Modern gas fires and wood stoves require careful planning in order to work as part of the general home heating system.Gas, wood or other fuels?Decide which fuel type best suits your home. Modern gas fires have realistic flame pictures and are much more energy efficient than older models.Wood stoves and fires also have greatly improved energy efficiency due to Ecodesign regulations. The only downside is that there is much more work involved with buying and storing the wood and cleaning the stove after use.Both gas and wood have room sealed options. This means that no air from inside the home is used for combustion and all waste emissions are expelled outside, resulting in clean burning and high efficiency.Finally, sustainable fuels such as Bioethanol produce a very attractive flame picture, burn cleanly with no smell or emissions and are available in a large selection of design formats. Built-in or freestandingIf you are converting a house with an existing chimney, you may wish to retain the chimney, to incorporate a more modern fire. Conventional flue gas fires are designed to fit seamlessly into standard chimneys and require minimal building work. The chimney will almost certainly need sweeping before installation and the fire may require a chimney liner for essential safety.Most wood fires are also designed for chimney installation and make full use of the air circulation properties to provide visually attractive and energy efficient fires. Jewers Doors has for many years supplied contour doors which are specially shaped to encompass the fuselage of an aircraft in order to provide an environmental seal. These doors allow part of an aircraft (e.g. the nose or tail) to be within the controlled environment of a hangar for maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) operations. With part (often the major part) of an aircraft remaining outside the hangar, space within the hangar is available for other aircraft to be worked upon – thus increasing productivity. Such an arrangement also means that MRO operations can be undertaken on larger Code E and F aircraft in hangars that would otherwise be too small.

Bioethanol fires require no chimney or flue, give off no harmful emissions and are 95% energy efficient. They are available in a large selection of designs for living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms and gardens. As the leading manufacturer of fire and smoke curtains, Coopers were appointed to develop a smoke curtain system to provide an unintrusive method capable of controlling smoke migrating from the lower floors. It was also necessary to protect the un-insulated glazing installed above the atrium’s reception area with an approved fire curtain barrier system approved to provide a one hour insulating zone. Coopers manufactured, installed and commissioned two SmokeStop smoke curtains developed to control smoke generated in the event of fire and effectively channel it away from occupants during evacuation.

For all the patient and treatment rooms, Planet Partitioning used p20 demountable glass partitioning with Eclipse sliding doors. FireStop partitioning ensured that lift lobby partitioning has a fire integrity and insulation rating of EI120/120. Doors for the lift lobby are fire rated for EI 60/60 and steel framed.

Over 300 Optima casement windows and 60 doors from Profile 22 were used in a new 85-bed care home and 45 assisted living apartments in Sutton Coldfield. Background The Sutton Rose development in Boldmere, Sutton Coldfield is a new build 85-bed care home with 45 assisted living apartments. The developer is renowned for delivering exceptional quality projects, which means suppliers have to meet exacting standards and quality specifications. The window and door contract were awarded to Sutton Designs in Kingstanding, Birmingham, with manufacturing undertaken by Profile 22’s Approved Commercial Manufacturer, Central Window Systems in West Bromwich. The two companies had worked on previous care projects, which meant that as well as being able to demonstrate their ability to meet the tender requirements for this project they also brought a proven track record. The window specification The window and door system specified for the project was award-winning Optima from Profile 22, a fully-integrated 70mm system which offers a step-change in advanced window design. The high-specification system comes with an impressive set of credentials and design flexibility to meet all commercial project requirements. In this project, all windows were fitted with open-out restrictors for the safety or the residents and all window and doors needed to comply with fire and smoke escape protection measures. Optima offers market-leading structural strength and high-security features and casement windows are PAS24:2016 approved as standard which was important to meet the project specification. The windows and doors were manufactured in Anthracite Grey on White to match other developments in building contractor’s portfolio and create a sleek, modern aluminium aesthetic. A carefully managed installation process Sutton Designs is an experienced new build and commercial window installation company and has worked with Central Window Systems for over three years. The two companies worked in close partnership to ensure all windows and doors were manufactured and installed to the required timescales. The project was completed during the Covid-19 pandemic, which meant appropriate health and safety considerations also needed to be taken into account. The Coopers FireMaster, closed and open Concertina fire curtain is a perfect solution when requiring fire compartmentation around a staircase as it offers a virtual firewall creating a lobby, once the curtain has been deployed, with more than 3 hours integrity. A total of five FireMaster Concertinas were installed between floors 11 and 15 in this large office space. These curtains allow for the open plan flow of the building to remain as intended and prevent the spread of fire through the building whilst providing compartmentation.

TS.11204 Cam Action Door CloserThe 153-bedroom Village Hotel is a recent addition to the growing Village Hotels chain. As its fitting out neared completion, we were contacted by our client, who reported a problem with the doors not being held fully shut by the closers. This would obviously be a fire safety issue and, with 307 doors to fit, was a challenge that needed to be overcome quickly.Rutland personnel visited the site to diagnose the cause and found that the door architraves were deeper than normal. This extra depth reduced the pre-tension capacity of the closer to hold the door shut.The solution identified was to increase the angle of the closer arm when the doors were closed from five to ten degrees. Back at Rutland headquarters, this design modification was quickly made to the TS.11204 closer and the revised versions supplied.They worked perfectly, thereby enabling the hotel to keep the desired door closer specification and know that all its doors were fully fire safety compliant.

Coopers Fire installed a large, multi-faceted FireMaster Concertina Closed fire curtain on floor 12. The client utilising floors 12 and 13 wanted to keep an open plan feel between floors to allow a more free flowing environment for the staff. To achieve this, a bespoke staircase was designed connecting the floors. The spiral staircase was a major feature on floor 12 and meant that staff were able to move freely between floors 12 and 13 without using the lifts.

Barry Fire Station / Altro case study

Doors in underground stations not only have to meet fire protection, security and safety requirements, but in particular they have to be able to handle pressure. This was also one of the key requirements for the doors of the new Crossrail stations in London. Here, security doors were required that had to be fire, sound and pressure resistant. Teckentrup was able to offer appropriate door solutions with corresponding conformity, which also complied with the revised, stricter version of LPS 1175 for proof of product certification. In addition, all required values for soft impact tests, structural strength data, „U“ values, cycle tests and life cycles could be met. This tipped the scales in favour of the German manufacturer when the project was awarded and, with the stations Whitechapel and Liverpool Street marked the start of a successful collaboration.

There are a total of 30 active SmokeStop smoke curtain barriers, 5 vertical FireMaster fire curtains and 2 FireMaster Concertina multi-faceted fire curtains installed within the university building offering protection from fire and smoke. With a large central atrium in the centre of the building, smoke control was a huge necessity on this project and therefore various bespoke engineered solutions were required to help solve the smoke and fire requirements.

Ongoing replacement of old doorsThe challenge Hart were consulted to help reduce vermin access mainly from pigeons, seagulls and geese attracted by the feed/agricultural nature of the production process. The doors needed to be capable of thousands of operations in dusty conditions allowing large vehicles fast access to the facilities. The solution With over 30 Hart doors installed across six production facilities, the latest contract replaced existing roller shutters, which remain open all day, with seven Speedor Storms, one Speedor Super and one fast action roller shutter. In September 2022, Bradbury Group installed eight ClassicAL doors at a low-rise block of flats for Central Bedfordshire Council.The replacement doors installed were a combination of Front Entrance and Rear entrance doors, providing fire integrity and security protection to the communal housing, as well as Network Communication Systems Limited, NCS, Chorus remote access management. DRU has installed 89 gas fires into Ebury Square, a development of luxury 1-4 bedroom apartments and 5 bedroom penthouses by Berkeley Homes in Belgravia, London. The fires were selected for their contemporary design, easy installation and high energy efficiency. They consist of single-sided and double-sided tunnel models. Berkeley Homes selected DRU because of their unique PowerVent® flue system. Due to the configuration of the apartments, the flues had to be extended up to 64 metres throughout the service ducts in the complex, with most of the fires having external PowerVent® terminals on the roof.
