John Lennon International Airport

John Lennon International Airport

Geocel

As part of the £30 million development of Britain’s fastest growing regional airport, Liverpool John Lennon Airport, A striking building-high glass façade, was developed using 1.8m high panels, some up to 2.25 metres wide, bonded to the aluminium sections using DOWSIL 993 silicone. The façade’s ability to perform under blast conditions was a prime consideration. But this important safety priority was not to impinge on the strong aesthetic impact, which the glazed façade was designed to create.

Planet

Chevron is an American multinational energy company, active in more than 180 countries. Planet had carried out all the internal partitioning for Chevron’s new 110,000 sq. ft. building eight years previously and stood the test of time, so JM Architects asked that Planet draw up the specification to meet the client’s acoustic performance requirements. Using p100 double glazed partitioning for all meeting rooms and offices ensured high acoustic performance, while applying a ‘V’ shaped orange design on both the inside and outside provided contrast and depth. Installing double glazed doors also complemented p100 in looks and performance.

Planet

Hill Partnership asked Planet Partitioning to oversee all the internal partitioning requirements at its new two-storey Head Office – an old gunpowder mill in Essex. The atrium voids and room frontages featured p100 single-glazed demountable partitioning – chosen because its thick framework complemented the robust and open steel framework of the building. Planet Partitioning used vertex dry joints to ensure a virtually invisible glass partitioning joint and the highest acoustic insulation. Manifestation film applied to the partitioning provided visual contrast and added privacy. Eclipse sliding doors maximised usable floor space in all offices and meeting rooms.
Chorlton High School Laminate Lockers Project

Chorlton High School Laminate Lockers Project

Helmsman

It’s prime time for the education sector to refurbish and service institutions. Helmsman manufactured and installed almost 200 new laminate lockers in a high school in Manchester. These laminate lockers were extra heavy duty. Having ‘extra’ heavy-duty lockers means that the laminate doors inset into the locker frame and creates extra durability. The advanced locking design provides a return lip within the internal door frame for the hooked cam to lock behind. In addition, there is a locking slot in the door frame upright that enables secure locking in two places. These stable and fire retardant four compartment lockers have created storage for 776 students. The Laminate used was Arpa Fucisa, which makes the corridors pop. The laminate lockers are all standard sizes of 1775mm high x 300mm wide x 450mm deep. This project included a standard 150 mm stand with the rear leg which has been cladded with matching laminate panels to have a fully secure, clean and aesthetically pleasing effect. Arpa Fucisa also used for the sidewall to locker infill. Chorlton school chose to have engraved numbers on each locker door. Using this solution for numbering protects the lockers from vandalism.Helmsman is the leading manufacturer of a complete range of lockers and cubicles in the UK and a specialist in providing solutions across different sectors from leisure, healthcare and education through to commercial, retail, construction and industrial. With a dedicated and experienced in-house design team supported by its on-site factory, the company produces high-quality lockers manufactured for each project.
Charles De Gaulle International Airport

Charles De Gaulle International Airport

Watco UK Ltd

Project details Charles de Gaulle International Airport is the second largest airport in Europe after London Heathrow. It is located just outside Paris and handles over 50 million passengers every year. For this reason it can be difficult to find the time for maintenance and repairs. "The airports floors have to withstand constant heavy traffic from passengers, staff and maintenance workers. It was therefore important that their repair and paint products were quick to apply, cure and hard wearing." The work that needed to be carried out was at the entrance to Terminal 3 which is the main public transport hub for Charles de Gaulle. For this reason the work needed to be carried out and finished between the hours of 9.30pm and 6.30am. After this time heavy traffic would resume. Our solution The first job was to clean the concrete floor slabs with Watco Concroff to remove all surface contaminants including oil and fats. Watco Concroff contains no solvents or other chemicals that are dangerous for the environment and penetrates even the thickest deposits of grease. The floor was then primed with Tack Coat, an epoxy resin adhesive primer which guarantees excellent grip on the key surface. As Charles de Gaulle is subjected to such heavy constant traffic a standard mortar would not be sufficient to withstand this, for this reason they choose Watco Concrex® Carbon Fibre. As it is as strong as granite it could be smoothed to a thickness of only 3mm, making the surface both waterproof and slip resistant. The Concrex® was subsequently painted with Safety Coat. Safety Coat is roller applied and contains fine, traction enhancing particles embedded in an epoxy resin coating so this coating was ideal for providing a non slip surface for added security.

Zoeftig Ltd

Zoeftig’s Far Eastern portfolio is expanding fast. With a new office now open in Kuala Lumpur, and the company having already fitted out major terminal developments in China, the Zoeftig name is fast becoming known and respected in the region. This position has been further strengthened with the completion of Zoeftig’s latest fit out, as part of Hong Kong International Airport’s new HK$10 billion Midfield Concourse (MFC).Over 5,500 of its inFINITE seats and 1,600 power positions were fitted as part of the new 105,000m2 complex, and in-seat power was a key driver behind the design and configuration of the seating solution. The bespoke designs, installed in stunning red and grey colourways, feature Zoeftig’s market leading in-seat power solutions. The special individual USB charging modules were developed for optimum passenger convenience, with each of the twin USB sockets capable of delivering 2.4 amps of power simultaneously; going beyond the capabilities of traditional socket USB charging points, which are restricted to a maximum of 1.2 amps when both sockets are in use. This means that tablet devices can be charged at the same speed as they would be if connected to a 220v or 110v supply. Traditional USB charging points will only ‘trickle charge’, so the inclusion of the Zoeftig’s USB charging modules negates the need for the airport to supply mains voltage power to each seat. All USB sockets are also replaceable without needing to change the transforming module, allowing for the low cost replacement of damaged USB sockets. All modules were produced and colour matched to the new seats and all feature full closed system cable management to ensure maximum passenger safety. Alongside safety, practicality was another key design factor. Cable management is one specific area that Zoeftig has worked to further develop for bespoke projects like Hong Kong and this work has culminated in a number of new solutions. Zoeftig’s power feed cable with braided sheathing is designed to run from the floor box to the leg conduit. The sheathing is then clamped at each end to protect the seating connections and the plug in the floor box from accidental strain. A specially designed clamp grips the power feed cable at the appropriate length and is then locked into position when the floor box cover is inserted into the floor box base frame. The unique shape of the clamp ensures that the cables exit lies flat on the floor; thus protecting the cables and minimising trip risks to passengers. Another feature of the safe cable management design includes a cable clamp positioned on the seat’s rear leg. This method allows the clamp to rotate around the leg whilst providing a strong mounting location and protects the internal cables and conduits from accidental movement and strain.

JS Air Curtains has supplied eight air curtains to the Welcome Break motorway services at Membury on the M4. The air curtains are helping to maintain internal temperatures even with the external doors in constant use.The air curtains were installed by Russell Air Conditioning. Five 2m Windbox air curtains and three HeatScreen air curtains are positioned at the front entrance, rear entrance and on some internal doorways.Ray Drinkwater, Facilities Manager at Membury Services, commented, “Without the air curtains the doors acted like a wind tunnel with the cold air blowing right through. The air curtains from JS were recommended by Russell Air Conditioning and have done a great job in stopping the cold air entering.”In total the air curtains are capable of providing over 21,000m3/h of airflow to seal the doorways. As well as keeping the heat in during the winter, they can also be used with the heaters off in the summer to prevent air conditioned air from escaping. The Windbox air curtain has a powerful output and can be used on doorways up to 3.5m high. It can be horizontally mounted above a doorway or vertically to the side. The units supplied to Welcome Break were white but the Windbox is available in any RAL colour to suit interior architecture. PPG Protective Coatings

PPG interior and exterior coatings are enhancing protection, safety and sustainability for the new Beijing Daxing International Airport terminal building. The terminal, which is the largest in the world at 7.5 million square feet, was designed and constructed using green concepts. It features four PPG products on its main structural steel and other metal components: PPG STEELGUARD™ FM 550 thin-film intumescent coating for fire protection; PPG PSXTM 700 two-component, engineered siloxane coating for exterior protection; PPG SIGMADUR™ 2800 fluorocarbon finish for all-around weather resistance; and PPG DURANAR™ fluoropolymer coating for exceptional durability. PPG STEELGUARD FM 550 coating was applied to the terminal’s main steel structure, including the main hall, concourses and boarding gates. The coating provides up to 150 minutes of protection from cellulosic fires. The high-performance topcoat system also extends a painted surface’s lifespan to 15 to 20 years compared to five to eight years for traditional polyurethane topcoats. “The PPG team successfully solved a number of challenges regarding the application of the cellulosic passive fire protection coating to the steel superstructure,” said Xin Cheng, PPG passive fire protection support manager, protective and marine coatings (PMC). “These included applying the coating in an exposed outdoor environment during winter and maintaining a complex and tight balance between stringent on-site safety management and control, construction quality management and project schedule control.” Coating the structural steel before the roof was put on the terminal building was a major reason on-site coater RIC Red-Hendsel (Beijing) International Construction Co., Ltd., recommended PPG STEELGUARD FM 550 coating The coating provides protection from outdoor exposure for up to 12 months without a topcoat. “Our country is paying increasing attention to safety, and the standards are becoming stricter,” said Weiqin Wang, managing director, RIC Red-Hendsel (Beijing). “Under this overarching premise, we worked with PPG's technical team to solve engineering problems and win the owner's approval with top-notch quality in both application and the coating product.” PPG SIGMADUR 2800 air-drying fluorocarbon topcoat, which was used for the main steel structure of the airport terminal building, can maintain color stability and self-cleaning properties under prolonged ultraviolet radiation. It is resistant to cracking, corrosion and mechanical impact. The steel grid structure of the airport roof is coated extensively with PPG PSX 700 topcoat. This patented polysiloxane technology offers extended color and gloss retention that outperforms typical polyurethane and has corrosion resistance equaling that of epoxy. The coating has high solid content with low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and meets strict environmental protection regulations. The roof’s golden exterior is protected by PPG Duranar fluoropolymer coating, which offers durable color retention and exceptional performance against weathering in all environments. The product meets AAMA 2605 performance specifications. “In coating steel structures like those at the new Beijing Daxing International Airport, sustainability mainly is achieved in three ways,” said Wen Zhou, PPG general manager, PMC, Asia Pacific. “The first is reducing material waste and emissions and increasing safety through effective fire protection. The second is conserving resources by extending product life and reducing the frequency of repairs. The third is protecting people's health and the environment through reduced VOC emissions.”
