Bespoke CorTen steel planter system for a challenging environment

Bespoke CorTen steel planter system for a challenging environment

Kinley

Handyside is a compact, contemporary space that comprises a children’s play area for families to enjoy. The pathways were created with curved plant and tree beds, defined with Perimeta HiGrade Bespoke organic shaped raised planters in CorTen steel. The landscape also called for a steel planter system that could accommodate varying heights. The Kinley team worked closely with Townshend Landscape Architects right from the concept stages of the ambitious design to engineer a planter system that created and enhanced the vision.

Inverted Roof System for Winnersh Triangle Office Blocks (Carbon Neutral)

IKO PLC

This project was a new build, the main contractor specified the need to house a roof/plant room area at the top of a new office block. Originally, it was thought that a Single-Ply, warm roof installation would be the best solution. However, when consulting with IKO about the main requirements for the roofing solution, both pre and during installation, IKO Permaphalt was the obvious choice due to the speed of installation and the robust nature of the materials that would be used and in an inverted roofing situation, potentially last the lifetime of the building.

St Peters Street landscapingStreet furniture | landscape seatingUnity RangeLocation: IpswichSt Peters street in Ipswich has recently been landscaped as part of the latest phase of the ‘Greener Ipswich Project.’ This renovation has aided the kickstart of green spaces across the town as well as helping to create a lively atmosphere for the public.A range of concrete seating and planters were installed here beside the bronze statue of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, which is situated in Ipswich town centre, Suffolk. The Townscape Unity range is designed to enhance and transform any urban space while maintaining functionality. The seating and planters are robust yet easy to move if or when necessary. The products used here were the Unity 1250 seat with deck top and the Unity 1250 planter in a Yorkstone buff finish. The landscaping upgrade was prepared as part of the Towns preparation for The Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The main theme is based on the idea of Tudor plants, particularly those with medicinal properties. Tudor gardens were designed to provide food, medicine, and a place to relax and enjoy the outdoors. The herbs that have been planted near the Wolsey statue are some of the medieval healing herbs thought to have beneficial properties for the lungs, heart, digestion, and headache.

Vestre

In 2016 award-winning landscape designers, The Edible Bus Stop, were commissioned by the Brixton BID to deliver a legacy installation for the Brixton Design Trail as part of the London Design Festival.Their brief was to create a parklet at the entrance to this famously foreboding building. The space had been habitually populated by street drinkers and labelled an anti-social environment by the residents and neighbouring businesses. The brief was to challenge the notion that the addition of seating and creating a space to dwell would increase anti-social behaviour and, on the contrary, that good design could improve perceptions of safety and empower a sense of wellbeing in a community.During the summer, planting beds were refurbished and many edibles and herbs, including fruit trees, were planted. Several Vestre Stripes elements were installed to punctuate the space with communal seating. The parklet was an instant success and quickly populated by residents of all ages, passers-by and visitors to local businesses. As a result, the ‘test-bed’ has now become a permanent legacy; an exemplar of how local stakeholder commissioning and intelligent socially minded design can be an agent of social change to create spaces of genuine community value.Client: Brixton BIDLandscape Design: The Edible Bus StopAddress: Southwyck HouseColdharbour LaneBrixtonLondonSW9 8TX

EverEdge Titan Install at RHS Garden Wisley

EverEdge

EverEdge Titan used to path the new perennial paradise at RHS Garden WisleyRHS Garden Wisley’s iconic Glasshouse Borders are being sympathetically redesigned into a perennial paradise by the internationally acclaimed landscape designer Piet Oudolf, who designed the original borders more than 20 years ago. The redesigned garden newly named “The Oudolf Landscape” will be defined by Piet’s signature ‘New Perennial’ style and will be one of the largest and most significant examples of Piet’s work seen in the UK. The Oudolf Landscape aims to transform the borders into a more contemporary and sustainable landscape and will boast a significantly more complex planting scheme with a key focus on resilience to climate change and benefits to wildlife. The large irrigated turfed path will be replaced with curved paths that will lead visitors among bold drifts of naturally self-supporting herbaceous perennials and grasses, while retaining much-loved views of Wisley’s Glasshouse. Blakedown Landscapes was selected as the principal contractor and has been working collaboratively with the RHS Garden Wisley team to bring Piet’s design to life. The team at Blakedown took great care in grading and preparing the new beds ready for planting, as well as installing new self-binding gravel footpaths. They used our EverEdge Titan steel landscape edging to create the curved paths through the landscape.Available in a variety of depths, thicknesses and finishes, Titan is the go-to product for where a strong and flexible edge is required in all areas of landscaping from traditional parterre’s, long sinuous pathways, driveways and more. Titan has proved to be the perfect choice for RHS Garden Wisley where the steel can be quickly and easily manipulated to create the long meandering paths, whilst the inconspicuous appearance of the steel edge once installed will blend seamlessly into the landscape. The end result will be a steel edge that is easy to maintain and not distracting to the eye allowing for the new perennial planting to be the undivided focus.  Work on the remodelling started in the Autumn of 2023 with the plan of reopening to the public in Summer 2024. For more information about RHS Garden Wisley and the new Oudolf Landscape, please visit www.rhs.org.uk/gardens/wisley.

To maximise the value of the tree planting, the pits were used as storm water attenuation and treatment pits, taking water from the carriageway, passing it through a stone layer on the top of the tree pit and then filtering it down through the Arborsoil Hydro soil mix provided for the root growth. The water then transferred through a clean stone layer to an underdrain to a storm water drain. This method of conveyance gives an acceptable level of pollutant removal and slows the water down so that the existing drainage network can cope with the increasingly violent storm events.

The Temperate House, Kew Gardens, London - Cast Iron Ventilation Floor Grilles

Britannia Metalwork Services Ltd

Originally opened in 1863 and voted 'Best UK National Treasure' at National Geographic Traveller Magazine Reader Awards, the Grade 1 listed, iconic British landmark, The Temperate House at Kew, reopened in 2018 after a major five-year, £41 million restoration. Comprising five pavilions and showcasing over 10,000 new plants from all over the globe, this glass cathedral is the world’s largest Victorian glasshouse, protecting the often rare and tender plants throughout the UK’s cold winters. Commissioned in 2017 by renowned architects Donald Insall Associates - heritage and historic building specialists - and working with ISG, the global construction and engineering company, Britannia designed and manufactured 146 bespoke cast iron floor grilles - a total of 73 linear meters - to house part of the vast new sunken trench heating system. The original inadequate and inefficient heating, ventilation, and irrigation systems were no longer in adequate condition or sufficient for the purpose, and a new biomass underfloor heating system was added to produce ambient temperatures for the plants without impacting the integrity of the building. The finished bare metal design CGA03, meticulously created by our highly experienced pattern makers, echoes the original traditional Victorian grilles found elsewhere within the glasshouse complex and has since become Britannia’s signature grille. We are exceptionally proud to have been chosen and trusted to complete this award-winning project and are equally proud of our teams to produce it – from design, to manufacture, to installation.Frequently referred to as Cathedral, Ecclesiastical, or Victorian decorative floor grilles and as seen here, often placed over channels holding heating pipes, they provide a practical and decorative heating vent. Originally designed for churches they are increasingly popular in private houses, greenhouses, and commercial building developments. Our grilles can be ordered in cast iron or cast aluminium and finished in a wide variety of options. We also work in association with Gunning Heating, making decorative cast iron grilles that fit seamlessly into their underfloor trench heater units.  See our website for a full list of our grille designs and finishes or contact us to discuss your bespoke requirements.
