Permeable paving provides the SuDS solution for a Social Housing development

Early on in the design of this Social Housing scheme at Stump Cross, Pontefract, it was decided that only a permeable pavement would work as the SuDS solution for this development.
As the existing drainage infrastructure in the area was already working close to its capacity any additional run off from this developments could cause surface water flooding. Swales and ponds were not be feasible as there was insufficient space available for them. A permeable pavement was therefore chosen as there was no additional land take involved.

The first part of a vital £23m project to alleviate the risk of flooding in Hull has been completed with product, design support and on-site assistance from Brett Landscaping.Brett Landscaping has worked with contractor Morrisons Water Services, Yorkshire Water and Hull City Council to retrofit Rosmead Street, a residential street vulnerable to surface water flooding, supplying 4,000 square metres of concrete block permeable paving.The Rosmead Street scheme is the first part of a £23m investment in surface water management schemes planned across Hull and East Riding due to be completed over the next five years, coordinated by the Living With Water partnership. Hull has always been a city susceptible to flooding, due to its location on low lying land alongside the Humber estuary and River Hull. Surface water from the surrounding area and city itself has to flow through a series of drainage and sewer networks to discharge into the estuary. This system was challenged in 2007 when over 9,000 properties were flooded. Since then the partners have joined together to work on increasing the cities resilience through awareness and engagement, alongside investment in the infrastructure. The Living With Water partnership was set up by Hull City Council, East Riding Of Yorkshire, Environment Agency, Yorkshire Water and University of Hull with two key objectives to educate the community and look at ways to mitigate the problems with surface water drainage in the area, based on the concerns and requirements of residents.At Rosmead Street the Living With Water team committed to a SuDS retrofit scheme that would help to mitigate any future serious rainfall incidents by removing the original MacAdam roadway and using permeable paving to attenuate the water flow and ease pressure on the sewer systems.

Brett was able to provide 305 m2 ofInvicta Trio in each of the threecolours – Moonstone, Onyx, andPearl – as well as an additional 20m2 of mixed size paving in 80mm ofeach colour for the project. Bycombining these colours, the clientwas able to create an eye-catching,mix n match design leading up tothe Leisure Centre entrance.Brett’s Invicta block pavingproducts were able to solve severalchallenges faced by the project,including the need for a suitableproduct that was readily availableand competitively priced. WithBrett’s help, the paving contractorwas able to source the requiredpaving products without any delays,ensuring that the project wascompleted on time and withinbudget.

The £50million development is situated on the Doncaster iPort logistics estate, and is the hub for more than 53 supermarket stores based across South Yorkshire, the Midlands and Lincolnshire. With more than 3,900 pallets leaving the site via HGV each day 2,500 Trief GST2A kerb were installed to the perimeter of the large distribution centre building, site entrance points and security booths to protect them against accidental vehicle impacts damaging the structures.

Trief Cadet GST1A were used across Vale Road bridge which connects the Rhyl to its rail station. Cadet offered a unique solution to protect the Victorian bridge structure without compromising the existing access across the bridge.
Vale Road bridge had many design aspects which included protecting the structure from the rigours of passing traffic, without reducing the width of the carriageway available for traffic to pass and maintaining access for pedestrians. A further challenge was the effective drainage of rain water build-up to the rear of the kerbs.

A housing development in Southminster has benefitted from having an access road installed with machine lay block paving to deliver a speedy and high quality finish in outstanding time.
The access road was only 3m wide and by laying the blocks by hand, there would have been only enough room for two operatives to work side by side. This meant the entire 83m stretch of road would have taken three days to complete and would have delayed follow-on trades so the road surface needed to be completed quickly.
