A stunning ‘roundhouse’ curved garage door, built as part of a project to renovate and extend a Grade II listed property, provides a new perspective on the design, purpose and visual appeal of an exceptional British garage. The project at the large family home in Surrey encompassed internal alterations, restoration of a five metre high bay window to the main house and the creation of a four bay garage. The garage’s purpose, usage and desired appearance meant fusing traditional design with contemporary solutions, with Rundum Meir tailor-made garage doors being key to delivering on the architects’ vision.

A wedding venue that showcases a Historic England perfectly has been transformed using Johnstone’s decorative paints. Specified for its high quality finish and whiteness properties, Johnstone’s Covaplus Vinyl Matt in off-white was used to paint the elegant hallway of the grade 1 listed building. As well as being applied on the walls and ceilings of the spectacular reception. Johnstone’s Acrylic Durable Matt was used in the food and bar area, due to its outstanding durability. Additionally, Johnstone’s Satin Woodstain was used on the hand rails of the balconies to protect the wood from decay.

The door not only eliminates cold draughts but due to the in floor heater also provides a warm welcome to the guests. The door leaves also automatically fold open in an emergency to allow the guests to leave the hotel quickly.

The name ‘clipper’ refers to the fast sailing ships of the nineteenth century that navigated the world’s major trading routes bringing tea crop from China. Now listed by National Historic Ships as part of the National Historic Fleet, and preserved as a museum ship. . AATi were on hand to create replica cast metal stair nosings using originals from the ship, over time, they have severely worn down to a dangerous condition. With a few performance enhancing tweaks to the original design, AATi were able to increase the longevity of these unique stair nosings and created fantastic replicas.

Built in the 1950’s, the College in Eastgate, Hornsea was in need of extensive external refurbishment in order to bring the school up to modern thermal efficiency standards, address building defects and improve its aesthetics. Initiated by East Riding of Yorkshire Council Infrastructure and Facilities and overseen by Hall Construction, the eight-month refurbishment project included the replacement of rainwater and eaves systems along its flat roofline that are guaranteed to last the entire 40 year estimated life span of the building.

The external social areas were brought to life with 14 Plateau Picnic Tables, creating a vibrant space suitable for studying and socialising, with the connected benches seating up to 12 people. The Clement Windows Group has manufactured and installed steel windows from its W20 range for the Comet Works in Birmingham’s Princip Street. The original warehouse buildings in the city’s former Gun Quarter have been converted by building re-animator Javelin Block into 20 impressive residential units, including lofts, apartments and mews houses. The Clement W20 range was specified for its ability to provide an almost exact match to the existing metal windows while offering modern advantages such as double glazing and a very long-lasting polyester powder paint coating requiring minimal maintenance.

Bonhams is a fabulously idiosyncratic 1930s building, situated on prestigious New Bond Street, in West London. The building is Art Deco in style, listed and within a Conservation Area. Architects Lifschutz Davidson & Sandilands led a £30million restoration project and sensitivity was key. The work included replacing the original steel windows on the front elevation facing Woodstock Street and Blenheim Street. Clement W20 steel windows were chosen to match the design of the existing windows. The new windows were fitted with toughened, laminated glass and silicone fronted using dark bronze silicone (to replicate the early putty fronting).

Brintons created bespoke rugs for key public areas and guest rooms within the Hotel Indigo Stratford-Upon-Avon as part of an extensive £13.2 million restoration project.

Tobacco Dock is a Grade I listed warehouse in the Docklands area of London’s East End. Tobacco Dock is regularly used for large corporate and commercial events. The London Borough of Tower Hamlets required a solution to prevent any further damage to the buildings historic façade which had previously been spoiled by overcrowded parking. Furnitubes supplied 15 Pergone® gabion planters, installed to create welcoming gaps between parking bays alongside the building. The new installations have been planted with shrubs and decorative grasses as an attractive contrast to the surrounding built environment.

The Grade I listed Round Tower (dating from the 1400’s) is a fortification at the entrance to Portsmouth harbour it overhangs the Portsmouth sea front making it susceptible to coastal weather. It’s current waterproofing system needed replacing, The IKO Permaphalt System was chosen due to the 20 year guarantee it offered and the previous heritage projects IKO have successfully helped preserve with various waterproof solutions. Existing coverings were removed and replaced by Southern Flat Roofing & Pitched Roofing Ltd, providing a surface that would withstand constant foot traffic as well as the weather that many seafront structures suffer from.

The Caledonian in Inverness is a 19th Century, Grade A Listed Public House. The sandstone surfaces were previously painted with approximately 8-10 layers of paint – some areas had been stripped and in other areas existing paint coatings remained. For the deep repairs to the sandstone, we recommended using KEIM Restauro Grund and for the finishing layer over the repairs, we advised using KEIM Restauro Top, which was dress back in a manner to suit the surrounding stonework. To give an opaque matt finish, we specified KEIM Soldalit in the same colour as the KEIM Restauro Top.

Riversfield is a large detached Grade B listed town house. This property had severe contamination of moss and algae. We recommended that the climbing plants and wall shrubs to be moved away from the surfaces prior to the decoration of KEIM. We then advised that any existing fungal growth must be thoroughly removed using wire brushes to remove all growths and then all areas were to be treated with KEIM Algicid. Onto the cement based, roughcast surfaces, a three coat KEIM Royalan system was used to provide a colourfast, longlife, breathable, protective and decorative mineral matt finish.

Millworks worked with Devlin Architects to deliver a mix of factory finished painted, fire protected and natural weathered Thermowood (Redwood) cladding. Thermowood was chosen due to the stability and ability to take a consistent painted finish, giving a longer service life. Vacuum coating gives the timber a consistent finish on all four sides. Constructed in the early 80s by Arup Associates, 1 Finsbury Avenue has been carefully redeveloped as part of its evolution from single occupancy into a mixed-use offering. Behind the grade 2 listed bronze façade, work included the re-establishment of pedestrian access through the ground floor to reconnect the building with Finsbury Avenue Square and the wider neighbourhood. The bright, bold work of artist Morag Myerscough featured in this lower atrium echoes the lines of the façade. To match the interior aesthetic, black anodised INTRAflow entrance matting was specified for both East and West entrances.

Paul Ursell of HC Moss (Builders) Ltd explained the benefits of using Neaco’s structural glass: “We incorporated frameless bi-fold doors and needed to match this with frameless glass balustrade affording a seamless outlook over the river. Neaco’s structural glass balustrade forms part of the £10m project’s signature feature: a new central atrium which brings natural light into the heart of the building. An automatic toilet, a remote shower system as well as a full body warm air drying system were also included in the annex,providing Sam with a fully automated bathroom experience.

Thermal and acoustic insulation secondary glazing was installed by Selectaglaze for the National Trust as part of a full-scale refurbishment at the Grade I Listed Belton House stable block in Grantham, Lincolnshire, which has been converted into restaurant and office space. Selectaglaze Series 10 horizontal sliders were specified for 24 of the original leaded windows in the offices, and meeting rooms. Custom made timber grounds were affixed to all the openings which were splayed or out of shape. As a result of the installation, thermal efficiency has improved considerably, with the added benefit of increased acoustic insulation.

The Grade II* Listed Blue Mills in Witham, Essex was recorded in Domesday as the water mill at Benton Hall, a subsidiary manor of Blunts in Witham. The owners have lived in Blue Mills for 20 years and reached out to Selectaglaze for advice on secondary glazing treatments for their primary windows; a mixture of timber sash windows, fixed lights and inward/outward opening casements. 22 windows were treated using a number of window styles: fixed light, vertical sliding and side-hung casements. Selectaglaze is the leading specialist in secondary glazing, established in 1966 and Royal Warrant Holder since 2004.

A four-storey underground car park needs to meet enormous fire protection requirements. Preventive fire and smoke protection and fully functional escape routes and emergency exits were top of the list when planning the doors and barriers. T90 fire and smoke protection doorsets were used for highly frequented areas with a higher risk of fire and the gallery and escape routes between the individual fire compartments were fitted with single and double-leaf T30 doorsets with round glazing. Access points to the individual levels were equipped with T30 sliding doors and T30 sectional doors.

This Grade II listed building in Thames Ditton dates from 1792. The former manor house, priory and chapel was repurposed as a care home in 1905 by the Nuns of Compassion, yet in recent years the historic buildings have posed challenges to delivering modern standards of care. Oliver & Robb Architects have rationalised the design in a renovation project to created 78 luxury bed spaces. We were appointed to design, supply and install a total of 263 timber tilt and slide sash windows, tilt and turn windows, single doors and French doors to sympathetically upgrade the property.
