An architectural marvel located in an area of the capital rich with history.In the centre of one of the most famous cities in the world and a stone’s throw away from the prestigious St Paul’s Cathedral – the commercial entrance matting at Newgate Street had to be as eye-catching as the location it sits in. We were specified early on for this project – working closely with SDS Matting who are familiar with our market-leading capabilities. For this design, incorporating the alternating narrow stone strips was a priority feature for the client – a challenge, but end results like this are always worth the effort.Two products, one Elite solutionThis creative execution called for a combination of two innovative products. For the revolving doors (where foot traffic is always heavily concentrated) INTRAflex XT with Elite fibre inserts was specified to deal with most of the dirt and moisture. As one of our most popular products, INTRAflex XT offers optimum durability, performance and aesthetics. For the strip style beyond the revolving doors, INTRAflex SP achieves the striking finished effect you can see in the photographs.The strips of INTRAflex SP are inset into the terrazzo tiles following the direction of travel. As most Entrance Matting Systems are set perpendicular to the direction of travel, this particular design was a great opportunity for SDS Matting to demonstrate their expertise. Laying the matting perfectly to line up with the entrance matting surrounding the revolving doors was one of the big success stories of this project.The INTRAlux Elite black fibre inserts used at Newgate Street contain a monofilament scraper element to remove dirt effectively and, in the classic black colourway, play into the colour scheme perfectly to complement the architect’s overall foyer design intent.Moving in a new directionQuality was a high priority for this project. As Entrance Matting specialists with a proven eye for design, we were specified early on by Buckley Gray Yeoman having worked closely with them before. The added element of laying the matting in the direction of travel called for a matting product that could be installed with ease. It welcomes over 500 employees each day through glazed revolving and accessible side doors.The sloped site means the entrance has steps and a wheelchair lift to the right of the doors, giving access to the security turnstiles on the raised ground floor. With multi-directional and wheeled traffic, SpaceInvader Design needed suitable office Entrance Matting to meet the challenge. INTRAshape fits the brief, fulfils BREEAM standards and delivers a unique, modern tessellation for an easy install across the lobby width.Striking Aesthetics Without the StressINTRAshape comes as individually tessellating tiles in a variety of sizes and shapes for infinite creative options – rectangle, square, hexagon, triangle, diamond. There are 22 colour and fibre combinations as well.The office entrance matting is an irregular polygon shape, approximately 8.5m wide x 4m deep. We provided detailed layout drawings based on the construction plans and the chosen herringbone pattern. We labelled every title with a co-ordinating reference and boxed them by type to make installation easier. It also helps that INTRAshape can be cut to shape without any specialist tools.High-quality, Sustainable and PracticalSpaceInvader Design chose INTRAlux Elite Grey 606 inserts, our high-quality 100% recycled practical Econyl – ticking those BREEAM boxes in this instance. As one of our most absorbent inserts, it can hold 5.4L per m2.With a combination of coarse and fine strands, it brushes off dirt and sucks in the moisture from shoes and tyres. It’s hard-wearing and has top fibre resistance and acoustic ratings so perfect for a busy office building.They also chose an anodised black finish for the recycled aluminium frames to complement the rest of the luxurious design scheme. Dr Gunther von Hagens’ renowned exhibition of real human bodies is the most successful travelling exhibition in the world. On display since 1995, it has attracted more than 47 million visitors in over 130 different cities across America, Africa, Asia and Europe. With its worldwide popularity and central London location, the venue expects significant annual footfall which means a robust entrance matting system is essential to maintain the safety and aesthetics of the reception. This dual product system removes excess dirt and moisture even before the first step into the building.

Gradus Esplanade Plus primary barrier matting was installed to the main entrance and Boulevard 5000HD secondary barrier carpet to all side entrances, both in colourway Jackdaw (black) helping to reduce tracked in dirt and moisture and reduce overall maintenance costs.

Located in Prescot, Merseyside, the new Shakespeare North Playhouse boasts a traditional, 470-seat timber theatre at its heart. The home of some of the great author and playwright’s earliest works. This prestigious building captures the soul of Elizabethan storytelling, drawing in modern audiences from across the country. Opened in 2022, the new theatre has played a ‘leading role’ in the ongoing regeneration of Knowsley. Carrying the weight of one of the all-time greatest wordsmiths, meant that every inch of the Shakespeare North Playhouse had to combine the upper echelons of modern design quality with the traditional soul of a 16th century theatre.Traditional feel, modern capabilityTasked with providing a powerful first impression to the entrance of this characterful building, our INTRAflow product in a brass anodised finish was a great choice for the Matting. In keeping with the bronze within the reception area, the brass anodised finish added an extra quality touch. The INTRAlux Elite fibre insert completed the warm, welcoming look achieved in the final outcome.The INTRAflow product is perfect for heavy footfall areas and so, just the ticket for audiences of nearly 500 people all coming and going at once.An important consideration was the traditional wooden seating areas within the theatre. It was essential that the Entrance Matting would remove dirt and moisture quickly and effectively to protect such a unique interior. The foyer area has no external overhang meaning very little protection from the elements. All combined, this meant a high-performance specification was required. The debris channel systems help ensure as much dirt as possible is removed on entry.Sustainability and designSustainable practices and materials were a must for the client. To truly bring this archaic theatre into the modern world, the project had to be completed with the planet at its heart. With such traditional materials being used for the interior, we made sure to use sustainable products, with 100% recycled aluminium.At INTRAsystems, we make all of our products as sustainably as possible. After all, Shakespeare built the Globe, so we want to protect ours.Ease of InstallationThe installation process being as simple as possible was a driving factor in the client’s decision to choose INTRAsystems. The building’s design needed a striking entrance mat stretch across the entire width of the entrance, which was a sizeable space, covering 30 m2 in total. Given there is a travellator that shoppers walk onto directly after passing over the Matting, avoiding high foot traffic carrying excess moisture onto the metal surface is essential to prevent slips. The 20 sq ft Mat Well was also located next to a trolley storage area. Because of this, the durability of our EPD certified INTRAlink² product a must. Waitrose had full faith in our product to supply exactly what they were looking for as a long-time corporate customer.Effectively Sustainable. Waitrose were keen to use the most sustainable products possible without compromising on functionality. Our INTRAlink² product was the obvious choice to cope with multi-directional traffic in a high footfall area. We created INTRAlink² with a 95% absorbent fibre surface coverage, making it hugely effective at removing dirt and absorbing moisture. Given its simplistic design, it’s incredibly easy to clean too! As a healthcare facility with vulnerable users, the specification called for revolving doors with maximum compartment space, without compromising on aspects such as durability, weather tightness and air permeability to support efficiency.Solution:  Our specification advisers put forward our 2-Wing UniTurn revolving door for the main entrance, which at 3.6m diameter and including centre sliding doors with emergency break out, was the best high capacity option to meet the entrance demands of space where wellbeing and comfort are paramount. Textured areas and high-contrast colours flow around the station concourse, signposting key routes, obstacles or points of interest to help visually impaired and disabled passengers navigate more easily.GWR had wanted to the carry the design through to the Entrance Matting too, adding a stripe of contrasting colour to link the entrance area with the onward concourse. The robust aluminium profile is ideal for heavy-duty applications too and comes with a 10-year warranty.The planks are easy to cut and install, provide flush transitions between outdoor and indoor flooring substrates to meet DDA regulations.Ensuring safety and efficient maintenance is of paramount importance on the railways so getting the right materials specification for each situation is vital. The installers could get a snug fit and adjust the planks incrementally to align accurately with the other textural and contrasting features in the flooring scheme.Elevating EntrancesThe Railway Entrance Matting now continues the signposting sections, linking up with the station flooring designs perfectly.Reactions and feedback from staff and passengers using the new station have been excellent.The Entrance Matting is already delivering on the objectives of keeping people safe, protecting the flooring beyond and providing key visual cues. 24-25 Grosvenor Street in Mayfair offers high-quality office space. Having been completely reconstructed behind its imposing double fronted period façade in the 1980’s, the building underwent a major back-to-frame refurbishment in 2018 to modernise the space. With two entrances to work with, the contractor needed a high-quality entrance matting system that would befit its location, whilst also providing superior performance from a relatively small area of matting. Two bespoke entrance designs were created to complement the aesthetics using INTRAdisc bronze capsules and INTRAform Double Module cut directly into the ceramic flooring.

'new beginnings' start with an impressive arrival sequence...Set between St. Paul’s Cathedral and The Old Bailey, 7 Newgate Street offers occupiers 75,000 sq ft of state-of-the-art contemporary office space following extensive refurbishment. An impressive reception, new 7th floor pavilion and communal roof terrace set the tone for the architectural detailing throughout the building. And, with a focus firmly on customer experience and environmental performance, the re-imagined building required a creative Entrance Matting product to match the overall design vision.High-spec design with beautiful curved features seen all around the lobby area needed the flexibility of INTRAflex Radial Entrance Matting to achieve the creative transition. As the only product on the market able to achieve such an aesthetic without compromising functionality, INTRAflex Radial was a fundamental inclusion for the project.Taking ShapeFrom revolving doors to curved glass covering the front entrance, achieving a matching, radial matting design was integral to the design’s success. Having originally requested a free sample to confirm INTRAflex Radial was the product the architects needed to achieve their vision, MORROW + LORRAINE specified our product having seen the quality, functionality and beauty of our product first hand. Opting for black INTRAlux Elite Fibre Inserts coupled with a black anodised finish – the dark colour scheme complements the interior of the newly refurbished building perfectly.Functionality was integral to the project and was integrated into the design. Although the revolving doors are the main entrances into the building, it was important to ensure that our creative Entrance Matting stretched beyond the width of the revolving doors to deal with the London foot traffic entering through the pass doors in order to protect against dirt and moisture. A commercial office space that Boasts 75,000 sq ft of space will obviously experience high levels of footfall, meaning the INTRAflex Radial was specified for its robust, heavy-duty performance as well as it’s flexible design capabilities.Building for the futureThe sustainable qualities of INTRAflex Radial were an essential consideration for this project. With a real focus on leaving as little an environmental impact as possible, the inclusion of the 100% recycled aluminium Entrance Matting and 100% Econyl fibre inserts helped the finished product to achieve Net Zero Carbon status. With our sustainably manufactured products also reducing environmental impacts in practice such as water usage due to less frequent cleaning, we’re proud to have been involved in such an ethically created, architecturally beautiful and truly creative space.

Gradus' Stratus carpet in Flint (grey) was installed in all of the school classrooms. Located in the commercial heart of Belfast, Donegall Place, formerly a bank building, has been part of the city landscape for over 50 years. The 5-storey building expands over 82000 square ft and is comprised of both office and retail space, part of which has been the home to Boots since the 70s.Project Year: 2021Architect: GM Design AssociatesProduct: ASSA ABLOY RD100-3 Wing Revolving doorProject Background: In 2017, the Architect obtained planning approval to extend and refurbish the building and upgrade lobby areas, shop fronts and facades including the main entrance. Looking to install an EN16005 compliant manual activated revolving door with integrated air curtain, the main contractor, Graham Construction, got in touch FAAC Entrance Solutions to submit their proposal for this project.Solution: FAAC presented the RD100 Revolving Door as the best product for this entrance, not only for representing a more cost-effective solution, but also by installing a power assisted automatic door rather than a manual one, made for a safer and more user-friendly entrance, thus providing better value overall. Ireland's newest major sporting venue, the inspiring Aviva Stadium, required a fittingly impressive entrance and exit zone aesthetic for its opening year. Accommodating up to 50,000 seated spectators meant issues of safety were key to the specification process, and the entrance flooring system chosen had to be the highest level functionally as well as aesthetically. An iconic feature of the South Bank skyline, Battersea Power Station has been transformed into London's most exciting shopping and Leisure destination. The legendary landmark now boasts shops, restaurants, cinemas, corporate offices and even residential apartments. For one of the most talked about projects in the UK in recent years, there was only one Entrance Matting manufacturer that would fit the bill in this prestigious London location. INTRAflex XT and INTRAflow were both specified across the various entrance ways within the Battersea Power Station complex.The complex has high footfall areas for the shopping centre and leisure areas, residential apartments and corporate offices. This meant the Entrance Matting had to be highly functional and durable without compromising on the stunning designs and finishes planned for this historic renovation.A historic renovationFor a £9bn project, the 8 million sq ft site is now home to a vibrant, mixed-use development for leisure, business and residential visitors and occupants to enjoy. For such an eagerly awaited project, INTRAflex XT was the obvious choice to provide the perfect first impression. Battersea Power Station has the capability to hold thousands of visitors at any one time. The Entrance Matting had to be able to withstand the heavy London foot traffic consistently.The main entrance way consists of large, open doorways exposing them to the elements during bad weather. So, durability was a real priority for this project. As a Grade II listed building, protecting the interior from dirt and moisture with our highly absorbent INTRAlux fibre inserts was another reason why our INTRA products were specified.More than meets the eyeThe aesthetic qualities of INTRAflex XT and INTRAflow were driving factors in the decision to specify our products. Refined and sophisticated, the bronze anodized finish brings a blend of industrial aesthetics with modern appeal that pairs perfectly with the Battersea Power Station interior and the project’s vision to create “a place that embraces our heritage, engages with our present and protects our future”.This meant that, of course, sustainability was of paramount importance. The long disused Battersea Power Station has been given new life to bring it into the modern age. Situated in the heart of the City of London, this high-profile installation combines INTRAform DM with a mix of ribbed rubber and INTRAlux Linear inserts, that works perfectly alongside the minimal white aesthetics of the lobby. By using INTRAform DM with a combination of inserts, the entrance matting effectively captures dirt and moisture to prevent its ingress into the sleek interior flooring beyond.

The building features nearly 2,000 m2 of bespoke gravity lay raised floor panels. These are manufactured by Bathgate Flooring in our UK manufacturing facility. They supplied panels with a real maple lacquered finish. The complete development sees 4 floors of fully accessible maple finished raised floors manufactured to the PSA MOB PF2 PS/SPU British Standard Bathgate Flooring under the Permaflor brand. The complete installation included a full aluminum entrance mat bought and installed by Paragon Mat–Works and the complete raised floor was installed to an extremely high standard by SJ Durman Flooring.

The transformation of the iconic old Marylebone Town Hall into a major new facility for the London Business School was taken on by Sheppard Robson Architects. Sammy Ofer Centre is a great educational institute now even so with better facilities for students to learn in. A building with such a heritage deserves the best entrance. This is further enhanced by the glass and steel structure that creates a clear distinction between the two building. Nestled between listed buildings in the heart of London with views over St Paul’s, this 108,000 sq ft cutting-edge office building was designed for maximum sustainability. Making an Entrance at London's leading net zero CAT A ProjectWithin London’s Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Holbein Gardens is a remarkable building just off Sloane Square that seeks to lead the way for companies seeking to achieving net-zero goals. Blenheim House Construction (BHC) helped realise Grosvenor’s vision to turn a tired old 1980s building into a net zero exemplar.A bare bones CAT A project, the site boasts quadruple environmental certification, including BREEAM Outstanding and WELL gold accreditation. Naturally, market-leading sustainable Entrance Matting was required to echo the space’s green ethos.INTRAsystems was the obvious choice thanks to our extensive range of sustainable products that help meet WELL and BREEAM standards.A sustainable successAcross the entire scheme, suppliers were challenged to use the industry’s most innovative, sustainable products, aiming at the highest levels of recycled content and recyclability.INTRAform DM Low Profile was chosen in the unique wood effect finish, which ticks all the boxes including validated data on embodied carbon and packing a double punch of sustainability and performance. Cool black Elite fibre inserts are made from 100% post-consumer waste with extremely low whole-life carbon emissions.Specified in 2020 but delayed through COVID, installation was completed in 2023. INTRA liaised with contractors to reschedule site surveys once pre-works were completed sufficiently for the entrance area to be assessed accurately. This was particularly crucial since the Entrance Mat sits in a lower position surrounded by steps and a raised floor level.Beauty and Brawn - Wood-effect Recycled Aluminium for Sustainable Entrance MattingThis smart wood-effect finish was new to the market back in 2020 but the client was confident it would meet their quality demands based on the many successful projects we’ve collaborated with them on across a variety of settings.Today the faux wood variant is a market-leading product that beats similar looking products made of real bamboo in terms of strength, longevity and good looks. Real wood systems don’t handle excessive moisture well, so the wrapped aluminium is ideal and more sustainable too. Read our bamboo vs aluminium blog to learn why.Fir for purposeNext door to London’s Sloane Square tube station, the 25,000 square feet office building is designed to house 2,500 office workers plus service staff and visitors. The entrance is immediately off the street with a small canopy and no draft lobby, so the matting will be exposed to direct and prevailing rain.Technically, INTRAform DM Low Profile was an ideal choice for a Cat A project like this as it can cope with high footfall and provides more flexibility than other systems. This 12mm profile variant can be surface mounted or shallow recessed for easier integration with whatever finishes the future tenants choose. And the interlocking plank system makes installation and onward retrofitting easy, if required.Entrance Matting Triumphs in Durability and Moisture AbsorptionINTRAform DM, with the Elite inserts will cope with rain with ease thanks to being happy in external (zone 1) and internal (zone 2) locations. Making an ImpactOne Great Cumberland Place is 5,511m2 of high-grade office and retail space, over 8 floors behind an Art Deco façade. Each of the three entrances receives hundreds of pounding feet every day. The design ambitions here were to maintain and enhance the historic elements; the curved draft lobby, original hardwood, brass details, and marble floors.Water and dirt collection was the major challenge for all entrances. Officially opened in 1872, White Hart Lane cemented itself as the home of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. As part of the Northumberland Development Project to redevelop the White Hart Lane Stadium and regenerate the area, the station was also selected to be upgraded. The upgrade consisted of a new ticketing hall, adding two lifts for better access and an additional entrance to ease match day traffic. INTRAsystems worked with the client in supplying the Entrance Matting for White Hart Lane. INTRAform FR was installed as it uses the specialist FR (Fire Resistant) insert which also can withstand multi-directional traffic.

Constructed in the early 80s by Arup Associates, 1 Finsbury Avenue has been carefully redeveloped as part of its evolution from single occupancy into a mixed-use offering. Behind the grade 2 listed bronze façade, work included the re-establishment of pedestrian access through the ground floor to reconnect the building with Finsbury Avenue Square and the wider neighbourhood. The bright, bold work of artist Morag Myerscough featured in this lower atrium echoes the lines of the façade. To match the interior aesthetic, black anodised INTRAflow entrance matting was specified for both East and West entrances.

Gradus supplied stair edgings, barrier matting and carpet to the New Look Support Centre at the Weymouth Gateway development. Committed to retaining its local presence and historic links with Weymouth, fashion retailer New Look underwent regeneration of its Mercery Road site as part of the Weymouth Gateway development. The purpose built New Look Support Centre is a modern three-storey building located at the entrance to the development. The finished look is one of clean modern elevations, substantially glazed to maximise the use of natural light and make the most of the spectacular view from upper levels.

As a part of a wider extension of the Barking Riverside area, the Barking Riverside project has prepared the railway station for huge numbers of new residents. The new London Overground station now connects passengers to central London in just 22 minutes in the first extension of the Overground Line since 2015. High volumes of foot traffic are expected in an area now capable of connecting thousands of new residents to the centre of the capital, so the Entrance Matting had to be extremely heavy duty for such a busy railway station. INTRAflow Plus proved the perfect solution to achieving market-leading functionality in the highest footfall areas.The obvious choiceINTRAflow Plus was chosen to meet the tight deadline for this project. The aluminium planks are 100% recycled, and the fibre inserts are made from ECONYL – 100% recycled nylon made from materials such as discarded fishing nets.With the Entrance Matting now in place, the new Overground Railway Station at Barking Riverside is now well placed to handle the high daily volume of foot traffic.
