St. Clement Heights - Apex Lintel

IG Lintels

Crest Nicholson is an established developer of sustainable communities, dedicated to both design and innovation. St Clement’s Heights is part of a private housing and supported living project at Sydenham Hill. The development’s collection of 26 apartments and 20 townhouses exhibit impressive architectural elements.Situated at one of the highest points in London, Crest Nicholson incorporated balcony openings into the townhouse design. IG Lintels designed and manufactured a number of large apex lintels to accommodate impressive glazed openings, which provide access to the private balcony.Challenge:The large glazed apex openings provide a rich source of natural light to the second floor master bedrooms helping to create a bright and comfortable living space. The 4048mm openings accommodated glazed sliding doors leading out onto the balcony, where residents can enjoy beautiful views across the city landscape in the distance.IG’s engineers designed a bespoke steel lintel solution to achieve unique architectural features. The Sydenham Hill development required three heavy duty special lintels to accommodate the scale of the second floor openings.Solution:IG designed a bespoke lintel solution to suit the 4048mm span opening and replicated it for each of the three identical openings featured throughout the second floor of the development. The galvanised steel lintel solution accommodated the 2024mm high apex detail, considering the location of the ridge beam to avoid any clash. The end bearings of the lintel were increased to 225mm to help better distribute the loading applied. Additionally, the design incorporated a stiffening plate on the inner leaf to further ensure the structural integrity of the lintel once built-in.

One Hyde Park

One Hyde Park

SuperFoil Insulation

One Hyde Park, owned by CPC Group, is a high-end residential and retail park. Due to the nature and standard of the construction, developers required the highest quality tools, equipment and materials to construct the building. The ambition was to keep the design lines sleek, elegant and spacious, while still achieving the required high thermal performance expected in in a modern prestigious development in the heart of London. Insulating the floors introduced another level of complexity and so the search for something that was up to the challenge began. After meeting with developers, our experts concluded that SuperFOIL SFUF would be the most practical and efficient solution to the project. With a slim profile of just 6mm and R value of 0.8, SFUF gives a great solution where floor depths are limited. SFUF has a slightly different build-up to our typical roof / wall products in that it doesn’t include layers of wadding, this makes it much slimmer and less compressible, making it an ideal combination for solid floor applications. Unlike our other products, SFUF is also typically installed with no air gaps which, again, contributes to its slim profile. The top layer of SFUF is a polythene membrane which provides protection allowing it to be screeded onto directly with no need for additional layers to be installed. This also makes SFUF ideal for use with underfloor heating systems. The application of SuperFOIL SFUF was a success and the building was finished in 2010. Starting at £20million, One Hyde Park residential properties began selling soon after the completion of the complex. SuperFOIL SFUF provided a solution to achieve a high level of thermal performance in this prestigious development. SFUF has an impressive thermal r-value achieving excellent performance in a minimal amount of space

Decorette Woonatelier - F. Ball delivers win-win for Decorette Woonatelier

Ball, F and Co Ltd

Stopgap 600 Base deep section base compound and Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS adhesive were amongst products from F. Ball used to install floorcoverings in the new premises of the Echt franchise of the Dutch home deco retailer Decorette.Work was undertaken by Decorette Woonatelier Schuyt in Vught, as part of an arrangement that will in turn see Decorette Woonatelier Echt install floorcoverings at the Vught location when it is refurbished later in the year. After installers began by removing old ceramic tiles and mechanically preparing the subfloor to remove adhesive residues, floor levels needed to be raised by 11mm.To do this, flooring contractors applied Stopgap 600 Base deep section compound at a thickness of 7mm. The product is suitable for applications at thicknesses between 5–50mm prior to being capped with a suitable F. Ball smoothing compound. Its fast-drying properties meant that this could take place just three hours later, allowing flooring contractors to return the next day to install floorcoverings.Pressure sensitive adhesives from F. Ball were then used to install PVC planks in a herringbone formation in the 200m2 area. Floorcoverings were adhered using Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS temperature tolerant adhesive in the areas near the showroom’s floor-to-ceiling windows, which had the potential to cause solar gain and, consequently, extreme temperatures and temperature fluctuations – this can cause floorcoverings to expand and contract significantly, leading to unsightly tenting and gapping at the edge of vinyl floorcoverings over time. Styccobond F46 was used to install vinyl planks in other areas. The pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive provides a high bond strength that increases as it is trafficked, as well as strong initial tack, to reduce the likelihood of tiles or planks moving around while working.Raymond Schuijt, franchise owner and installer at Decorette Schuyt, said: “We love using F. Ball adhesives and smoothing underlayments as they are top quality and very easy to work with. The range is well thought out and contains solutions for every situation you can imagine. I can always count on their technical support if I have any queries too. They’re only ever a phone call away and will gladly undertake site assessments to advise on the required subfloor preparation and floorcovering installation processes.”
