The Waterside Park project features multiple banks of a fire rated mailboxes that comply with the BS 476 Part 22 offering a one hour integrity rating that will ‘contain and form a break to a fire’. The mailboxes feature an inward sprung flap, which is a standard feature across the Fire Rated mailbox range. An intumescent strip is placed on the internal side of the mail flap, which expands when the temperature increases and ensures that the flap is kept closed – stopping the oxygen flow into the mailbox and reducing the risk of fire spreading through the mailbox.

A stunning ‘roundhouse’ curved garage door, built as part of a project to renovate and extend a Grade II listed property, provides a new perspective on the design, purpose and visual appeal of an exceptional British garage. The project at the large family home in Surrey encompassed internal alterations, restoration of a five metre high bay window to the main house and the creation of a four bay garage. The garage’s purpose, usage and desired appearance meant fusing traditional design with contemporary solutions, with Rundum Meir tailor-made garage doors being key to delivering on the architects’ vision.

Millworks worked with Devlin Architects to deliver a mix of factory finished painted, fire protected and natural weathered Thermowood (Redwood) cladding. Thermowood was chosen due to the stability and ability to take a consistent painted finish, giving a longer service life. Vacuum coating gives the timber a consistent finish on all four sides. Following the building expansion of more than 47,000 m2 the grade-II listed Stanford Hall Estate facility required further fire protection measures to be installed in order to reset its resistance to fire. The combination of these products ensures the fire safety of the building.

The three leaf hatch – which measures 6 x 3 metres – can take up to 5kN/m² loading. It has an electric actuator opening which can be activated remotely and is fire rated for up to two hours. Detailed in the new 2019 SYSTEMGLAS® Specifiers Guide, the new options supplement an already expansive product range of fire-resistant glazing screens offering protection of between 30 and 120 minutes. The range’s four systems provide framing options in steel, timber and two which utilise the fire-resistant calcium silicate PROMATECT® H to allow for over-cladding or concealment for a virtually ‘frameless’ effect.

Built on the site of the former East London Bus Garage, The Forge creates 192 residential apartments clustered around communal courtyards. Working alongside installer Ravenworth, a two-million pound systems package of 1,000 aluminium windows, 170 aluminium patio doors and 20 aluminium commercial doors were provided to this project. The light buff buildings range from three to five storeys with a contrasting white brick 14-storey focal building. This forms the gateway to the development together with a row of interestingly designed townhouses. Each block displays frequent openings with contrasting areas of glazing and cladding, softened with balconies.

Injecting present-day performance into an historic passenger lift whilst conserving its yesteryear veneer – updating access in the transformation of the Grade II-listed, YMCA’s The Bristol Wing. The site dates back to the 13th century and boasts a colourful history that includes being home to a prison, the Chief Constable, the Invisible Circus theatre troupe, a group of artists, crown courts and a fire station. The original New York-style passenger lift was around 80 years old and operated within a traditional cage structure rising through the central stairwell of the building to serve five floors.

ROCKFON ceiling systems were selected for Skibbereen because they either met or exceeded the acoustic requirements specified by the Department of Education. Fire safety was also an important factor and ROCKFON products provide Class A1 fire resistance, the safest fire classification.

Premium materials were utilised throughout, including laser-cut acrylic with embedded LEDs, aperture-cut metal trays with push-through lettering, scratch-resistant, Lintec opti-clear manifestation film, Digimura supergraphics a digitally printed wallcovering, fire rated to EN13501 and compliant to EN15102, internally-illuminated LED light sheets.

A leading UK water company refurbished its headquarters in Warrington, which included a full office fit-out and building a staff gymnasium. The project utilised glass in the new gym as light transmission was a priority. Arkoni, a fabricator based in West Yorkshire worked with Pyroguard to deliver a clean cut glass screen without the unsightly black edges often found on other fire glass screens. The glass chosen for the gym was the EI30 INT fire glass in a butt joint format, offering the clean almost invisible joints similar to standard non fire rated screens.

CRASH Chief Executive, Francesca Roberts contacted Selectaglaze asking if they would be willing to donate secondary glazing for the computer suite at Caritas Anchor House. Selectaglaze was happy to contribute and involved Pilkington with them donating the fire-resistant glass to support the installation. Three Series 40 units with 10mm Pyrodur fire-rated glass were installed, which has a beaded fixed frame system offering 30 minute fire integrity protection.

This innovative solution has met the most demanding requirements for a fire-rated glass floor and skylight to date; 2-hour fire rating, blast, and seismic resistance, plus live loading for foot traffic. It involves horizontal fire-rated glass, structural glass, and spacers with air-gaps to avoid replacing glass due to dirt and condensation issues that would develop with foot traffic and the outdoor environment.

No.1 Forbury Place in Reading, UK, is the largest butt-jointed fire-rated glazing construction in Europe and features Vetrotech's oversize fire-resistant glass, Contraflam Mega. The project comprises more than 1,400 m2 of Vetrotech’s EI30 fire resistant glazing solution: Contraflam. On the ground floor of the 8-story atrium Contraflam Mega single panes are installed with heights of 4.5 m and weights up to almost 0.5 t. The 4-sided vitreous atrium from the first to the seventh floor has been fully equipped with Vetrotech’s Contraflam Structure flush glazing solution.

Signbox worked closely with Expedia's appointed architects, EDGE Architecture + Design, to manufacture and install a tailor-made signage package for their UK headquarters; including branding signage, wayfinding, large format digital wallpaper, extensive manifestation applications and a feature ‘postcard’ wall, for the reception area. All the signage was bespoke, with materials manufactured in-house, predominantly using the Durst Omega 1 UV inkjet printer, which can print to a resolution of 1728dpi at fine art quality. Environmental graphics utilised fire rated Digimura wall covering, digitally printed on HP Latex with glazing manifestations printed on an optically clear polyester film with white ink.

Our assessment criteria included - appearance, sustainability, acoustic class, fire resistance, combustibility, weight, installation angle and curved edge profiles. Rockfon® Mono® Acoustic was our final recommendation and main contractor selection based on the ability to install as a multi-gang operation, thereby gaining significant programme benefits. The appearance of the installation fully achieved the original design vision”.

The challenge of transforming a 100-year-old school building in to upmarket residential homes is no mean feat – but that is exactly the task that one building firm has undertaken and the outstanding results puts them top of the class. Using a range of Liniar products, including windows, doors, roofline and a lantern roof the results are fantastic. The old Shirland Primary School, near Higham in Derbyshire, became available to buy after the school was relocated to a new building in 2011 and Linden Design & Build Ltd purchased it, with planning permission, in June 2014.

Part of Birmingham City University, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire is a £57 million teaching and performance facility. Delivering contemporary access solutions to this significant new development, TORMAX was contracted to install prestigious automatic revolving doors to the two main entrances as well as an automatic swing pass door and set of sliding doors. Working with main contractor Galliford Try, TORMAX created an elegant lobby by positioning a set of automatic sliding doors between the three-wing revolving door and main foyer. To one side of the revolving door is located an automatic swing door, offering an alternative for less able users.

Tegola's black asphalt shingles look like slates and a special kiln firing process ensure a fade free appearance. Tegola only weight 10.5 kgs/sq.m., a quarter of the weight of concrete tiles, and this produced economies in the support structure, and their economic price led to significant cost savings. Tegola shingles have an excellent life span as they are stronger than the British Standard requirements, and have a design life of 35 years and have a top fire rating.
