Yeoman Shield Anti-Ligature handrail system is being utilized in a newly commissioned dementia unit in South Wales.Ysbyty George Thomas, as part of Cwm Taf Health board’s Valley Life Initiative, has recently undergone a refurbishment to become a health and wellbeing centre for people with cognitive and memory problems.Throughout the design process of the new Dementia Unit, comfort and functionality for clients who would be accessing the area was paramount. Not only were aesthetics taken into consideration with a stunning welsh valleys mural wallpaper installed in between bright colourful “front doors” but safety aspects were of a prime concern.For safeguarding measures Yeoman Shield’s Anti- Ligature Guardian Handrail was chosen, as both a supportive and wall protection rail system, along the main corridor of Ysbyty George Thomas as well as through the Dementia Unit.This Anti-Ligature handrail has a continuous fixing block which runs the full length of the back of the rail eliminating any points that can easily have a length of material or cord wound around it, preventing the possibility of harm to patients. Yeoman Shield recently supplied and installed a handrail system in an NHS Trust’s seven mental health accommodation units.With a requirement for a handrail that was also sensitive to the nature of service users, an Anti-Ligature Guardian Handrail was chosen from the Yeoman Shield range to be fitted to corridor and passage way walls, offering both support as a handrail for those who may require it as well as a form of protection from impact damage to walls from footfall and wheeled equipment.Using a continuous fixing bracket running the full length of the handrail installation eliminates points where ligatures can be attached. ASF were working with Elite Landscapes on a number of elements of the extensive renovation of the White City area of London. As part of this ASF were approached to manufacture and supply illuminated handrail to a number of stepped and ramped areas along the site. Lighting was specified to achieve lux levels of 15-20 at all points.ASF used site drawings to create our own layouts that were signed off by the manufacturer. These layout drawings included not only the handrails, but luminaire positioning, lighting diagrams and enclosure / cabling details that the site would need to have in order to install.ASF supplied the handrails as modular elements to meet 0.74kN loading, pre built up in our factory to sections as large as we could affordably deliver to reduce the need for site building as much as possible.Lighting was sent, bespoke manufactured for each handrail, as a plug and play set up, with all necessary drivers, in a kit form
ASF 5006 Handrailing at Bradford Library Steps

ASF were approached to replace some tired yet serviceable handrailing at the old Bradford Library in a change of use project. ASF used the popular 5006 posts with mitred tops and supplied a large central double handrail alongside a single handrail for a walled section. There was also a small section of single handrail supplied for a small side entry to the area. Pleasingly, ASF mitred the top of the bollard to match the angle of descent of the steps rather than just do them at the usual 45 degrees.ASF combined this with glass balustrade for the elevated walkway on the building concourse, which can be seen on some of the images.

ASF produced the full gamut of variants for this project, all using the ASF 5006 mitred top post system to give continuity. 114mm diameter post uprights were used to offer a substantial framework for these barrier and handrail systems. Some areas needed only handrail so a single sided underslung system was provided, with wrap around end profiles offering a pleasing end point to individual sections.On the post and panel sections a 48mm diameter top rail was used in conjunction with stainless steel perforated panels. These meshed perfectly into the step units that swapped seamlessly from post mounted to wall mounted handrail.Curves, corners and steps were included on this project

ASF used the Exmouth Stainless Steel Post and Rail system to manufacture bespoke handrailing for the new handrail installations at Exmouth Beach. Manufactured in marine grade 316 stainless steel and finished bright polished to avoid discoloration, each of the 12 stepped areas required individually measuring and bespoke rails manufatured to suit.

Designed by SP&Architects and constructed by Wharton Construction Ltd, the store’s mixture of new build and refurbishment won Best commercial building/scheme in the North & East Yorkshire region at Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence Awards 2016. Neaco’s Quad stanchion was specified with tubular toprails and toughened glass infills to provide a contemporary solution on an internal stairway and mezzanine floor.

The sides of the pontoon, bridge and ramp at Battersea’s river boat service required ultra safe balustrades. These had to be a natural fit to the industrial environment. The Square Line 60x30 stainless steel balustrade perfectly suited the job. Its stainless steel posts were welded to the pier for extra robustness, and toughened glass infills of 10 mm thick were added. The Q-lights Spotlight LED system was invisibly embedded in the handrails for extra safety at night. The industrial looking stainless steel elements of the Square Line 60x30 system add to the appearance of the pier.

Modernising historic properties can bring major challenges. The architects at Fuse Studios gave careful consideration to this question as they prepared for a refurbishment of the Fine Arts building at Leeds University. Early on, the new access ramp at the front entrance was identified as an important visual centrepiece.
The architects opted to use Q-railing products, including an LED-lit handrail, when creating an ultra-safe glass railing for the ramp. Q-railing recommended the Easy Glass Max system. It is highly robust, meeting all the relevant safety requirements with ease, and yet provides an uninterrupted glazed area.

ASF 128 Bollard / Step Unit Handrail

ASF's 128 pattern cast iron bollard was used in this project as the post for a bespoke step unit. One side of the steps was fixed to a set of railings (also by ASF) by a core fixing directly to the bollard upright. The handrails themselves were bespoke manufactured mild steel, galvanised rails, with steel side mounting brackets made to mechanically fix into the ASF 128 Bollards.

At Fishguard Primary School HEWI provided a safe environment for the children whilst blending aesthetically with the theme of the building. Coloured polyamide was chosen for the main staircase with clear safety glass infll, soft touch door handles where used throughout. Externally, Circum satin finish grade 316 stainless steel was chosen for all areas, including access ramps and steps from the car park, with post mounted handrails and perforated stainless steel infll. Safety glass panels, in clear and 5 differing colours was used on a balcony. Matching perforated stainless steel infll panels were incorporated on stairs.

Lambton House Care Home in County Durham, has taken extreme care in designing a home that caters for the lifestyle of their older generation clients. New Care Unit at William Harvey Hospital

Yeoman Shield were assigned by main contractors Bauvill Construction to install a wall and door protection system as part of the scheme to create a new Cardiac Critical Care Unit (CCU) and Cardiology ward along with an access corridor at William Harvey Hospital in Kent.The access corridor was fitted with Yeoman Shield’s Guardian Twin Handrail in a stunning colour combination of burgundy and mid grey with matching accessories and attractive stainless steel connective brackets helping to add a unique touch to the décor of the area.Chosen for its dual functionality the Guardian Twin handrail incorporates an ergonomic upper handrail as support for people who require assistance and a lower robust protection rail, which sitting slightly forward guards both the handrail and the walls from marking and damage caused by the passage of wheeled equipment.The same Guardian Twin Handrail system was also deployed in the CCU this time with a red lower rail, a striking contrast to the mid grey handrail. REQUIREMENT: Whilst major works were being carried out, temporary wheelchair access to an alternative entrance was necessary.The systems had to overcome the concrete steps and fully comply with Part K and M of the Building Regulations.END RESULT:The fitters worked different shifts over three days and two nights to ensure the project was completed by the deadline.The platforms include a 1:15 gradient and fully comply with Documents M & K of the Building Regulations. A step system was also fitted for able-bodied access, and mid-handrail in yellow at 600mm high was installed on both sides of all the ramps and platforms. PROJECT BACKGROUND: The construction of weighbridges and a weigh cabin.The cabin will be elevated 1.5m above ground level on support columns.Lorries will drive up to the cabin for initial checks before the weighbridges are used to calculate the load by weighing the lorry when empty and when loaded.REQUIREMENT:A walkway around the cabin in a L shape with steps to allow the site operatives access. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:2D and 3D CAD drawings were created by our designer in-house. These were given to the client with their quotation.END RESULT: A Rapid Ramp platform was raised around 1.5 metres high and included steps. The appropriate height was reached with adjustable telescopic legs. REQUIREMENT: Replacing a worn-out wooden ramp with a compliant Rapid Ramp System.The system had to be strong enough to withstand impact from electrically operated wheelchairs, support users in the case of a fall and have handrails that confirm with BS 6180: 2011. Mono M310/M311 Glass InfillSt George’s junior school is an independent Roman Catholic school with a high standard of facilities. Construction of ‘The Ark’ provided a new early years teaching block, which includes modern classrooms, a dedicated IT suite, a new assembly room and outdoor learning areas. The two-storey building has a staircase at each end and Delta Balustrades’ Mono™ system was specified with powder-coated steel balusters and 11.5mm toughened and laminated glass infill panels. The Mono™ system handrails were provided in oak to offer a warmer finish in the primary school environment and each staircase features a dual handrail with one handrail mounted at a 600mm height for the children and the other in parallel at 900mm for the teachers. The Ark features an outdoor teaching area at first floor level with a balcony accessed from the internal classrooms. Once again, Delta Balustrades’ Mono™ system was specified with powder coated balusters to match the grey of the window casings. The 11.5mm toughened and laminated glass infill panels have no handrails but have been installed at a height of 1500mm to provide additional edge protection. A further small triangular balcony at the side of the building has been specified with the same system as the main first floor balcony. At ground level, the building features steps and ramps and a combination of Mono™ balusters and Orbis™ handrails with a Sigma stainless steel finish have been used to provide guarding, with 10mm toughened glass infill panels.Finally, the stone steps leading to the nursery classrooms were specified with an Orbis™ handrail.

Yeoman Shield were proud to supply Guardian Handrail, incorporating signage, to a pioneering scheme by Bradford Teaching Hospitals to provide a dementia friendly environment in their hospitals. The Horton Ward at ST Luke’s Hospital was transformed using a grant from the Prime Minister’s “Challenge on Dementia Fund”As part of the refurbishment, which involved the use of art, colour and signage to help dementia patients to navigate their way round the hospital, Yeoman Shield were approached by Bradford Teaching Hospital to supply a handrail that would also act as a directional guide.“We have worked with Yeoman Shield many times and when we gave Area Sales Manager, Steve Hawke, the brief for the refurbishment of The Horton Wing, Steve presented us with the Guardian Handrail that has the capacity to carry signage on the face of the rail which would ideal for this project.” Stated Project Manager, Shane Embleton.The Guardian Handrail, installed by Yeoman Shield’s directly employed fixing operatives, to corridors on level 1 & 2 of The Horton Wing, was supplied in a Dusty Grey colour with contrasting accessories in Mid Grey to highlight the corridor openings to doorways and lifts.Signage was incorporated flush to the face of the rail in White offering directional information to hospital visitors and patients.Ultra Corner Protection Angles were also fitted to vulnerable corners of walls to prevent damage which is easily caused by passing people, trolleys and equipment.“Not only did the Guardian Handrail lend itself perfectly to the environment the trust wanted to create but offered the obvious functionality of a hand/protection rail which will help to keep the newly refurbished corridors looking smart well into the future.” Concluded Shane Embleton.

BACKGROUND: The facility will open at the Eastgate Car Park as part of the Government strategy to improve localised access to coronavirus tests.REQUIREMENT: Fully compliant ramps and steps in double quick time to allow the site to open before the end of the week. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: A few hours after receiving the enquiry and measurements, CAD/technical drawings and a quotation were drawn up and sent to the client. END RESULT: The measurements were received Monday evening, and all components were picked and packed Tuesday morning and delivered to site for Wednesday morning.The systems were fitted by our installation team Wednesday, ready for use by Thursday at midday.We were true to our name, delivering the project rapidly in less than a week. The Ascent Aluminium Roof Access Steps were specified to meet the clients requirement to create a safe access route up & over the “saw-tooth” roof for maintenance personnel. In this instance the Ascent steps were specified for use with an adjacent MSA Latchways climb-latch fall protection system. If collective protection is required handrails can be supplied to one or both sides of the steps. The Ascent Aluminium steps were specified for this project by Eurosafe Solutions Ltd a specialist fall protection company who also installed steps. The Ascent Aluminium walkway steps are tested for use on the aluminium standing seam roof and are secured back to the roof sheet using a proprietary support clamp. The Ascent aluminium walkway is designed in accordance with BS EN 516:2006 Prefabricated accessories for roofing, BS 4592, Industrial Type Flooring and stair treads, BS EN ISO 14122-3 Stairs, stepladders and Guardrail, BS 7976-2:2002+A1:2013 Pendulum slip resistance. It consists of 300 rooms as well as business and meeting facilities. The building is directly connected to Heathrow’s Terminal 4 via an air bridge and also offers convenient access to the London Underground, Heathrow Express train service and nearby major motorway routes. We were instructed to supply and install more than 600 metres of balustrades, as well as over 300 metres of wall fixed handrails during the hotel’s construction phase. The balustrades used for the project were 1.5kn structural glass balustrades to bridges and 0.74kN loading stainless steel with glass balustrade to stairs. We provided approximately 300 metres of structural glass balustrades to the hotel’s link bridges. At the design stage of the project, we were advised that the bridges could deflect by 25mm, so our balustrade design had to accommodate this. The solution was simple but very effective – we left a 5mm gap in between each five-metre length of track, which was not noticeable when walking along the bridges but allowed for adequate movement in the structure with no damage to the balustrades or the finishes, and no compromise to the overall look. In addition, we adapted our handrail system to provide protection to the walls where guests wheel trollies and luggage into the hotel. By fixing handrails along the flooring close to the walls, it provided a functional yet attractive solution to avoid any marks or scratches that luggage might create.The overall result was a mix of balustrades to the hotel’s stairs and link bridges, plus handrail finishes to the high-traffic areas of the premises that all fit in with the building’s modern and clean design.

PROJECT BACKGROUND:As pressure continues to build on the UK’s health service, Conquest Hospital's Emergency Department urgently needed to transform their current staff welfare area with additional space, achievable with a modular extension.The design included a canteen space, toilets, shower rooms, storage areas and lockers for NHS staff.REQUIREMENT:External developments included an accompanying ramp to overcome the exterior door threshold. BACKGROUND: Oxburgh Hall is a moated mansion set within 70 acres of formal gardens and woodlands.A £6 million improvement project was underway at the site, with works including repairing the roof, windows, chimneys, and medieval gatehouse.REQUIREMENT: As part of enhancements, a fully compliant ramp was needed from the south entrance and chapel to improve wheelchair accessibility. SITE SURVEY:Oxburgh Hall was the first project to benefit from the Lidar scanning technology used by our site surveyors.The machine scans the whole area, including the building and terrain.Once the photographing process was completed, our CAD designer was able to plot a 3D visual of the ramp on top of the lidar model.The final CAD designs were given to the client with their quotation.The lidar modelling process helps contextualise the drawings by placing the systems in a virtual representation of the real environment; in this example, a historic setting with grass & dry terrain.We aim to carry out site surveys efficiently and within a minimal time frame.
