AAS supplied a unique design of Oak veneered absorbent rafts in the open areas of the new East South building at Bath University. The slotted rafts were hung on wire fixings and created a suspended ceiling effect whilst reducing the reverberation time. Working with the main contractor Bouygues and the architect’s Fielden Clegg Bradley to design this innovative solution to reducing the reverberation time in the large open areas and corridors incorporating all the lighting into the rafts.

In 2019/20 works were undertaken to prolong the life of the promenade structure and adjacent shoreline at Aberavon. The implementation of the Shoreline Management Plan has served to protect residential and commercial properties from coastal erosion. Geofabrics HPS11C is a thick needlepunched non-woven geotextile manufactured from 100% virgin polypropylene high tenacity fibres containing 1% active carbon black. The main function of HPS11C is to prevent loss of the sub-soil from below the rock armour. With challenging low particle size subsoils, the HPS11C was ideal with its combined filtration and permeability characteristics.

Improving accessibility has always been a recurring theme in the specification of Neaco’s products and so it proved again when the company’s balustrade systems were called into service for entrance ramps at Humberside Fire and Rescue Service’s new cutting-edge Hull Central Fire Station. Jefferson Sheard Architects sought to design an accessible and welcoming facility to serve the local community. Neaco’s contribution was integral to this objective with aluminium handrails and balustrade to steps and two extensive ramps at the main entrance. The system was also specified with glass infill panels for a first-floor terrace.

This was an interesting waterproofing operation designed and installed by the contracting staff at the BriggsAmasco branch in Glasgow,which solved a ten-year old ingress problem to the roof terrace entrance to the Anderson Building over the lecture theatres below. After extensive exploration, new falls were established, waterproofing was by a hot melt system followed by insulation, topped by a wearing service of decorative paving slabs.

AAS Projects & Design were appointed by Feltham Construction to design, survey and install all the acoustic timber panelling and solid timber panelling to the internal ceilings, walls and external colonnade. Digital surveying was carried out by AAS within the two main halls, ensuring millimetre precision as each and every diamond aperture required measuring. The jewel in the crown are the two striking vaulted ceilings, both lined with diamond shaped acoustic solid oak slatted panels. Each diamond shaped panel fitted between the glulam beam roof structure. Further timber slatted panelling was installed to the new sixth form centre ceiling and walls.

The new addition of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (MFAH) boasts an unusual treasure – natural light. Daylight is dynamic and can change the brightness and color of art, making artificial lighting a frequent choice of museums. This is why cultural arts buildings tend to be devoid of glass walls and windows. But Stephen Holl Architects, who designed the new addition, had a distinctly different idea. Using an ingenious system of laminated, translucent glass tubes on the outside walls of the buildings, they found a way to control the light coming in, while protecting the priceless classical art inside. Punched openings in the weather wall are opaque and offer a different experience of light behind the glass tubes. Daylight also flows in from clerestory glazing, making the experience of visiting a naturally lit museum completely unique. At night, the glass tubes glow with a soft artificial light, creating a luminous streetscape.The museum was extended by new two building complexes, now called the Kinder Building. With the placement of the museum in the heart of Houston's Museum District — surrounded by iconic buildings, including Mies van der Rohe's existing Museum building — the design had to be a showpiece.Working collaboratively with Holl Architects and façade specialists Josef Gartner, German glass façade experts Knippers Helbig began work on creating the glass tubes. The design called for a "cool jacket facade" — a ventilated facade structure consisting of approximately 1,150 translucent glass tubes with a length of up to 6.50m. Almost the entire building is wrapped with translucent glass tubes, which are located in front of opaque walls and large punched windows. A steel substructure with an invisible structural glazing connection supports the tubes.The glass tubes have an acid-etched surface on the outside with four translucent Vanceva® Arctic Snow PVB interlayers, which precisely control the amount of daylight passing through them. The success of this project relied heavily on the meticulous selection of materials and forms, as well as through countless daylight simulations and mock-ups. During the Construction Documents Phase, a full-scale mockup was built to measure daylight transmission. Over several months, temperatures were measured on the tubes with the results used in detailed thermal and structural analysis.The tight bending radius of the glass tubes meant that they could only be produced with gravitational bending. A series of tests were performed to ensure the load-bearing capacity of the glass. In addition to the architectural and daylight-control functions, the Vanceva PVB interlayers in the glass tubes also significantly contribute to the reduction of the energy transmission and the associated cooling loads. The PVB interlayers provide a high degree of safety. If a portion of the wall would be impacted, the glass would stay intact. “With translucent interlayers, the desired light transmission can be precisely fine-tuned to what was essential on this museum project,” according to Roman Schieber, Associate Director at Knippers Helbig, who led the glass façade portion project. “Unlike clear glass, translucent glass is visible and results in a totally different and fascinating perception of the space.”Such a rare combination of natural light and fine art is already highly anticipated in the arts world. The Rich and Nancy Kinder Building is expected to open in the fall of 2020.

Bolton Gate’s Superior folding shutters have been specified and used on over 100 Fire Stations in Hong Kong & Macau, the latest being the station built to service the infrastructure associated with the new Hong Kong–Zhuhai-Macau bridge, the longest sea-bridge in the world. The doors are designed to meet an onerous specification including typhoon loads up to 3kPa and fast operating speeds (approximately 700mm per second). They are designed and manufactured in the UK and shipped to Hong Kong where they are installed by Deacon & Co., Bolton Gate’s local agent.

Jade Windows has completed a large project at Castleford Academy which saw the establishment self-fund a two phase refurbishment of windows, doors and a fully glazed corridor. With over 1200 students attending Castleford Academy the need for refurbishment was apparent as Ryan Fozzard, estimating manager at Jade Windows explained: “For students to perform well academically their environment needs to be comfortable and inspiring. The original school was built in 1906 and despite the addition of a sports hall and drama studio, the building had become tired and desperately needed an overhaul.”

The contractor was relaying a waterproof membrane immediately above the London Aquarium and naturally the client was concerned about leaks with such precious livestock beneath. The waterproofing was torch-on bituminous felt membrane, due to be covered with road grade asphalt. Protecto-board was laid onto the waterproofing and secured with tape. It was cut to shape around the curbs cleanly and effectively without leaving vulnerable areas and without delaminating or crumbling, or leaching bitumen. It protected the waterproofing from temporary construction process damage and permanently protected it when covered with hot road grade asphalt afterwards

The Joseph Black Building, found in the King’s Buildings Campus at the University of Edinburgh, houses the School of Chemistry and is one of the oldest buildings on the campus. But its existing copper roof covering had come to the end of its natural life. Sika Sarnafil’s flagship Sarnafil Plus refurbishment offer was the perfect solution for this project. Sika Sarnafil Membrane S327-15EL in Patina Green was chosen to replace the old roof covering, as the local authority planning department advised that this product was an acceptable replacement for the original copper roofs on the listed building.

Oscar Acoustics achieved a 90-minute fire rating at BRE Group’s testing facility for its Iso-Mount Type1 acoustic ceiling hanger. Iso-Mount Type1 significantly reduces transmission of noise from the floor above with minimum ceiling height loss. The mount was tested to BS EN 1365-2:2014 Fire Resistance Tests for Loadbearing Elements at BRE Group’s laboratory in Watford in December 2018. Iso-Mount Type1 can be specified for projects ranging from house conversion to flats, both new build and renovation, as well as shops, restaurants and other commercial soundproofing applications.

The massive scale of the project meant up to 80 plumbers and fittings were installing Yorkshire integral solder ring products at any one time.

This 115m² project was a large luxury new-build. The decking required two distinct build-up methods around the house. One section was on a waterproofing membrane, the other on a steel framed walkway. Adjustable support pedestals were loose-laid onto the membrane. iDecking aluminium rail system was set onto the pedestals and EasyClick boards were clicked into place. Pedestals lifted the decking structure off the membrane allowing free drainage and creating a level surface on the falling roof. Aluminium rails were mechanically fixed to the steel structure and the whole terrace was set to one, seamless level wrapping around the house.

The project involved the conversion of the 1st floor of the Grade II listed Princes Building in Newcastle’s Quay side area into 10 apartments. The building, which was designed by William Parnel, who was responsible for some of the best architecture in the City, was built back in 1863 and as such posed some interesting problems when it came to bringing the building up to current standards. The introduction of the Lewis Dovetailed Metal Deck and screed system on top of the existing joists provided the necessary performance for airborne and impact sound and fire separation.

The mailboxes used in the project were produced using our high-quality Stainless Steel material with a 316L grade finish. The banks of mailboxes are divided between wall mounted and freestanding installation, providing a solution for a project where the available space is limited. The banks of freestanding mailboxes were mounted upon a support frame custom designed for the project to provide a secure and stable base for the banks.

AAS Ltd were employed by Kingston Joinery Contractors to supply 1300 sq/m of White Beech Plywood Panelling to the Main Sports Hall. The panelling design comprised of solid panels together with slotted/drilled panels. The perforated panelling is designed to provide sound absorption to the sports hall and also to provide an aesthetic back drop. In certain areas, perforated panels are not used in the traditional sense of providing sound absorption, but, kept open to allow light through into the sports hall from the glass façade behind.

Design consultants AECOM delivered efficient hot water distribution using 800m of RAYCHEM HWAT-M self-regulating cables, to provide a single-pipe system throughout the building. Its compact design, eliminated the need for recirculation pipes, thus enabling the system to be installed in restricted spaces. Pipe freeze protection was achieved using 300m of RAYCHEM WinterGard self-regulating cables. Snow and ice prevention on the car park access ramp was provided by 1200 metres of RAYCHEM EM2-XR selfregulating cable controlled by a VIA-DU-20 multi-sensor control unit.

Protecting against flames, smoke and radiant heat, the selected glazing range has the advantage of providing Marr College with additional radiant heat control and greater fire protection. In tests this glass demonstrates the ability to maintain the amount of radiant heat to below 15 kW/m2 on the unexposed face, protecting critical evacuation routes for occupants.
