The bulk of the project, spread over seven large blocks, used DucoWall Basic to provide plant screening. One element, where higher level glazing needs privacy screening from the walkways below, DucoWall Classic W 50Z is installed inverted so that the areas gain maximum light without sacrificing privacy. Another challenge was to incorporate louvre doors into the plant screening areas without interrupting the aesthetic appearance. Here again a standard DucoDoor solution provided exactly what was required. The DucoDoor can use the full range of DucoWall blades to provide a beautiful and uniform result.

The Louvre is the most visited museum in the world. Opened in 1989, the entrance area below the pyramid was originally designed to accommodate 4.5 million visitors per year. Just 25 years later, the number of visitors exceeded the 10 million mark. As a result, the museum decided to do major renovations that would have the lowest possible impact on the building architecture. Visitor numbers mean extraordinary requirements for the sanitary facilities. The Louvre chose TOTO for sanitary facilities located in the Hall Napoléon. Toilets, urinals, washbasins and hand dryers for the men's and women's washrooms.

INNOVATIVE HIGH SECURITY PRIVACY LOUVRE SYSTEM

When a significant UK security site needed a complete upgrade to its perimeter fencing, Zaun stepped in with a cost-effective and highly secure solution.The task aheadDue to the compassionate nature of the site, guarding against the physical threat and providing a visual screen was important. Therefore, the perimeter had to meet the high standards of the Centre for Protection of National Infrastructure [CPNI] and be capable of housing Perimeter Intrusion Detection Systems [PIDS] – a sensor mounted on the fence.As there was no current security fencing system that includes a visual block approved by CPNI, it was thought that two fences were required. One of these fences would provide high-security protection and the other a screen from prying eyes.Installing an additional conventional louvre screen would have been expensive and taken up too much room, so Zaun’s development team came up with a solution to address both of these issues.The Patent Pending system uses horizontal louvres that cleverly link into the mesh; this keeps cost and size down as the mesh itself becomes part of the louvre system. The furthermore, them grabs the wires as it is installed to ensure a tight fit, thus preventing rattles that might interfere with the acoustic PIDS system. This clever design saves costs and space. In addition, the product can be configured to provide varying degrees of screening.What Was SuppliedCPNI approved HiSec Super 6 high-security fencing system is designed for sensitive, high-profile sites. The vertical wires are 6mm in diameter with 76.2mm x 12.7mm spacings, enhancing a standard 358 system.Louvre privacy screens are easily attached to the robust fencing eliminating the need for two sets of fencing. Manufactured from 2mm thick steel sheets, which are folded to form the louvre. The galvanised sheets cleverly grab onto the mesh as they are installed, improving privacy and making the 358 mesh more rigid.This whole private and secure fencing system can also have PIDS easily attached. These mounted detection systems give early warning to any attempts of intrusion, whether penetration or climbing. It offers discreet monitoring and early warning and can be fitted on existing fencing units.

The Italia-Corten, which has a high recycled content, 100% recyclability, requires no finishing treatments and is maintenance free, fulfilled the brief for a material with a low environmental impact and a strong aesthetic.

CS were approached by the Met Office HQ in Exeter to provide them with a range of standard ventilation units to be displayed at the front of the main building and IT building. After liaising with the glazing contractor to find the right model that fitted with the building’s sloped design, the RSH5700 Performance Louvre and an acoustic louvre was supplied. These products provided the building with a glazed-in, natural ventilation system. The A3105, a constant blade louvre with concealed mullions, were provided for the IT building. This product offers an excellent airflow performance.

North Kent Police HQ is a four-storey landmark building of 11,500 m2. In addition to the perimeter fencing, Lang+Fulton supplied the steel louvred cladding panels and support steelwork for the generator housing. The panels were made from Italia-100 which is an extremely robust louvred material, providing 100% visual screening and a high level of security. Italia-100 was considered to perfectly complement the overall architectural design as well as providing the required functionality at a sensitive site.

Terra-34 balustrade infill panels, open mesh flooring, stair treads and louvred screening have been supplied for escape stairs at Milton Park. Three new buildings have been tailored to provide high-tech laboratories and offices. There were five stairs towers in total, 10.7m and 15m high, also designed to provide access to service facilities. The Italia-80 louvres effectively screen all the service ducting and were supplied with demountable panels with D-handles for inspection points at each landing and ground level. The result was a smart solution in keeping with the high specification of the development.

78/92 Great Portland Street consists of a group of mixed period buildings which is under redevelopment by Great Portland Estates to provide 23,000 sq ft of residential flats, 11,000 sq ft of retail units and 18,000 sq ft of offices at a cost of £19million. Lang+Fulton installed 45.3 linear metres of louvred panels 1100mm high with 3 access doors, galvanized and ppc RAL7038. The louvred panels were inverted to provide maximum visual screening from ground level.

A 2.5m high screen of Italia-100 panels was installed to provide 100% visual screening. The louvres have a free area of 29%, which helps to reduce wind loading, but, in order to cope with potential storm force conditions, the RHS posts were specially designed in accordance with BS EN 1991-1-4.

Newton House is a brand new Housing 21 Extra Care Living development in Penrith. It promotes independent living for people over the age of 55, with access to on-site care. The development offers 54 one and two bedroom apartments.Newton House provides fully accessible facilities for residents and visitors. These include a restaurant, hair salon, residents’ lounge, activity room and communal gardens.For the natural smoke ventilation system at Newton House, Dyer provided roof vents, dampers and louvres, and supplied and installed the controls in order to ventilate the communal areas.Three staircases are ventilated by certified smoke vent rooflights, each fitted with a KA 54 chain drive. Each of the three internal corridors are ventilated via smoke shafts with smoke dampers and grilles (with concealed drives) at each corridor level and a rooflight at the head of the shaft.Dual colour aluminium double glazed louvres each fitted with a single LDF louvre drive, ventilate the six corridors.All staircase roof vents and louvres are CE marked and tested to EN 12101-2. The shaft dampers are CE marked and tested to EN 12101-8.Dyer supplied and installed a multizone smoke ventilation control panel with 72 hour battery back up, with one breakglass reset switch for each zone. The control panel will receive signals from the fire alarm to individually trigger each zone. When a corridor zone is triggered, the vent at the head of the adjacent staircase will open. If a smoke shaft inlet vent is triggered, all remaining vents will be locked in the closed position to prevent spread of heat and smoke between floors.The end of corridor louvres can be used for natural day-to-day ventilation when required. Each has a switch located nearby, when pressed, will open the louvres to 25%, allowing fresh air to enter the corridors.

The overriding narrative here is the link between the inside and outside, with a strong focus on plants and nature. Based on experience with other offices, we know that the best option is to fit the louvre blades horizontally on a south façade because the sun is high. The DucoSun Wing is perforated and thus assures perfect harmony between solar shading and shadow. The fin-shaped louvre blade has an urban design and can rotate with the sun which means the light entering can be controlled.

The use of a diffused polycarbonate solution also minimises glare on sunny days. A vertical frame was designed to incorporate ventilation.The rectangular aluminium structure sits beneath the rooflight - accomodating 23 EN 12101 certified centre pivot louvres for both smoke and comfort ventilation.

Dyer Environmental Controls Ltd supplied and installed a mechanical smoke ventilation solution in a Watkin Jones Homes development. The Wharf, set alongside Droylsden Marina offers a collection of modern 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments.The apartment block has 6 levels connected by a central staircase.EN certified dampers are fitted to each floor along with local smoke detection.The fans are placed within the smoke shaft with an opensky louvre situated above them, providing weather protection. A control panel operates the duty and standby fans.Two AOV smoke dome vents are in place to provide smoke clearance, one located on level 6 and the other on the central staircase.If smoke is detected in the building the system will open the corridor AOV, smoke shaft damper, head of stair vent and opensky louvre. The duty fan will run to extract any smoke located in the corridor. In the event of a power failure the standby fan will engage.Dyer’s fully automatic system allows safe escape for residents and clear access for firefighters.

There was a requirement to cut down directly incident sunlight, the idea came up to work with DucoSun Wing in front of the façade. These large, wing-shaped louvre blades were made of a black perforated sheet that was made in special non-standard sizes for this project. This system therefore works as solar shading on the one hand as well as fulfilling an architectural function on the other, which is a defining factor in the architectural appearance of the office building.

Edd Rushton, the architect in charge of the project said, “Painted Accoya profiles provided a durable and cost-effective way of bringing new life to a tired 1970’s façade and creating a vibrant new public face for the school. Russwood supplied pre-coated Accoya cladding panels, as well as thicker profiles used in the louvred sun-screen, and offered specification and detailing advice throughout the project.”

The new Lycee Lucie Aubrac high school in Paris is an environmental friendly building with a Net ZeroEnergy objective, to reach a neutral balance between energy consumption and production. The premises are organized around a long inner street, covered by a monumental glass rooflight. The smoke ventilation and natural ventilation system provided and serviced by Kingspan Light + Air, is designed with 26 units of Kingspan Optima louvred windows integrated into photovoltaic glass rooflight, as well as façade air inlets. The opening smoke vents were connected to STG control panels - MZ2 and Compact.

A stand-alone cycle hub with two tier parking for 120 bicycles now provides high-quality, safe and secure bike storage at Dundee’s new railway station. The vison was for a structure that wasn’t a ‘box shaped’. The solution incorporated a rear section of Lang+Fulton’s Italia-80 louvred panels. The louvers were also introduced at the top and around the sides of the glazing allowing a good air flow.The panels were hot-dip galvanised and polyester powder coated to provide a smart, long-lasting finish in a location with close proximity to the sea.
