Peel Park Quarter is a new, state of the art student accommodation complex at the University of Salford. The £81 million project was managed by Graham Construction who aimed to achieve long-term sustainability for the new student village. Tobermore helped the contractor accomplish this goal with the provision of an attractive SuDS solution for the expansive landscape.

Timber Conservation™ windows and doors by Mumford & Wood have been specified by a building developer for his own residential property in Poole, Dorset. This large coastal town, once a maritime trade hub, has attracted tourists and visitors to its beaches and landscapes for many decades and is an established area of beauty.

The low maintenance benefits and an aesthetic sympathetic to its location led to the specification of Eternit’s corrosion-resistant profiled sheeting as an external cladding solution for an award-winning development by designers, Soup Architects, called The Studios. The project has been built within a mature landscaped garden on an existing residential plot at Aldeburgh in Suffolk.

Saturday 2nd July 2016 marked the Centenary celebrations of the famous Cunard building in Liverpool – one of the city’s world–famous Three Graces. To bring the Cunard company’s legacy to life, the Hardscape team was commissioned by BCA Landscape in collaboration with design agency Smiling Wolf to craft an epic 50-metre granite stone seat.

One of our largest jobs to date approx. 3,800 m² of Vantage MF panels adorning the Unite Building at the everchanging landscape of Wembley. The façade comprises of Aluminium Vantage MF mechanically face fixed flat and slot perforated panels, powder coated to YW273F Jaisalmer finish, expertly installed by Metclad Contracts Ltd.

Previously renovated in 2005, Marina Palamós is undergoing a profound and ambitious transformation, aimed at considerably enriching the port’s coastal heritage and the quality of its landscape. A project that is designed to improve livability, with spaces that are more shaded, comfortable and wrapped in green. Urbidermis is diving into the project, providing a holistic perspective that addresses lighting, furniture, microarchitecture and vegetation.

Completed in April 2013, the redevelopment of the seafront at Redcar was undertaken by landscape architects and urban designers, Smeeden Foreman. As winners of a RIBA International Design Competition, they led a team of architects and engineers, in conjunction with Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, Environment Agency and Birse Civils Ltd, that brought to life an ambitious plan for this North Yorkshire seaside town.

Sevenoaks School’s Science & Technology Centre, designed by Tim Ronalds Architects, brings together a diverse set of disciplines and “puts learning, education and experimentation on display”. Daylit and naturally ventilated throughout, the £23m development has a robust interior of expressive structure, evident construction and natural materials, yet feels highly transparent, with views to the landscape and beyond.

The grounds at St. Patrick’s Church in Castlederg, Northern Ireland, was redeveloped with a traditional style landscape created with Tobermore’s Tegula and Tegula Setts block paving. The charming, aged aesthetics of the product complemented the historic church building beautifully and the creation of a celtic-themed circular paving design was used to create a focal point and enhance the character of the site.

The University of Gloucestershire’s strategic commitment to be “centred on students” was integral to the scheme. The striking courtyard required a combination of permeable and impermeable paving. The area of permeable paving is centred within the area of standard paving which necessitated complementary products. Ireland Albrecht Landscape Architects sought paving that was similar in style and format for both permeable and impermeable areas.

Echoing the earthy red tones of the industrial heritage of Manchester and the surrounding new-build complex, Piccadilly Place is the stunning central plaza of a landmark mixed use development. The incorporation of Wienerberger’s Dutch Clay paving Padova (Eindhoven Mixed Red) enabled landscape architects Austin-Smith:Lord to complete the scheme with a pallet of complimentary colours and textures.

Located at the heart of Paddington Central, Sheldon Square is best known for its amphitheatre, where a range of activities take place every day. From lunch with colleagues and friends to a special location for live music and culture, Sheldon Square and its amphitheatre are much loved by those that live and work there.  In 2022 the area benefited from a makeover which saw improved facilities, better accessibility, a more dynamic performance space and a greener space added. New trees, sun-loving plants and over 40 colourful perennials were added to not only create a vibrant display but were chosen for their ability to reduce pollution, improve air quality and to increase biodiversity and climate change resilience. Working with Gillespies, alongside main contractors, 8Build, and soft landscape contractor, Kingston Landscape Group, Boughton supplied over 80m3 of its ever-popular BLS 2 topsoil to site in bulk bags. Single-sourced, ‘as dug’ natural and screened, Boughton’s BLS 2 topsoil was specified for this project by Gillespies.  

Republic is a new campus at East India Docks: the design is centred around well-being at work with a focus on daylight and ventilation, direct connections with nature through the planting in the biodiverse central gardensThe first phase commenced in October 2016 and the public realm was completed towards the end of 2018The campus will ultimately provide 650,000 sq ft of high-quality affordable workplace, a wide range of amenities, generous public realm and extensive green spaces.BLOC sun bench can be used on its own or joined in rows and back to back. The design philosophy for this project was to create a highly-efficient and architecturally-stunning world class winery for Yealands Estate. Inspired by the landscape, the curved roof mirrors the shape of the nearby rolling hills, and the overall building is reminiscent of traditional family run countryside wineries.The building features a highly insulated envelope and is considered one of the most environmentally friendly wineries ever built.

Milliken's Tectonic modular carpet from the Nordic Stories design collection flows seamlessly throughout this award-winning building in Falkenburg, Germany. Inspired by geological landscapes, the design was the perfect floor covering for this pared back office environment set in a stunning rural setting. The product's Comfort Lite cushion backing delivers excellent acoustic performance and underfoot comfort.

This £14 million Waitrose superstore is built on a brownfield site located in Bagshot, Surrey. The client wanted the new development to replace the green space lost to the building’s footprint and minimise its overall impact on the surrounding landscape. This was achieved through the installation of 4,800m2 of Bauder’s high quality, low maintenance sedum blanket, which is highly visible even at ground level.

The Gloucester Gateway M5 motorway services created a new sustainable standard in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The structures are built into the undulating hills softened with organic forms and green roofs. An ambitious landscaping solution required ACO to create a Sustainable Drainage System controlling rainwater run-off, while providing a high-quality habitat for wildlife to flourish.

A state of the art complex designed by KSS Architects encompassing a full-size indoor pitch signature building that moulds into the landscape forming the centrepiece of the masterplan, and integrated training centre building for first-team and academy squads.A bespoke copper metallic finish (Y4207I), considered a lucky colour in the native country of the club's Thai owners, adorns the futuristic envelope.

The Grange University Hospital was opened ahead of schedule in November 2020 to meet the winter season pressures exacerbated by Covid-19 second wave. The largest area of hard landscape is outside the main front entrance and includes a pedestrian concourse, bicycle storage, bus stop and a one-way vehicle looped driveway, all constructed as a bound modular pavement.

When Robert Doyle Ecobuild Ltd won the contract to build the 3,000 sq. ft. €2 million homes at Dalkey Avenue, the contractor sought hard landscaping products that could perform well over time while complementing the distinct aesthetics of the properties. Tobermore surpassed expectations with the provision of attractive permeable paving, block paving and kerbing products for the scheme.

Community play areas play a crucial role in promoting physical activity, creativity, and social interaction among children. Ensuring the safety and comfort of young adventurers is paramount, which is why the Balivanich Community Play Park took a significant step by choosing to install green rubber mulch around their play area. In this case study, we will explore the process and benefits of this innovative installation, highlighting the positive impact it has had on the community and its children.The Balivanich Community Play Park, located on the Isle of Benbecula, recognised the need for significant improvements to ensure user safety. The existing play area surface was outdated and required constant maintenance due to material migration. After careful consideration and consultation with the community, the decision was made to install rubber mulch as a safety-focused, sustainable, and low-maintenance solution.The community group chose PH Landscape Contracting Ltd, a trusted local landscaping company, to install the rubber mulch. The installation process began with the removal of the existing surface and meticulous groundwork preparation, including creating a sub-base and secure edge for the mulch. The rubber mulch was mixed with resin binder using a forced action mixer and then applied using a spazzle before the surface was hand-troweled to create a seamless finish, ensuring a safe and visually appealing play area.The installation of green rubber mulch brought numerous benefits to the Balivanich Community Play Park. Firstly, it significantly reduced the risk of fall-related injuries, providing a cushioned surface that absorbs impact. The accessibility of the play area was also improved, allowing anyone with mobility challenges to enjoy the space comfortably. The mulch's resistance to weather elements ensured year-round usage and reduced the need for frequent maintenance. Additionally, the non-slip surface provided stability for running, jumping, and playing, promoting a safe and enjoyable experience for children.The rejuvenation of the play area with rubber mulch received an overwhelmingly positive response from residents, parents, and children. DS Properties Employ Complementary Paving Solution at Historic PumphouseDS Properties undertook the task of redeveloping The Pumphouse in Barry which previously formed part of Barry’s historic dock complex and provided one of the few hydraulic power buildings in Wales. The building had gone unused for several years but had always remained a local landmark and so the decision was made to regenerate the site for housing and commercial accommodation. Retaining the nostalgic style of the historical Pumphouse was hugely important to DS Properties and therefore the developer was seeking hard landscaping products that would complement the traditional surroundings. Tobermore provided the perfect solution in the form of vintage-themed block paving product, Tegula, and striking plank paving product, Manhattan.Alex Knight, Development Surveyor at DS Properties, explained the project objectives: “The Pumphouse is a Grade II listed building constructed in the 1880’s and the aim of the refurbishment and new build scheme was to create the first local purpose-built live/work facility at the centre of Barry’s commercial regeneration, offering 14 live/work apartments, office units, a gym and a restaurant and cafe.”Acanthus Holden Architects was appointed to design the redevelopment works and the new build elements. DS Properties advised the architect that the landscape design needed to incorporate paving products to complement the period-themed Pumphouse building. Alex commented:“As tarmac was incorporated on part of the site, we wanted to break up the space and create a more visually attractive external area. The landscape needed to harmonise with the historic buildings and be sympathetic to the traditional backdrop on site.”ALEX KNIGHT, DEVELOPMENT SURVEYOR AT DS PROPERTIESThe choice of paving supplier was a relatively easy choice for DS Properties as Alex explained: “Tobermore products came highly recommended by one of our trusted suppliers, Robert Price, and after examining product samples kindly provided by the Tobermore South Wales Sales team, the aesthetics and quality was a key factor in confirming our decision to use Tobermore products.”Tobermore’s Tegula and Manhattan block paving was specified as the best method to meet the design vision for the project. Tegula is manufactured with an aged, antique appearance and so it was the perfect choice for the Pumphouse in creating a rustic look and complementing the historic structure beautifully.Manhattan is a plank paving system and although contemporary in style and contrasting to the traditional ambience of Tegula, the addition of this product reflected the modern new buildings on site. Manhattan is manufactured with a granite aggregate surface layer that produces a similar look to natural granite. As part of the landscape design, the linear paving product was delicately intertwined with Tegula to create a stylish square border pattern running throughout. The integration of Tobermore’s Tegula and Manhattan created a fabulous infusion of traditional and modern styles.The project was completed in early 2016, breathing new life into the town of Barry. Although only one building, the Pumphouse in an integral part of the regeneration of the town and is hoped to act as a catalyst for the wider regeneration of the area.Alex commented on the result of the redevelopment scheme: “Thankfully there were no issues encountered during the design and construction process. We are absolutely delighted with the result and in reference to the hard landscaping works, we would most certainly recommend the products and service provided by Tobermore – it was excellent.” 

Lochrin Bain’s Combi™ Palisade was the product of choice for Capita’s Landscape Architects working on their recent Waterfront Business Park project. With concerns raised by local Crime Prevention Officers over security breaches using traditional front fix Palisade, the proposed Secured By Design Combi system, installed on neighboring properties for a number of years ticked all the right boxes.

There was a clear requirement for the paving to provide Southwater One with a physical and symbolic link between the bold, unapologetically modernist external appearance of the development and its natural surroundings. The Siena (Hague Cream) pavers addressed that specification; the warm, sandy, tones blending with the surrounding natural landscape. In addition, the use of Wienerberger’s Mastiek and Auraton pavers, with their clean grey finishes, created a crisp waterfront patina.

With beautiful views of the Belvoir Valley, the client wanted a contemporary architectural piece that would integrate comfortably with its surrounding landscape whilst maintaining a natural yet modern 21st century aesthetic.Sustainability was at the forefront of the client’s brief, who wanted a recycled material for the external cladding that would accommodate the robust, maintenance-free and high quality requirements of the build. A new world-class entertainment centre in Aberdeen, featuring hard landscaping products from AG, is set to be the envy of cities across Europe! Named P&J Live, the state-of-the-art event complex opened in September 2019 and is the largest new entertainment complex in Europe.Boasting 48,000 sqm of flexible event space, world-class conference and exhibition facilities plus a superior 15,000 capacity arena, the £333 million landmark project also includes two hotels – the Hilton and the Aloft.The project was a joint venture between Aberdeen City Council, Henry Boot Developments (HBD) and Robertson, who were the main contractors on the project.AG’s Head of Specification & Commercial Sales (Northern Region), David Speirs commented:“It was the largest ever project for both firms and we were thrilled to have been awarded the contract to supply AG products on such a high-status development.It was a major win for AG. With more evidence emerging to suggest our surroundings are highly influential when it comes to feeling motivated and inspired, universities and other learning institutes are now placing more of a focus on the look, feel and materials used within their environments than ever before. Therefore, the architects Evans Vettori Architects decided to choose Wienerberger’s Rosa Waterstruck WF clay pavers to complement the landscaping of the site works.

IDPartnership Specifies Tobermore Paving at £20m Student Village in NewcastleArchitect, IDPartnership, was seeking a hard landscaping solution for Portland Green, a new £20 million student village in Shieldfield, Newcastle upon Tyne, that would be attractive yet functional. Tobermore provided the architect with the perfect solution with the supply of striking Sienna, modern Fusion and smooth Shannon block paving products.The project was managed by Metnor Group and is hoped to breathe new life into the area and boost trade for local restaurants, bars and retail outlets.The first phase, consisting of a 274 bedroom luxury student accommodation building and 2 retail units, was completed in 2013 and the second phase, consisting of a 338 bedroom accommodation building and 4,500 sq. ft. of retail space, was completed in late 2015.David Moore, Senior Associate at IDPartnership, explained that the objective for the outdoor space at the student accommodation complex was to “provide quality hard landscaping around the building and in the centrally located courtyard at a reasonable cost.“We decided that block paving was the most suitable solution as it was in fitting with other paved projects we had designed nearby.“The landscape design concept was to define different areas and routes on campus that could also provide a colourful contrast to the dark brick apartment buildings.”David Moore, Senior Associate at IDPartnershipThe architect liaised with Tobermore’s North East Sales team in a bid to achieve a landscape with aesthetic appeal and sustainability. David said:“What impressed us most about Tobermore was the range of products, the beautiful colours available, and the cost-effectiveness.”A selection of Tobermore’s Sienna block paving in the colours of Graphite and Silver, and Fusion block paving in the colours of Cream, Silver and Graphite was specified for the area surrounding the project.Sienna and Fusion are manufactured with a granite aggregate surface layer that produces a sparkling, modern look, similar to natural granite. Sienna is available in single sizes and duo sizes while Fusion is a modular sized product.IDPartnership also selected Tobermore’s smooth Shannon block paving in the vibrant, blended colour of Heather. Shannon was installed within the courtyard area and has enhanced the beauty of the complex and provided a stylish outdoor space for residents to unwind in.Fusion Kerb in a striking granite aggregate finish was chosen as the appropriate kerbing solution to complement the paving products used across the site.On reflection of the completion of phase two of this project, David Moore said, “I’m very happy with the products supplied by Tobermore, so much so, that we are already using more products on the next two phases.“We would recommend Tobermore for any type of project.”

TPM Landscape, Manchester were appointed to design an enclosed courtyard space and two roof terraces for a new student residential development in Paul Street, Shoreditch, London. The courtyard is designed to offer an attractive and engaging outdoor environment for students to enjoy during the day and at night time. The roof terraces incorporate movable furniture to create flexible spaces, allowing students to enjoy views over the London skyline.

Stately Home, Hestercombe House, has unveiled the first milestone in an extensive 18-month project, which will see 15 rooms in the 320-acre estate being redecorated.Thanks to specialist redecoration services and expert colour insights from Crown Paints, the interior of the Portman and Jekyll rooms now reflects the estate’s luscious 50-acre Georgian landscape garden, blending the boundaries between indoors and outdoors.

This extravagant garden was designed by Adolfo Harrison (Landscaping work carried out by Town & Country Gardens), featuring our La Roche Luna acid-etched limestone, bespoke steps, and pool copings. Our La Roche Luna is a dark, earthy limestone with fossil and highlight detailing, giving the stone a gentle character. It is a dense, durable, and hard-wearing material, with versatility for both interior and exterior uses.

Hudson Quarter is a prestigious, multi-award-winning, mixed-use development of 127 apartments and 9,570m2 of Grade A office space. The apartments are housed within three residential buildings with one office building based around a central courtyard. The sustainable project achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating upon completion.  The site, previously an existing 1960’s office building is based in a highly sensitive location within the ancient city walls of York. Sensitively designed to sit comfortably within its historic setting, Hudson Quarter has been created respecting its past whilst embracing 21st century working and living.  A dedicated parking area was incorporated into the design, available for both office staff and residents. Tobermore worked closely with the design team to ensure appropriate hard landscaping was chosen for the large car park adjacent to Hudson Quarter.  Tobermore’s Artro block paving was perfect for Hudson Quarter as it can withstand significant trafficking and its clay-like look adds a heritage feel with a modern twist to the hard landscaping. The herringbone laying pattern was specified, not only for appearance, but also because of its trafficability. 

After almost 30 years, Bellway Homes has relocated to a new purpose-built headquarter office building. Based in Newcastle Upon Tyne, the company have settled into the newly formed energy- efficient Airview Park adjacent to Newcastle Airport.  The company were previously based in a small, listed property with cellular offices that were no longer fit for purpose. With light and spacious open-plan office space, the move was the perfect opportunity to support the company’s growth.  The facility houses 100 staff members and include high-spec welfare facilities including a gym, breakout room and a roof terrace. The state-of-the-art office space also features a new training hub providing educational facilities for Bellway Academy. Benefitting from a rich landscape setting, the overall design concept was to create a ‘Pavilion in a Park’. With this in mind, the external design was equally as important as the building itself. Various Tobermore block paving and permeable paving products were used. The hard landscaping featured Tobermore’s award winning paving product Braemar. The premium product fulfilled both aesthetic and design aspirations. 

Fitzroy Place is a regeneration of the former Middlesex Hospital, making a collection of beautiful homes arranged around a stunning landscaped square in the heart of Fitzrovia, a prime area which has long been one of central London’s most cherished neighbourhoods.InterLace designed, manufactured and installed roller blinds to more than 230 luxury apartments along with specialist electric blinds and curtain tracks to the four exclusive penthouses atop the development.
