Schiedel Chimney Systems

The first thoughts about safety at work are always about physical injury prevention as well as inhaling fumes, hazardous substances, etc. However, Occupational Noise, which is the amount of acoustic energy received by an employee of a company, can cause permanent damage if it is continuous. In the UK, The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005, came into effect for all industries from April 2008, which is quite late when you consider that the harm hearing loss can cause. Harm such as Tinnitus, which is the perception of noise in the ear or head, caused by a problem with the inner ear.The sustaining of high noise levels can also mask warning signals, prevent concentration and vital communication. Most authorities around the world have agreed that noise becomes dangerous when it’s higher than 85 decibels during a typical 8-hour work shift. However, noises under 85 decibels can also cause issues with the general public who are in and around the working environment. An example below shows the different examples of noise levels in decibels – the definition of noise is sound that is unpleasant or causes disturbance.ReductionIf a noise can’t be reduced by engineering the equipment, then acoustic quieting is required. This is the process of dampening vibrations from machinery and systems such as flue systems. With the increasing demand for noise attenuation, the demand for noise reduction from flues and chimneys in marine and industrial situations mean that many companies have developed their own silencer programmes. These tend to be combined with flue systems to have a product range which is reducing sound at the design stage

First printed house with KEUCO IXMO fittings and accessories

First printed house with KEUCO IXMO fittings and accessories

KEUCO

The result of the first project of this type is a house with an organic, soft design - the furnishings minimalistic, high-quality and modern. The house consists of triple-shelled walls that are filled with insulating mass. With the help of a giant 3D printer, the concrete mass was applied layer by layer. And within only a few months, a single-family house with 160 m² of living space was created.Nothing was to be missing from the house with its furnishings; the aim was to emphasise the high-quality and special style of the building. The concrete layers were to remain visible inside and out - reduced, clean and yet expressive in its style. This claim runs consistently through all rooms of the house. The bathrooms are equipped with KEUCO IXMO fittings in the shower and on the bathtub. The minimalistic fitting elements blend into the futuristic image, restrained yet strong in design. The shiny chrome finish, reflect a brilliant contrast to the dark tiles in the shower.Aligning with the principle of the house "without corners and edges", round cover plates were chosen for the fittings.  The accessories at the washbasin and WC also fulfil the credo of the design concept: EDITION 400 with its round form language is filigree and the accessories are high-quality eye-catchers. They enhance the bathroom with their understatement. What once started as a pilot project could influence building in the future and also offer installation and plumbing companies with completely new challenges. The materials and fittings of the bathrooms were chosen to match the special wall texture. "Without corners and edges", the EDITION 400 accessories from KEUCO perfectly fit to the motto, as does the KEUCO IXMO bath mixer with round cover plates. In addition to numerous accessories for the toilet and washbasin area, the EDITION 400 range also includes many hooks and towel rails. The accessories are very filigree in design and nicely round-off the bathroom design in a discrete and elegant way.  The IXMO fittings in the shower are not only outstanding in terms of design, but also from a technical point of view: the water quantity and temperature are regulated via the single-lever mixer. The shower holder integrates a diverter, where you can choose between a large overhead shower and a hand shower. Two in one: The KEUCO free-standing accessory for the toilet area is the flexible solution for a toilet paper holder and toilet brush set. Thanks to the large base plate, it is particularly stable.

Polyroof Products Ltd

KAL is a member of the Gowan Group, a family-owned holding company, directly controlling many successful trading companies as well as significant property holdings and financial investments in public and private companies in Ireland, Northern Ireland and the UK.The largest appliance distributors in Ireland, KAL rely on a 30,000 square foot designer showroom for unique kitchen and domestic appliances. Their showroom at Dublin’s Citywest is one of the largest of its kind in Europe showcasing all their kitchen and consumer appliance brands. The ChallengeAfter conducting a survey of the 1,000m2 roof, it was determined that the areas of the roof, specifically the office area, were in need of repair. Some areas of the original roof build-up were starting to leak and lap joints failing due to a poor install.Following the site survey and adhesion tests, a site-specific specification was produced for the client and contractor to overview once all parties were happy with the proposals. With some complex detailing work involved, a decision was made to overlay the existing roof build with Polyroof Protec System. The SolutionPolyroof’s Protec System, a hybrid polymer liquid system with extremely fast curing and installation times, was the chosen system of use for the project. Due to its fully cold-applied application, the works could be carried out during working hours, with little disruption to the office staff below and little working time lost for the client.IPRS Limited, an experienced roofing and panel repair contractor and Polyroof Approved Contractor, were chosen to undertake the work on the project. Firstly, before any work could begin, the original waterproofing of the office roof was pressure-washed and cleaned down. Once all initial preparation was completed, the Protec System application could begin. All areas requiring priming before the main system application were primed and allowed to cure. Any joints were sealed using taping mat and Protec Resin and allowed to cure. Once this preparation had been completed the main Polyroof Protec System, chosen in light grey by the client, was applied. The first coat was allowed to cure before the final coat was applied. Due the Protec System Rapid Cure technology, the finished roof could be walked on after just 30-60 minutes after applications. This allowed for large roof areas to be made fully waterproof within a matter of hours. After the inspection was completed, the client received Polyroof’s trusted Accredited System Guarantee.Taking away the challenges of flat roofing projects.Polyroof’s reputation has been built on the high level of technical support provided to clients before, during and after every contract. We like to work closely with our clients from the very beginning of a flat roofing project right through to completion and throughout the lifespan of the roof. Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London

CAT (Carpet Accessory Trims) Limited

Overview The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane is located in the City of Westminster and is the oldest theatre in London still in use. There have been four different theatres built on the site, the first of which opened its doors in 1663. The current theatre was designed by Benjamin Dean Wyatt and opened in its current format in 1812. The theatre, now owned and operated by Andrew Lloyd Webber's company LW Theatres, has just gone through an astonishing £60 million refurbishment, designed by architects Haworth Tompkins, which includes new bars, dressing rooms and even a new 16 person lift to grant easy access to upper levels! Installation Over the past 2 years, C.A.T. has worked closely with the client, the architects and the flooring contractors - to supply a range of solid brass flooring profiles and stair nosings throughout this iconic building. Hand-finished here in the UK, these Brass Nosings adorn the staircases within the theatre's auditorium and many of the original cantilevered staircases in the foyers and Royal Boxes. Alongside Loughton Contracts, C.A.T conducted multiple site visits, to measure and template the hundreds of steps across the theatre. These measurements were conveyed to our fabrication team, who worked extremely hard to bring the nosing’s to life and replicate the detail of the treads, to ensure the overall finish was first class. Last but by no means least, as you walk into the newly refurbished theatre foyer, you will be greeted by the stunning bespoke carpet by Alarwool, expertly finished by Loughton Contracts, with our 16mm solid brass rods, hand-turned by our factory and hand finished in antique brass, to match the nosings and trims throughout. Be sure to look up too, the atrium roof is simply stunning!

Heritage Open Gas Fireplace

Heritage Open Gas Fireplace

Kompozit'All UK

application area: domestic heatinguse type: gas fireplaceproject scope: reline leaking chimneys while maximising the flue sizeadded value: 25-year guarantee on liner, no need to fit and maintain chimney fansBackgroundTwo chimneys failed the smoke test in this heritage property located in Hertfordshire. The chimneys had to be lined to comply with fire safety regulations. Domestic chimneys often require a chimney fan after lining as traditional rigid liners restrict much of the original flue opening. Chimney fans can be expensive to fit and maintain. FuranFlex-25 linings use the maximum flue opening, which often means there's no need to fit a noisy fan.Statement of workThe had to line both chimneys and prevent further leaks before the gas fireplaces could be fitted. This was achieved using FuranFlex-25 RWV liners, which are rated for operating temperatures up to 450 degrees C. The liners were specially produced to fit the flue diameter and length, accommodating any flue bends. The soft FuranFlex liners tube are inflated using pressurised steam which will gently push the liners to extend into the chimney flue. Inflating with steam will also cause a chemical reaction which sets the material harder than steel. The finished liner is smooth, jointless and highly corrosion resistant. Thanks to the expert installation and strong product quality control, both liners are guaranteed to work for 25 years.

How to incorporate a fire or stove installation into a self-build project.

DRU Fires

How to incorporate a fire or stove installation into a self-build project.By Niall Deiraniya, UK general manager, DRU FiresAlways ask for the fireplace specification at the design stage. Modern gas fires and wood stoves require careful planning in order to work as part of the general home heating system.Gas, wood or other fuels?Decide which fuel type best suits your home. Modern gas fires have realistic flame pictures and are much more energy efficient than older models.Wood stoves and fires also have greatly improved energy efficiency due to Ecodesign regulations. The only downside is that there is much more work involved with buying and storing the wood and cleaning the stove after use. Both gas and wood have room sealed options. This means that no air from inside the home is used for combustion and all waste emissions are expelled outside, resulting in clean burning and high efficiency. Finally, sustainable fuels such as Bioethanol produce a very attractive flame picture, burn cleanly with no smell or emissions and are available in a large selection of design formats. Built-in or freestandingIf you are converting a house with an existing chimney, you may wish to retain the chimney, to incorporate a more modern fire. Conventional flue gas fires are designed to fit seamlessly into standard chimneys and require minimal building work. The chimney will almost certainly need sweeping before installation and the fire may require a chimney liner for essential safety. Most wood fires are also designed for chimney installation and make full use of the air circulation properties to provide visually attractive and energy efficient fires. You can either elect for a basic ‘insert’ fire, which matches the dimensions of a Class 1 chimney or a widescreen model, which will require some structural changes.Freestanding stoves are very popular, as they offer greater flexibility of location and provide dramatic room features. They are available in gas, wood or bioethanol and generally need a flue connection to an outside wall or through the roof. No chimney optionsContemporary balanced flue gas fires are designed to be installed without a chimney, so you can incorporate them almost anywhere in a self-build project. However, they still need to be specified at the earliest possible stage. A typical installation will require the fire to be flued through an outside wall, with the flue concealed behind a false chimneybreast. Fires can be located in room-dividing walls and other architectural features so they can be seen from both sides. You can also enjoy fires in kitchens, bedrooms, loft conversions and many other places. These types of installations are made possible by extended, fan-assisted balanced flue systems. They allow for multiple fires to be placed in larger properties, with the flues hidden in crawl spaces and other discreet areas, terminating on the roof.In conclusion, the secret to having attractive and energy efficient fires and stoves in any self-build project is design, plan, cost and implement. And always consult a fully qualified Gas Safe or HETAS engineer. For further information visit www.drufire.com

application area: commercial gas heatinguse type: condensing gas boilersproject scope: line commercial freestanding chimney for condensing operationadded value: corrosion-resistant, air-tight and waterproof finishBackgroundThe combustion gases from the school's boiler room are exhausted through a freestanding 28-metre brick chimney. The structure was not suitable for the wet operation of condensing boilers. FuranFlex-25 Black was the chosen lining material. The new boiler plant required a 500mm diameter flue liner but the chimney could not accommodate a rigid liner this size. A FuranFlex25 Black liner was therefore specified as it expands into the rectangular flue shape when inflated with steam.Statement of workFuranFlex25 comes as a folded and soft tube. Inflating with steam irreversably hardens the liner fixing it in place. Within a few hours of steaming the liner was ready for connecting to the boilers. The appropriate adaptors/terminals were fitted making the chimney ready for operation.

From each room the flues were lined with VentilFlex-25 Green up to the attic level and out the top of the chimney. The team had to carry out a precision job in a confined space with minimal access to the duct.Statement of workVentilFlex-25 Green was chosen for this project because of its versatility and its long life span. The liner is light and comes as a soft and folded tube, which makes it easy to transport and to lower into the ventilation duct. Once in position, the liner is inflated and heated up, gradually assuming and maximising the internal dimensions of the existing ventilation duct. application area: commercial heatinguse type: industrial condensing boilersproject scope: preserve rectangular flue shape and maintain lined diameteradded value: quick and efficient installation with minimal downtime and disruption to the building structureBackgroundTwo new high efficiency condensing boilers fitted into the basement of a nine-story office block (Dublin Civic Offices, Ireland) using two separate brick lined chimneys that rose through the nine floors and exited on the rooftop. The brick chimneys posed a problem as the chambers measered 300mm x 450mm no standard 350mm flue liner would fit. Due to the pliability of Furnflex, the liner was able to take up an oval shape in the chamber giving it the full 350mm required. This building is an extremely busy high-profile office block therefore minimum disruption to day to day business was required.Statement of workFollowing an onsite survey, Furanflex was deemed the ideal solution to line both chimneys. The installations were carried out over two weekends, one for each chimney, with no disruption to the office operations. The project completed on time and within budget.

application area: heritageuse type: wood fireplace in country mansionproject scope: restore georgian fireplaces, keep large fireplace openingadded value: non-destructive solution, ideal for heritage buildings BackgroundThe 18th Century Georgian Country House is a Grade 1 listed building and also English Heritage. The owners of the Derbyshire home wanted to use the original antique fireplaces with the existing large openings. The pargetting in the chimneys had fallen away and the mortar joints were leaking into different parts of the building. Lining with stainless steel liners was not feasible here as it would have compromised the cross sectional area of the chimney and the fireplace opening would have had to be closed down considerably.Due to the protected status of the building extra caution had to be exercised to minimise the effects of the works carried out to the interior of the building.Statement of workThe installation was quick and it did not impact the structure of the building. 4x Furanflex RWV liners were installed, each was finished within a day’s work, making it possible to use the period fireplaces once again. The most important requirement was to keep the current chimney sizes the same. This was made possible by FuranFlex25, which was inflated inside the chimney flue to expand into the available space, maximising the lined flue size.
