Mapei products for the installation of wood flooring were specified to install floor coverings including over 63,000m2 of Domus wood flooring throughout all of the residential and penthouse apartments at Battersea Power Station, London. The construction of over 850 apartments at this iconic site has been completed during the first phase of building. With Mapei’s adhesive Ultrabond Eco S955 1K to furnish every apartment in the prestigious development. Ultrabond S955 can be used with all types and sizes of engineered and solid wood flooring, hence it’s suitability for the installation at Battersea Power Station.

How to Replace Rooflight Dome?

1. Measure your existing kerb; 2. Confirm new dome compatibility with your dome supplier; 3. Choose and purchase your new dome; 4. Remove the existing dome and its frame from the kerb; 5. Secure your new skylight frame to the kerb; 6. Attach the new dome to the frame. For the best result we strongly recommend getting a seasoned roofer, builder or window fitter involved when fitting rooflights. However, if you are to carry out the installation yourself, we are here to guide you along the way.

Surespan supplied a number of circular dome rooflights with triple layers to The Key, situated in the new Science Central development at Newcastle University. These large 1500 (49”) and 2000 (79”) diameter polycarbonate domes feature triple layers providing a U-value of 1.8 W/m²K. The rooflights were supplied with electric opening actuators to allow ventilation to control the temperature of the fabric structure. Surespan Dome skylights were specified due to their high sustainability and small impact on the environment. The triple layers ensure compliance with energy saving requirements and offer excellent air tightness.

Dubai Ski Dome is situated in The Mall of the Emirates in the Al Barsha district of Dubai. It is the second largest Mall in the Middle East being some 2.4 million sq/ft in size. It is the only Ski “resort” in the Middle East. All product endured rigorous testing to ensure that they would be compatible with the extreme low temperatures required to keep the snow good for skiing. FSi Ltd Pyrocoustic Intumescent Sealant was used extensively throughout the Ski Dome.

The Pods Leisure Centre and Central Park

Funded by North Lincolnshire Council, Yorkshire Forward and Sport England, the £21m Pods and Central Park project will become a sporting centre of excellence. The unique five domed design comprises of pods finished in a range of materials, each contributing to the development’s remit to blend into the park landscape. Each dome is waterproofed using the RENOLIT ALKORPLAN system and whilst the complex is thought to be the UK’s largest timber-built geodesic project, it also demonstrates possibly the most innovative use of single ply membrane ever seen in the UK.

A key feature of this renovated castle is its magnificent glazed dome atrium, which lets daylight flow throughout the building. The dome covers a 500m² area and is 15m tall. Guthrie Douglas were approached to solve the problem of integrating shading systems to protect the atrium from heat and glare, to ensure the space could be used year round. More importantly, the solution needed to be sympathetic to the historic building’s elegant restoration. Our TESS 512 was the natural solution since it can cover up to 100m² with a single mechanism, leaving just slim support cables behind when retracted.

The Les Ormes holiday resort in the St Brelade area of Jersey in the Channel Islands has converted its soccer dome into an activity centre called ‘Jump Jersey’. It’s an extremely impressive project which saw international flooring specialist Gerflor supply 1250m2 of their innovative GTI Max interlocking technical tile solution which was used throughout the activity centre as well as the café and reception areas.

Kingspan Light + Air worked on project jewel at Changi International Airport in Singapore. One of the most innovative project features is the distinctive dome-shaped facade, made entirely of glass and steel. Our team worked with the architects and project team to specify and install over 100 Lumera ventilation windows. The Lumera ventilation windows also operate as an integral element of a wider Smoke and Heat Exhaust Vent (SHEV) system.

This project involved the encapsulation of two primary settlement tanks within “bio domes” in order to reduce odours in the surrounding residential area and harvest the methane produced. MasterEmaco N 5200 rapid-setting mortar was used on this project enabling the re-profiled surface to be sufficiently cured within 7 days to receive the coating. Rapid installation and return to service of the applied coating thanks to the combination of MasterTop P660 primer and MasterSeal M 689 coating.

Blackwall Tunnel

BAM Nuttall was awarded the contract by Transport for London to refurbish the northbound carriageway of the Blackwall Tunnel. TFL had a difficult task with the refurbishment as they had to ensure the tunnel remained open to traffic during the day. Faced with the challenges of designing and installing a waterproofing system for a domed roof that features mechanical ‘petals’ that open and close, the architects Acanthus LW worked with specialist contractor Robertson Roofing to develop an innovative solution for the unusual single ply membrane application.

SSE Hydro Arena, Glasgow

Elliptical on plan and angled in profile, The SSE Hydro’s domed roof required over 12,750 sqm of naturally curved tapered Kalzip® sheets in lengths of up to 25 metres installed in six concentric, almost circular bands. The façade of this amphitheatre-inspired building is 15 metres high at the rear rising to 33 metres at the south-facing front elevation with the central apex of the roof being 45 metres above ground level.

Hacel's Lighting Design Consultants were proud to produce the lighting scheme and lighting controls solution for the £22m Monkseaton High School. The awe-inspiring design brings together innovation, sustainability and cost-effectiveness to create an impressive and truly unique learning environment for the school's 900 students. A host of Hacel luminaires featured throughout the project; wall lights were controlled by sensors with presence detection and daylight linking to harvest natural light from filters in the domed roof.

East Preston Infants School

When the existing bitumen roof at East Preston Infant School came to the end of its service life, naturally the decision was made to replace the existing roof and upgrade the rooflights. Kingspan Light + Air introduced 23 Kingspan Classic Skylight Domes into the building enabling the school to embrace natural light, ventilation and smoke management performance benefits.

Mardome rooflights were specified for this very unusual roof layout with its lattice arrangement of rooflights. As only the glazing element of the rooflights needed replacing Mardome Reflex was the perfect solution and technical experts from Brett Martin carried out a site survey and subsequent visit to replace one of the original domes, ensuring a perfect fit before manufacturing 130 Mardome Reflex rooflights for the whole roof. Supplied with clear polycarbonate the rooflights will offer the station co-extruded UV protection which will protect the rooflights for at least 20 years.

In the heart of the building, Populous's architects designed the Blueroom bar and the O2 lounge. A 3D dome was entirely dressed with Barrisol Lumière Color® ceilings. The Barrisol Lumière Color® ceiling offers complete freedom to create unique lighting effects adaptable on all event styles. Lightings are placed above the Barrisol® membrane and create many colored effects. The O2 lounge staff can imagine and create unique luminous atmospheres to surprise its visitors! The Entrance of the Lounge is also made of Barrisol, designing a futuristic tunnel. The O2 complex provides a unique experience to its visitors!

Laubeuf, a leading European constructor of glass roofs and structural glass façades, engaged Guthrie Douglas to design and manufacture a solar shading solution for the roof lanterns, to mitigate heat gain and glare inside the building. The lanterns include curved glass, slimline mullions, and a delicate supporting structure, presenting challenges in creating a shading solution to provide sufficient solar protection and durability without exerting any significant load onto the structure. The bespokely designed systems follow the curve of the historic domes. Half draw from bottom to top, with the blinds closing towards one another when operated.

Kuraray – Trosifol®

This impressive complex has been awarded Project of the Year 2018 in the Building category by Mexican Magazine ‘Obras’ - measures some 180,000m2 (1,900,000ft2). Opened in 2017. Designed by multiple-award-winning architect Teodoro González de León, who sadly died in 2016, the mall makes incredible use of glass to deliver uninterrupted views throughout the complex, thanks to its use of balustrades. But the most striking glazed feature is the egg-shaped skylight in the roof, which is fabricated using multiple shaped panels a slightly domed effect, which lets in as much natural light as possible.

Specialist Acoustic Installation Improves Historic Hannington Hall
