The former press and broadcast centre in London’s Olympic Park has been transformed into the one of the biggest European tech hubs, with Marlon Clickfix RL glazing system glazed with Marlon Clickfix 1040 polycarbonate panels. One of the challenges for the architect was finding a thermally- efficient rooflight solution which would work at a low 7° pitch. Marlon Clickfix 1040 has interlocking connections that click into place forming glazed areas of unlimited size and shape. It provides a low pitch rooflight maximising natural light achieving the required performance of highly sustainable buildings, and creates a bright, naturally-lit environment.

A comprehensive rooflight solution was supplied to the new £33 million Oriam, Scotland’s Sports Performance Centre, creating a light airy environment which offers exceptional thermal comfort for athletes. Designed by Reiach and Hall Architects, the centre features a full-size indoor synthetic football pitch, two sports halls and other facilities. This building features a unique curved roof, incorporating a combination of rooflight systems that maximised daylight and limited heat gain. The products chosen were a combination of Ritchlight mono pitched rooflights and Xlok Ultra panel glazing systems, vented and unvented, ensured the differing aesthetic and performance requirements were met.

CDI Innovative Construction Materials Ltd

Providing 21 affordable homes in the first ‘carbon negative’ housing community of its kind in the UK. The initial concept began in 2009 with the aim of creating carbon negative housing. The project is ground breaking with a plan to lock away as much carbon as possible whilst generating excess energy from systems installed. Reppel products used: Lewis Deck light weight steel/ screed composite floor system providing acoustic floors improving Building Regulations Part E standards by at least 8dB. Lacomet FL flashing was also used - as alternative to lead, solving the problem of tannins leaching from timber shingles roofs.

Accessible Storage Solutions By Rackline

Rackine after successfully tendering, designed, manufactured and installed a truly bespoke storage solution. The design incorporated nearly 7000 drawers in six different sizes to house everything from dress fabrics to religious robes, handbags to walking sticks, and embroidery to underwear, hanging garment storage, locations for 1280 large rolled textiles up to 6 metres long and twice as many small rolled objects. The solution required a light weight system to be designed which still needed to have the capability to be almost 4 metres tall, up to 1.6 metres deep and accommodate drawers up to 2 metres wide.

Delivering privacy between the design office and meeting room of leading toy and games specialist, John Adams, Style has installed a chic moveable wall system that combines three glass panels with a single solid panel and solid inset pass door. The DORMA semi-automatic sliding partition allows natural light into the divided space whilst still offering 47dB Rw acoustic rating, for excellent privacy when required. Staff at John Adams can quickly and easily slide the panels into place, whereupon substantial rubber seals automatically expand to form the optimum acoustic barrier, every time.

Carlton House – Bespoke 358 Mesh Security Enclosure

The Bike Storage Company worked with Ardmore Construction to supply, design and install a bespoke 358 Mesh Security Enclosure housing 120 Two Tier Cycle Racks plus a further 80 Two Tier Racks within an internal cycle store. The Bike Storage Company also provided the raised access floor. This high specification mesh enclosure was installed with 358 high security mesh cladding along with PIR lighting and fob access. The cycle enclosure and cycle racks were supplied with The Bike Storage Company’s 10-year manufacturing warranty & a 15-year no rust guarantee as well as BREEAM and Secured by Design compliance.

AstraZeneca – Bespoke Amazon Eco Two Tier Cycle Enclosures

Working on behalf of Overbury to design, supply and install two Bespoke Amazon Eco Two Tier Cycle Enclosures at the AstraZeneca headquarters in Cambridge. The Bike Storage Company produced two secure cycle enclosures with high specification, including cladding in both 358 high security mesh and FSC certified timber as well as electronic locks and LED lighting. Providing over 200 cycle spaces. These enclosures were supplied with The Bike Storage Company’s 10-year manufacturing warranty & a 15-year no rust guarantee. Having visited shortly after completing installation, it is clear the enclosures are popular, and in full use by cyclists.

The new £34 million super school in Wales, BriggsAmasco installed a complete roof system comprising steel deck, high performance PIR insulation, single ply membrane and mono-pitch rooflights that will help to create an energy self-sufficient school. Built by Willmott Dixon for Ceredigion Council, the 11,200m2 facility merges five schools – Ysgol Dyffryn Teifi, Aberbanc, Coedybryn, Llandysul, and Pontsian – to form the county’s second ‘all-through’ school. Set to accommodate 1,000 primary and secondary pupils, it incorporates many sustainable features including photovoltaic panels, and will use natural light and ventilation to minimise energy use and running costs.

The new Waitrose and Great Cornish Food Store in Truro are located in new purpose-built premises leased from the Duchy of Cornwall. The Duchy was heavily involved in façade design of the new store, Dryvit SHAPE Prefabricated Features, manufactured off site, were offered as a light weight, cost-effective solution to reproducing stone Pediments, cornices, pilasters and capitals and other architectural features around the perimeter of the development. Cast concrete Pillars were finished with our speciality finish Stonemist, to deliver subtle tones of colour with special aggregate used to pick up the natural sunlight; reflecting like the glitter of natural stone.

Set up by the Arts Council of Great Britain, the Serpentine Gallery annually commissions internationally renowned architects to design a pavilion on the Gallery lawn. One pavilion was constructed using F H Brundle’s Gratings and Flooring, complementing the design, maintaining its architectural integrity. Gratings combine great strength with light structures and non-slip properties, ideal for use on platforms, galleries, gangways and storage floors etc. Durbar sheets raised pattern feature forms a non-slip surface in any direction with excellent draining characteristics where required. Durbar sheets can be used as a structural component for vehicle flooring, walkways and bridges.

Products: Flexi light, Flexi heavy & Flexi access. Services: Plantroom, Generator, Air-handling units, VRF condensers and bespoke access solutions. Roof build-up: Inverted roof design. The mechanical services contractor on the project, had a number of different heavy building services that required supporting. This included a 6000kg plantroom, 6000kg generator, two 4500kg air-handling units and a 1150kg air-handling unit. Utilising our Flexi-Heavy Duty range of supports, we designed and calculated individual frameworks for each item of plant, paying particular attention to ensuring that the correct load management through our frames.

An assortment of products was required to support various services such as cable trays, ductwork, condensers and air-handling units. In addition, due to one of the air-handling units being extremely wider than usual, we also had to manufacture a bespoke custom framework for this item.

New dormer windows to its front aspect lend this 1980’s property a delightfully modern aesthetic, while a green roof to the rear aspect underlines its eco-credentials. The installation of Glazing Vision’s elegant sliding-over fixed rooflight above the stairwell, together with 4 additional fixed rooflights, has maximised light streaming into this new living space, and also provided an all-important source of ventilation.

Planet Partitioning

The new Willesden Green Cultural Centre opened in the summer of 2015. At the heart of the building, Planet installed a triangular atrium using p20 single glazed demountable partitioning with deflection head detail to provide natural light throughout the building. Offices and meeting rooms on Level 2 feature p100 double-glazed acoustic partitioning with SonoTec double-glazed doors, for high acoustic performance. For the stairways at either end of the building, Planet installed fire-rated glazed screens. For one stairway, Planet installed EI120 and EI60 fire integrity and insulated screens, and EI60 fire integrity and insulation screens for the other.

Polyflor flooring helps create new extension at Llwyncrwn Primary School

Commercial vinyl flooring from Polyflor was installed at Llwyncrwn Primary School in Beddau, Wales to create a brand new junior block at the school building. Cardiff based flooring contractors CS Flooring Solutions fitted around 600 m² of Polyflor vinyl flooring throughout the new school building. Led by main contractors Morgan Sindall, the new extension is a sustainable 7 classroom building. Polyflor’s Forest fx in the Classic Oak design was installed in the school hall and meeting rooms, whilst high design Polysafe Verona PUR safety flooring in the light blue Skyline shade was selected for the classrooms, cloakroom, kitchen, and toilets.

Easy Glass MOD 0747 stand off balustrade - London private home

Q-railing

St. Elmo is a newly built private residence located in Epsom, London. The architects contacted Q-railing to inquire about a glass railing that would allow maximum light into the master bedroom and enable uninterrupted views of the garden. Q-railing recommended a fascia mount balustrade on the balcony using its Easy Glass MOD 0747 stand-off railing system and a 40 x 40 mm cap rail. The internal staircase is equipped with Q-railing’s 42.4 mm stainless handrails and MOD 0148 off-set stainless brackets. Outside, the elegant Easy Glass Pro glass balustrade was installed.

The Birmingham New Street refurbishment completely re-imagined the Pallasades shopping centre situated above the station. SAS designed, supplied and installed several bespoke metal ceilings specified for the lower retail area within the mall: A mall link feature installed below glass reinforced gypsum features in the mall’s access areas.A lozenge shaped, metal can ceiling with integrated lighting, a slatted SAS700 linear ceiling and SAS320 alongside linear grilles. The aim was to create an ideal meeting place which would serve as a gateway to Birmingham. A massive 50 million people are expected through the door each year.

The Atrium Building, Sandyford

SAS International delivered unrivalled metal ceiling solutions for a stunning refurbishment to The Atrium Building, Sandyford. SAS was selected for its unique SAS740i linear ceiling solution with integrated lighting. This ceiling design, characterised by floating rafts, influenced the entire atrium design. Specified in a contemporary grey, SAS740i rafts were suspended 20m below the glass atrium room through a stainless-steel cable system. Black SAS130 Mesh tiles were also installed to contribute to the industrial architecture. Completed in November 2018, SAS designed and delivered timeless metal ceiling solutions that will bring the building well into the next phase of its lifetime.

The refurbishment of 30 Panton Street has created an outstanding mixed-use development in London. In the entrance hall, full height dark umber anodised wall panels stand out against the polished stone walls and floors. Guiding visitors to upper floors, the aluminium panels have unique integrated lighting strips adding a warm glow to the foyer. Over the office security gates, pale umber anodised SAS200 leads visitors to the stairs, lifts and upper levels. Both the wall panels and ceiling system have a flush, concealed grid echoing the clean lines of the stone wall and floor panels.

SAS International delivered standard and bespoke SAS metal ceiling systems to PwC, Manchester. Across the main workspaces, SAS330 was installed presenting a pristine and uniform aesthetic which contributes to the open-plan design. For the communal area, bespoke hexagonal SAS600 rafts were designed and manufactured to protect the specified lights. SAS810 Tricell was installed in the break-out area contributing to the sleek and intelligent design. Further floors were completed in early 2019 which introduced SAS330 Mesh in 12 meeting rooms. This striking people-centric office space has won the Fit Out of Workplace Award at the BCO Awards.

Signbox transformed the London base of one of the world’s leading management consultant and professional services firms using an innovative wayfinding and environmental graphics solution. The scheme incorporated floor level directories, secondary wayfinding, suspended directional signs, room numerals, manifestations, desk signs and environmental supergraphics. Premium materials were utilised throughout, including laser-cut acrylic with embedded LEDs, aperture-cut metal trays with push-through lettering, scratch-resistant, Lintec opti-clear manifestation film, Digimura supergraphics a digitally printed wallcovering, fire rated to EN13501 and compliant to EN15102, internally-illuminated LED light sheets.

Bespoke ‘Deep Night Sky’ Corian trough vanities and Diamond Black Formica laminate full height Alto toilet cubicle doors combine to create a sophisticated washroom space perfect for International construction services company ISG’s flagship London head office. The solid surface construction of Corian means the striking colour runs consistently all the way through for a perfectly neat and unified appearance, creating an attractive, hygienic finish. Washroom’s Tego hinged access mirrors, manufactured with bespoke curved edges and LED back-lights, were installed above the vanities, providing a practical storage solution for essential washroom consumables.

At Mayfield Place in Winkfield, Bloor had planned and designed seven five-bedroomed luxury houses. Whitesales were asked to provide sleek, minimalist rooflights which would complement the homes’ design. Em-Glaze modular ridgelights are modular rooflights available in standard sizes from stock, with a choice of glazing and ventilation options. They exceed all regulations for impact-resistance, durability, environmental and thermal performance. Two rooflights were supplied and installed for each home; one in the deep open-plan dining areas and the other above the first-floor landing and stairwell, casting natural light through both floors.

Wood effect Expona Design luxury vinyl tiles in Light Elm were installed in the bistro, reception area, corridors and also in the village exercise studio. The £9.5 million state-of-the-art Belong Warrington care village, designed by Pozzoni Architecture Ltd, is a community facility, including village centre amenities, households for residents who require 24 hour dementia and nursing care, and independent living apartments.

Working with architect, Sheppard Robson, and contractor, Overbury, Style was specified to install two Dorma Hüppe semi-automatic Variflex glass moveable walls in Wellington Place, a group of prestigious, mixed-use developments in Leeds city centre. Separating the catering facility from meeting areas in a key office building, the glass operable walls deliver an impressive 52dB Rw acoustic integrity, providing outstanding privacy for meetings and gatherings whilst maximising the use of natural light. Addressing the ongoing need for social distancing, moveable wall systems can be effectively utilised to create discrete employee ‘bubbles’ by dividing office space into smaller areas.

Replacing an Original 1949 Roofing Waterproofing System Including New Rooflights

Perry Hall Academy, a large primary school built in 1949, with original waterproofing still in-situ. IKO assisted the Academy funding bid by providing a detailed survey report, including intrusive core sample analysis. The roofs were suffering from water ingress, cracks in the mastic asphalt, pooled water and poor heat retention, so decision was made to replace the roofs throughout. New rooflights were also specified to allow more natural light in while the design chosen reduced the external noise transmission. IKO worked with specifier Concept Education Services to deliver the project (some work during term-time) within 6 months.

A new flagship high quality office development in Aberdeen city centre will have state-of-the-art management systems installed in all its washrooms to help control energy and water use. Annan House forms part of a £100m redevelopment project called The Grande delivered by Drum Property Group on a former derelict site. The eight-storey offices will have 36 Sensazone washroom systems installed to help lower water and energy consumption. Sensazone is a low-cost system which uses infrared sensors to control energy output, water supply, lighting and ventilation, providing complete management control over individual commercial washrooms.

With the client objectives around providing a safe and enhanced experience, Classic provided a range of products for floor safety and easy accessibility for the visually impaired. Classic’s PBC102 black anodised aluminium stair nosing for broadloom carpeted steps complete with light grey colour insert were supplied and installed across the George St. premises. Classic also installed individual stainless steel tactile indicators across all access points, making them safe and accessible to all segments of the population.

Pump House recently supplied a number of their flat roof plant support frames to the REEC School development in Twickenham. The mechanical contractor on the project, chose Flexi Support Systems to support their rooftop air-handling units and packaged chillers. All flexi frames are fully adjustable, due to their M24 adjustable leg assemblies supplied as standard. Pump House carry out full load management reviews of all services being supported on their frameworks.
