The striking aggregate finish to the paving perfectly compliments the modern exterior of the building. For the area around the new bowling green. Situated in The Junction Retail development in Antrim, and with a massive £10m invested, the 110,000ft2 store is the largest in Dobbies UK portfolio. To complement the modern aesthetics of the retail store, Dobbies sought hard landscaping to amplify the fresh contemporary feel. The store is expected to attract a footfall of around one million visitors per year. With that in mind, ensuring high quality, durable paving was used throughout the project was imperative. In addition to aesthetic and performance desires for the project and with sustainability in mind, Dobbies decided they wanted to source products locally to reduce their carbon footprint. The SolutionTobermore’s Sienna block paving in silver created a sleek, contemporary look. With a wide array of products all locally sourced, Tobermore was the chosen manufacturer to supply Dobbies with a hard landscaping solution which surpassed both aesthetic and performance expectations. Light Reflective Values for Brett's Alpha provide the solution at Litchfield dementia care facility.

Brett Landscaping

According to Alzheimer’s UK, there are around 900,000 people with dementia in the UK and this figure is expected to rise to 1.6 million by 2040. Dementia is an umbrella term and is caused when diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, vascular dementia and other conditions, damage the brain. As well as memory problems, dementia can also cause issues with vision and perception, leading to problems such as a welcome mat by a door looking like a black hole. The Equality Act and Building Regulations (Part M) make provision for people with dementia and there are some, when specifying paving for care homes and in the public realm, that can make a significant difference. One of the key points that can be addressed by speaking to a reputable paving manufacturer is the consistency of light reflection values (RV) throughout the landscape design. LRV measures the amount of light reflected back from a material when illuminated by a light source. The more light reflected, the higher the LRV. It is usually measured using aspectrophotometer. Research by Liverpool John Moores University demonstrated that an ‘uneven’ appearance of ground surface or patches of darker tone or colour can be confusing and potentially cause accidents. The institution also described how paving patterns or changes in colour that are arbitrary can cause confusion. It has concluded that strong paving patterns - such as chequerboard - may cause disturbance, as consistent light reflectance values are required. When Keepmoat Homes was involved in the building of the planned dementia care facilities in Litchfield, Staffordshire, the company spoke to specialists at Brett Landscaping. Keepmoat was working on a centre that would house up to 90 people in six buildings and needed the paving to be suitable for the residents at the centre. It required external paving which registered between 25 and 45 on the light reflective value spectrum. Rigorous and extensive testing of the LRVs of Brett’s products enabled Keepmoat to install paving that falls within the strict parameters of the guidelines. Testing of Brett’s Alpha Flow permeable paving systems at Brett’s manufacturing plants in Kent and Dorset, showed that the LRV was consistent on individual colour ranges. It also revealed that the variance between all three colour ranges (Autumn Gold, Brindle and Charcoal) is ideally suited for the project. Brett’s Alpha Flow paving is already widely used across the country for developments where developers are looking to improve surface water drainage and prevent flooding. Existing Alpha Flow pavements are also still offering between 15 and 20 years of low maintenance service. Other than the consistency of light reflective values, Alzheimer’s UK has called for other work to help those living with dementia. It also recommends carefully selecting materials to avoid reflective or dark surfaces which could confuse perception, planning continuous, level routes and avoiding steps if possible.

The ChallengeAttractive permeable paving was required for two luxurious rural properties  Kite and Kestrel have been designed to create an agricultural character with a modern appearance. The two luxury homes located a short walk from West Wittering beach, have been carefully designed to remain connected with the locality.  The properties required a complementary paving solution that was functional yet aesthetically pleasing. Paving was required for the two driveways alongside the shared access courtyard. The developer wanted the areas to be clearly differentiated to give each property its own space.  Laying patterns were a useful way to subtly break up the area and give individuality to the properties. Whilst kerbing was required functionally, continuity with the overall modern design needed to be considered.  The developer encountered some difficulties when obtaining planning permission due to the properties high profile and sensitive location. The council’s strong desire to protect the environment of the rural location contributed to the request for a permeable paving solution. The Solution Tobermore’s Hydropave permeable paving was the perfect SuDS solution.   Tobermore provided hard landscape products for the courtyard and driveways to achieve the ‘modern, yet rural’ design brief. Manufactured to create a rustic, aged appearance, Tobermore’s Hydropave Tegula permeable paving brings elegance and charm to the luxury homes. With its ability to function as a SuDS system, choosing to use Hydropave increased the chances for planning permission approval, whilst aligning with the environmental factors considered when designing the properties.  Junnell Homes wanted to subtly separate the driveway area from the courtyard, while maintaining the aesthetic appeal. Hydropave Tegula was chosen for both locations, but with different laying patterns and unit sizes.  A herringbone laying pattern was used for the courtyard, offering an aesthetic appeal and increased trafficability. To ensure continuity of the style, the driveways were also laid with permeable block paving but using duo sizes in a stretcher bond laying pattern, helping to break up the space.  Fusion Kerb offered Junnell Homes a cost-effective, premium kerb with the striking aesthetics of a granite kerb.

The Challenge Modern paving was required for a contemporary farmer market and restaurant  Crimple Garden Centre in Harrogate has increased its retail offering to include a food hall, restaurant, gift shop and art gallery. The vision for the new building was to provide an open plan artisan style farmer market and restaurant that comfortably coexists with the existing garden centre.  The modern building form was driven by its highly sustainable design with natural ventilation, northlights and its saw-tooth style roof adding originality to the scheme. A key point when designing the area was the importance of creating an identity which relates to the adjacent garden centre but gives distinction to the new offering.  A visually appealing external area was important to attract customers into the farmers market and garden centre. Modern paving that could withstand significant footfall was required to complement the contemporary aesthetic of the new market.  The Solution Artro linear paving harmonises the styling, lines and tones of the new building  Tobermore worked closely with the project team to ensure design aspirations were met. Crimple required a unique external area to align with the quirky finish of the new artisan style farmer market and restaurant. Tobermore’s Artro linear block paving was the perfect hard landscaping solution for the main entrance area.  Artro’s strength lies in its ability to adapt its look depending on the colour and laying pattern used. A unique look was created using a mix of two cool grey tones. A high percentage of the lighter Platinum was combined with a low percentage of the darker Carbon. Artro’s stretcher bond orientation naturally guides customers inside the Crimple building. The linear paving blocks offer a modern, hard-wearing surface that will withstand significant footfall and vehicle trafficking, if required. With accessibility in mind, Artro provides confidence with a low slip/skid surface in all-weather conditions. The smooth surface finish is suitable for prams and wheelchair users.  A featured walkway from the front row parking bays to the main entrance was created using Tobermore’s Mayfair Flags. The silver slabs feature sparkling natural granite aggregates that add to the scheme’s contemporary aesthetic. As sustainability was a key consideration of the project, Tobermore’s permeable paving option Hydropave Tegula Duo was chosen with its ability to function as a SuDS paving system. Laid in the warm shade Bracken, the contrast between the paving products helped to zone the pedestrian areas.   Tobermore’s granite aggregate Fusion Edge added the finishing touch to the project with its modern aesthetic.

Thames City is a spectacular location and presence in Zone One of the River Thames. With some of the city’s most breathtaking views, especially for those not afraid of heights, this is a fresh district featuring three residential towers, a development of 12 buildings, beautiful apartments with private luxury amenities, high-end retail, and fine dining venues. The overall experience of this amazing project is made even more appealing thanks to its network of interconnecting parks, cosy green courtyards, and romantic city squares. This project was complex, involving both TerraSmart Rail Paving and TerraSmart Pedestal Paving Systems. Both these systems are designed for waterproofed substrates with TerraSmart Rail being the ultimate raised paving system, unbelievably solid thanks to its unique lattice framework.Due to the height of the tower, we worked closely with Midgard Design Services to develop and install an appropriate wind uplift mitigation solution to keep the project within budget. The TerraSmart Rail Paving System was weighted using ballast weights, and installed in the joist frame to mitigate uplift – it couldn’t be fixed into the structural slab due to it being an inverted roof. The pavers were then mechanically fixed to the joists using a wind uplift visual fixing, which clamps down the entire system. The TerraSmart Pedestal Paving System was mechanically fixed to the structural slab as there was no waterproofing membrane to penetrate underneath. The wind uplift mechanical fixing was screwed into the top of the pedestals to retain the concrete pavers and prevent any movement in strong winds. The installation of the systems was beautifully done by ANC Construction and the proof is in the photos you see on our website.

Challenge Hard-wearing, aesthetically pleasing paving options were required to bring life back to well known tourist destination Portrush Recreation Grounds is a key destination for visitors to Northern Ireland’s beautiful North Coast. The location is such a well-known spot, providing visitors and the local community with sports, recreation and leisure facilities for the last 100 years.Unfortunately, due to wear and tear over the years the location had become rundown and underused. Due to the condition of the site, many areas had been closed off to the public.Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council with the support of Department for Communities and the UK Government Levelling Up Fund, have approved a refurbishment. The renovation hopes to improve the appearance of the Recreational Grounds. For the area surrounding the bowling green, suitable paving was required. The Challenge Modern paving was required for the entrance plaza of a shopping destination High Street Mall has been transformed into Portadown’s leading retail and parking hub. The £6m regeneration project required a new shopping centre layout, enhanced parking, greater town centre access and a new pedestrianised central plaza with modern landscaping. Over 2000m2 of modern paving material was required for the entrance to the retail hub. Due to the expansive nature of the area, laying patterns would need to be used to ‘zone’ and break up areas into smaller pockets of space. The plaza needed to be designed in a way that people could use it as a place to gather and socialise. The client wanted the retail project to have a public realm feel to it that the community could enjoy. The Solution Tobermore’s Fusion block paving created a plaza with a striking, modern look.  Fusion block paving in Silver, Mid Grey, Sandstone and Noir was chosen for the 2000m2 plaza which created a striking, modern look. The entrance to the new 25,000ft2 Lidl store features a new pedestrianised square complete with seating and planters. Anchor tenants, Lidl, opted for 600m2 of Fusion paving to be laid outside their premises in keeping with the rest of the retail park. The client fully embraced the complimentary hard landscape proposal which was provided by Tobermore. Unique laying patterns were used to ‘zone’ and break up space in the expansively paved area. The paving design provided by Tobermore featured ‘pockets of space’ where coffee docks and pop-up markets could be situated. Fusion in Sandstone and a small proportion of Mid Grey was used to zone ‘public’ areas like the courtyard. The walkways feature Fusion in Silver and Mid Grey with a low percentage of Sandstone in the blend. These design choices were made to distinguish each area while still giving subtle reference to each other. Bands of Fusion in Noir were used as buffer strips to create a clear distinction of where people can walk into and out of the Lidl store.  The retail project certainly has a public realm feel to it as it is fully pedestrianised. The plaza was designed in a way that the local community could use it as a place to gather and socialise. There are seated areas with soft landscaping that creates a calming atmosphere for people to relax.

AG were tasked with installing paving flags at the new entrance of the Portlaoise Retail Park as well as lifting and replacing the old paving at the existing entrance. The TerraPave® flag, manufactured from aggregates sourced from around Europe, was chosen as a fine quality concrete alternative to natural stone, which helps keep costs down. It was also selected for conforming to current BREEAM sustainability criteria which AG include as standard requirement. TerraPave® also requires little to no maintenance and is completed in ground and textured finishes, giving it a more attractive look compared to other paving solutions.John Donnellan, Key Account Manager AG, said:“We felt the TerraPave® flags were the best products for these highly pedestrianised entrances due to its glowing track record and the similar projects it’s been used for. TerraPave® is easily maintained and retains its colour very well and these were the qualities Harcourt Developments required due to the heavy footfall at the Retail Park. After 6 years the flags now look in pristine condition.”The old paving was replaced with our TerraPave® Genoa Ground flag for its unique design and eye-catching finish.

Tower 12 takes its name from both the number of floors it spans and the fact it was the twelfth building in Spinningfields, Manchester.Due to the area being dominated by commercial developments, often inhabited by financial industry tenants, the Spinningfields area has been dubbed the “Canary Wharf of the North”. Located in the heart of this bustling district, Tower 12’s design offers a unique, holistic, and modern work environment. This vibrant area, furnishing both residents and office workers with entertainment, bars, and restaurants, also features and celebrates the local heritage with the Peoples History Museum located just across the river. This is mirrored with Tower 12 whose façade emanates the industrial heritage of the area but whose function retains modern refinement.Flexible Business Interiors created the terrace spaces on Tower 12 using the pedestal paving system, which is comprised of our specifically designed paving pedestals and porcelain tiles. The overall project design is enhanced by the seamless transitioning from indoor to outdoor spaces: achieved using Ryno’s simply adjusted RP-FR non-combustible paving pedestals. The porcelain tiles, in the shade Argento from the Quadro range, punctuated the space with their elegant, contemporary finish.
