Recognising the urgent requirement for the Co-op Group Food stores to continue to operate safely during the COVID-19 pandemic, dormakaba worked closely with the Group to create the Safe Entry Flow system. The solution can effectively control the flow of people in and out of premises to ensure social distancing guidelines can be maintained, and in store staff can be protected. Acting as an automatic door operator to control the flow of people into a store, Safe Entry Flow is a people counting system that uses 3D and Thermal Imagining to capture footfall data within a store. The counting system links to an automatic door operator, only allowing entry when the number of customers in the store is within a pre-set range (depending on the size of the retail unit), therefore creating a physical barrier to prevent overcrowding. The enhanced solution also provided Co-op with a wealth of data metrics of footfall within their stores, including turn-in rates.A traffic light system and sound box are also linked to the system to provide visible and audible signals to customers at the store entrance, providing a simple and enhanced end-user experience. This innovative solution enabled Co-op Food stores to comply with social distancing requirements, as outlined in the Government’s operating guidelines. The hardworking and dedicated team at dormakaba went from concept to rollout in just 44 days, to allow Co-op Food to operate as efficiently as possible within the COVID-19 climate. Ricky Walker, UK Delivery Director at dormakaba says, “the Co-op Group was looking for solutions for the Food stores to operate as conventionally as possible in unconventional times. Other measures had been trialled to ensure operations continued, however they did not find these as effective in maintaining Government guidelines. “The Group specifically required something to integrate with the automatic doors, that would create a physical barrier to controlling footfall, ensuring customers and staff are kept safe.” “Recognising this, our dedicated project team have developed a solution that forms a physical barrier for people, to ensure guidelines on limiting footfall are met. Safe Entry flow is supported with a designated Technical Support Program to provide assistance from installation through to aftersales maintenance. We’ve had extremely positive feedback from the Co-op Group, with installations still ongoing.”

Stannah supplied and installed a traction-drive, 33-person, 2500kg-capacity passenger lift to deliver safe and comfortable movement of people of all mobility levels, including patients in beds or multiple wheelchair users, between the two floors of facilities

The venue can hold up to 1600 people, with much of the capacity arranged in levels of banked arena-style seating with stepped access.

The Matt Hampson Foundation was set up in December 2010 by Matt Hampson himself, this was set up to help people who have been injured in sport. Matt Hampson (Hambo) himself was injured whilst training for the U21s Rugby. Hambo sustained several injuries and it paralysed him from the neck down and now wears a breathing tube.

This community engagement project for YMCA in Milton Keynes featured Wallbarn M-Tray on a roof space which acted as a leisure and social area for the students and residents of the YMCA campus in Milton Keynes. It also featured in the training and development of young people with learning difficulties and with challenging upbringings to learn about construction and green roofing, being able to gain NVQ qualification and further certification for installing green roofs.The green roof will be moved in its entirety to a new premises in early 2022 where the benefits of the M-Tray system are fully demonstrated. Rather than have to dig up tonnes of loose aggregate, established sedum and wildflower planting and sheet drainage materials; each module can be simply lifted up and transported via pallets to the its new home the other side of Milton Keynes at the new YMCA building. As this new premises will house many of the young people using YMCA services, this new green roof becomes their green roof to enjoy.

Cyclehoop are set to introduce a major network of on-street cycle storage to neighbourhoods across Glasgow following a successful Bikehangar pilot scheme.With around 70% Glasgow’s homes in flat or tenements, finding safe spaces for cyclists to park their bike can be a real challenge when communal property rules often prevent storage on stairwells. Even then, having to carry bikes up and down flights of stairs can act as a deterrent to people cycling regularly.But the introduction of 130 Bikehangars on streets throughout Glasgow will support the growth of cycling in the city and make cycling a more attractive travel option that residents rely upon routinely.Councillor Anna Richardson, City Convener for Sustainability and Carbon Reduction, backed the scheme as a way to build greater reliance on more sustainable forms of transport as part of the effort to tackle the climate emergency.Councillor Anna Richardson said: “With so many of us in Glasgow living in tenements or flats, bike storage is a real issue for people who cycle or who are keen to take up cycling. Keeping bikes in stairwells can cause obstructions, which creates a safety risk and can put owners at odds with other residents. Bikes kept on stairwells are also at a greater risk of theft. But having access to secure storage that’s easy to use will take away a significant barrier that deters people from relying on a bike. Our new scheme with Cyclehoop will make using a bike more attractive and ensure how we get about Glasgow is more active and sustainable. Encouraging greater reliance on the bike as an ordinary mode of transport is a vital part of our efforts to decarbonise the city’s transport system.”

Tool & Gauge Kitchen is a café and shared kitchen facility located within the new Frome Business Park in Somerset. The team at Interaction has designed a contemporary social space where people can eat, drink and connect, with a modern monochrome design that respects the building’s industrial history. It was important that the flooring offered a practical surface with plenty of character and a sense of intrigue.

To help open up Swansea’s River Tawe corridor for further development, Swansea City Council is developing Morfa Distributor Road, a major transport link benefiting both the local community and the economic welfare of the area. With the Council’s ambition to turn the area into a reinvigorated residential and commercial space, ensuring people are safe from entering traffic was high on this project’s priorities.

The Maxwell Centre at the University of Cambridge is a centrepiece building created to pioneer revolutionary “blue skies” research and industrial partnership in the physical sciences. During the design and specification stage of the Metroline washroom installation contract, Lan Services considered the fact that the products chosen would have to be installed within washrooms of varying sizes and layouts. Also, due to a large volume of people using the facilities each day, the specification called for a highly durable and reliable washroom solution that is hygienic, easy to clean and maintain.

The Glasgow Science Centre’s vision is to empower people through learning and engaging with science. With over 350K unique visitors every year, the centre needed to replace the existing flooring throughout the facility. During a recent refurbishment international flooring specialist Gerflor would supply a mixture of their hardwearing GTI Max, Attraction® and Taralay Premium flooring that would total 1800m2.

With a housing stock that dates from the 1900s to present day, Vale of Aylesbury Housing Trust provides affordable housing for more than 17,000 people living and working in Aylesbury and the surrounding villages of the Vale. Travel to London Luton Airport (LLA) is being made easier, faster and greener with the development of the DART people mover.And the final journey between shuttle stop and airport terminal is via a covered walkway designed, manufactured and installed by Broxap.The walkway complements a series of canopies we created for the airport in 2019 as part of a bus and coach station upgrade.Together the DART (Direct-Air-Rail-Transit) system and bus services are designed to encourage more people to leave their cars behind when flying from LLA as well as offer sustainable travel options to employees.The 150-metre bespoke walkway guiding passengers to the terminal from the DART station is based on Broxap’s flagship ‘Newcastle’ design.The freestanding walkway features clear multi-wall polycarbonate cladding and is an essential element in the passenger journey, forming the final connection between ground transportation and the boarding of aircraft.A bespoke Hartcliffe Cantilever Shelter has also been made for the DART building to form a covered entrance area.Testing of the shuttle system is now underway with an announcement on its opening due in early 2023.

Dudhope Young People’s Inpatient Unit is a new £8 million development, part of the North of Scotland Regional Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service and is due to be handed over to the client on 6th March 2015. The facility is to be based on the site of the existing YPU at Dudhope Terrace, Dundee and will include a 12-bed inpatient unit with an education facility and family accommodation for patients from across the North of Scotland.

St Richard’s Hospital provides a full range of acute services for the people in Chichester and the surrounding area, including an Accident & Emergency department. A new entrance to A&E was being created and as with all healthcare projects, the aim was to help the hospital maintain clean, safe and effective treatment spaces, which is especially challenging in an extremely high traffic environment in 24 hour use such as the Accident & Emergency department.

Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH) operates services in 200 locations across Rotherham, Doncaster and North Lincolnshire. It provides an inpatient and community mental health, learning disability and addiction services for adult, young people and children. The trust required a solution to help prevent the possibility of suicide from door tops while not compromising the integrity of the door in terms of fire, safety, privacy and functionality.

London’s largest UNESCO World Heritage site, Kew Gardens welcomes over 2.1 million visitors a year. Gripsure decking is helping more people enjoy the botanical attraction’s natural area, which is home to 15,000 species of wildlife.Gripsure non-slip decking now tops a new 300-metre walkway, which takes visitors across a conservation area to a treehouse. The two-metre wide platform is raised to avoid impacting on wildlife.The platform was created by Artisan Fern. With a number of slopes, it needed to be as safe as possible and accessible to people with disabilities. It was also important to use sustainable materials that fitted with the natural environment.Gary Walker of Artisan Fern said: “When we were building the walkway we needed to ensure it complied with DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) legislation so non-slip decking was a great choice. When we were choosing decking we needed it to be sustainable and durable, as well as looking good. Gripsure non-slip decking is a sustainably sourced product that works really well for all Kew’s visitors. It looks fantastic and we are really impressed with it.”
