof build-ups.
